Making a Safe Haven - Dwarf Fortress - Burrow Guide

foreign [Applause] welcome back this is Costa games today we're going to be talking about Burrows and Dwarf Fortress and I have a reason for creating this I had just started the campaign uh and I have a necromancer that just popped up um I don't know which one is exactly the Necromancer because these guys are Corpses orbs corpse there's a grim stalker I don't know if that's the Necromancer I don't feel like it is but there's also a uh dingo man corpse or a grim stalker I don't know but anyways this is um eight Undead people basically and uh it doesn't look like they sent the Necromancer but we are under siege um so this is why we are about to create a burrow so I am building a drawbridge and a lever that way I can yank that up and keep my people safe and I'm just going to wait out the siege because yeah I do not have a military setup I am still working on that so it is a about to get tough so to create a burrow and the reason you'd create a barrel is to keep everybody inside at least as much as you can so uh it is this little blue and purple icon here you're going to click add new Barrel and go ahead and select every area that you are okay with your people being in [Music] um so this is all your like safe areas so I'm gonna go ahead and click my metal working area I'm going to drop down a level I'm also going to select my main hub and drop down a level and I'm going to select my minds too or where I'm planning on mining that way they are just cool with it they will go straight there and kind of just work now this is let's explain all of this stuff real quick so there's a couple options here you can repaint the barrel which you will need to do once you grow or expand or do anything like that you can delete the burrow you can re-center on the burrow you can rename it right here you need to assign people to the borough now there's ways of doing this where like if you don't want your soldiers assigned to it and they can do whatever they want you can just do all civilians so as you can see my population of 15. I do not have a military setup I was not ready for this um I don't have any weapons or anything so all my people are civilians no 15 people are going to be assigned I also want all soldiers signed as you get more people you're gonna have to come in and reassign or else these 15 are going to be the only people resigned or these 15 will be the only people assigned to this Borough even if your population is 200 so make sure you do that so now uh this icon toggle whether or not Workshops can Source materials from outside the borough um so if I had this or if I had like this that means that if I have a block of chalk out here my people are not going to come get it to craft with it um having it like this means yeah they'll come out and try to grab that chalk so I want to know um I do not care I do not want them coming outside and then this button this pause button is how you are going to activate and reactivate your burrow so when it's just like this as you can see the difference in that when it's unhighlighted and there's no white ring around the pause button that means your burrow is active that's telling everybody hey get inside the burrow stay in here and we're gonna figure this out and that's what I want but I do need them to build this drawbridge so I'm going to have it pause real quick and I'm going to keep an eye on these guys making their way over here they are walking kind of slow just due to them being Undead looks like they are working on my drawbridge or they were okay somebody's working on my lever my lever has been crafted my drawbridge is struggling and they are getting a little bit closer okay we are going to tell them to link this can't I need it built [Music] okay foreign wow that was game um yeah so I hope you guys enjoyed the burrow thing I lost my fort dang that really sucks I was really enjoying this fort so far um yeah get get your military up quick I will be doing a guide about that maybe in the next World um so yeah um definitely get a burrow set up definitely get your military set up but to get the barrel set up and everything um pausing and unpausing that burrow if the Highlight is around it that is telling you everybody in the borough hey don't worry about where the burrow is don't worry about what it's doing um go do whatever you need to do now if you take that highlight off it is just a little pause icon um then that means that your Burrows active that's saying hey everybody get inside and we're gonna wait and you'll see a bunch like these cancellations right here um it'll say like hey this person can't reach their job this person can't reach a material that's because the borough is working um so just ignore this and like I said if it's highlighted that means the barrel is paused that's saying hey go do whatever you need to do wherever it is you need to do it at um and then when you take that highlight off it's active everybody comes inside so if you enjoyed it and this did help you out leave a like subscribe I can't believe I just lost my fort um I will see you guys in the next video check out my channel for any other guides playthroughs anything like that on Dwarf Fortress and I appreciate you guys checking out this video peace [Applause]
