hey this is bill Kelliher from the band Mastodon and you're watching Loudwire hey everyone Graham from Loudwire here it's Wikipedia Factor fiction time with mr. bill Kelliher of Mastodon hello thank you so much thanks for having me always so one through your Wikipedia mastodons Wikipedia hold some stuff that's questionable oh you can confirm or deny and elaborate if you choose mr. William Breen Keller that's true that's true a native of Victor New York how'd you know that I said I'm with the PTO okay and it's correct yeah is that where you were born I was born in Rochester New York okay well I did grow up in Victor New York which is right outside of Rochester what 20 minutes okay cool so they got that right wikipedia says that you're a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland and that your dad moved to the u.s. from killaura Glynn County Kerry Ireland at a 15 or 16 years old that is correct that's correct too awesome would your dad do what did he do well he was a hi-fi enthusiasts real an audiophile Wow so when he moved over here he first worked in like a selling like suits and jackets and stuff like that with a guy and then they decided together to go into a hi-fi business called JB sound on Monroe Monroe Avenue in Rochester New York oh he had that business for about I don't know 30 hit a few stores throughout 30 some odd years cool so that he really kind of in the 70s and 80s yeah he just started with nothing and you know we grew up pretty well you know he's always had food on the table and nice house and clothes to wear I never saw dad though because he was always so busy working oh yeah which I really don't want my kids to say about me you know dad was always on tour well yeah it's a hard life yeah it's gotta be done though so we're gonna do it and we thank you for it lethargy says your last performance was on Christmas night 1999 correct that's correct Wow and you went to Atlanta like right after that I did yeah like the next day the next day and then of course you don't met the rest of the guys at a high on fire show was it that weird to meet your future bandmates literally you just drive down and then you're at a show and then there's Mastodon in January 2000 well was even stranger was I moved to Atlanta in 1997 first okay with my wife and I didn't I couldn't find anyone really to play music with everyone wanted to be a guitar player and my musical style nobody was really into like what they're like what the heck is that was pretty technical death metal little rock and roll and I got my plane ticket back to moved back to Rochester and I went to see today's a day yes the unsane and for our frog Ehrman ha so not a Lonnie little did I know at the times I didn't know any of those guys I knew the band's and I saw or our Father open and I thought where these get where I've never seen his guys before since moving to Atlanta like a guitar player is awesome I could definitely see playing with that dude someday but I didn't know Brent or Troy the time and then after them today is a day one on stage and I had knew nothing about today today except that they're an AMRAP band and I liked Emre label bands so I'd seen Steve and the other two guys and little did I know that later on I'd be playing in rise a day with that guy Steve and then I'd be playing with Brent and Troy from for our fogger and that was the gig where a Steve Austin had borrowed Brent's Flying V silver burst to play Sabbath bloody Sabbath their encore song Wow and I remember he had given the guitar back to Brent and had a huge chunk of wood missing out oh because I've ever seen when I when Brent and I finally uh met and got the band together he pulled the guitar oh my god the guitar and Steve music yeah he broke it look okay Troy I got I got some coffee and beer for you so I thought this one I'm listening over the first for Mastodon records you guys had specific concepts in mind specifically the classical elements of fire water earth and ether but remission does not deal with a particular sim but it is loosely based on the theme of fire instead of fire songs like crusher destroyer where strides the behemoth an old messy deal with a theme of fictional creatures so it's fire not fire time is a loosely based on fire that's only three songs of many with three pieces of a larger puzzle yes remission is loosely based on fire yes we're also fascinated with mythology yes ancient creatures anything of epic proportions there you go so those two things can be combinated unlike coffee and beer okay so now I come here beer all right I'm sorry take a look it says in Wikipedia that Mastodon feel that call of the mastodon is their true third studio album even though technically it's a compilation call of the Mastodon is is a record that relapse decided to put out after remission came out oh really that's third studio album was it after maybe it came out after maybe it came out after well to me that's our first album because okay call of the Mastodon is a bunch of songs that when we first met when bran and I first moved to Atlanta we met Troy and Brent and they had a few songs we had a few songs we put them all together and it was our demo the nine song demo okay we gave that to relapse and they said we're going to test the waters and we're going to put out life's blood with a few of the songs right and then we have these leftover songs so we put those on a picture disk of reptilian records with Chris X out of Baltimore around the same time so we had to we had to look basically what Colin Macedon is is life's blood and the picture disc put together I think doesn't I think may be called an acid on was added okay so to me when I see call to mass and I think that's our first record Blood Mountain several of the lyrics and the wolf is loose refer to chapter titles and themes and Joseph Campbell's the hero with a thousand faces and the main character may be an example of a mono mythical hero that's true ah would you say the character in Blood Mountain is a mono mythical hero mono mythical I think that you'll milk a single mythical way doesn't exist so or no I have no idea that's okay I had to come kind of confused that's the point in it it says on Wikipedia that your only lead vocal credit is for death bound the bonus track from the hunter that was false that's false okay nothing I've ever sang on a record maybe a backup backing I maybe oh well I mean we got three guys that sing and they're all you know really good at it so like : for me it's live I I try to pick up the slack and sing here and there but you know it's for me it's I really want to play you know hold down the riff totally with that you know wait I feel like if I'm singing and playing it I'm not that good at doing both those together I'm just kind of one or the other for me so alright alright so there's some fiction no lead vocal on the death battle I don't know where that came from I don't I read that too it's false alright Mastodon was personally invited to participate in Game of Thrones by executive producer Dan wife who's a fan of the band that is true that's true but the funny thing about the first time we did the Game of Thrones we had just gotten off of an overnight flight from the states to I think we flew into Dublin and then like drove to Belfast and then slept for a couple hours and then we drove from Belfast to where the location is another hour from there outside and there are thousands of us and all of us you know we're wildlings we have the long hair and you know big beards and I'm so tired I kept laying you know they like okay lay down everyone lay down and then when we say three you rise up and that's when you come back to life you know right I don't do any spoilers if you haven't seen it yet but so anyway I'm coming back to life and then okay we're in and there's thousands of us on this beach and okay we're gonna do it all again and we just kept doing that all day but one time I felt like fell asleep my eyes open because there's some deliriously tired and jet-lagged that I was just you know you get tired I was just so comfy because I always yeah stick coats on and stuff and it's kind of laying there and all you have to do is stand up one two at the count of three stand up thousands of dudes standing up and I'm still laying I'm sleep on the beach oh yeah I give enough special treatment cuz we were in the band and any likes us and putting us right in front of the cameras and everything and I hear three and I'm daydreaming laying there I'm like they're standing up and I like get watch they you know who's the idiot in the front row you can't stand up you're out of here who's the vet no get up yeah and if I mean it was all so cool because we were playing in Ireland right around the same time and like I don't know 90% of the Jews over there came to the show I came so they all come one by one of these crazy scary masks I'm like oh babe and really love your band shake your hand and whoa I'm talking to you through is crazy and you're just like oh my gosh hey just go really good thank you so much I appreciate you sitting down with me today
