and it looks like we're about ready so I'm gonna throw things on over to Abney best of luck hey everyone gonna be playing some Mario Kart 64 150cc with skips i'm Abney we've got haddock micro and whether 10 on the couch and as an added bonus for this large hipster on Marty has been unlocked the run on commentary yeah so I'm just gonna count this down and we'll get going here so 3 2 1 go [Applause] so right at the beginning of luigi Raceway he's gonna spin around and touch the certain part of a polygon so that when he knocks himself out of bounds he's gonna be placed back where the game thinks he's gonna be and right now he's looking to get triple Reds ideally so he could knock himself up out of bounds take a blue fill there we go oh yeah nice the doves they Becca Abney original discover this shortcut is the Japanese version one only shortcut so we are playing the Japanese version yep Japanese 1.1 nice boy sorry to interrupt but we just met $400,000 nice awesome alright he's getting he's got the blue shell there that Oh always DK always that hot air balloon always gives you a blue shell and the nice thing is the blue shell tracks first place easy hit yourself thanks work I noticed gives time of like 140 would be pretty good there okay absolutely that's still saved a lot of time there so now on moo moo farm there aren't any skips that we've found yet yeah but we're really hoping they're really hope they're coming I'm not so sure they're coming yeah I don't think so either I've searched pretty hard I'm not saying it's not possible but unlikely yeah there's not much we could they're here yeah and a very very tall and then it's all void in the middle so you can't even drives through the middle so in time trials these moles are pretty frustrating because there's a one random element in time trials that you have to deal with they took same thing every every lap and still hit one they talked about that in the mario kart DS run where they're not random in that game oh really yes but in this one they are yeah yeah and other random elements for Rebecca and 150 are all the items so there's an items table that we have that tells you that mushroom in first is a 10% chance there's other items that are lower 5% chance for red shells whose things like that but what you'll notice is Becca's doing a lot of mini turbos and the mini turbo in this game is particularly complicated to pull off although Beck makes that look like it's not because he's getting like hundreds yeah cuz he's a monster but every mini turbo is a seven phase process in Mario Kart 64 it's pretty unreal so now coming up on Koopa Troopa Beach I know no code there's just that one jump into the cave but in this stage we're gonna see him try to utilize an eighth-place item glitch he's gonna grab the last set of items then go to the right of the finish line and what he wants to do is right before he crosses the finish line he's gonna trigger the end of the item roulette and just for a moment the game thinks that you're in eighth place so therefore you could get an eighth place item so if you watch figure he'll go off the ramp go off to the side oh I don't think it even really triggered a little early you can't get a green show an eighth but if you keep an eye on the first place indicator you'll actually see a trip to 8th for just for a moment yeah you can also a little bit easier way to do it is if you get a foo you can go over there even wider and yeah that way you don't have to go around for the items you can just go straight to it - interesting thing about the Lightning is you may see bec get hit by one in this run and although the use cannot use they can pick up shells but they can't use them they can use a lightning there's a 1% chance that the 8th place your item will use the Lightning right it's so rare but at the same time I've seen people get bolted time and time again de-ice work I think I think the worst luck ever saw was this guy that's a little bit new to the community his name is Brian underscore Matthew shoutouts to he got bolted four times in a row in two courses I've never seen look like in this one there's a developer intended strat where if you go backwards through the tunnels that the train goes through with a star the laughs advances but Havanese gonna do it in a little bit of a different way here so we'll see if what he gets hopefully gets a good item we'll go around again you see we get literally the worst night okay yeah anything but that'll work anything right here yeah you basically are stuck waiting for the golden shroom so we could use this one I don't know he's not actually gonna do the fork up we're thinking of here but I might might stand back again actually okay probably safe to do here yeah Dave so wasted lose rooms gonna stand back no we were talking about that item orangey yeah yeah yeah yeah can we get some bless orangey in there and we've got one more chance here oh that's that marathon luck right there all right now we just gotta get in fourth place or higher it's about as it gets yeah yeah that was unfortunate although there's debate of whether coming in lower than fourth place is disqualification on the fourth race to the top yeah because Beck's going to reset right when he crosses the line here a little early but it's funny we actually the tradition essentially for when we reset between between cups is a little bit early you if it was a fresh cartridge where you had an unlocked anything you wouldn't actually get the cup reason at the game but it's tradition let's go for it you know when does it what does it proc it after the score screen goes it's like a certain level it's like what players 3 shows up or something is that there's that like the total point yes that's like the third player shows up yep still Assad mustard cup or Kinoko Cup different language versions a very different company yeah the Chinese version calls but the special cup the IQ Cup of course alright so he's gonna do an interesting shortcut here he's first gonna get stuck in the wall here come back down and then jump through the wall [Applause] now what happened there was when he got stuck in the wall the key to picked him up but look he was still in the screen when he put him back down and when look heaters on still on screen you can't get picked up again so he can't get stuck in the wall so he can go right through it lay down the ground but now because these got stuck in the wall the first time it triggered a glitch that the game thinks you fell off there so now he's not put you right back now when you fall off again it puts you half way through the course so now he's half way down was left too and he's just gonna repeat this again wombo combo and this is why he's using Japanese 1.1 he had at one point oh you actually can't do it at one point out the second skip there was introduced when they patched something else know why yeah they fixed fixed it and broke something miles and broke this it's like programming 101 in a nutshell [Music] [Applause] the cars are on a set schedule so it's it's consistent but still getting run over it Wow don't see it total to floating out there the other computer players actually or they have a tendency to drive off the course and when you see them the physics takes place and we just thought if you get picked up Becca peach queen if you're gonna run this game first of all go to sleep on comm and check out the Mario 64 rankings their facts number one by a minute and a half yeah by a large amount so he's gonna be confusing the checkpoints again he's gonna be going off of the off of the bridge and he goes directly to the side of the road not touching the road itself so that when he crosses over if the the lakitu who's gonna pick him up and put him back where it thinks he should be but it skips the whole lap in the process so rinse and repeat and this one is short work the game has some checks basically if you're far enough beyond the finish line or far enough in front of finish line it lets certain things slide and look he through teleports you back behind the finish line alright now here we're hoping for a mushroom yeah the game the one that Beck is the best in the world at mmm-hmm I made the three out of three you know whether tango is just a portmanteau of Greg in atenco Andrew whether ten to our left here the pioneers of the trick itself but oh I always wait wait whispered lap normally to run you wouldn't know what happened as ever no way you're gonna get to the finish line he's gonna turn turn to the side and boost at the wall at a certain way and if he gets it it's been labs good things happen yeah so did it because you didn't make that vopa there's a there's a backup right here that's pretty pretty good to get into that first one I gotta go actually very challenge Linda there we go come on come on [Music] nice try nice try good attempt alright yeah daddy that is put the lotion what was your percentage like 6% and that's that's in time trials doing it it's way harder in 2050 yeah cuz you're going so much faster time trials 100cc so you're going a little bit slower it's easier just to hone in on that spot he also can repeat this course constantly right every give or take yeah yeah also you also have a specific controller dedicated to that trick that's something I'm doing between the tracks here I'm holding start while I'm mashing a and it makes the point screen go faster for whatever reason they programmed that into the game alright so here at Mario Raceway he's gonna be buffering for some triple Red's again in hopes to not gonna solve over the wall on the other side of the brick wall here so let's see what he gets you made those again all right I'll do it back up here yeah it's a bit slower but [Applause] now I can hope for a single red shell but it's pretty unlikely to get out of first by personal he'll just go around now Yale [Music] you could get a boo and then get a red shell from the boob abuja sax is another item box with a 20% chance of nothing yeah when you're in multiplayer it actually steals an item but in CP it just it's like I did nothing yeah it's the same as what I don't say it's any item right it's based on your place yeah okay it's based on your place okay yeah it's just like an item box yeah okay but it also gives you the chance of getting nothing yeah which is right gracefully yeah you do that's true yeah all those pesky lightnings oh yeah and that's flower Cup all right so onward to start Cup he's gonna be going to Wario stadium for a short time another stroke yeah what's normally like the second longest course becomes one of the shortest just ball on the left looks looks like you could jump it right we had one framed to jump over buddy he pieced it as he always does yeah you gotta jump just the right time maybe one or two frames depending on the angle and sometimes you get 0 framed yeah we're using tumble if the game decides you're in the wall in that frame usually gets stuck in the lucky tool pick you up it happens but I got a big shout outs to everybody playing agdq bingo yeah [Music] now there's a not too many shortcuts here I'll just be playing this one non shortcut I do point out the Penguins are just on cycles too they're really random I know where they're gonna be hopefully and usually yeah there's there's some crazy jumps you can do off of the CPUs that weather Tintin has done in the task run but I won't be gone for any of those so now would be a pretty good time for some donation interesting fact you can drive on the island in the middle and there's just four cut involving that you can't make it out yeah yeah you need a ridiculous cpu time to get out there but it's just strange to me that they write do you think there'd be no collision because it's so far out if you want to see that check out weather didn't pass it's all be useful if you want to see it in 3d with he seriously made a 3d version yeah put your phone on your face and experience so there's a number of shortcuts here but the the two he's gonna be doing first ones up ahead he's just gonna jump off of the water and hit him hit the wall in a certain spot and the game was programmed that if you land if you jump if you fall off the bridge it puts you anywhere near the bridge it puts you back in the bridge by hitting that wall it makes it makes the game think you fell off the bridge so to put you back in the bridge and that's a pretty good skip this one's pretty obvious it thinks you fell off over there so put you back over there you're looking for the word pump believe it or not if you don't see poop it probably didn't work that second one only saves about a quarter of a second but there's another version of that where you can get stuck lakitu can get stuck in the air trying to put you down over water and then the game stalls out and decides they can't put you down so instead of put you at the finish line what like quarter second if you do it on lap three since you get placed on the finish that's what they do in the lap time trials so you can force that glitch on any course and what your what I realize is the game just gives up and puts you on the finish line if it can't put you down yeah it's a backup in the later code but if it can't put you down it's just default through the finish line but it gives you the laughs if you're at least halfway through the lab yep turns out this was at least halfway through and it is not to my knowledge possible to actually make it all the way without falling in the water without you without jumping off a CPU yeah I'll jump you obviously you go quick word wow look at that come on yeah one millisecond alright so coming up is Bowser castle big shout out to Marty you're gonna see Marty you're gonna see me soon check in the back unfortunately he's never been let out of jail felt except for one custom forest where he might if you look closely you might find him Micro Mountain yes the only legit custom mario 64 course by this man here it was amazing it's called micro Mountain but it's a very very big it was cool like for like whenever whenever you released it all the top players just we're banging our rock Upton right and even found a skip on it that's where I bet the designers knew about some of those gifts here and there like yeah especially like the the Royal Raceway skip we just saw off the bridge lay you you don't want to do invisible walls but that's why I almost feel like in Rainbow Road that the jump off was probably intended almost it's like they were giving us the opportunity to skip the course thank you yeah it's a little bit too long of course a little bit yeah a single lap is the length of a all the other rail all of them yeah so these swamps also mostly on a cycle other these people yet yes Abdi knows where to go on which side on those that want the doorway well then I was like it'll be a little long yeah if you fall a little bit behind or go a little bit too fast you just kind of have to compensate and kind of you know wing it sometimes going down the hallways and you saw a bunch of blue thwomps those weren't party if you weren't looking closely enough you missed them it was behind bars used behind bars [Applause] [Music] right here's Donkey Kong's laggy Parkway yeah yeah luckily we're gonna be turning around yeah getting rid of a lot of lag but they decided to put a riverboat in and they really should so he's gonna go through the wall here where they join up but he's gonna stay inside of the cave and it's gonna think that he went the entire lab cuz the finish line if you look it on there's just and it just barely extended out but if you if you go just a little bit too far to the right you'll still hit it but you'll fall into the water that's below instead of staying in the cave and to go a little bit too far you get popped out into the jungle there's no shame in following the water worst is when you go to for a lab that was awesome that was really good [Applause] hold this banana behind me through the points green whatever reason holding a banana behind you reduce black we literally don't understand why zooming out further which would a holding banana does yeah right yeah the game perform better it doesn't make any sense alright so I was starting off here he's gonna try and buffer for triple shrooms we're gonna do the backup okay this is much favor relatively new Beck video found this as well so Luigi Raceway and what he'll do here he's gonna go past this fence turn around the drywall there's Alaska pull have only works if you take the right far right path for some reason yeah I I did track down why but I cannot explain it on screen because it would take about a half an hour Oh check out your it involves that the game is programmed to have four different paths through this pores and you switch paths and it's been saying how complicated that trick is but it looks it's actually really simple to understand so now having got this room he's gonna turn to the side here and he's gonna do the same thing so right off kind of aiming for that big mark and basically you if you bounce to the left you got it and it puts you beyond the finish line but still tells it so I want to know back how did you find that because it requires that you take the slow path and you're a speed runner yeah it was someone was doing a blindfolded run it was the Almo the paper mario yeah he was doing a blindfolded run and I think he went that direction and it accidentally softlock the game and so I did some acceleration if it right path and ended up accidentally kind of finding that you could just trigger the whole lap but jumping across to the finish line right there so Banshee boardwalk there's no of no skips yeah this one although there is the CPU jump yeah different few jumps to do and one of them you jump into that bath house from the finish line area which is kind of cool so might be a good time for donations yep absolutely we have a $10 donation from Aggies big my arms aren't swinging from side to side but I am taking one step to help fight cancer with this donation and I implore everyone else to do the same come on it's time to do it to go through the mario with your heart banana where's pod yeah that was a good reaction at that though the cpu's they do not shoot the shells they pick up but they they certainly drop those banana many bananas bananas can beam death on this course [Music] looks like you got DK in second place - true yeah are you going for yeah the game the game actually decides during the characters to like screen what two characters are gonna rubberband the most yeah they're your rivals yeah we call the rolls and in this case the SDKs remain rival most likely it does seem that the main rival does do even better than that yeah he's quite a bit had that the other CPUs yeah yeah so better you to go for the I don't think there's a shortcut on Rainbow Road that's coming up next where he can turn around in place with the start boost and jump off second player but and it get from the pretty far ahead but it's not the easiest thing to do it's not they receive the quick spiral do it yeah do the jump well the one that everybody thought to do right when you start playing this game and now that he's ahead he's gonna try and get a green shell because he's gonna knock himself over the over the wall at the end of the stage and what it's what's gonna happen is he's gonna actually travel past the finish line and then the lakitu is gonna pick them up and put them back behind again a lot okay supposed to give you good yeah good generally but yeah still no agreeance to be seen marathon right now but we need a green pretty quickly yeah you really only get like two tries before they before they catch back up right yes you can only get go who red you can't do it with a red for a couple reasons one is it's hard to hit yourself with the red because it seeks to the middle of the course and then goes to the next character so you over here differently okay yes here we go you'll need another can try for another awesome so now that he got that one now he's gonna be at a whole extra lap at half now yeah now he has a lot of time so it could be farming for a while depending on the orangey we've seen this run it a dubious so just the green any green would work come on come on green and a blue wouldn't work either even though it's easy to hit yourself with the blue you tumble really strangely from blues and reds and it doesn't give you the distance banana Wow yeah okay do we need to go feet deke a little more oh my man no way Wow okay oh lost one like we got some backups yeah that was just white the bleki here what's Abney who just got done with an awesome mk64 run how'd you how'd you like the run it was pretty good it didn't have the best luck yeah that's how it goes yeah I kind of expect that and GDQ likes it right we're pretty well nice I mean my big question is just kind of how do you find these skips because if we we have this clip come ready for from the DK level yeah and that's kind of one of the big stages where I see just like this this huge skip where I have no idea what's going on let's go ahead and pull that up can you just kind of walk us through kind of what is going once more what's going on in this particular clip yes so you kind of line up with the corner you can clip through the wall and you're actually crossing the finish line there it sort of extends out to the edge and you just land in back in the cave so it thinks you drove around the entire lap and these things they're just found a lot of these shortcuts were found like back right after the game came out and most credit goes to a guy named David Wong who just destroyed the game found tons of shortcuts and I mean like this might be a question for him but it applies to kind of any skips you maybe might still be finding but how do you find this stuff is it like somebody was just racing normally and just took an angle weirdly very likely of course you know you find one thing and you're like oh maybe I could try this tomorrow so you know you try something like fraps Knoll and you do sort of a lap skip where the track is 30 seconds long so you kind of try that there's a similar one on Rainbow Road so a lot of things apply to other tracks so yeah you accidentally find one and it turns into you finding some others on purpose got it so unfortunate there is a lot of luck and manipulate and the kind of manipulation I guess of items in this run you were saying you felt that this one didn't go so well yeah is there anything you can do to like how exactly do you control kind of what items yet make it more like well you know the randomness of the items is just based on what place you're in though if you're an age there's a certain set of items you can get and you have a certain percentage of getting each item so I can kind of up my chances by you know if I want triple shrooms I might go into fifth or sixth place because I know I've got the best chance of getting that item in those places yeah but a lot of the time it's just I go into eighth place because all the good items are when you're in the back so so I mean when you're just drilling these runs in doing luigi's circuit yeah are you finding yourself resetting on the very first level yes I do want triple red shells on on the first track and those are actually 20% in every single place that first you can't go first so I it's like I pick up I usually just grab two items and go so it's like ends up being around a 30% chance maybe I can get some other items maybe two blue shells instead yeah so it ends up being kind of one third of the runs I can continue uh-huh and yeah I definitely research tracked quite a bit speaking of luck there was one particular moment in this run which kind of had me laughing out loud you you probably were not laughing you know but I want to bring up this clip because it was just too funny seeing this it was from a toads Turnpike I don't mean to give you like post-traumatic stress or anything from this but it was from toads Turnpike and I see you just kind of like hitting a banana accidentally you not only hit that school bus but then there's other rock yeah it's you as well it's about that once more I mean is there I guess you guys were saying kind of that these the pathing is deterministic but yeah yeah I know where the cars are the items for a some part the CPUs gin generally will drop their items mostly in the same place if but it's kind of one of those things where if I messed up on the track it kind of manipulates the rest of the randomness so CPUs will start dropping items in places where I'm not used to it on a perfect run yeah and then you know I end up hitting a banana and now all sudden I'm a few more seconds behind and then I usually might if I'm going for world record attempts or something I might have just reset at that point so it might not be as used to the traffic patterns at at that type of pace gotcha let's go ahead and load up a few Twitter question we have here what so from West Point Steve which skip that we saw today was the hardest one for you to learn oh man you know a lot of these I definitely learned from time trials and just they carried over I know I attempted the weather tank Oh on choco mountain I didn't hit it because it's nearly impossible yeah that one probably I'd played that one for probably six months before I even hit it a single time so that one we had the longest of time but yeah a lot of them it's very similar like the choco mountain wall jumps are very similar to the warrior Stadium Waldron so I learned one and I'm kind of a dog on the other ones usually when a new skip comes around if it's shale dreams jumping off a player's or something it's it's not more than maybe a day of practice to try to implement it in a run but depending on the difficulty I might not go for the craziest stuff at a marathon run that might have taken a lot more practice but it's you know you can learn them quick but it definitely takes a long time to really master right all those another question we have here is from entry level fox which is your favorite Mario Kart game if not 64 yeah I get this one quite a bit I I really haven't played a lot of the other Mario karts I mean I actually have played them all except Mario Kart 7 I think some of them not even for morning I've heard but I definitely like Mario Kart 8 it's it's cool cuz has nice graphics and obviously I would just be playing it casually I'm not really speedrunning any of the other area karts though I I mean I enjoy the new one just because it looks nice right I don't know about you know the technical mechanics of the games ones are more better to drive on I definitely have played a good amount of double - Mario Kart Wiis Super Mario Kart but I played six before a hole and the other ones think it's hard to say yeah and this is actually a question I had um so we obviously just saw the skips run there's also one no skips run yeah correct yeah um so how exactly do you find do you define kind of what a skip is yeah it's all based on the the time trial community rules that were set you know 20 years ago so someone just sort of decided hey these one's kind of seemed and intended these ones don't seem intended there's some kind of people argue over a few of them yeah and there may be jumping the hairpin on you if you value kind of a common one gotcha but yeah we just based it off of the time trial rule set and of what's allowed so like the Koopa Troopa Beach Tunnel was allowed and you know non shortcut no skips runs because it's like relatively clear that it's intended yeah um is the community still finding new skips even that now or is it kind of cemented at this very rarely especially I mean time trials is really the the big thing so a lot of the focus to finding new things would be for time trials the weather tank Oh laps Kevon choco mountain is really the most recent thing it was discovered in early 2014 and that was the first time trial shortcut that was found in ten plus years so that's really the newest one we found a couple things in 150cc here and there there's a little more room to find some weird things because you've got items and you can launch yourself off of other players and crazier stuff but it's really not common at this point yeah gotta find much right do you follow the other game game speedrunning communities at all I do a little bit but not not too much yeah these days I you know I'll keep up with some of the Mario Kart records if I see something big nam tutela actually did you grow up with this game yeah well I had the game when I was younger I've got older siblings so this game came out I was probably like 5 so it's uh I had the game probably around when it came I remember playing it with my with my brother and I probably put it away after the Gamecube came out and randomly decided to pick it up again one day who was your character choice as a youngster Yoshi actually I was even in bed as well probably usually I'm sure I think yeah I think my brother usually played toad and my my sister would use pee uh-huh so we were somehow using the best three characters in the game I didn't even know it I don't think could you play much battle game I imagine we did I barely even remember I definitely remember playing a lot to play Grand Prix not even really against my brother just trying to get top two yeah but yeah and we definitely played well thank you so much for the interview that was an awesome run yeah before we move on to Super Mario Bros
