what's up guys my name is Brandon and you just got the new M4 iPad Pro you've already unboxed it you've gone through the initial setup process but now you might be wondering what's new this year and what should I do next well I've got the answers for you because in this video I'm going to be showing you the first 17 things that you need to do after getting your brand new M4 iPad Pro to get the absolute most out of it so these are going to be tips tricks and just things you need to know about this iPad okay so this first one is very simple and straightforward but it's important so I need to address it and that is to check for a software update the iPad did not come with the latest software update installed so if you didn't do that in the initial setup process be sure to update your iPad to the latest iPad OS version by going to settings General software updates the next thing you need to do is give document scanning another chance or if you always scan documents just try it with the new iPad Pro because it is much better so Apple removed the old Ultra wide camera and now we only have that single 12 megap wide camera but Apple added something more useful than the second lens and that is adaptive true tone flash so Apple says that using AI the new iPad Pro automatically identifies documents and if a shadow is in the way it instantly takes multiple photos with the new adaptive flash stitching the scan together for a dramatically better scan and I thought this was kind of a gimmick at first but it actually is much better than previous iPads so you'll notice that these Shadows are just non-existent even when you have shadows in real life just hovering over the document that you're trying to scan and by the way if you don't know how to scan documents you can do this in multiple ways so the easiest way that I find is in the control center if you have the notes toggle added in the control center just haptic press on that and you can scan document straight from the control center or if you're like me and you have the Notes application down here in the dock you can just have to press on the app icon and you can scan document straight from there now you can also do this in the files application so if you go to the files app and find any blank space you can just tap and hold right there and it'll pull up the option to scan documents or you can go to the three dots up here in the top left and you can scan documents from there as well and speaking of documents and files the next thing you should do is add frequent folders as favorites over here so if you're anything like me and you've been playing the new Delta emulator if you have any type of emulator application on your device and you want to you know have a folder full of ROMs I would suggest adding that to favorites you can tap and hold right here and select favorit or you can take and drag that folder over here to favorites and now you can always easily access that folder or that specific file right over here in the sidebar which is very handy and makes it easy to access your you know frequently used folders this next tip is very important because you're probably planning on keeping your M4 iPad Pro for multiple years I would imagine and if you are going to keep it for multiple years you likely want to have good battery life even 3 four 5 years down the road this setting that I'm about to show you is going to help you extend your iPad Pros battery lifespan so go into settings and then down here go to the battery section on the side and then go to battery health and on the new iPad Pro we have a new option for 80% limit I would suggest turning that on and as you can see the description shows your iPad will only charge to about 80% and having this feature enabled is going to help increase the longevity of your battery health and battery capacity so it's at 100% now but as you guys know from the iPhone that capacity goes down over time and that is based on the battery degradation and having this set to only charge up to 80% is going to limit the amount of battery Cycles which in turn is going to help keep your batter's capacity High Apple says reducing the time that your iPad spends fully charged reduces the wear on your battery limiting charging to 80% can help prolong your batteries lifespan so that is straight from Apple so I'm going to recommend everybody turn that on okay so you've probably already used Center Stage before it's not a new feature but you need to use it on the M4 iPad Pro because it is now better than ever on an iPad and that's because of the new landscape camera so now it's going to be able to track you from further away because it's centered and not off to one side like it was with the portrait camera beforehand and I say centered but it's not actually dead center in the iPad and I'm sorry you're never going to be able to unsee that and you can always Access Center Stage as well when you're in a video call if you swipe down to go into the control center and you'll see that we have video effects up in the top right so tap on that and this is where you can turn on or off center stage if you didn't want it on you can turn it off right there this is also where you access the portrait mode Studio light and reactions you could also adjust the amount of portrait depth and also for the studio light the intensity of that studio light just a quick reminder be sure to download the written PDF companion guide that complements this video it includes everything that I'm covering here along with screenshots and written instructions that way you never forget anything from this video or future videos it's included as one of many perks in my monthly membership which you can join by clicking the link down in the description below now the next thing you need to do is understand both of Apple's multitasking systems that are built in to iPad OS so you're probably the most familiar with the first one which is split view which is when you go into an application and you swipe up from the bottom to pull up the dock and then you open up another application you tap and hold and pull it over to one of the sides and you can see that now we have a split view here and you have these three dots up top as well where you can put one in full screen slide over or split view so that is the first one and the second one is what we see there as slide over so this is when you're in a you know multitasking view already and you go ahead and take another application and drag this into the middle right here and you can see it has a different shape it's a little bit skinnier and when you let go that pulls it over here to the side so now we have three different applications opened up at once and I could also you know push this off to the side if I want to so if I push that over you can see we have a little arrow now so we can pull that back out anytime we want to we could also add other applications to that so if we take the App Store here and put it over top you can see that we can go in between the different applications in that slide over View and anytime that you see these three dots up top you can see you have the option to change between split view you can choose left or right split so if I wanted to send this over to the left split you can see it puts it right back over there and you can do that with any of these or you can also just close it and that will make the other app full screen and quick plug if you're not subscribed to the free Apple Dead news newl I will leave that down in the description below as well it's just theapple den.com and speaking of multitasking it gets even more sophisticated and advanced once you understand stage manager so this is accessed through the control center which you pull down from the top right corner and this right here is going to be the stage manager option and if you tap on that it will turn it on you can also haptic press on that and it will show if you want to turn off the doc or recent apps or both you can turn off both and it will just turn off stage manager essentially it's going to hide everything but we're going to keep both of those enabled just to show you how this works so once you enable stage manager you could just open up any application and it's going to put you in this View and it's going to show you your other applications that are currently opened now what's cool with this is that you can minimize these windows you can kind of just move them around wherever you want to and you have a lot of freedom here there's not really any where you cannot put an application which is really nice so if I want to pull something else out here I can do that and I can just change it you just kind of grab these little black you know uh these little black things in the corner right here and that's what's going to allow you to change the size we could pull something else up here so if I want to pull up mail we can do that and you know we can see that this one's on the left side so we can make it smaller that way and this way you can just have a bunch of different applications open up at the same time and you can really get some sophisticated multitasking going on here which is pretty cool and uh you know you can go ahead if you lose it you can always just go ahead and open up one of the other apps and it will open up back to where you were you also have these three dots up top where you can enter into full screen you can add another window so if we go ahead and add another window you can see it shows everything we have here so if you want to get a better you know view of what you have opened you can do that so we'll just open up let's just say free form for example and now that opens up on this stage and we can kind of if you want to move something in front of something else you can kind of just move it just like so so you can do a lot with this and you can see all your recent applications over here as well it's a lot of fun especially if you are doing multiple things at once on your iPad and one thing you might want to do as well to get more out of stage manager especially on a 13-inch iPad Pro and not just for stage manager just in general is go into your settings and then go to display and brightness and then go down here until you see display zoom and from here you might want to select more space that's going to give you more space on your home screen settings everywhere so we're going to select more space and tap onone and it will reset our device here it's going to do a little quick restart and we're going to have a different resolution now so you can see that it comes up and now we all of a sudden have more room everything is a little bit smaller but we have more room we can fit more applications in our Center Stage here for multitasking and just in general you can see that everything is a little bit smaller but we do have more room to mess with now the next one is just something else that you need to know about your iPad Pro and that is that it's the first iPad with an av1 decode engine now av1 is a newer video Codec that gives you more efficient video compression without compromising on video quality and the main advantage of that is streaming highquality videos is going to use less data and you're going to have less buffering so smoother video playback with less buffering and less issues and keep in mind YouTube uses av1 as does Facebook Instagram and most platforms use the av1 video Codec so everything should play smoother on your iPad Pro M4 and speaking a video I did also want to explain the dynamic volume buttons because if you're new to an iPad this might be a little bit confusing I'm not sure if it's on any other tablets out there but basically if you are in you know landscape mode for example and the volume buttons are on the top that's different than when you know it's up and down when it's on the side of a tablet so that means that the volume down button which is typically volume down if you're holding it in portrait will be volume up in landscape mode so if we press on the down you can see it turns the volume up and if we Press On what used to be the volume up in portrait mode that turns the volume down because it's based on the orientation that's what Apple calls Dynamic volume buttons now you cannot change this you cannot disable this on the iPad Pro that's just how it always is so just keep that in mind and kind of get used to that now something else you really need to get used to is all of the gestures that you can do on the iPad Pro and I can make a whole video about this I believe I already have but there are so many gestures that you need to understand to make your life a lot easier with the iPad Pro so the first one is one that we also have on the iPhone that you might be pretty familiar with and that is to swipe on the bottom to go in between different applications and you can see that it even goes between split screen applications if you have those opened up so this little black bar down there you can just swipe left and right to go quickly in and out of your different applications instead of you know going into this view right here which by the way the way you do that is you tap right here you swipe up and hold and that's how you can get get to your you know app switcher right here so when you're in an application to go home most people know that you can just swipe up right there just swipe up from the bottom and that will take you to the home screen however that's rarely how I get home I usually use a four finger pinch I've just gotten so used to this over the years that I always four finger pinch to go to the home screen so just take your four fingers here I like using these three fingers and my thumb and just do like this right there and that's going to take you to the home screen it might seem like it's you know kind of redundant and and slower but once you get the hang of it and once you do a lot of gestures it gets like second nature that is just the way I go home and it's much easier for me so we saw the app switcher a little bit earlier but I will take you there again as well because if you want to close out of applications for whatever reason if something is you know giving you a hard time you could just swipe up to close out of those applications and you can see it does it just like so you could also go into jiggle mode by just tapping and holding right here anywhere in the blank space and that will allow you to remove applications or add you know a new widget to your home screen we also have the notification center that you pull down from the middle right there so if you pull down the top middle that will bring up your notification center and your lock screen right here the top right is going to be your control center so it is based on you know the the kind of Direction on the top of the screen so just make sure you're away from the right side and you will pull up the notification center even if it's all the way over here on the left and then perhaps my favorite gesture of all is making the keyboard small so anywhere throughout iPad OS if you want to make your keyboard small especially on the 13-in iPad Pro simply just pinch it just pinch with two fingers and you can you can do you know two fingers on the same hand and that will make it small you could also make it large you can move this around you know wherever you want by using that little bar at the bottom and you can make it large by pinching outward so pinch in to make it small pinch out to make it large that's one of my favorite gestures on iPad OS especially on the bigger models and another one of my favorite gestures is actually going to be the next thing you need to do because this is an important one that you need to enable in settings so if we go into our settings here and then we go down to multitasking and gestures go down to the bottom here and we will see the next thing you should do which is enable swipe finger from corner and if you turn that on you get the option for bottom left corner and bottom right corner so let me show you what that is so the bottom left corner if I swipe from that corner it's going to invoke and take a screenshot very quickly without having to press the buttons and from the right bottom right corner it's going to open up a quick note in notes so you can change that you can turn one of the corners off if you want or you can change these around but I like having it set as default if anything I may just do the screenshot for the bottom right and bottom left corner because I screenshot so much and you can also do the same gesture with the apple pencil without the need of enabling that setting so even if we go ahead and turn this setting off swipe finger from corner if you have an apple pencil this still works if I swipe up from the right hand side the right corner you can see it takes that screenshot for me and that was just using the native built-in apple pencil feature which is awesome you can if you want to turn this off for whatever reason you can go into the apple pencil section right here and you will see down here we have pencil gestures where you can toggle these to screenshots quick note or off now on the topic of the apple pencil let's talk about the apple pencil Pro because there are multiple new features with the apple pencil Pro that we've not seen before on an apple pencil so the first one is haptic feedback so if you pinch in on this it will invoke this new haptic feedback on the pencil itself you'll feel that little subtle vibration but it also pulls up this new pet here where you can change your tools you can change the color you can change everything very easily without having to go across the interface to access that you know tool set or the color whatever the case may be so that is awesome and also you can now just simply tap to change between tools so instead of pressing all the way in and squeezing you can just tap you know double tap right there and that will change to the Eraser double tap again and that will change to the pin as you can see in the bottom left hand corner and you also get hatic feedback when you do that now what's really awesome is something called barrel roll and this is going to be available on select tools only so it's not available on everything but this is really awesome and I'm going to show you why so we're going to have this set up here and you can see that when I go to write something I go to draw something the orientation changes based on the way that I'm rot rotating my wrist the way I'm rotating the apple pencil so the new Apple pencil pro has a gyroscope built in that's how it's able to do this and it's pretty awesome so that's really great for artists who want to be really precise with their work and be able to see you know the orientation before they actually put the pencil down and draw and then if you go into the settings and go to the apple pencil section this is where you can see all your different settings you can change the squeeze you can have that do different things right there you can have the double tap do something different which is where you don't squeeze you just kind of tap two times you have all your different effects right here you have only draw with apple pencil so it says that your fingers are going to be used for scrolling instead of actually drawing when you're on a canvas and then we also have scribble right here which is awesome I'll show you how this works so if you select this tool and you start writing you can see that it will type out what you actually write so we're going to just type in this is super cool and you can see that it actually is pretty accurate with it as long as your handwriting is good my handwriting is not great but it still gets it 90% of the time at least probably 95% of the time so that's a cool feature especially if you are somebody who does a lot of notes if you are in school and you you know do a lot of notes scribble is great because you can quickly and easily write and it will convert that into text and just a couple of other tips about the apple pencil that are not exclusive to the apple pencil Pro but they're just things that you need to know if you draw shapes a lot and you know you're not going to have it perfect every time so if I draw a triangle or a circle or a square you can see it's not perfect every time but this one is and that's because I held down on the pin so what I mean by that is if I draw a triangle and keep holding down I don't let off the screen until it perfects that shape so here we go again a square I'm not going to let go until it perfects the shape Circle not going to let go that one wasn't even good so it didn't trigger that so we'll try that again with a circle and there we go it made it as perfect as it could be so that is cool also if you're somebody who does a lot of handwriting so if I wrote a sentence and I wrote this is not straight is it and obviously it's not a straight sentence we can select that so if we tap and hold and select that text and then tap again we get the option right here if we swipe over to straighten so that is an option as well if you want to straighten your text you can do that and now it's going to do its best to straighten out the handwritten text that you just wrote and if you do not have a saved signature to be able to easily sign documents in the future you should go ahead and do that so you can access this from the panel down here the apple pencil panel tap on the plus and then go to add signature and from here you you can go to add or remove signature and you're just going to tap on the Plus in the top leftand corner and this is where you should go ahead and draw out your signature so there we go I signed my name and if I tap on done now anytime I go into you know a document where I need to enter my signature it's always going to be saved there now the next thing you need to do is take advantage of keyboard shortcuts on the magic keyboard so if you don't have a magic keyboard if you have any other keyboard you know that attaches to your iPad this should work as well but the magic keyboard is the best I think it is worth the money I know it's expensive but basically if you have a magic keyboard these are some awesome keyboard shortcuts that you need to know so if you press command H that it's going to go home so that's a quick and easy way to go to the home screen command and W is going to close the current window command spacebar is the one I use the most that is to show and hide the spotlight search which is how I personally open up all of my applications and also how I run shortcuts command Shift 4 is going to take a screenshot and immed medely open up markup to view or edit that screenshot kind of just like on the Mac the globe key and the up arrow is going to take you to the app switcher easily and then command tab is going to allow you to see the nine most recent applications that you've accessed now the next thing you need to do is customize your iPad and make it your own so this is what the iPad came with this is how it looked by default doesn't look great doesn't look bad but here's what it looks like now so you can see that my home screen looks a lot better because I changed the wallpaper I have all these custom widgets now that are actually things that I want to look at unlike you know the news and you know the clock right there when I have the clock right above it that's redundant I don't need that so now it's actually stuff that I need so we want to go ahead and change that so the first thing you should do is change your wallpaper so go to your settings here actually don't even need to go to the settings just swipe down at any point and tap and hold on the lock screen here and you can just create a new wallpaper so I can actually go back to the original if I wanted to but just tap on the plus down here in the bottom right hand corner and from here you can select one of the defaults so if we go down to collections right here you can see that we have the new iPad Pro exclusive wallpapers it's just this one color I think it looks pretty cool but it can get kind of old pretty quickly so you can also change this to the hello which is in different styles which I think is really cool because it does have an animation as well or you can have custom wallpapers which is what I did here so for the actual lock screen though you can change that so if I wanted to have the lock screen be hello let's just say I wanted that in blue we're going to add that and you can set that as a wallpaper pair or you can customize home screen and from here select a different photo so if I wanted to have this as my you know uh home screen wallpaper I can change that and I can kind of just you know scale it to wherever I want it to be and now all of a sudden that is going to be my home screen wallpaper and I have a different lock screen so here is my lock screen I'm actually in a focus mode right now so that is my lock screen and here is my home screen now that I changed the wallpaper and then you should also add some widgets to the home screen you have a lot of real estate here especially on the 13-in model even on the 11-in model if you're in landscape mode you have a lot of space here on the iPad so you need to go ahead and add some widgets so you can do that by tapping and holding anywhere on the screen and tapping the plus up in the top leftand corner and from here you could add these widgets from you know whichever one you want so if I go to podcast for example you can see you have different sizes and to add that you can just simply tap add widget and then you can move it around wherever you want to so we're going to remove that I like what I have set up right here and I'd also recommend deleting a lot of the applications that came with your iPad so things like as long as you don't actually use them so things like tips things like Garage Band Clips Pages numbers all of those I would recommend deleting those or at least removing them from the home screen so you don't have to actually delete them so if I take you know press and hold on keynote for example and go to remove app you can see that you don't have to delete the application you can just remove it from the home screen that way it cleans it up and you can always access that by swiping over on your last page swipe over again and that will take you to the app Library where you can find all of your applications in here even the ones you removed from the home screen and then also add your most recent applications to the doc so if you use procreate a lot if you're a big you know procreate user I would take and drag that and just put it down there in the dock so you always have quick and easy access to it in the dock oh and by the way I would also recommend going into your settings and go to home screen and app library and go ahead and go to newly downloaded apps do app Library only that way when you download a new application it doesn't junk up your home screen it only downloads it to the app Library which means you will not have the icon on your home screen you will have to add it manually from the app Library I would say to do that after you've already installed like your must-have applications that way you don't junk up your home screen and you can keep it simple oh and also you can hide p Pages as well so if you want to have a page like if I want to hide this entire page right here I can do that so all that you do to do that is go into jiggle mode right here and then tap on the dots in the middle and then deselect that page and you can see that now that page is hidden I cannot access that page anymore until I tap and hold and tap in there again I could also remove that entire page entirely so it's going to remove everything on that page but of course it's not going to delete the applications they'll just go to the app library but that is also nice you also reorganize these as well so if you want to change you know the order of your pages you can do that easily there as well I would also go ahead and change the control center toggle so if you swipe down from the top right you can see I have different control center toggles in here so if you go into your settings and go to control center this is where you can add and remove different options from your control center so to add something just go down here and tap on the ADD and if you want to remove something you can just press on the red minus and then remove that so these are the ones I like especially notes I think notes is very important to have in your control center the reason being is because when you go in here and you haptic press on that you can scan document very easily so if you scan documents a lot which a lot of people do myself included that is the preferred way I think to do it just because it's so quick and easy so once you've customized your iPad now we need to change some display settings so go to your settings and then go to home screen and app library and right here you might want to use large app icons so here is what it looks like right right now and if you want to use large app icons here's what it's going to look like on the home screen so your app icons are going to be large obviously as the name implies and this could be great for a lot of people especially if you don't have the best Vision if you always want to be able to see everything you know maybe if you have it propped up on a magic keyboard this can be very beneficial so you might want to have that turned on also one thing that drives me crazy is the auto lock I believe it's set to 2 minutes by default so we need to change that let's go to settings display and brightness and then down here we have auto lock I would recommend changing that to maybe like I don't know 10 or 15 minutes I would not recommend it setting that to never just in case you accidentally forget to lock your device so I would probably do I'm just going to do 15 minutes for mine but I would highly recommend not having it on 2 minutes because it gets pretty annoying when the screen just dims all the time and then below that we have the display Zoom if you want to have larger text or more space and then below that we have the advanced tab which is going to show one option for reference mode which is to color match and Auto brightness is enabled by default but if you want to disable that for whatever reason you can go into accessibility and then to display and text size and then all the way down at the bottom we have auto brightness I would recommend keeping that on I just turned it off for this video but that is on by default and I would recommend that we do also have a few other things in here you might want to look through especially reduce white point so if you want to reduce the intensity of bright colors you can do that that's also how you can get your iPad to be darker than even the lowest brightness setting so the next thing you need to do is use Spotlight search for everything and I mean almost literally everything so to enable this if you don't have the magic keyboard which if you do have the magic keyboard it's just command space just like it is on the Mac but if you don't have that just swipe down from anywhere on the screen and that will pull up the spotlight search right here and what you can do from here is like I said everything so the first thing I use this for is the calculator because as we know as of iPad OS 17 is no default calculator application for the iPad so I use this as my glorified calculator application so if I want to know what this number actually I put a letter in there so if we want to know what this number times so we can put times it is a little bit you know hard to use but if we put that in there you can see the result very easily you don't have to press you know equals or anything like that it shows it and you can copy it very easily just like so you could also do this for conversion so if I want to know what 765 USD to p pound is it will show me that right there so 765 USD is 63 British pound and you can do that for all types of other conversions as well now I also like doing this for opening up applications if you want to open up applications you can do that right there you can see the top hits you can open it easily that way you could also run shortcuts from Spotlight search so even if I start typing in shortcuts it shows some of my recent ones right here and I can launch these straight from the spotlight search without going in to the actual you know shortcuts application which is pretty awesome so we'll just type in the name of one of my shortcuts which is open app and you can see it shows right there and we can just tap go right here and it's going to open up that shortcut or open up that application which the shortcut was just to open up the X application so that is really convenient to have right there you can also search for files so if I want to search for like some of my ROMs so you can see ROMs is one of my folders in files so I can search for that and that is the top hit I can go into there and it shows all of my ROMs you can even search for text that shows up in a photo and it will show up in the spotlight search so if I type in iPad OS and go down to the bottom you can see we have photos right here and it found a photo that matches that says iPad OS in it so it's going to show that right there so it's pretty awesome you could also search for things like cat dog whatever and it will show your photos from your photo library and then the final thing you need to do on your iPad Pro is to annotate your documents in the Notes application and not in the files application or in preview so this is a new feature in iPad OS 17 where you can annotate your documents in the Notes application and you can also autofill so we have this right here so if we're going to pinch and just make this bigger you can see that we have some forms here some little you know text fields to fill out and if we tap on that it's going to automatically detect those fields so we have to go into the markup mode first and then if we tap right there you can see that it has my name right there and you could also go to choose other and you can choose any of your contacts as well so we're just going to choose my name and it's going to fill out all of my details so you can see now that it's filled in the address the name the post code and the city all correctly just based off of my own personal information and I did not need to fill that in myself I also did not need to draw or try to annotate that myself either it's all in there as text and then if you want to add a signature to a document in the notes app it's really simple because you can just press in on the apple pencil Pro and then tap the three dots right here and then you'll see the signatures icon and you can select your signature straight from there and it will add it in to your document and you can resize that and position it wherever you want to so those are the first 17 things that you should do after getting your M4 iPad Pro and again if you want to get access to the PDF companion guide to go along with this video so you don't forget everything and you don't have to re-watch this entire video again that will be linked down in the description below and if you want to see more tips and tricks and more videos on the iPad Pro be sure to subscribe to the channel because I will have more coming but anyways guys thanks for watching and I'll see you soon
