just another on the scholar summer night hip-hip Sally her and playfully flick the larger of my pendulous testicles with a knotted towel jewels guides here which and I wander around London and tell you fascinating facts which you may or may not know about this city and today we're heading up towards months Royal Hill in what I like to call jewels ease suggested a weekend walks we're starting here at a woodland as my Highgate station Isiah Woodman is described as a dog-friendly pom yum this opened up in around 1810 when they first built archway Road archway Road was designed as a kind of bypass because the mail coaches couldn't get up Highgate Hill so they decided to find an easier route around and so this pub has been here ever since [Music] this little house is actually an original house from 1867 behind it is an abandoned train station it's really cool as in 1867 there used to be a railway here was a part the Great Northern Railway went from Finsbury Park up to Barnet and then in 1941 I mean the war came along and everything I think they actually added the underground station so they have intended to build an extension to this to curve around towards Alexandra Palace in the end they just abandoned it last used in 1964 but it's quite cool because you can actually see down to the tunnels and stuff I think it's now a bat sanctuary so you can walk down there if there aren't loads of people smoking pots you can just have a nice little stroll down there amazing they've just lift the whole station abandon light able to fly away this place will forget my name [Music] now look that is how to queue for a bus Alex you being a blasted foreigner at all from Italy you probably don't understand how to QQ this is where Peter Sellers lived wasn't he married to Britt Ekland the James Bond girl I think she's one of my favorite Bond girls or Barbara Barr from Spy Who Loved me she was good she speaks very highly of me as well I understand now one of the benefits of reaching of dizzying heights of 20,000 subscribers is that they award you this kind of mentor and I went into the YouTube space the other day and my mentor who is basically someone about half your age you make you feel really stupid she she said to me look you've got to tell people to subscribe to channel I said I do tell people sure and she said no tell them at the beginning of the film so I am now asking pretty please where the chair on top don't forget to subscribe to the channel because it really helps it doesn't cost anything and if you want to subscribe you just hit this button I think it's a little red subscribe the screen so if you want to be notified every time I upload something hit the bell and then that will notify you but if you don't want to then just hit subscribe and then you know it just makes me look good subscribe isn't a dirty word crevice is a dirty word but subscribe isn't seriously please it really helps oh now here we are look you see Queens wood now I always just find it really creepy walking down here when I was young it used to be a part of the forest of Middlesex which at one point covered the whole of London there's a bit down the end there which was known as churchyard bottom churchyard bottom there bottoms are positively disgusting word a cute little cafe over there looks lovely so I canceled and Gretel's house somewhere down there there's a steep Bank and it's where they used to bury the victims of the plague to plague pit but people wishing to practice witchcraft would meet at the Woodman and then they'd come down here to where there are 13 oak trees so if you come down here on Halloween it's pretty spooky you've got loads of people down there practicing various witchcraft and stuff like that it's quite apt there's a frog pond here I have Newt and toe of frog wool of bat and tongue of dog you've got bats here as well no wonder which is hang around here for a charm of powerful trouble like a hell boss l brought over a hundred different species of spider as well it does sound like the kind of place witches would hang out isn't it tell me that before asking me to film you yeah well I haven't seen any spiders I see now that over there I think is it how now you secret black and midnight hags what is to do yes so these are all these oak tree because there's 13 of them apparently if you count them in a circle it looks like people have been doing strange witchcraft here doesn't it yeah no apologies to anybody was offended by me generally mucking around here because Barrett there are genuine pagan rituals and stuff that take place here and people who do practice sorts of stuff that I don't understand so no offense intended see fat wasn't spooky enough for you a little further up Muswell Hill Road here at cranly Gardens is the venue of another rather macabre incident 23d that little flat up at the top that's is where Dennis Nilsen one of Britain's most notorious serial killers killed about 12 homeless gay men I think it's around 12 in October of 1981 the neighbors smelt something funny and they reported it to the police it turned out you've been shot chopping up their dead bodies and flushing them down the toilet and burying them in the garden ask me you have to chop it up he used to meet them down at the Royal Oaks he called the Royal oh the olds Royal Oak or something out at the bottom that's Herman and he'd lure them back to his his flat now which which looks all very well to do and everything but the inside apparently was really squalid and disgusting from the police photographs they had a real problem selling it obviously and in the estate agents notes it it did say viewers are advised strongly to research the history of this property before viewing you know is this described as having killer views apparently [Music] this is really long food place is called the parkland walk just stuff for cranly Gardens now this was part of the intended route for the the old abandoned railway from Highgate station they were going to swing it around here and this was supposed to lead up towards Alexandra Palace very popular with dog walkers and butterflies and that bridge over there actually that is the first place I ever went out in the evening for a party when I was a teenager were you there Laura me and Joe Jenkins and Oliver colons I just sat there wondering what on earth was going on a few people have brought something called alcohol rather cheap white why is it fortified wine flavor yeah it's something that kids always take to parties to get drunk on house mentioned my injury in his song on new boots and panties let me mourn your decline with some Thunderbird wine and white handkerchief whilst were on the topic madness mentioned Muswell Hill in their song I like driving in my car I Drive up to myself Hill I've even been to sell Seville I Drive in it for my job the governor calls me a slob we used to sing I've been driving in your mom mountain that was like cussing your friends at school your mum got wet so they hung out to dry by Rebecca's veins I went to Kentucky Fried Chicken and I asked for two legs and a breasts and they threw your mom in a bargain bucket the news to have those mum cusses in school [Music] give me another smile before when I could show you my star shining anywhere you say there is no child carries me now at the top of this hill is Alexandra Palace Alexander Bala this is your palace it was actually princess Alessandra who was married to the Prince of Wales at the time he went on to become King Edward the seventh built in 1873 as a kind of rival to the Crystal Palace down in South London and apparently when they first built it they had to knock down an old crone whose cottage Shack that she was living in and she decided to curse them she said I curse you and your Alexandra Palace to burn down for ice and indeed it did in fact burn twice in 1936 became home the world's first ever regular public TV broadcasting service for the BBC actually that's what that big masters over there is still in use they are the idea of the palace it was sort of a venue for events and stuff like that and you can still come to see the darts and the snooker and it's a double whiskey and vodka do you know what happened on April the 18th 1930 nothing happened people who tuned in for their regular news broadcast that evening were just greeted by the words today there is no news so we'll play some music [Music] they literally cool oh and down there by the way there is one of the most challenging pitch and putt golf courses it's like on the side of a hill oh if you get the shot slightly wrong it just trickles off and buggers off mild out there really challenging but I always beat my friend Ralph there and you'll notice around Muswell Hill there's loads of post boxes my new obsession which you've got King Edward the seventh on them muscle Hill has been described as the perfect example of an Edwardian suburb because Alexandra Palace was named after princess Alexander who was married to Edward 7 I like the way it all links together you see that's that that's oh come on there actually it was voted one of the top five most desirable areas to live in in London this by the way if if you do happen to be in London or in the United Kingdom and you see an interesting term post box with a monarch on it why not take a photograph of yourself there and put it on Instagram remembering to tag jewels guides and you will receive from jewels guides our very best wishes it's quite there's this sort of leak here which looks like a gushing spring in the 12th century a newly formed order of nuns were granted land here by the Bishop of London I think and they built a church quite close to this swell which was said to have magical healing properties even King Malcolm the fourth of Scotland though I think you see the one in Macbeth there's definitely a Malcolm in Macbeth isn't there no he came up here and he was miraculously cured so people would come from far and wide to come to what was known as the mossy well and that's where they get the word muzzle from so corruption of mossy well which is why that pub over there it's called the mossy well I suppose there's not so much demand for churches these days like they've turned this one into a steakhouse I remembered it was a pub before that at the end of muscle Hill Broadway near the church is tops fish and chip shops post to be the best in London or at least it used to be now this everyman here every man's cinema used to be the Odeon and it's a really beautiful art deco 1930s I think buildings listed building and seeing ghosts [Music] look at that just opposite the cliffs hold on sir number six Denmark Terrace where ray Davis from The Kinks lived with his brother at his parents 30 young room then must you keep one of the finest English rock bands of all time and this is where they performed their first ever live gig I think they've got here the Kings had an album called the Muswell Hill billies as well didn't they and as well as the kinks living here Norman Stanley Fletcher from porridge Ronnie Barker from the TV comedy porridge you wouldn't know anyway he lived in Moscow and and also I promised my friend I'd mention Fairport Convention I don't know who they are but apparently they're a massively successful English folk group who launched the English folk scene anyway they are there from muslin as well but if you enjoy my films then please don't forget to subscribe hit the little button there and you can hit the bell also next to it if you want to be notified every time I upload a film and if you want to privates guided tour of London you can get in touch on my website Jules guides calm or if you want to hear from me he
