hi it's McCarran I was challenged by some to do the make a prom dress in a day challenge or since I'm too old for prom make an evening gown in the day challenge because who knows maybe next year someone will invite me to be their date to the Oscars and I'll need a dress to wear it's a full disclaimer I totally lied no one challenged me to do this I just made it out before bed last night because I was like I have the day off tomorrow and I want to get good at making evening gowns because I've never made one before and what better way to learn than to challenge myself to do it in a really small timeframe so first things first I went on a shopping spree a free shopping spree through my sewing room full of fabric that I have hoarded over the years so one really promising option was this gold stuff that I got for $2 a yard on clearance at Hobby Lobby because I have a ton of it but I also really liked this green and red fabric so I decided to look through my stash of trims to see you maybe that would help me make a decision there was this green stuff I got in LA that I really liked but there was also this gold stuff I got at jo-ann fabrics that I really like I am in love with this beaded red trim but it doesn't really match the red fabric I picked out so that's out and I really like this green but green looks good on me and I'm likely to botch this project since I'm making it in one day so I don't want to waste this fabric so I decided on the gold because gold looks awful on me and I'm likely to mess this up so it's perfect this is what time I started the project but if you're like me that means nothing to you because who can read those anyway I started at 108 I began by making this sketch and it was kind of based off of this gold leaf II trim that I knew I had somewhere and I had faith that I would be able to find it but spoiler alert I never found it and so I didn't use it but I thought the sketch was pretty so I threw it in anyway so to make the bodice I started out by tracing a shirt I had made a few weeks ago and really like the fit up and I traced that on to an oldies bag because you like that and then I traced that onto an old flannel sheet because I'm classy like that and then I cut it out on the fold and I cut out the side pieces as well and then decided to cut it down the middle because I kind of just decided to on a whim I wanted to put the flannel in between two layers of our special occasion fabrics there would be three layers all around the bodice so that it would have some stability so here you see me layering it up four layers why did I do that oh yeah so that there would be two layers on each side that's why I did that now we did have a moment of confusion right after I cut out all those pieces and I could not remember why I did but then I got my stuff together figured it out and so to layer a flannel to each of the inside pieces of special occasion fabric and after that I took two more cut out pieces of special occasion fabric and I put it on the doubled up pieces and I put them right sides together and I sewed all along the edges I didn't really want the insides to be all fray so I decided to take a candle to it now remember always blow the candle out after you're done using it nextly I turned all the pieces inside out and introduce them to my friend mr. irons repeated those same steps for the side pieces when I laid them all out and flipped them right sides together and pin them in place after that guess what I did it still time to guess I sewed it you guessed it this morning doesn't the sewing machine sound so cute when it's sped up you see here is me pinning the bodice to the dress form just to get a feel for it and I really liked it but there were some adjustments I needed to make so I marked those rather professionally with sidewalk chalk after making those adjustments I made the back of my bodice by laying out the pre-made pieces against several layers of fabric and I drew it and made it I don't know how to make that sound eloquent all that took me until four oh six and it was time to get cracking on that skirt now what you're about to see is my measuring process this is what happens when you hate numbers and hate measuring tapes yeah so I cut out a piece that was you know about about the size I needed it and I started doing some drapey things and I wasn't sure where I was going with the skirt if I wanted to do a mermaid style if I wanted to do what I drew etc etc so then I decided to go back to the drawing board when I came up with was something that I thought would be simple them and that was flattering and that I felt I could complete within the time frame so here I am attempting to drape what I sketched and I feel like now is a really good time to request that you ignore what I'm wearing okay so this shot is irrelevant but isn't it calming doesn't it remind you of the ocean Here I am straightening out all the wrinkles and the fabric so I can lay my first skirt piece on top of it and try to cut out an identical one for you know fullness and volume and I like honestly didn't really know what I was doing I was just winging it hoping it would fall into place so here I am yet again with another Aldi bag or do you guys say all these are Aldi okay regardless so I wanted to make a pattern for what are those things called that you put it darts I wanted to make darts and my skirt and I wanted them all to be even so I cut out any longer did triangle thing you might be redneck if you make your patterns out of grocery bags and trace on my sidewalk chalk just kidding I know I'm not a redneck nothing against rednecks though they're great to find I love them okay so here is me sewing the darts and this is what happens when you get $10 tripod off of ebay right here's a better shot of me selling the darts fYI I hot-glued the tripod back together and it's good as new which is not saying much okay and here I literally do not remember what I was doing here or what those pieces were for but I am assuming it was for a purpose so I had to put it in after sewing all the skirt panels together I started on my final draping and I put the pleats in place wow that's kind of a tongue twister I dare you to say it right now nice then I tried the skirt on myself to make sure it fit my actual waist and then I sewed the pleats in place and after that I sewed a waistband on to it no I sewed the bodice to the skirt I still wanted a waistband for fraying reasons and because it was going to show in the back back to the bodice I double folded the ends of the back under and sewed them in place and then I decided to make boning channels I really wanted this dress have a lot of stability as I have already said so I cut out some buckram channels and then I sewed them in place and after I did that I stuffed a little zip tie inside kind of like boning look how nice and stable so at this point I decided to mess around with the trim I wanted to make sure that I did indeed want it to be trimmed how I sketched it and I did not wanting to pin all that trim in place before selling it I decided to glue at first and then I realized I didn't have enough trim so I had to go to jo-ann's and get more luckily they still had it but I had to waste thirty minutes of my precious time and I was really stressed about this when I sewed the bodice to the skirt and I did it crooked because I was rushing it's really only visible in the back but I was pretty upset about that so hemming anything is really difficult for me because while my dress form is adjustable it doesn't get nearly close to my height so I always have to try propping it up on different things to make it my height and I finally found this basket lid that makes it perfect it was nice to sit in front of the TV and do some hand sewing it was very relaxing and out of frame but anyway I hand sewed to the hem and I hand sewed the trim on and I hand sewed the hook and eye closures on the back of the bodice and the back of the skirt and that was the last thing I did before I went to bed so I technically went to bed with a finished dress in my living room but remember I started at 108 so when I woke up the next morning I still had some time and I decided to use that time adding some pizazz and some sparkle to my dress doing some hand beading it was very time consuming but luckily for you I discovered time lapse finished and here is the final product oh wait you want to see it on me okay might have [Music] [Music]
