ladies gentlemen welcome back to the workshop it is fantastic to have you here because we get to make something that I could never ever make before it is a cane sword oh my goodness this is awesome it is a cane and inside the cane is contained the beautiful little nimble stabby slashing sword it is gonna be fantastic so thank you guys for joining us pull we hop into the video that's night today's sponsor which is Nord VPN so why not you own a cane so you might own a cane sword because you want to be walking down the street you know maybe got a little bit of a hobble maybe you're feeling a little bit of weak and you want to protect yourself well not VPN does just that by encrypting the data that you send to the websites that you browse and the data that comes back you can get 70% off a three-year plan at not VPN com forward slash forge and using code for checkout gets you an extra month for free Thank You Nora sponsoring the video let's jump back in while that steel heats up it's a great opportunity to talk about the next step which is wood shopping we don't have any wood that looks nice that you know the only way that we have in this size is Hickory it's really just not gonna look very nice luckily we've got some hardwood suppliers kind of locally that we can turn to see if we still kind of think like we'll not maybe you know cherry maybe something interesting like that yeah see if we can find some it was some nice grain structure to it then what we need to do we need to do this we'd find something that kind of split it in half and then make beautiful flat surfaces yes so I'm gonna Forge out the blade you want to give that a girl sure if you can get back here with these two things that we can imagine you know you should also buy a router you go to AC buy a router because then it means we have these two pieces we can route out the slot for the blade and it's gonna be out of cane yes sound good great let's do it now that I call that piece of 5/8 bar and I bear in mind that is an off cut of Damascus I'm gonna twist the daylights out of it but before I do that we'll check in and see how we'll is doing I'm getting some worth it okay so we've made it to the wood store I'm looking for a nice piece of walnut this will do superb Lee look at that nice figure now it's time to go to eight this could be a really bad idea this is exciting this could also be really dangerous don't try this at home surely everything newest idea then you see the smoke ha ha [Music] [Music] I thought of this before this is the greatest thing ever okay now we're in East obviously oh look a bucket with all of the things that are needed them handy well look you just go back how's the gun well so good Wow I brought okay so this is for the scabbard duct tape yes lovely that's the same as the one that I made for my kukri by Alec what would you do that's awesome way to get this not get any footage because I forgot didn't saw anything No what happened to the board it was fine a second ago yeah it's just the cost of theatrics against well probably still just about make it out of this I think we've got enough between these two knots and these cracks here to here something like that peasy lemon squeezy well we'll crack some on the woodwork I'm gonna Ford you out this blade mount twisted stock [Music] I'm pretty worried about whether we can get a sword out of this this is not a lot of material something like 18 inches long right now this is worrying there's no way this is going to work [Music] don't worry show it is not a tea shop [Music] Oh wick whoa that's not too terrible I'm worried because of the twisting we might have a lot of cold shot or areas where the metal is going to fold it over on itself as it's twisted and has infused back together it's a worry and that's why I don't like forging this so thin because it means we don't have the room to grind through it but if we don't have cold shots we might just make the lights we meet not gonna lie to ya like it's not going very well uh why not I just can't get something this flat this long flat on the belt sander for the disa tuner Jason's backing on this see if you can run awesome [Music] [Applause] oh yeah yes indeed ladies and gentlemen we definitely do not have the profile that we intended to have I had to take some of the width down on this side but once we forge a Tang we're gonna have ourselves first right amount of Steel for a cane sword provided we don't have those cultures yeah that's amazing jam it through the planer that is so nice yeah it worked out really well well we have good neighbors that's awesome [Music] you know that time where I said we were all good I can't make a tank out of that so gonna be a little shorter but I reckon we can forge this whole thing down got it better the hopefully great I'm gonna do that before I touch the tank then thank you for that [Music] [Applause] oh is this what you're gonna use for the handle I think so I think it's gonna I think it's going to look for this tazzie Blackwood has mania and Blackwood so yeah beautiful that'll look good it'll be a similar color will have bangin figure you shake a baby this is gonna be awesome no there's a reason I don't look for the tip and that's because common way for long things like this to walk is along the length of it and so a tip that I've heard might be discarded the Viking swords you don't grind or Forge the tip in until after he dream after he tree because then if it warps you can grind it straight you're happy we're not doing normalizing cycles just now let's just heat treat the thing right off to getting the scale off yeah so there we go that's all we're gonna do we're just going to grind the scale off and then we're gonna heat treat it [Music] [Music] [Music] before I start straightening it I'm just looking for any post just elect to bring them out [Music] okay I'm not going to take off the material from the side [Music] [Music] I've got two pieces of bronze here then we're using for the guard and spacer on the handle and they need to get flat before we can use them for that and they need to get thinned down so I'm coming over to the mill to flatten them down drill some holes in them get them off in the exact shape that we need [Music] there we go that's up ground ready for heat Street blade yeah how exciting do you want to see how much weight it's already lost how much well it's been on the keto diet so probably a lot Wow Giada does 1 pound 8 ounces 5 ounces dang made a lot of dust that's killer this thing is gonna be it's gonna be like a stretched-out stiletto I'm gonna be so light it's gonna be so nimble it's gonna be like a rapier it's gonna be amazing super super nice this is going to be awesome gonna be killer this is the handle stuff Tasmanian black wood bronze and some of that light ivory micarta this is SuperDuper cool oh yeah this is a Paragon heat reeking oven this is a modular and stackable 50 inch of them they are a sponsor of the show they also provided this for us full disclosure the section has the brains of the oven and you can very simply unplug some cables remove a section and drop it down or remove two sections and drop it all the way down to have whatever size oven you want weights usually grateful for these guys being a sponsor of the show because they're the best in the business and it's gonna help possibly the best heat treatment we can the thing is a beauty okay we are going to set it to fifteen hundred and fifty degrees for our first normalizing cycle fifteen hundred degrees for the quench let's get it up to temperature Alec is in the office on the phone right now we're gonna have a quick look at the pattern see how it's coming out is this even Damascus a little bit confused drain Eila because I cannot see the pattern this might not be the steel that we thought it was oh this might be the 800 layer that's not good okay so before we throw it into the kiln we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna poke a hole in this handle so that we'll be able to suspend it using wire inside the pea treating evidence and we're gonna go in for normalizing cycle number one I'm gonna let it heat up let it cool down do that two more times and then clench that's terrifying yep I had a beautiful even heat on the thing though I say we don't worry about straightening in hardening we straighten it in the tempeh once or twice some bad things have happened when we straighten it in the hardening which is okay well that looks pretty good that looks pretty dang straight looks straight as an arrow I don't know what kind of arrows oh we got a little bit of a corkscrew going on in it worse things have happened yes they have which is what a great day's work good stuff we've started on a cane the sword this cop this is just brilliant oh my goodness turn into a katana nothing that was intentional' oh oh thank goodness we didn't grind the chip in just yet yeah that's not terribly easy this is this is a difficult one that's a lot there's a straight edge [Music] but Oh [Music] oh my goodness that was petrifying oh and we got a bend oh we got a bend and a katana ah good a neat things you've been to fix nice good work will and 1/8 inch that way lovely so much for thanking today's sponsor in good spirits I'm joking we will thank today's sponsoring good spirits thank you nort VPN for keeping us all safe while it is that we're online I like Nord VPN especially when I'm traveling because if you have to use a public network you leave yourself so much more open to getting hacked when you don't have the data that you are sending to and from the websites you're browsing encrypted and not VPN does just that they have thousands and thousands of servers in over 60 countries and those servers will work as an intermediary between you and the website you browse using their apps for iOS Android Mac or PC you can easily connect to a server in whichever country you want and say you want the websites your browsing to think you're browsing from France it's as easy as that this gives you extra anonymity while it is that your online and while you're browsing and it also means that you can access and stream certain content that might not be allowed in your country which is handy say you want to watch a show that you're watching when you're here in the US but you go abroad you can't watch it when you're abroad you can watch it with not VPN nor VPN has been keeping you guys safe for a long time there are longtime sponsor of the show and we are so grateful for you supporting them you can get protected at noir VPN com forward slash forge where you're gonna get 70% of a three-year plan that means you're protected for just 349 a month code forgit check out also gets you an extra month for free thank you guys so much it's been a blast see on the next episode bye bye
