oh hey angus hey what are we doing today uh picking up this piece of junk yeah we're in an impound lot here in ames and i bought this car which has been an impound for i don't know how long maybe a weekend maybe more who knows it's me i don't live here this is a 65 amc rambler 77d classic and i believe if i can pop this open with one hand i might need your help actually by the way ladies and gentlemen whack it garage go check him out he made some good stuff yeah just pull oh okay he's waiting on me yeah we have a 327 amc one thing i never checked is if it needs leaded fuel i have no idea where is it again 65. i don't know i actually do have some history on this car it came from the south it sat in an old guy's collection of cars for the longest time and he passed away and the collection was bought out and this wound up in davenport and then it wound up here so now it's in my hands and we need a car for power tour and as you can tell this is a four door with air conditioning i'm taking three people on power tour and the bench seat in the f-100 does not accommodate three people very well that's the cruise control cruise control has a lamp chain yeah why that's a thing no wonder amc went under no that that was an aftermarket cruise control that's like luke had a van that had the same one yeah science and so this car actually does run it does drive it's got all new brakes in it uh the interiors i got locked um all new brakes all the way throughout it's got a brand new gas tank the interior is pretty dang minty uh the seats aren't bolted in as you can tell from the rider we have a few things to do to it uh but we're gonna try to drive it across ames about three miles to where i live for college and we're going to work on it while i'm still in school for the next three weeks and just try to get this sucker done drive this yeah i'm going to drive that never survive with this oh it's fine hey that's a good host clamp hang on you keep the hose clamp okay now we can throw it weight reduction you can see that there's been some work done to this car there's rtv on the water pump not the happiest about that i believe there's rtv on the fuel pump as you can see down there if my camera would focus that's been replaced um someone went through the transmission lines there yeah they're half hard line half soft line and full leaky there's this going on so i've already looked this car over a bit um i know i've got some parts ordered they're here we're going to throw them on today and we might go over to my buddy zach's shop which just happens to be right there next to the lot this got impounded at and work on it there so we're going to get this thing back out of the in pond lot and where it belongs and ready for power tour we brought the van angus brought his k10 and we got some tools so i thought we were the tools okay so to start things off we're gonna see if this car runs and if it'll move under its own power which of course means we have to check for fluids let's check for fluids i was told this thing runs and drives we have oil we have power steering fluid oh we're gonna have trains interestingly enough this that's the same train you hear in thunderhead 289's videos in this garage so yes set up across town so apologies in advance not sponsored by union pacific nope we have a little low on transmission fluid that could use topped off and we have fuel we have a battery so our vitals are good it's not going to die on hopefully let's see what happens try it again it's not brand new foreign so that's good the brakes are god awful but i think i know why i'll bring in here uh someone redid this this originally comes with a single reservoir uh main cylinder but they have a dual reservoir retrofitted in here but there's no uh residual valves so if you put 10 pound residual valves in here since this is drums at all for a corner it will hold 10 pounds of psi in the line and you don't have to use as much of your play in the pedal to make pressure because there's already some there so we're going to go ahead and do that that should help with our brakes uh we'll go over to zach's eventually do some work over there see what we can get done and then drive the sucker across names so let's begin i guess priorities just get it out of this a lot as soon as we can you know so obviously the first thing we need to do is test if the slotted mags i bought fit and then brakes essentials only and then like plates and whatever else we have to do so let's go grab some rims and see if we can make this thing instantly cooler all right by which i mean see if they fit and then go buy tires and a week later make it cooler yeah yeah yeah okay go okay old tires off weird suspensions exposed 50 facebook marketplace mags go on and they are the wrong spacing i wondered about that but they were 50 bucks so i grabbed them uh i guess we keep the original tires for now okay so we decided the next planet action would be to see how the interior is slash if we get some seats to fit into this thing what is that so we're working on getting these seats bolted in and we need some hardware we scavenged around until i found two nuts and bolts and a car and we're gonna try to at least bolt the driver's seat in with that so that we get the sucker home so that's what we're up to now we'll be back when the seats are in alrighty so with the two bolts we had we installed both front seats each which require four bolts i know this works now cupholders hey the cover box is even still in there that's annoying it's a solid car man hey the light still works what yeah that's stupid this feels like a much better car already just because we have seats i can sit in it now without falling around pretty sure the speedometer works it's got 53 100 miles on it how about that i guess that's gonna do it for today we got some time constraints coming up uh this thing is road legal oh we're going to put the plates on that's the last thing we got to do uh we looked into the brakes we decided they worked for now they're going to get us across to ames to home and then i got insurance on it now yep so we're road legal the seats are bolted in we dug around in the car decided hey this is safe to drive that far but no farther yeah specifically as far as we need to go but not even like an inch more like just a to b maybe let's drive that far it's going to be thrilling i'm scared 300 feet i think we can do it i'm scared for you like i'm not even going to be in the car tell my story i will [Music] there we go oh we got better brakes than i thought so that doesn't take us hello three from the impound lot the ramp off big ol hole the rambler will live again [Music] oh there's a there's a sway bar dragon it do be that way sometimes pull in over here and go talk to zach [Music] yep fell in reverse okay so there we drove 300 feet we did it yeah all right today's goal is accomplished we got the rambler out of the impound lot we know it runs and drives a little bit it actually pulled pretty good i got onto a tiny touch so we're gonna leave it here at right out of glass where they make these out of composite we'll show you all that tomorrow uh and we'll be back to redo the brakes and maybe bolt the seats in properly or it's the main things just the brakes yeah then we can get it across oh and the sway bar brakes and sway bar then we get it back to my place yeah we better cut this out because otherwise this list is just going to get too big yeah all right so a little bit of time has passed we're back here with the rambler it's really hot today definitely not the rainy cold day we had when we pulled this thing over here uh but we were at zac's shop and he just happens to be here to meet you guys what's up gavin how's it going zach good how are you man so you're going to show us around the inside here yeah you want a buddy on this right you kind of split company in one location yep so being a friend of mine uh basically started this company a couple years ago and it's kind of grown so we'll show you what we do inside all right let's head in there oh this is new yeah we've been busy since you're here last man we started uh construction on a new office so that should be ready hopefully here in a couple of weeks and we can get out of all the dust uh with the desks and everything so that'll be good you guys are picking up speed quick here yeah we've run a lot in the last few months so let's make some good stuff very fun yeah we'll check it out yeah let's go check that out all right zach so i've been here a couple of times and the car is what initially brought me here but what's under the cover oh buddy you're in for a treat oh boy maybe a little pete oh that's a t-bird holy cow how's it clean is this still running the original driveline or has it been i think so i think it's been refurbished but it's all original as far as i know that's crazy yeah it's pretty good awesome freaking chevy behind this thing is tall so this is a original four wheel drive been in the same family since it was new so luke will meet him in a little bit his grandpa bought this in 64. i think it was a holdover used it for his masonry business for a bunch of years and then actually his son sam who owns shaffer's auto body used it for 20 some years then it sat in a junkyard rusted apart like 10 years ago they pulled it back out and revived it so they actually did they find it from like a public junkyard or they have they they had it in their own like junk yard oh yeah and then they just totally auto body shop of course yeah yep so wow yeah they did they did good three three generations uh have driven in now so that's pretty good that was awesome yeah this thing is sweet all right yeah let's go check out what you do this is luke my business partner he also runs another company out of this same building right auto glass so yeah i'll explain all the windows behind me over there yeah exactly so we uh we made quick covers uh basically they're a molded one-piece rocker and cab corner for all these trucks in iowa that love to rust out so kind of an easy solution for diy guys that want to make their truck look new again not a whole lot of labor and something that is a lot more cost effective than doing the whole welding option so it's gonna never rust because it's right what material do you use here this is uh abs plastic so it's a high impact uh plastic you paint this to match of course you wanna cut out the rust and kind of treat it before so the rust doesn't spread and then paint the covers put them right over the top and looks good as new so that's awesome yeah pretty simple we kind of just start with a flat sheet of plastic on the machine here we build our own molds uh and it just heats it up and it kind of presses the mold into the plastic and we suck out all the extra air so it kind of freezes it into that shape and then we cut everything out and finish sand it which is what luke's doing right now just kind of uh making sure all those edges are smooth everything's up to spec as far as hitting on the truck and uh then we box them up and shoot them out that's awesome so what trucks do you make these for perchance the f-150s from like all the ones that have the wrong corners yeah yeah so that's actually for an 09 to 14 f-150 yeah yeah so everyone that you see driving around with the cab corner there's a big hole in it that's that's it right there um the 99 to 06 chevys all the body styles as far as the single cab extended cab crew cab some dodge trucks will have more of those coming soon and uh a lot more planned for the future so this is kind of your r d shop right you're looking to yeah kind of move all your your molding out somewhere else so you guys just design new yeah and low low production numbers exactly exactly we've kind of outgrown this manufacturing facility so we're gonna take our more popular products have another manufacturer make those and this will just be kind of where we develop new products maybe do low volume production run and just kind of stuff that can handle this capacity here awesome so we should probably ask for anyone that's curious how do they get a hold of you guys get one of these and what does a rocker for say an f-150 or chevy cost yeah yeah for sure so our website is quickcovers.co uh you can order right online or you can call us uh all of our information is on social media you can just look up like easy rust fix on facebook instagram all that good stuff um and like for a set this is like a chevy crew cab for a complete kit with both sides plus the attachment tape and rivets and everything is 3.99 plus shipping oh that's not bad at all so you guys literally install their include everything they need everything that you need the only additional kit would be like our bracket kits on some of those chevy trucks that are really rusty that need some additional support and those are just an extra 60 bucks so if you need them it's extra that's just a stamped piece of stainless steel yeah galvanized yep so and that just kind of replaces your inner rocker all right well hey what do you say we pull a rambler in here let's do it work on it sounds good get this turd back on the road there it is what do you guys think looks like you got a couple new parts in there new alternator master cylinder a little grungy yeah she's dirty she needs some work for sure what's a glass man thing i don't know a lot of old stuff in this thing yeah i mean a lot of glass in here all these companies don't even exist anymore like guardian windshield they've been bought out by carlax and really everything else people i would have never known that you know that yeah i like the sears tire that's the nice touch see there's this iron is smooth oh my gosh that's fantastic it's like a bias ply sears tire that's how you know it's old what is all this stuff does this go to this car i i don't i don't know it's it's a 65 classic right hand oh that's the the broken this guy's popped up yeah so i guess i do have a bunch of extra parts that a replacement right there dude we can vacuum form some of this stuff what yeah yeah let's try it we just need something flat and kind of sturdy yeah that'd probably probably like crush this your strongest flat piece of metal in there are you okay if we maybe destroy this yeah let's go for it this is for science is this right let's make it out of plastic let's see if it'll form yeah let's see if we can this is like you guys can have your own youtube channel will it form will it form we'll just pull that out see what things you can can you vacuum steal a watermelon that'd be amazing so i think if we this is one of the vacuum holes that we have taped up because we had another mold on here we could cut this open set this on here and then it would have some airflow and give us enough draw i think and then hopefully we get a good part out of the deal at the same time so we're not having any plastic that's awesome i don't know you can also make a loan yeah this is gonna be sweet you're like doubling our production we're making hubcaps and rockers in so what do you think when you drill a hole in there first yeah let's knock a little hole in there and then we'll just dry it there's some serious science going on here okay so you said there's potential for this thing to be crushed though oblivion for sure how much force do you pull through plastic onto these um so we usually pull about 30 what is that 30 pounds psi of vacuum so pounds per square inch yeah so i'm not a scientist or engineer but i'm guessing that's the equivalent of 30 pounds per square inch on there so that's you know 14 times some circles and math and stuff yeah that's many pounds of your theoretical weight being applied on it i think it'll live guesses i think it's going to bend yeah i'm going to say it's going to bend but it's not going to crush so the only guy that's never seen a vacuum for him is the one that's optimistic i mean if we lay it flat would it have a better chance of surviving i think it would i think we're going to try to do that okay let's let's do that because i mean that is i guess there's one of the ramblers hubcaps not that i think they're regular but what's your place there's some purists out there that might hate us so we destroy this though so we should probably take all precautions to preserve it although it is a little bit damaged already oh okay then throw it in there yeah so if this was an actual mold we'd probably want air holes inside this cavity here because once the plastic comes down and seals on this surface there's not gonna be anywhere for the air to escape in here okay so it'll actually make a pocket through here yeah so it might collapse my guess is it probably won't pull down through there all the way maybe just like halfway down this dome yeah yeah if it pulls down more than that then i don't know that's just magic sure i'm really excited to see what happens it's gonna be awesome thank you sir yeah easy bake oven three minutes so it just warms up the plastic to be malleable for three minutes and then away we go yep well we've got a temp done so we'll measure the temperature and once it's at the right temperature then we'll let it go the timer is just so we don't forget about it and burn the place down so right now i hear a pump wearing over there i'm assuming that's a vacuum pump yep there's vacuum pumps running over there that are sucking down negative in these tanks and then that's what's going to suck all the air out to pull the plastic to the form this is gonna be way more exciting than the rest of the video there we go that would be like a cool clock yeah yeah it honestly works cool yeah yeah it really did seal between this point might have deformed it a little bit but i think it'll be okay oh yeah it'll it'll spring back it's fine it's got this negative angle we might have to cut this thing off that's going to be hard to get out yeah it's going to be hard to get out of the box maybe just put it on the car like that and then bama i have black rooms yeah for real instant better than plasti dip that was way more violent than i was anticipating the switch that would that would definitely crush some things let's definitely get some power look at that yeah it's even got the clip so you can put it right on that is so cool that was really violent i wasn't expecting it to be that fast i thought i'd be like nah yeah but no that was well we kind of beefed up the vacuum on these things we got three pumps over there so it is faster than most man you could throw a watermelon in there but that'd be a mess but you could vacuum form sweet stuff oh yeah you know maybe these aren't even the hubcaps for this car oh wait no these aren't the rims these are ford rims oh i just remembered that's cool though that's what it would look like it's actually pretty sweet yeah it's actually yeah that's pretty cool pulls a higher gloss than any like paint or anything you put on there that quickly yeah yeah and you could paint it yeah you could even sand that down if you wanted do all kinds of colors so what do you guys say do you guys want to see these guys vacuum some more stuff did they start up a channel i think so you should do it thumbs up so that's our channel all right we'll put a link down in the description when it gets going make sure you guys go check that out will it form will it form i thought that was really cool when you flipped it i did not see that going it came out pretty decent not bad we at least make wheel covers yeah or like every city dweller in the world wouldn't have to worry about curb rash that's true right that's plastic wheel cover i'm just gonna leave that on there for now sell it with them people be like wait what the hell is this no idea that'd be really funny just don't even say anything yeah so it was the fourth one looks like we went from the 60s to an 80s sci-fi yeah yeah this thing could be in a terminator movie yeah yeah so go check these guys out here on youtube now uh will it form awesome channel yep anytime buddy all right so we've done work on this we've vacuum sealed that let's get this thing the heck home and i'm gonna finish up what needs to be done like throw some gauges in it why not there thank you guys very much for your help yeah definitely thanks buddy thanks luke well yeah i'll definitely have to come vacuum form some more things with you for sure that's fun all right let's get this turret out of here all right here we are at home right where we parked it um definitely needs some work done still in fact we've been working on this all day it's kind of important stuff but we thought you'd give me a quick update angus is here again blackhead garage hello hello uh he is working on the shift issue where it doesn't stay in park and you start it and likes to jump in reverse and away you go and that is no good well he's working on that i've got these trim panels in these aren't the right seats but here they are uh that one's bolted in and the seat belts are bolted in i don't think these are the right seat belts but they are tracking seat belts and i like that so they're going in you'll notice the gas tank is out if you're really keen you'll notice there's a mustang gas tank with exhaust tubing welded to it that's the biggest issue we have right now this thing was not vented at all if it was a mustang it would have been a vented tap with the cap being the highest point so it would have been just fine but someone sealed this welded this to the side and did all this debauchery with no vent so you put fuel in you can only get to here but it pressurized all the air in here and every morning when the sun came up this thing started barfing i mean lots of fuel would come out the hole regardless of any vents that it had in the tube it would just start spewing fuel out and then i also noticed that while i was down in there i realized there's a crack right there so we got a one inch crack going around the top of this because this was not the correct hose or anything someone built these brackets like they put a lot of work into this tank and didn't put a vent on it they it it's kind of the whole thing with the whole car they did a lot of work to get something right but they just didn't know how to do it correctly hopefully get this thing staying in park and then we'll do residual valves while we're up here and while i have these seats out in the front i'm going to work on anything under the dash try to get these lights working and try to get some gauges in here so we know what's going on so that's where we're at uh we'll be back when we get a little farther just small stuff here which we don't want to fill a video up with us tightening bolts left and right because no one really wants to watch that we'll bring it along for the exciting stuff all right so here's the first good look at what i thought was our 327 amc but sad face it is in fact a 287 amc so rest in peace those 40 cubic inches and what was actually like a difference of like 60 no 80 foot pounds of torque that's a lot of torque yeah just for 40 cubes but um as you'll see with everything else they had it running they did not have it running right so right away i see this which is not plugging that massive vacuum leak at all and speaking of vacuum leaks we have a vacuum port here that runs to nothing i'll just plug that off there's one that is the uh vacuum advance for the distributor so not only will that fix the vacuum leak it'll also give us advance of the timing so that's gonna run a lot better once we get that snipped and hooked up hopefully there's our look at that giant diaphragm picture that holds all the pressure or none of it yeah one of the two so let's plug all these vacuum leaks and see if this thing runs better maybe we should just drop a small block chevy and call it a day i wished i was hoping it was a 327 chevy when i heard it had a 327. which doesn't even have as a 287 so one point off for the rambler all right so here we are another day working on the repo rambler revival uh today we actually have thunderhead289 here helping me it is in this homeless coat he was very local to me so he's decided to come over tonight give me a hand um luke what are you doing well we're trying to just use up some old brake line and you know i'm not sure it has a dual master cylinder on it for drum brakes i'm not sure the master cylinder has residual valves built into it so we're going to go ahead and just put those on and see the brakes were pretty spongy which i'm sure you've mentioned before oh yeah so hopefully this holds some some pressure on those and then you know when you actually push the pedal it takes up your pedal to actually stop the brakes instead of just trying to get the fluid to the wheel cylinders so we'll see kind of a fun little side project yep meanwhile i don't remember if i mentioned this last time but i went through and i worked on the mess of these belts aligning because i found those to be way out of line uh we have a coolant temp sensor uh i've got the cap off the distributor took a look inside everything's new in there so moving inside we now have a tachometer um we fixed the park lever we think we'll find out we have gauges including oil fuel and water but yeah that's where we're at now we'll be back when there's any more significant occurrences all right another day here working on the rambler down at ames looks like we got a got a uh 50 flying by go on and get ch47 is only around here get out of here so um you'll notice that this is going one day at a time that's because it's actually finals week here at iowa state moocs here okay so this goofball hi everything is plumbed up uh where it's supposed to be minus this right now it's all where it's supposed to be uh kind of where it's supposed to be i still have a lot of cable and hose management to do under here and make sure everything's not cracked and broken but there's no fuel tank in the car right now so there's a bit of fuel in the line and a bit in the bowl i just need it to fire long enough to see if i have an oil pressure reading if i have oil pressure and if the tack works and then we can move on oh and if it stays in park because that's a big one [Music] uh [Music] i have good news that was cold with thick oil still but i saw idle of 50 psi revved up to 60. so we've we have now granted with cold oil but when that thins out that should still give us the idle 20 25 so we have a healthy engine and attack work ladies and gentlemen here it is the finished product we got our gauges in the fuel reads backwards but we're holding oil pressure we're holding temp fine we got our attack we got no exhaust the rear seat's done everything is good to go this car is officially back on the road which means i will not be taking this on power tour actually [Music] there's just so many weird things in this car for it to be a car to try to drive 5000 miles that power tour is demanding from us this year so i actually bought a different car which you may see at some point it's a 7d ultimate cutlass about this solid uh way more parts for that that's a pretty good little car so that being said this is the story of the 1965 rambler 770 classic with a 287 and a transmission and stuff like i said um and this is going to end here so i will see you guys next time on junkyard digs make sure you check out uh will it form the new channel that i'm looking forward to a lot which we discussed earlier make sure you check those guys out there's links in the description for everybody i will see you next time on junkyard digs peace you
