Mass for the Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time - February 20, 2022

oh lord i trust in your merciful love my heart will rejoice in your salvation i will sing to the lord who has been bountiful with me let us stand together and praise god singing all our welcome found on page 3 in your worship dates [Music] oh [Music] sometimes of grace [Music] this place [Music] you of jesus [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all right as we gather at the lord's table jesus challenges us to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us expecting nothing in return let us enter this celebration of the eucharist with thanksgiving for god's bountiful goodness as we acknowledge our need for forgiveness and healing lord jesus you heal sin and division lord have mercy lord our mercy christ jesus you redeem us and restore us to holiness christ have mercy praise have mercy lord jesus you show compassion to those who place their trust in you lord have mercy on the lord may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us all to life everlasting amen [Music] peace [Music] glory oh [Music] jesus christ [Music] us [Music] oh foreign [Music] christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god [Music] grant we pray almighty god that always pondering spiritual things we may carry on in both word indeed that which is pleasing to you through christ our lord amen so a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abishay went among saul's soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping around him abhishe whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abasha do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord [Music] the lord is [Music] bless the lord and forget not god's benefits the lord is [Music] all your iniquities and comforts your sorrows redeems your life from destruction and crumbs kindness our lord is [Music] [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we also shall bear the image of the heavenly one the word of the lord r [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who bless who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you the gospel of the lord [Music] we love our friends we love our family we love our school we love super bowls we love cell phones and we love our spouse and now today we're given another assignment another kind of love one of a different sort and even more difficult now we love our enemies jesus speaks very directly about this be kind and be generous and be merciful be good to those who hate you love your enemies jesus can speak so directly because he knew about human nature of course david and abishai each represent a different side of ourselves there's abishai ready to slaughter saul as he sleeps and then there's david more willing to walk away and to show mercy paul said roughly the same when he taught that within us there are traces of the earthly one but also the image of the heavenly one there's something good and something bad and the beautiful musical called les mis the main character at one point has been jailed for stealing a loaf of bread that he intended to use to feed his sister's starving children john valjean becomes hardened and bitter he's rejected by everyone because of his criminal past and his time in prison he is a hard and bitter man one night he stumbles upon the house of the local bishop who very kindly takes him in feeds him and gives him a place to sleep for the night valjean tossed and turned he could not sleep and he decided to leave the bishop's house and upon leaving he stole the bishop's collection of silver pieces soldiers came upon john valjean and the silver and they dragged him back to the bishop's house there the bishops to the soldier's surprise told them that valjean was no thief the silver pieces were rather a gift from the bishop to help this man later the bishop tells valjean that he has brought his soul back from the brink and given it to god valjean is changed for the good for the rest of his life he's a demonstration of the image of the heavenly one in each of us overtaking the earthly traces that may still be found it is only accomplished with love and mercy and with compassion with these the healing and the transformation can begin at our baptism we are made members of christ's kingdom our souls are given to god as his adopted children in the church but we know that we are still tempted sometimes the earthly one surfaces and we become short-sighted unforgiving and vengeful only grace can turn us away from the ways of the unthinking abishai within us ready to kill saul on the spot only grace god's gift freely given like the bishop to jean valjean can open our eyes to the abundance of mercy awaiting us in god's arms jesus gave everything for us so in a sense he can ask anything of all of us he asks us to learn along the way of our lives what the meaning of love really is two ways we can practically do this are simple first i think the lord would like us to learn from and emulate the good people who are around us imitating good people helps us implement what jesus asks and secondly keeping our eyes and our souls fixed on the horizon of heaven it is that kingdom which can inspire in us the virtues that lead us there jesus wants us to do the impractical but by being practical every day we may find ourselves closer to him and more able to recognize him when he comes into our daily lives so i believe believe in is jesus foreign he is i believe the lord is kind and merciful and so in confidence we pray for our needs and the needs of god's children throughout the world for the church that we may be instruments of god's mercy and kindness by sharing what we have received with others who are hurting we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for forgiveness and healing in the church that god will heal the wounds that have weakened the body of christ and renew our spirits to further the mission of jesus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who have been our enemies whether politically economically or personally may we let go of hurts and grudges and seek a new understanding of them we pray to the lord right lord hear our prayer for all who struggle to forgive others that god's spirit will touch their hearts and free them to believe in god's love and mercy we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for all that our beloved dead especially our real recently deceased michelle gone pharrell getzeiler elaine wojner carol cavano we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all those we have promised to pray for and for all the intentions we hold in our hearts for peace in the world and for an end to all aggression we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer as our gifts are presented and prepared 10 in the please aids not celebrate your mysteries lord with the observance that is your due we humbly ask you that what we offer to the honor of your majesty may profit us for salvation through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you so loved the world that in your mercy you sent us the redeemer to live like us in all things but sin so that you might love in us what you loved in your son by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that by sinning we had lost in disobedience and so lord with all the angels and saints we give you thanks as an exaltation we acclaim oh [Music] is [Applause] [Music] you are holy indeed o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and the working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that these may become for us the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we gather for the eucharist for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary the mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and martyrs with rose of lima and all the saints on his constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and the salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and joseph our bishop the order of bishops and clergy in the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned here before you in your compassion oh merciful father gather to yourself all of your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from you deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but look upon the faith of your church graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever
