I've always wondered about my family's history my grandma's told me the odd tale so it's time I piece it all together my family's story ancestry sponsors of long-lost family I was left in a corned-beef box decided to wear way to heaven Hotel I was straight out of the womb and put into a pillowcase and left on the doorstep I was left in the toilet at st. Thomas's Hospital foundlings people abandoned as babies often in the first hours or days of life this is where it all started for me somewhere in this facility my mother felt she had no choice but to abandon me born without a trace findings have had no way to unlock the secrets of their past where is my history where did I come from being a foundling I've got nothing to not know where your roots are it's not just being dropped out of spaceship but now we hope to solve the mysteries of these foundlings beginnings in this groundbreaking program we've brought together a unique group of foundlings who've all had their DNA tested by comparing their DNA to millions of others and with painstaking detective work she lived here less than a mile away that can't be a coincidence we'll use an extraordinary new technique to try and trace both families there's a big story to tower right it's so rare for a foundling to see a picture of their mother in this program a woman left at five days old in a cardboard box it's like my birth parents just vanished a man found as a newborn in a hospital car park I've got nowhere to turn to no information nothing and a woman abandoned on a doorstep desperate to find her birth mother time is running out if I can't find anything through DNA then I'm never gonna find anything but can we piece together their pasts and bring them the answers they're searching for this little bit saliva he's gonna be my identity for hope [Music] one of the most famous foundling cases to hit the headlines was Jamie Duffy as a baby he was wrapped in a towel placed in a carrier bag and left in the grounds of a hospital in Portsmouth 30 years ago at the time the nationwide appeal for Jamie's mother to come forward led to a woman calling a police hotline incredibly Jamie then known as Ben has a copy of the recording [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah I smile supposedly as far as he's clearly apparent that she was upset the fact that she mentions that she couldn't look after me is obviously quite key she must have been desperate I wish she left some more information she didn't Jamie now lives in Maidstone with his wife Rachel and three children two months after being found as a newborn Jaime was adopted at 14 his parents told him the truth about his start in life I recall having a conversation with my mom and it got a bit emotional because I just couldn't grasp as to why someone would abandon a child at such a young age in his early 20s Jamie's parents gave him a file of newspaper clippings from the time he was left the carrier babe savers which is all to do with the children that found me Maria Buckner 11 and Julie Allen 12 and four friends found the baby boy on Sunday afternoon the hospital sources told the girls the baby would have died had they not found him he's quite a scary fall but I do take home from being left in the hospital grounds Jamie's birth mother was never found having been abandoned you feel that you're not wanted and loved sort of discarded there were three very strong circumstances to leave me I want to know why it happened until recently it would be impossible for a foundling like Jamie to identify his birth parents but now there's a chance DNA testing could help him find them strange the fact that something so small and simple he could answer the questions that I've had ever since I've known that I was abandoned while Jamie waits for the results of his tests another foundling hopes that DNA will help her find her birth family Karin Morton was abandoned on a doorstep in Manchester 60 years ago she's been searching for the birth mother who left her there for more than two decades her desperate plea for information has been broadcast across national TV and radio she discovers then when she been found in a cardboard box she was only five days old the truth is that she'll never find out why her biological parents left her I'm on my way to Grafton Street which is the place where I was left as a baby sixty years ago now four years ago Karen was even a guest on Nicky Campbell's radio show utterly heartbreaking imagining what a woman must have been going through to well to leave you at five days old in a cardboard box in Manchester that must have plagued your mind I know and that's where my thoughts are concentrated now really I'm just thinking what must her experience of being Karen was left at 11:00 at night next to a building that's now a carpark this is where I was found this is where it all started for me it's very different to how it is now it was very old terrace houses but in breakfast places I was left on the doorstep of a place where local people would go and have a few drinks I think my birth mother left me there knowing that I would be found because I was well looked after and I was warned that means an awful lot to me to know that after being abandoned as a baby Karen was taken into care and adopted at five months old she grew up in Manchester just a few miles from where she was left it's very close to my dad my mom was very hands-on but I guess it's fair so she liked emotional warmth Karen always knew she was adopted but it wasn't until she had her own children that her thoughts turned to her birth family when I was started to make sense of being a mom myself and what being a mom meant I then thought I think about my own birth mom age 38 Karen asked to see her adoption file to find out who her birth mother was when I went into Social Services office at expected to just be given a fire were the birth certificate that this is your birth mom and this is where you were born but that was something what happened I remember the social workers gave me a file and then she left me to read it on my own this is the first thing that I saw Emily open my file abandoned [Music] mother putative father and they've just got thick black lines through it I just felt devastated but shocked as well it's just not expecting to read that at all in any way it made me feel like rubbish like he didn't exist [Music] it says PC 57 found the child I think you have his name just no names in my file at all not even on professionals from nurses to social care staff and the Children's Home to PC 57 I don't have anything that I can grasp looking at all I don't understand it Karen herself wasn't given a name till she was four months old the title dismembers just unknown child I says it has been decided that the child shall be named Elizabeth Rylands so I've lived for four months without a name that's very hurtful after I found out what happened I just went home and cried and cried and cried and cried and cried ever since she discovered she's a foundling Karen's been searching for her birth mother but after 20 years all she's found are some articles and old photos of Grafton streets I now know that this photo here was directly opposite where I was found mr. Grafton hotel and I am wonder whether my birth mother was actually staying there she could have been watching me from the window to make sure that I was found but I think to care for a baby and then leave the baby like that must be absolutely harrowing what led her to be in that situation to do that and what led me to be put in a cardboard box or Grafton Street foundling Jamie Duffy is searching for the birth mother who left him as a newborn baby next to a hospital I've got nowhere to turn to no information nothing now with the DNA there is the glimmer of hope Jamie's DNA test could help him find blood relatives while he waits for the results we've got news about one of the girls who found him as a newborn baby hello Jamie hi we have Myers to trace Murray who came across you in the grounds of Queen Alexandra Hospital she's always wondered what happened to you and she would absolutely love to meet you amazing I hope it helps you thank you very much thank you pleasure take care bye-bye on his way to meet Murray Jamie's heading to where he was left as a baby it's really strange to know that it's Portsmouth many times as a child and growing up shopping stuff but never actually been back to where I was abandoned Jamie knows he was left somewhere in what is now the hospital car park [Music] [Applause] [Music] switch lost for words it's probably one way to describe it the grounds are much bigger than I expected [Music] just hard to think that's right somewhere in this sort of facility [Music] my birth mother felt she had no choice but to abandon me [Music] [Music] local girl Marie Buckner was 11 years old when she found Jamie in the hospital grounds in 1988 they're now meeting for the first time since then [Music] I promised I wasn't gonna cry it's been the same for me this be so strange very serious it's amazing amazing to meet you likewise and like I'm so grateful without you and your friends I wouldn't be sat here today so it's on very grateful yeah 100% I've never ever ever forgotten the last we heard that you would you'd been fostered yeah and we were allowed to come and see you through the glass at the hospital before they moved you and in the last we heard how could it take anyone I said did you know where you were found yeah but it's quite hard to imagine exactly what it was like in 1988 if you like would go down and I can show you how how close you were I'd love to see exactly where it was and if you can see just through there where the white pillars are that was the main entrance to the hospital so pretty much where that blue car is yeah it's where you were we've been out playing and it was on our way back home we've heard a small noise and the bag was moving we thought it was kittens and then just sort of pulled the front part of the carrier bag back and you were just looking up at us and it all kind of froze then this finger that's where I started my life mr. Murray today was amazing to be able to thank her for what she did and it was lovely for her to be able to tell me a bit more information in relation to where I was found and how I was found she put you this close to the hospital this was constantly being walked through by staff and visitors she left you somewhere that someone would find you I've always believed that there was care from my birth mom so it was comforting to know that I was close to the main engines [Music] even though I have some answers to some of the questions that I've had the only person who can answer the true meaningful questions is my birth father the main question is why what led to me being abandoned why couldn't my birth mother look after me then why did she not keep me the DNA test is now the only hope jamie has for finding out his birth mother's identity Jamie's DNA has been analyzed by online databases that compare his DNA to millions of others who have already tested the database has come up with matches people who are biologically related to Jamie the most common relationship is a distant cousin with leading DNA detective Julia Bell and renowned specialist in tracing missing family Arielle Bruce we hope to use the DNA results to help foundlings like Jamie find birth family so how are things progressing with Jamie we've had some results in for him close relative male and what about there's 12.5% DNA show what does that tell us if someone shares 12 and a half percent of DNA these are the possible relationships right first cousin half uncle half nephew great grandfather great grandson great nephew how do we actually find out which it is we need to test within the wider family and that may help us find out about a parent while the teen try and trace Jamie's relatives we're hoping to find leads for foundling Karen Watterson who was left as a baby on a doorstep in Manchester this is where I was found this is where it all started for me I don't know who I am I don't know where I was born when I was born I don't know where I come from to feel properly whole I need to have that information for me DNA is my only hope with no birth records and nothing else to go on the only chance Karen has of finding her birth family is through DNA Karen's had her DNA tested and incredibly we have found a half-sister on one of the DNA databases Karen and her half-sister have either the same mother or father so have we managed to work out where their Karen and her half-sister share a mum or a dad let me show you so this shows the DNA that Karen and our half-sister share 22 chromosomes and then the sex chromosome the acts at the bottom when this X chromosome is a completely blue line it means they share a father they share a father that is amazing isn't it so have you got in touch with Karen's half-sister I have she's really shocked of course yeah to find out about Karen's existence but she's been wonderful and given a lot of information about their father his name was Gordon but there was a piece of news that Karen's half-sister gave us which is this he's done away he has died oh yes however Karen sisters giving me this oh my goodness a picture of her father Wow this is Gordon that's fantastic she's extraordinary isn't it out of respect away from the cameras we've told Karen that we found her birth father and that sadly he's passed away I've got a lot to tell Karen about her birth father not all of it straightforward and some of its gonna be hard to hear but for someone who's beginning in life was such a mystery it's gonna be extraordinary finding out who her father was [Music] are you - thanks I'm so sorry that we had to bring you sad news about your biological dad so that's really sad to hear that when did he pass away he died in 1974 so long telling the time ago how old was he when he does 43 so that's really really sad mm-hm he's called Gordon he was Irish and he moved to Manchester in his late teens and he married quite soon after he was a publican and one of the pubs that he worked in was in Grafton Street where you were left oh god that was incredible so maybe he could have known about me yeah so when he was married to his wife was that when I was conceived so he was with his wife then but his wife was not your mother they had eight children gosh Wow they had four before you gosh and they had a four after you also can't believe that they didn't know about you drawers I've actually got a photograph okay your father well then what is incredible amazing he's got much nicer hair than me nice and thick and wavy the nose and the eyes what's it like to see this it's just oh my gosh I really came from somewhere I didn't just appear in the street woman OH how did you get the filter through your DNA we came across a half-sister oh my god she would really love to meet you and talk to you about your family you're looking amazing Oh to hear that this all he wants to meet me that's what it's almost worth if someone meeting me that's great that's incredible thank you in a TV first we've brought together 20 foundlings who hope their DNA will help them unlock the secrets of their past I had nothing to go on until this DNA test and who knows where it's gonna lead there is that possibility that they print from my dead parents the ultimate would be to solve the mystery of my abandonment you might remember Ali Lata she had quite a high profile case she was a foundling looking for her birth mother and she even appeared on a long-lost family about three years going up [Music] Alley was abandoned in a block of flats in Grangemouth Scotland in the early hours of the 19th of February 1967 she was newly born and wrapped in a pillowcase I was left right there found by the paperboy I started squealing and when he pulled by the pillowcase there I was I [Music] just find it really difficult to think about it I don't I don't right Ali launched her widespread appeal to find her birth mother 15 years ago my next case mrs. desperate to find her mom and fill up what we'd in her life Allison joins me now for children Jessica Nate and baby Emma six months overseas his love to see you morning I've done everything to find my birth mother my appeal went in every newspaper in the country every Scottish newspaper every English national newspaper it was just everywhere somebody's got in or something uh-huh somebody has to know somebody has to know in 2003 a man called Ian hull came forward astonishingly he'd also been left as a baby in Grangemouth and a DNA test proved he was Ali's half-brother to know that all of a sudden he was a younger brother it was just it was just amazing but finding Ian didn't help Ali identify her birth mother the fact that we were both foundlings I think made it even more difficult as far as the search goes because it meant that my natural mother had abandoned two babies and I felt it would be even more difficult for her to come forward today Ali still has no idea who her birth mother is I turned 50 last year and it was quite difficult because obviously the older I get the older the person is that that left me and I do feel that time is running out it is very sad because I think even though somebody could just stand up and say it was big having exhausted all other options ally has had her DNA tested it's her last hope if I can't find anything through DNA then that'll be it I'm never gonna find anything our search team have some news on Ali's case Ali DNA tested a couple of years ago but she only had distant relatives but new matches are coming in all the time look at this a half-sister that's incredible Ali and her half-sister will share a parent so do you know which parent do they share a mother or a father we need to weigh up the evidence I have discovered where this half-sisters mother lived in the 1960s she lived here a portal road in Grangemouth this is where Ali was found in King seat Avenue it's less than a mile away that can't be a coincidence I don't think it is a coincidence so we've done some research in the Scottish records and I have this document our death certificate oh this is tough news so now that she's passed away how can we prove that this was Ali's birth mother we found that this lady has a living brother and we've asked him to test if he would show to be Ana's uncle it would prove we found that his mother as the team try and confirm the identity of Ali's birth mother they're still working on Jamie Duffy's case Jamie's story hit the headlines when he was left as a newborn baby next to a hospital in Portsmouth [Music] lost for words the grounds are much bigger than actually born without trace there would be no way for Jamie to find his family without DNA the DNA database identified a close relative for Jamie but the team weren't sure exactly how they were related so have they been able to find out any more about the family how's it going with Jamie we made contact with various people within the wider family group and asked whether they would consider undertaking tests for us and several people did and what can you get from that well we then worked out who Jamie's mother was she had been living in the right area at the right time so what what did you do then well we reached out to her but she hasn't been able to respond so far I think the combination of the absolute shock of being found combined with I'm sure the distress that she would have felt when she left him she was young at the time painful memories I mean I think that one can't underestimate the agony that a woman would feel it could take a very long time to resolve but having worked out who Jamie's mother was it made us then to understand a bit about her life at that time she was in a relationship with someone and through that we had an idea who Jamie's father is we made an approach to him he was really really shocked but I believe he will want to share some information with Jamie but it's really early days yet you know he's only just been found and so there are lots of considerations how incredible for Jamie to go from nothing to both birth parents six ordinary [Music] away from the cameras we told Jamie that we've found his birth mother and birth father and at this stage we don't know how things will unfold it must be a huge shock for Jamie to suddenly find out who both his birth parents are and it's going to take a while for that to sink in so I thought I'd come and check in and make sure he's okay [Music] [Music] hey Jamie that's me oh thank you thanks very much thanks for talking to me no you're welcome have you been a bit shell-shocked he's such big news and everything he's still sinking him really slowly I went into this hoping that I'd find my mum not expecting to find both my mom and my dad extraordinary when we told you we know who your birth mother is what was it like it was it was a massive shock the only word that can describe the whole sort of situation is just mind-blowing and just amazing it must have been hard for my mum and we don't know how well she has coped with it it may be that she's lived with this all her life as a secret I know if it was me and obviously I'm made it the same stuff I would be constantly thinking about it and sort of it would be a weight on my shoulders and one of the reasons why I want to find her is because I want to be able to forgive so forgive her and tell her that it's alright I've turned out to have a wonderful family of my own and sort of I've grown up to be Who I am today and the life that I have had has been wonderful obviously then came the next kind of huge piece of information which was that's your dad had also been traced which is extraordinary probably ten times more mind-blowing it's like whoa it just is I didn't expect it I didn't expect it at all it must be as shocking for him as it is for me so what do you hope for going forward I'd love to be able to meet both of them and sort of talk there is a possibility that my mom won't want contact but I really hope that she does Pengy we've been using DNA to try and help a group of foundlings identify their birth families we're still working on the case of Karen Waterton who was left as a baby on a doorstep we've already found her half-sister who shares the same birth father two weeks ago Karen decided to meet her and three other half siblings they chose to do this away from the cameras we literally got on from the beginning just like hello natural in a way and I could see physical similarities between all of us and that's what made me think oh gosh you know this is family Karen also found out about her birth father Gordon he was 6 foot 2 quite an attractive man quite sociable and they referred to him as our father I felt like a shared bond it was fantastic but that's not the end of our search for Karen we're still trying to find the identity of her birth mother and there's another lead on one of a DNA databases a first cousin having identified Karen's birth father the team know that the first cousin is related to Karen through her birth mother one of this cousins aunts must be Karen's birth mother I remember speaking to Karen some years ago on the radio talking to her about the fact that she was left on a doorstep and I've never forgotten it so what have we found out look at this five arms one of them is Karen's birth mother so how are you gonna know that though I have searched the records and sadly found that all of these women have died and that's really sad because that means that Karen's mother is deceased but we did manage to test one of the children of these aunts and I'd like to show you the result a half-sister and that means we can say for certain we know who Karen's biological mother was that's incredible it's amazing we've got this far we've identified Karen's birth father and now we know who her birth mother was sadly she's passed away but Karen's half-sister Kim has agreed to meet me and tell me about her Kim grew up with her mum in Manchester just a few miles from where Karen lived with her adopted family until we got in touch with her she had no idea she had a sister or that her mother left Karen as a baby so how have you been feeling well that's all doesn't found it hmm I hope no one I do so when were you born 54 so you were round about four is that right and Karen was born yeah was your mother in a relationship at the time no no she was a single mother yeah I also have a brother and he was born in 59 so he was born African but SH gets my brother this is gonna be very challenging obviously if occur to find out that a baby was born after her and that baby was kept we were very poor my mum struggled feeding the keep in me but she wasn't a bad mom at all so would she have been able to conceal a pregnancy I've actually seen the photograph opened she was pregnant in May and you wouldn't know and she always played a council close to a chest quite a secretive person yeah yeah very secretive she didn't see a lot of us though she works in my clubs all the time she was a cocktail bo made what Karen's father worked in pubs and clubs and he worked around the Grafton Street area well Karen with left Sheila friendly she lived literally it's all sweet soy what was your mother called Jean you seen pictures can I see one oh my goodness me what a beautiful woman she's stunning it's so rare for a foundling to see a picture of their mother yes the want the current to know her more because they must have so many questions would you like to see a picture of her oh yes that is your sister she's like me isn't she well okay it's going to be amazing meeting her it is it's gonna be a minute [Music] away from the cameras we've told Karen that we know who her birth mum was and that sadly she's passed away when I came to meet Karen before I never imagined that I would be back so soon with news about her birth mother it might be hard for her to hear some of what I've got to say I'm just really glad that I couldn't tell her about her half-sister Kim who really wants to meet her to tell her all about her birth mother [Music] [Music] thank you I am really sorry but your mama how have you been feeling about that little bit in shock it's very sad no you know I'll never get to meet her but just to be told you've been able to be identify my birth mother it's just unbelievable she was called Jean Jean and she died in 2013 oh gosh recently not that long ago we have all of that information from your half-sister oh gosh she's called Kim goodness me incredible how old is Kim she's four years older than you was she was four in a bit when you were born and she knew nothing about you she thinks the pregnancy was completely hidden she also said that possibly your birth mother may have left you because she was working to keep a roof over their heads already with a four year old no support you know maybe she just couldn't cope hmm we were also told by Kim that she had another child after you about a year later no a little boy so you have a half-brother no and he stayed with your mum there must have been a reason why she couldn't keep me at that time that she kept him it's hard to understand I've actually got a picture of your mum gosh gosh oh my gosh just gorgeous the pictures so clear isn't it it's like she's a real person it's not means that she had a mother you know another did bad pictures somebody poor desperate young I think younger than Jane I mean she looks quite well dressed she looks like she's got makeup on her hair's done and I never expected anything like that I've also got a picture of Kim oh that's your sister lovely couple we've got the same lips cause incredible Kim really wants to tell you all about your birth mother she can't wait to me that's more than I ever ever imagined it's just amazing [Music] while we continue to pursue leads for a group of foundlings one DNA test has led to an extraordinary breakthrough a week after discovering the identity of her birth mother and finding actually has a half-sister Karen has traveled to Manchester to meet her for the first time I never thought that I'd get to meet sister after years of not getting anywhere had I not been given away we would have grown up together and we would have had shared experiences so I'm really looking forward to getting to know her it's very exciting but it's also quite overwhelming I'm excited just want to find out everything about her [Music] I've never had a sister so it's great she's going to find out about our birth mother yeah I hope it brings a lot of comfort the sisters are meeting at a hotel not far from where Karen was left as a baby as a foundling it is key for me to get more understanding about Mariah the life that I've had has been and we thought of the actions of my birth month and if I can get some information about her life but I mean a lot to me [Music] Seifer family can you know though has ever said that to me before I've been amazed we're finding out about him because I didn't have her that clove no normal the family did it quite hard for a chicken you would think to keep it to herself totally she was all for keeping secrets well she was a good mom so I wonder why I was left I mean she was very poor just a single mom and maybe she didn't know how she was going to bring you up as well as me he's doing health you got a brother as well yeah yeah why did you think your mum Alan mum get Alan brother not me we'll never know yeah but I do believe that she would have kept her if the circumstances I've been right have you seen a photograph I don't need some well you know yeah oh my god she always looked beautiful but she can't afford clothes shop on black dress that she wore five nights a week yeah Kim really knew an exact form kind she's been giving me lots information about the birth month Wow come on stop looking at and i felt quite a warm from it some look at her cheeks you got them cheaper I did feel the burn and I wanted to know her better now that's in 1968 just lovely seeing those photos we shared a certain pride about herself incredible finding this out about my birth mother and I was going mere identity unbelief six years of age I'm not knowing anything about my past who I am and now I know my birth dad is my birth mom I can see where I'm coming from it makes me feel complete it's unbelievable our team have been trying to find answers for foundling Ally Lofthouse who was just a few hours old when she was discovered on a doorstep in a block of flats in Grangemouth I was left right there I just find it really difficult to think about it remarkably we found Ali's half-sister on a DNA database the team believed that Ally and her half-sister shared the same mother who sadly has passed away a further DNA test with the half-sisters uncle has confirmed this we reached out to Ally's half-sister she's called Anne she lives in Plymouth and I'm on my way to meet her and grew up with her mom away from the cameras we told her about Ali and her half-brother Ian and that her mother left them both as babies hello Nikki how are you please daddy thanks so much for meeting you what was it like when you heard the news it was a shock they made a bet Ali but then straight afterwards find out of the Ian's as well you know twice and 18 months up I can't get my head round it because when Ali was born I'd be 10 we lived with my Nana my brother and sister and she managed to hide it from everybody so your mum already had three children yeah that's going to be so hard for Ali yeah it is gonna be tough why do you think your mother left Ali quite possibly there was already three of us with two different dads my mum wasn't very maternal towards me so it was hot what was your mom's name me but she was known as Maisy they got a picture over I have what course did your mom's life take she met someone so a mid 70s they got my rate they had my youngest sister and she was ready for family life she totally changed that's gonna be extraordinary for Ali to see this but what's gonna be so great is that you can tell her but your mum and I can't wait to meet her well here she is cuz his resemblance to my mum she's my sister she's your sister [Music] [Music] for years Ally Lofthouse has been searching for her birth mother finally through DNA we've discovered who she was without cameras present we've told Ally this news and that sadly her birth mother passed away in 2007 must be so devastating for Ally so I'm hoping that the news that we found her half-sister Ann might bring has some comfort and the Ann can give her the answer she's looking for [Music] hi Ali how are you freezing which acts come here yes DS you - I'm so sorry that's we couldn't be better news about your nun yeah I have to be honest I'm absolutely devastated I can give you some information about her if she'd like that please oh I would hope very much her name was May oh now we got this information from your half-sister she's called an O and she's ten and a half years older than you oh my goodness Wow Wow there's a big story to tell right your mum was very young when she had your sister - young basic yeah I think so she had your sister then 56 okay then she had another child your brother yeah in 57 right and then she had another girl with another man right even you were 67 mm-hmm in 68 yeah then 10 years later your mum had another girl so there's three four six of us Wow Wow that blows me away that there's three older ones I thought I would have been the first at the time of your birth mother's pregnancy with you nobody knew that she was pregnant my goodness she was a single mum to three kids from two different dads and she feels that your mum just couldn't have kept you right but I feel so strongly for you yeah Oh have you think does she look though have you seen her I have I've got a photo hmm your big sister oh my gosh oh oh she also gave us a photograph of your birth mother oh I'm shaking oh my goodness oh my goodness it's gonna be guys like me the lovely cheeks pinchable cheeks it's a lot it's joy and then sadness that I'm looking at her and she's not here even though I don't hold anything against her at all this is just nuts these two people are my blood they're related to me they are they have my DNA today a week after finding out who her birth mother was Ali has traveled to Grangemouth to meet her half-sister for the first time I am still stunned you know into disbelief that this is actually happening in the fact that my birth mother who died was my worst scenario so it's been complicated in my emotions through Doubilet shinto grieving and then not understand why I'm grieving for somebody that I've never met then all of a sudden I'd be completely not to be elated that I have a sister I'm so looking forward to what she's got to tell me Anne has traveled from Plymouth to meet Ali who's very apprehension there and all the circumstances were horrible but she's my sister and that's exciting obviously she's gonna have lots of questions but her mum the one of the answers to everything the oval tray [Music] really like to find out what my birth mother was like about her life now they can ask and all these questions and is my key the hopefully is going to unlock an awful lot of things [Music] [Music] hello oh don't cry okay [Music] I have a hundred and one questions for you I hope you're ready look gosh I know how I felt last week hmm everything that I'd found out I thought I would be the oldest one they just floored me that feels did you know anything not a thing so so what was what was mom like she was a strong and confident person but she wasn't really maternal towards me right so just so you don't get my now to bring us up yeah Oh mom siblings we're old and Grangemouth just knocked in using that many siblings did she have six of them wow oh wow oh my gosh just sing the names of everybody else [Music] has just seen the name it was just you know that's just oh my goodness oh my goodness my heart hurts with just the emotion of all you can it really is fantastic from an ally walked in the felt there is a connection there it was like I knew her already just looking at your hands you have the same skin it's exactly the same you sit looking for all the similarities yeah but you've not had it before it's nice I feel really happy really really happy they do see somebody that's the same as me and that means a lot not that really does mean a lot I never ever really thought I would be lucky enough to find you [Music] I am looking forward to having a really good walk around and seeing what my birth mother went through there's still lots and lots of questions and lots of answers to find this is the flyer here you were all in one room yeah the home where Anne lived with their birth mum is less than a mile from where Ali was left as a baby I think this as they start is a route she took the night you were born I think she's come across the bridge here because this was just always land so she wouldn't have been seen she wouldn't have been here right I think she's maybe even given birth to you here and then she's followed the power path down the side of the road it's really hard for me to put myself into her head and think how would she have felt putting a newborn baby on a doorstep and I can't I just can't this is what I was left I do feel that my birth mother was a bit of a troubled and possibly tortured soul unless it is number 24 right on the doorstep I don't might be here it makes me feel ill can understand Lana claustrophobic almost tibia foundling means that you have no roots you've no connection but I've got some answers I I know the answers to Who I am the answers to where I came from I have those and that is that's phenomenal [Music] in the past it was impossible for foundlings to discover anything about their birth families but now incredibly through DNA we've helped three of them find their birth parents and for our other foundlings the search goes on everybody should have a right to know who they are that's what I wanna know really the ultimate thing would be to fight my own flesh and blood it would be not be reborn again [Music] for more information about family searches and issues covered in this long-lost family special visit itv.com
