if you are not utilizing color prompts in your AI artwork you're missing out on a powerful artistic tool colors are an essential component of any visual artwork and key to the mood of your image and you have more control over the colors than you think in this video we'll explore how AI understands color and the best practices for prompting the colors you want you can create vibrant Landscapes or stunning portraits let's explore how you can level up your AI artwork with the right color prompts AI image generators currently don't understand hex or RGB codes graphic designers use these codes to Target exact color Hues number eight zero zero zero eight zero is purple and eight seven c e f a is sky blue but AI image generators are natural language tools we don't go around talking about colors in HEX codes in an AI image generator prompt for the color by name Rainbows are colorful Blues Reds and purples in a satisfying order start with these colors of the rainbow red orange yellow green blue indigo and violet but these basic colors aren't the only colors you have to work with there are hundreds of different colors that the AI image generators recognize believe me I've tested hundreds of color names in mid-journey and Leonardo there's a link to a style reference guide in the description below that lists all the colors I tested believe it or not the list is far from complete and I'm sure I missed a ton of colors and you can get very specific in your prompt by just using the right color label don't just prompt blue prompt royal blue cyan or Cerulean the color created by the AI image generator may or may not equate to an exact hex code but it will be in the right Ballpark and to make the image more interesting the AI often adds other colors or shades of the color I've put a link in the description below to a handy tool that shows you exactly what colors are in your image we tend to name colors after physical characteristics of objects an orange is orange a lavender flower is lavender colored and Amber is the color of amber the AI may give you the thing and the color but if you use the color label in context the AI usually figures it out you can always add a few little words to your prompt to make it clear that you want the color and not the object a lavender colored cat removes the lavender plant from the background and there are no eggplants to be found when prompting for an eggplant Colored Sky you can modify Colors by asking for a lighter or darker shade but there are many many ways to modify colors Beyond just using the terms light and dark you can ask for vivid green deep green neon green saturated muted shiny the modifiers change the Hue and the intensity of the color chances are a paint company has used the name to identify a particular Hue but even if the color doesn't officially exist the AI is able to make it but unlike paint colors using Color modifiers in an AI image generator also affects material lighting and maybe even the mood of your image in AI transparent green isn't just a hue but an effect asking for Ultra green may give you a similar Hue but a different surface effect glossy and opalescent green have very different surfaces and if one color doesn't do it for you you can ask for a mix or a blend or a swirl of colors the possibilities are endless so far we've been talking about basic color labels but we have a lot of different words for color you can prompt for Hue for a tint for a shade or for pigments the AI understands all sorts of natural language references to color a range of color can be a called a spectrum or a palette other ways you can ask for a lot of color is by asking for a colorful image or a multi-colored image a rainbow effect or Prismatic images you can also talk about tone value or color blending or neutral colors or chroma the English language has a lot of words for color you can ask for a single color or ask for color combinations duotone will give you two colors tritone will give you three and quad tone usually gives you four some color words like duotone have a very specific meaning if you know these meanings you can change the whole look of your image in one word monochrome or grayscale will give you colorless black and white images selective color or color pop means something very specific in photography you'll get a black and white image with one highlighted color Ombre or variegated are ways of combining colors variegated is a pattern usually in reference to vegetation an ombre is a gradual color shading effect infrared cameras show light we cannot normally see this results in photographs with unnatural colors skies are dark and trees are maybe pink colored terms like RGB ckmy and Technicolor have specific definitions but the AI seems to interpret these as generally colorful images lots of color can be exciting but it can also be overwhelming sometimes it's best to use just a few colors when artists and graphic designers talk about color combinations they're often referred to as color palettes combining colors is where artists get into color theory and the color wheel we're not going to do a deep dive into color theory but let me give you a brief overview color theory helps designers choose colors that go well together blue and yellow go well together they are opposite each other on the color wheel they are complementary when these colors are placed next to each other they create strong contrast and reinforce each other so they appear brighter and more vibrant complementary colors are often used in graphic design to add depth and interest to an image analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel this is like blue and purple the colors often share common properties graphic designers use analogous colors to create a visually cohesive look but without a pinch of color too many similar colors can look boring so sometimes a contrasting color is added split complementary is a group of three colors two are complementary colors and two are analogous this is a nice balance between a cohesive color scheme and a contrasting pop of color your design is both harmonious and visually interesting if you want to know more about color theory and Define find colors that work well together I put a link to a handy little color calculator in the description below choose a color and you can easily click through which color schemes work well together you can ask an AI image generator for complementary colors analogous colors or split complementary color schemes but the AI result may not be that precise colors go a long way to setting the mood in your images and if you want some color suggestions for a specific mood just ask ask the AI for a happy color palette or a Melancholy color palette the AI will give you some color suggestions and you can go from there where you can go find images with the colors you like you can pop the image into a color ID tool like the color extraction tool I've put in the description below you'll know exactly what colors make up the image and don't forget to use the image as part of your prompt show the AI exactly what you want colors are visually interesting we can't help but look at eye-catching color when creating AI images don't be satisfied with just the colors of the rainbow but you can have so much more share your favorite color prompts
