[Applause] ladies and gentlemen please welcome mark wahlberg [Music] [Applause] have you got mark on your chest this week there you go mark's up there beautiful hey mark nice to have you here thank you for joining thank you sir thank you for having me uh what what's happening your hand i didn't want to shake you i didn't see you have a thing on it well i was shooting a movie and i i heard it doing a scene actually the first time i heard it i heard it punching one of my assistants wow but uh yeah we were trying to keep warm we were shooting out in toronto in the middle of the night and it's the only way to keep warm so warming up you're warming up for your action shot of that yeah and i cracked it and then my daughter hit me with the remote control the weed control and that'll do it okay uh where are you based now uh and where are you from originally i live in la now but i was born and raised in boston now boston let's over the east coast yes just up here uh what was it like when you grew up in boston what kind of town was it uh noah is a pretty rough town boston is actually a great school town some of the greatest universities in the country is that where the diesel yes yeah but it's close the closest i got to harvard was trying to you know steal from guys going to school there yeah i um i grew up in a pretty tough neighborhood on the youngest of nine kids nine kids yeah both my parents worked very hard just to put food on the table so so at an early age i i kind of drifted off into a bit of mischief and got into some trouble uh because you're in jail for a little while weren't you i was in jail yeah i was arrested for a violent crime at 16 and i was tried as an adult and went to adult prison at 17. and how long are you in jail for uh all together about three and a half months that it was more than enough to straighten me out yeah i should imagine it was well you know it's interesting we've got this this may be a bit more serious than we normally check on this show but but i remember when i was a kid growing up certainly we used to look at america and we'd see it mainly on tv and movies and it seemed like the roughest place on the planet and i thought well i'm glad i don't live there now i imagine it looks to me like we're rougher here the the streets here seem tougher and and less easier to survive on than america do they have that they understand what's going on this country in the states at the moment do they know yeah well i remember the first time i came in he came here i wish i had brought all my friends because i remember the police didn't even have guns it could have been like a free-for-all you know you start letting americans in here you guys are in big trouble but um i was watching the news lately i've been watching the bbc and cnn and i've been seeing all these stabbings and stuff that that's happening and and god just feel horrible because a lot of these kids they don't understand they don't seem to value life and uh you know the only thing that they're going to end up doing is either being killed or ending up in prison and you know i hate to say it but a lot of movies and a lot of music uh you know can can be bad influences on kids it's really up to the parents and of course the government to really kind of control what kids are able to see but do you consider that now especially with kids yourself when you get a script in are there decisions you make or do you approach the material differently now than when you used to oh god i got so much explaining to do to my kids between stuff that i did like in my music career and early on there was a show on in america about stuff in the 90s and i i was on it and i was thoroughly embarrassed i mean half of the time i had my pants down around my ankles i looked like a stripper instead of a rapper and it was just it was bad i know i have a lot of explaining to do and what what kind of credibility is that there's a picture of you as a yes exactly what kind of credibility am i going to have if you know all of all the dumb things that i did have pretty much been documented i don't have any evidence of my parents doing anything dumb because that's how we first got to hear you and you first uh gained some degree of fame and i'm being well known you were marky mark with the was it the funky bunch the pokemon chess okay now there is marky mark with the funky bunch where are the funky bunch now they're actually uh the funky bunch is making a comeback right now along with the new kids on the block they're all coming back of course your brother was in the new kids wouldn't they yes okay uh but but the the the funky bunch will they be coming back with marky mark or personally marketing mark one more mark is retired unfortunately okay we have a clip of uh mark back when he was marky mark and uh you know he said that he was often yeah well you know we might as well get this out of the way now so your kids are ready for this uh and how are you about nintendo they bring me out a glass of red wine they could bring you out of glass for a drink i didn't think i would need it okay here we go this is marky mark with the funky bunch [Music] that's a good sound that's a good sound you had there wow [Laughter] another now you make the leap in the to movies i guess via your modeling was that correct because you also you it was a hugely famous campaign well here you are there you are with the kate moss way back when in the calvin klein adverts once again with the pants full on display um and and that was uh that caused quite a stir at the time didn't i mean it was a big a big deal um i guess so i try to forget that too whether we have another shot of you from that period as well [Applause] it could happen it's not too late for me to get in shape with it uh but is it true that there was those adverts that led to the movie crew is that why uh yes and i don't well i don't think you know too many serious directors and producers would see that and say well i think that guy could be a serious actor maybe we'll use them to uh you know walk by with his pants down or something but uh was that always a game plan was that something either when you were a kid or when you had turned yourself around and started doing the music did you think okay acting is where i'd want to be no i actually never thought about even though i had a huge love of cinema you know that was a favorite thing to do with my dad we would always watch movies especially older movies like cagney mcqueen those are the guys that really grew up idolizing which of the performances are which are the films that you're proudest of um well i'd have to say uh the departed um that was uh what a magnificent film and a great performance oh thank you a film uh called invincible i don't believe it was released here it's about an american football player as a disney sports movie because that sport isn't a real sport you see that's what i'm talking about you playing the sport just for recreation yourself no i've been training to do this boxing film and i'm a avid golfer so you play you say you're a pretty good golfer i imagine you are i'm okay i'm okay uh and uh the boxing you do you said you just made a boxing movie no i'm training to to play a fighter uh hopefully i'll be shooting the movie in october of this year i've been training almost two years now to do it true story of irish mickey ward okay so you'll be doing do you do an irish accent in this no i don't okay no but i would like to you know how come americans never get to play english oh you got all these english actors and all these australian actors playing american and i never saw like uh sylvester stallone do an english accent right why you know that's probably why in this case although i love stella uh can you do an english accent uh i don't know well then don't sit there saying no well i actually uh no i don't like being put on the spot i'm very shy tough titty my friend told me to say call you a wanker no no no that's pretty good who taught you that oh god i always imitate jason statham when i worked with him and i've worked with many guys but you know my whole thing is i'm always very serious so i would definitely pull it daniel day-lewis and come here and live for a year because i wouldn't want to do it i wouldn't want to do anything and be embarrassed so you've done enough to embarrass myself in the past and the only reason why i've really succeeded at acting is because i've really done the homework and the preparation and and i wouldn't take on a role that i couldn't handle well let's uh let's go back then to the first movie where i think people took you seriously as an actor it really was boogie nights and that was a tremendous movie great piece of work by the young directors paul thomas anderson his first big movie uh great cast with you there we see with john c reilly and of course um philip seymour hoffman yeah uh both of them who've got academy awards uh yeah fabulous piece of work awesome uh what a great subject as well what a strange subject yes the early days of the american porn industry and of course you play you were sort of playing it was uh it was like the john holmes character he was a phenomenally well endowed uh performer in in that particular adult field uh was there any concern about you in that way did you know early on that you because they use a prosthetic did they measure you for that or what are they yeah i had to go to this whole weird thing man there's all these you know people who do this kind of work don't have a lot of time on their hands or they have too much time on their hands i went up and there was like this platform you had to stand there and they kind of kind of mold this thing around you and then when they had to glue it on and then take it off and you could hang something you had to wear it for 12 hours so it was glued on using like uh just uh super glue the thing weighs a good three pounds too i mean and they had it they had to try to get it right a couple times the first one they had the thing was like was basically hard every time i sit down the thing would just go by and if you look at you in the [ __ ] face you have to kind of push it out of the way to talk to somebody when i was uh when i was 14 i had a whole summer just like that it was terrible it was a nightmare i'm telling you um uh but what uh what a great piece of work i mean what a tremendous performance for you and what a what a satisfying movie to watch i mean you must be delighted to have been part of that process yeah it's certainly one of those films that will hold up for quite a while yeah uh let's talk about uh the new movie at the moment the happening is out now what attracted this movie what was about this part what about this film that you wanted to do well i've always been a big fan of m night shyamalan and here's the guy called you who did sixth sense and uh village yes yeah and uh he's just an amazing talent he called me and said i wrote this part for you and uh when i read the script i was just blown away because it is so different from anything i've done especially lately i play a science teacher uh i'm married to a psychiatrist and we're at a a huge crossroad in our relationship in our marriage and it's falling apart and she just doesn't think that i could step up and be a man because i actually appreciate life and i believe in people and i have hope and uh and she's uh she's not too optimistic about the future and about life so and then this this horrible thing happens breaks out in new york people think it's a terrorist attack it's one of those movies it's kind of got a big there's a big concept involved there's a big kind of threat and there's some spooky stuff going on but at the same time really it's about the human beings involved in that and that i guess is one of the things that yeah when he described it to me uh he described it to me as the birds meets kramer versus kramer i was like wow well that's really interesting two completely different movies but two of my favorites so well i can see why they're saying that now but i mean that's a that's a peculiar way of selling you yeah definitely yeah uh it's this is the trail of the movie you're going to see this now it happens on the 13th of june here in the night king this is mark wahlberg in the happening [Applause] one of the stars in june and the guy get the sixth sense that's uh once again great pedagogy to be involved with that when i when i saw the movie for the first time he was outside waiting for me and i choked him because that movie scared the living [ __ ] out of me and i'm in 90 of the movie i mean it's like the the nerve that this guy has to put people through that because and it also it's amazing because it raises real debate because there's evidence pointing towards this kind of thing happening i don't want to give too much away but uh you know you see with with what's going on with our environment and the climate today it's uh it's very scary stuff uh now let me just go back before we say goodbye and i'm very much enjoyed meeting you uh the departed we mentioned briefly uh when you get a call from martin scorsese that's gotta be like every young actor's dream i imagine yeah it was awesome because not only was i working with scorsese but i was also working in my hometown in a in a in my wheelhouse in my backyard and and all that trouble that i got into all that experience with the law i could finally use that and apply that in a positive way and that made my parents well the film has a real feel about it anyway i mean his films tend to definitely authentically what is the boston accent like what is the accent like growing up in boston what sort of street accent do we hear well when i go home the first thing i usually hear from my mother is what the [ __ ] are you think you're a [ __ ] movie star now i don't give a [ __ ] what you do in hollywood okay do you have anybody who's the boss do you have anyone in your life who keeps you grounded though who stops you from getting mad you think no but you know what it's good because uh you know i i do uh you know i'm a very faith-based person and i ask god for the strength to be humble and give him the glory and and to do the right thing and yeah i'm guessing with nine children are your family catholics by any chance yes that would explain that my dad also had five children from another a previous relationship that i just found out about not too long ago quite the busy man that's a surprise isn't it yeah it's always a surprise when you meet some 50 something year old guy he's like hey man i'm your brother he has i'm like i don't i got no more money does he have any more do you think tucked away for special occasions that he hasn't talked about he was in he was in germany and he was in korea so i guarantee you there's a couple floating around this there's a man that's a big collection going on there yeah that's going to be an interesting christmas this year isn't it yeah exactly mark love to have you good luck with the film i appreciate that with all your future films [Applause] [Music] you
