hello everybody happy friday how is everybody doing i just want to thank y'all so much for hanging out with me today today we are making a tiny little log cabin look at that isn't that so cute two different ways one is with a self binding using the back as the binding on the front and one is without a binding at all so you really have your choice of which one you want to do there is a free one page pdf down in the description box it looks just like this it has your template and the things you need to make this coaster no instructions i'm going to walk you through and today's live thank you so much for joining me today if you are watching on the replay and you're someone who's like oh another live feel free to skip around to the good parts you can absolutely do that hello everybody i want to thank my moderators today thank you maureen thank you vicky thank you for keeping an eye on the chat we're going to go ahead and get ready to get started y'all this coaster measures five inches by five inches when you're done this one's a little bit bigger the one with the self binding like five and a quarter by five and a quarter we're going to go through all the steps we are doing paper piecing today paper piecing if you have not done paper piecing before i strongly encourage you to give it a try my honest opinion on paper piecing is that it is confusing the first couple times you try it right not unlike many other things that we do right it is a little confusing the first couple of times you try it but then once it clicks and you get it you get it and you're like holy cow this is so cool and it gives me perfect piecing even with these tiny little pieces y'all that's pretty small piecing paper piecing makes it so much easier so that's what we're doing today i'm going to switch it over to the cutting mat and we're going to take a look at the things you need to make this coaster okay uh let's see i'm going to be using an elmer's glue stick i'm using the clear one that is my preferred glue stick you can use any glue stick a pair of scissors a rotary cutter you need a ruler uh the square rulers will work fine today i'm using my add a quarter plus ruler and uh it has a little edge that adds your perfect quarter inch and it's very very helpful when doing paper piecing okay then you need a piece of batting that's five and a quarter by five and a quarter i have a piece of warm and natural batting your backing fabric if you're gonna do the coaster with the binding and you're using the back as the binding it needs to be cut at six and three quarters by six and three quarters and then if you're gonna do it without the binding you're gonna cut your backing the same five and a quarter by five and a quarter as you're batting hello everybody yay beverly you finally caught me live and then we need some fabrics y'all we need some fabrics we're gonna use a piece right in the middle and i cut mine at two and a half by two and a half this is actually one of the mini charms that i have sitting in a basket for my cathedral window i just grabbed one of those so two and a half by two and a half that's for the very middle piece and then you need some strips of fabric right i thought the easiest strip of fabric to work with would be two inches wide and about 12 inches long now the pieces that i already had cut were not quite 12 and a half inches so for my outer pieces i have two strips because they weren't quite long enough now you can make all of your pieces different uh different fabrics i'm going to repeat fabrics for uh in my placement but all of these could be all different if you wanted to and i did divide them up between light and dark but y'all there are new rules right there are no rules and let's take a look at this template because we have a little bit of work to do before we get started today this is the one page pdf it has what i just went over all the fabric requirements at the bottom and then your template at the top and we're going to go ahead and cut this template out right on the line when you are printing this page make sure to choose actual size in your print settings so you can just cut the bottom off and save that right make sure to choose actual size in your print settings and then carefully as straight as possible cut out on this outside line which is hard to do when you have shaky hands like i do gonna go nice and slow [Laughter] you'll see each one of these little pieces has a number [Music] that's the order in which we're attaching all of our pieces today and they also have an l or a d and that's just going to help us keep track if we're adding a light piece or a dark piece so before i even get started i like to go through and pre-fold each one of these lines which is going to take me a second uh if you don't have an add a quarter plus ruler you can use a thin piece of cardboard like you could cut a cereal box nice and straight you could uh use an insert from a fat quarter you know when you buy fat quarters some of them have that little cardboard template you could use that that's usually a nice straight edge that's pretty thin we're going to go through and we're going to fold each one of these lines and that's going to take me a second so we're going to get started i like to fold my paper template up so that uh when we're working with this template the paper is actually folding up and i just go through and fold each one out on the line who is ready for some turkey and some stuffing we are gearing up here at our house for thanksgiving i've done some pre-shopping which is not like me at all [Laughter] but i've gotten almost everything i need to make the things that i usually make for thanksgiving what kind of things are you known for like when it's time to have a big family meal what are the things that you usually bring to thanksgiving so each one of those is pre-folded we're going to go to the next side and do the same thing let's see i usually make the green bean casserole which uh i think you either love or you hate green bean casserole i love it green bean casserole i make cheesy potatoes uh and stuffing those are my staples ooh deviled eggs my daughter usually makes the deviled eggs anitra said i bring my appetite for thanksgiving all right so that's two sides the thing about this so the setup for getting ready to do this project takes out a minute right you don't really necessarily have to be fussy over cutting your strips of fabric but pre-folding all of these lines takes a minute the good thing is you don't have to do it every time you want to make one of these you can reuse this paper template until it falls apart and you have to print a new one i think the important thing is is to make sure that you're folding in a nice straight line oh look at all this food going by i'm glad i ate a sandwich before we started or else i'd be starving all right we have one more side to do oh sweet potato casserole that sounds delicious do you like corn pudding my nana used to make corn pudding i miss that so much maybe i should make one of those because i have her recipe all right we have one more line to fold so this is the prep work to get this template ready so everything's been pre-folded right all of the lines you can kind of see that on the back the lighting is going to show that for once thank you lighting see that and we're gonna heat up an iron now you could certainly print this on freezer paper and uh that would work great if you'd rather use freezer paper as your templates but today i'm going to be using a glue stick we're going to be drying the glue with an iron no wet glue is going to the sewing machine so you don't have to worry about that and we're going to scoot this over a little bit ooh joyce remind me remind me over on facebook to get the recipe i'll share it on the creative crew but you have to remind me because by the time we're done with the live i will have forgotten oh cheese balls sorry that sounds delicious all right y'all we're going to be going back and forth to the sewing machine a cutting pressing sewing machine cutting pressing i'm going to show you full screen a couple of times and then i'm going to bring up the sewing machine and the cutting on the same screen so we don't have to keep going back and forth who is sewing is anybody sewing with me live today or are you just watching and gonna make this later i kind of want to know if you're sewing with me live that way i will slow down a little bit ah celeste thank you for joining us today we will be thinking of you for sure just watching just watching only watching okay the majority of everybody's just watching so i'm going to be moving back and forth back and forth and y'all come back on the replay if you need to revisit right and if you're watching this on the replay as your first time then you can pause it and you know go back and forth or skip around we're going to start with our paper template and our two and a half by two and a half inch square okay we're going to flip this paper template right side down and right in the middle you'll see the little folds it'll show you where to put the glue we're not using a lot of glue just a little smidgen of glue because we want this paper to come off relatively simple at the end little smudge of glue right in the center and then we're just going to center our two and a half inch square over top of position number one so that we have fabric extending beyond all of those fold lines right so just really centered right in the middle of the template and we're going to dry that glue see that so now we can move this paper template around and our fabric's not going to fall off so here comes the fun part we're going to be doing lots of folding cutting sewing pressing and repeating okay now that we have our first fabric piece on we're going to fold on the first line between position one and position two and this is why i like to fold my template up so that it just folds right out of the way see that then you're going to either use a ruler and line it up to a quarter inch like this and trim that off so you can most certainly use a ruler for me and my shaky hands i find it very very helpful to have this add a quarter ruler because the little lip is going to catch that paper fold and it doesn't move around so much we're gonna trim this first fabric to a quarter of an inch so there's our first cut now uh position two has an l in it so that means the first fabric we're gonna add is a light fabric so i'm gonna bring over my first light fabric and i like to just pre-trim my piece so i'm not working with this whole long piece which is kind of awkward i like to pre-cut it a little bit larger than this fabric that's already on our template and i'm going to be repeating my fabric so i'm going to set that off to the side for a second i just cut my finger now the first fabric we added was pretty side up the rest of the fabrics that we're adding we're going to be placing the pretty sides together that's why you have to be careful with the rotary cutters oh heard like a paper cut so we're going to be matching the raw edges just like this and we're going to pick these pieces up just like that goodness we're gonna bring this over to the sewing machine and we're gonna sew right next to that paper fold okay uh if it's helpful for you you can add some binding clips some pins i just hold everything with my fingers and so i don't get any blood on my fabrics we're going to give it a second then we said remembering to put that first one pretty side up is always the challenge when doing a whole yes go get a band-aid i have a band-aid somewhere hold on a second y'all yay thank you that's not even uh that's an old blade too those things are still sharp hmm that's still sharp there we go that's why i have band-aids close by thanks for the reminder okay so we have piece number two match up that raw edge and pick everything up keeping those raw edges nice and lined up see that and we're gonna head on over to the sewing machine now i have my open toe foot on so that you can see really good okay and i usually do that for video purposes you don't necessarily have to use an open toe foot you could use your standard sewn sewing machine foot the important thing is we don't have to set an exact quarter inch uh so that's awesome with paper piecing because we're going to be nesting the needle right next to that paper fold that's going to automatically give us our quarter inch seam allowance right so i just put my paper fold right next to the needle and we're not actually sewing on the paper we're sewing right next to it and i just sew from one end all the way to the other so there's piece number two now before i even move any further there's my piece number two has been added i like to add a little smidgen of glue right where position number two goes it's not a lot it's just a tiny bit and then we can open that paper up nice and flat and push over fabric number two i like to give it a good little finger press first and then we're pressing with our iron what size needle am i using i'm using an 80 20 universal smith's universal needle that's my go-to needle for most projects all right so that's pressed i'm going to let it cool off for just a second now you notice piece number two is way bigger than it needs to be right so we're gonna flip it back over and we're going to fold over right back on that line i got the glue a little bit beyond piece number two of course i did there we go and i'm going to go ahead and whoops piece number two lisa not piece number one and i'm going to go ahead and trim off all of the extra and then we're gonna look at piece number three that's gonna be a light piece we're gonna go ahead and fold over on that line and trim anything that extends beyond that quarter of an inch right so we're doing two cuts and then i like to pre-cut my piece again this time hopefully not cutting myself there we go and here's piece number three we're gonna match up the raw edge with that raw edge and bring that over to the sewing machine charlie said did you get a new iron actually this is the iron that's been in my camper we accidentally brought it home the last time and uh i found it a lot more helpful for these tiny little pieces and when i'm doing the cathedral window quilt blocks uh it's a lot lighter than my big iron so i've just been using it but it really needs to go back to the camper that's where it's supposed to be all right we're going to be sewing this seam here again i just line that paper edge right up right up next to that needle and we're sewing from edge to edge whoops i'm make sure you don't finagle your fabrics make sure they're nice and lined up on that raw edge finagle all right now because i think you kind of get the idea and we're going to be switching back and forth a lot i'm going to see if this works hopefully this works again before i do any pressing i'm going to add a little smidgen of glue then we can open up here we go open up the fabric and do a finger press i'm not really stretching that fabric i'm just just finger pressing it over so there's piece number three so let's trim off the extra of piece number three i sewed it on the wrong side y'all ever have a feeling it's going to be one of those days i'm having a feeling it's going to be one of those days i sewed it in the wrong place you know what that's the beauty of using the glue it just comes right off i'm gonna find a new piece number one i'm gonna get a new strip of fabric and we're gonna start over and this time i'm gonna pay attention lisa all right i'll move a little bit quicker see the beauty of it is you can reuse these templates first fabric pretty side up [Music] fold in between one and two and trim bring in piece number two pretty side facing up line up those raw edges and sew that seam trim trim add a little glue smells like deja vu there we go fold over piece number two finger press and press the stitch length i'm using right now is a 2.4 but i really recommend using like a 2.2 i just moved it back down to 2.2 cheryl said what not to do [Laughter] yes all right focus lisa piece number two we're gonna fold back on the line we're gonna trim this extra fabric off from piece number two and then we're gonna look at adding a piece number three so that's where i messed up i was folding on this line here we need to fold between one and two that line up there pay attention lisa there we go we're going to be cutting off everything that extends past a quarter of a yard right a quarter of an inch i'm having i'm struggling today we're going to cut off a piece of this strip and we're going to match up those raw edges and bring that to the sewing machine did you say your needle size is smith's 80 20 80 12. i might have said 80 20 i meant 80 12. are you using a single whole face plate no this is just a regular face plate on my jukey hzl f600 i'll show you the needle i'm using it is the smith's universal 80-12 that's my go-to needle we're sewing edge to edge before we flip it i'm going to add just a smidgen of glue to position number three all right that's much better we're back to where we left off what weight is my thread i believe this is a 60 weight i could be wrong debbie it is the ak trading company thread did i like to use i believe it is a 60 it could be a 40. it doesn't say on the spool or else i would look we're going to flip back position number three and trim off that extra and now we're going to look at position number four which has a d and so we're going to bring in our first dark fabric for today's coaster dark fabric we're going to fold on the line between the one and three and the four that line right there we're folding on that first line let's trim away all of the extra and we're trimming this fabric we're going to match up those raw edges marion yes i am using the jukey hzl f600 it does have a little button that you just push it and it sets your quarter inch seam allowance one of the reasons i like this paper piecing is because you don't have to worry so much about the accurate quarter inch seam allowance as we are uh doing that as we are making our piece right we're gonna finger press piece number four and then give that a good press [Music] and we're going to trim up piece number four leaving that quarter inch and then we're gonna fold over piece number five so the first fold is right here this first line on that side we're going to go ahead and trim away everything that goes beyond it and we're bringing over fabric number five and i just like to pre-trim it pretty side facing up match up those raw edges and we're sewing remember we're lining this paper fold right next to our needle not sewing through the paper so that seam smidge and a glue not a lot just a smidgen and we're going to flip this fabric over and press it what i really love about doing the paper piecing also is that it gives you almost exactly perfect piecing even working with what looks like smaller pieces right two inch strips are fairly easy to work with but when they're finished after we've trimmed everything after we've sewn right it looks like we have worked with these tiny tiny pieces we're going to trim this so when we trim we're not re-folding on that first line we're going to fold beyond position number five right so it's that next line we're folding over and trimming and then we're gonna look at piece number six piece number six has an l in it so we're bringing over our next light fabric we're gonna fold it over and trim first there's lots of flipping sewings pressing trimming flipping and sewing trimming pressing we're gonna match up those raw edges and sew on piece number six we're gonna add our glue we're going to flip that over and press then we're going to trim off the fabric from piece number six so again when we're folding we're going to leave piece number six down flat and fold up on the line right above it and then we're gonna look at adding piece number seven so let's trim off these fabrics and piece number seven is a light fabric so we're bringing that back over and i'm gonna trim mine a little bit matching up those raw edges [Music] so in right next to that paper fold add our glue flip it over finger press and press and right about now you can start to see the little step effect of your piecing this is usually when i start getting pretty excited you can start seeing all the different steps starting to take place we're going to trim piece number seven and now we're down here at the bottom piece number eight and that is a dark piece so we're going to bring over the dark piece we're going to fold on the line between 4 and 8 to trim away anything that's hanging off beyond a quarter of an inch and then i'm going to trim my piece just a little bit so it would be really helpful if you can set up your work area where you're sewing trimming pressing trimming sewing and everything you don't have to get up because with this with this little log cabin block you're going to be doing lots of back and forth lots of back and forth the awesome thing is they're really smaller seams so it's not like you're spending a lot of time doing any of these steps right we're going to flip that back and give that a press trinita we did a log cabin block in the christmas quilt we did uh however that log cabin didn't have quite as many pieces as this one does and it was a much bigger block right so we're adding piece number eight we're gonna leave that flat and fold up between eight and 12. that block also was not paper pieced so it was just regular piecing we're adding a piece number nine so we're going to fold between five and nine and trim that extra and i'm going to trim this piece just a smidgen like that see we're coming right along even after having to start all over again a little bit of glue i guess i could scoot this over a little bit there we go we're gonna press that linda the reason i love doing it this way is because you really only have to prepare the template one time right we're not sewing through it and tearing it off and to be really honest tearing off all these little tiny pieces at the end would be something that would stop me from doing this project so we won't have to do that at the end so we just added piece number nine we're gonna fold on the line between nine and thirteen leaving piece number nine nice and flat on the cutting table and we're trimming piece number 10 is a light piece you're going to have all these little pieces all over the place unless you were a much tidier sewer than i am piece number 10 is a light piece we're going to go ahead and fold between six and ten and trim off any extra that's hanging off there and i'm going to trim this piece up just a little bit what size is my ruler this is the six inch at a quarter plus i have the a bigger one this is not the plus this is just add the quart at a quarter this one is a 12 inch add a quarter one of the reasons i like the outer corner plus is it has a beveled edge which in the beginning when i was folding all the little positions uh that beveled edge is perfect for that this one is just the blunt edge and so you actually need like a thin template or something to make your folds i did put a link in the description box if you want to check it out it's like ten dollars i think something like that so there's piece number ten we're coming right along add a little bit of glue and fold over piece number ten okay doke we're going to trim off piece number 10. we're going to leave piece number 10 flat we're going to fold on the line in between 10 and 14 and trim that off and then we're adding piece number 11 which is also a light piece we're going to fold on the line between 7 and 11. trim off that extra and then bring in the fabric for number eleven i like my next fabric to be longer than what was previously added by just a little bit right we do end up trimming that off eventually but i like it to be a little bit bigger i know it is very well possible that you've asked questions and i've missed them it's because i don't want to mess up and then have to start all over again somebody asked what are my snips those are havel snips you can find those on amazon or a lot of local quilt shops have them too havels 33010 snips we're going to flip that fabric over and give it a press and then we're gonna trim off of that extra so we're leaving piece number 11 flat on the board and we're folding up piece number 15. thank you dory for sharing that link alright and so 11 12. we're down here at the bottom that's a dark piece we're going to fold between 8 and 12 and trim off these extra bits i'll tell you i did paper piecing for years without this kind of ruler but i really like it because it catches that paper fold and uh it makes my life a lot easier most of the time my hands are pretty shaky so it just kind of catches that paper fold however you don't have to have that ruler i did it for years with a regular ruler all right we're adding a little bit of glue folding over and pressing cheryl says she's got to have all the correct tools to do it right i'll tell you uh you can do this with very very basic tools regular ruler rotary blade this does that tool actually speeds up and helps my production so um i think the world of invention when it comes to gadgets for quilting and sewing in general a lot of the gadgets we have are not absolutely necessary but do increase in our accuracy and productivity right speeding up the process but getting more accurate results so that was 12 we're adding 13. so we're going to fold on the line between 9 and 13. we're going to fold 13 up and we're trimming off those bits see look how dull my ruler is but it was still sharp enough to cut my finger pretty good all right i'm not even going to trim that one we're going to add it right like that now as you work your way towards the edge of this template you will come to a point where you cannot exactly butt the paper edge up to your needle before you start sewing right so you just kind of have to eyeball it i'm just eyeballing the needle placement so that when it gets to the template it's sewing next to the template if you sew a little bit onto the paper that's okay a little bit of glue flip it and press it all those fabrics are so pretty all right we're going to trim off that extra we're going to leave position 13 right flat and we're going to fold up piece number 17. piece number fourteen we're coming along at the edges now right we're going to fold between 10 and 14 and we're going to trim off the extra bits piece number 14 has an l in it so it is a light fabric i'm going to pre-trim mine and we're just going to center it right on there and sew that one cheryl said my friend said that you waste thread when you use leaders and enders that's interesting i tend to save a lot of thread when i use mine because when i pull away i'm pulling away a lot more than this amount i'm usually pulling it off to the side to trim but we're all different i know one thing if i was pulling all the way up here to use my cutters on the side i would be pulling off about a good four inches another reason why i like to use leaders and enders is because when i first start sewing my seam i don't have to worry about my thread coming out of my needle if i cut it too short and i don't have to worry about it jamming and pulling down the fabric into the needle plate right but we're all different i know lots of people don't use them i'm just one who does a little bit of glue fold it over thank you carol thank you so much let that cool off for a second now comes a time when we're working along the edge we're going to do things a little bit differently right we want to add a quarter inch seam all the way around our template that's going to be either in the binding right that's going to give us a place for our binding to go without completely covering up all of these pieces along the edge so we're still going to add the quarter inch beyond our paper template even for these edge pieces and if you're not doing the binding if you're going to do your coaster like this without a binding you still want to have that seam allowance added so that when you sew you know the right sides together before flipping it you're not completely getting rid of all of these positions along the edge so we are going to at this point that's not too much of an edge for that other ruler to grab so i like to just bring in this one line up the paper edge to the quarter inch on the ruler and we're going to trim beyond the paper template itself giving us that quarter inch and that's how we're going to do the positions along the edge so that was fourteen here's number fifteen let's get rid of all of the extra here cut cut [Laughter] and what fabric was i using for that here we go all right this is going to be piece number 15. we only have two more pieces to finish adding after this i just like to center it right on that strip that way i don't have to worry about cutting it close on either side add a smidgen of glue flip and press i was going to ask y'all which one which way do you want me to finish wanda says she likes the look of the binding gloria said she likes the look of the binding i have the fabric i can do it with the binding or without without as much faster it's friday and we can hang out as long as you want so what do y'all say should we finish it with the binding or without the binding all right so we can trim off the extra binding binding binding okay we'll do the binding we're going to leave quarter of an inch like that we can square this up too as we go along because we're going to have these little pokies off the edge all right we're adding piece number 16 that's a dark piece we're going to fold back piece number 16. we're going to trim off these extra bits and our fabrics for the last two i have all these little snippets everywhere these are my dark fabrics for this one so let's trim this one we're adding a piece number 16. cheryl said you asked and we you sure did you sure did not rather do it the way you want to see it done anyway so even if it takes longer it's probably better that we do the one with the binding anyway because on this project i made the binding a little bit smaller than what i usually do in my patterns i don't know if you've noticed that or not but that's a little bit of a thinner binding so it'll be good that we're doing that together angela i hope you do try it you can scoot this over a little bit more i'm not going to lie the first couple times you try it it might be a little confusing but once you get it like once it clicks i think you're gonna love it i mean look at the perfect piecing it's perfect piecing little pieces once you get it i think you're gonna really like it again we're trimming and leaving a quarter of an inch beyond the paper template and we can go ahead and trim off this little snippet here and just square up this corner and piece number 17. this is our last piece it's a dark piece we're going to flip up piece number 17. we're going to trim off these little extra bits and we're bringing in piece number 17. yes i'm going to add batting to mind now line up those raw edges a little bit better there we go lisa and that is our last scene our last piece added to the front one last little smidgen of glue we're going to fold back piece number 17. and we're gonna give it a press now i feel like i could take the sewing machine off the screen for a little bit there you go you can see more isn't that pretty we're going to trim off the extra squaring this up one final time and we have the little bits on the ends here i'm just going to take those off all right y'all here's all of our pieces added isn't that gorgeous perfect little piecing and if you haven't used two terrible much of glue you can most of the time just gently tug on this paper and it should release you might have some threads and some glue maybe even some paper pieces left on the back of your piece but that's okay and i would keep reusing this template until it falls apart and then i'd print off another one right so this is ready to go for the next one and here is our top you might want to give it one more quick little press pulling it off from the paper might make it a little a little messy yes you could make this into a christmas ornament right you could add a little hanger uh you could make this into a pin cushion how gorgeous would that be that would be amazing all right so for the back [Music] i have a piece of worm and natural batting it is very very thin uh you could use an 80 20 you could double up on your batting uh but yeah my preferred batting right at this moment in the last couple of months has been the warm and natural and then our backing so if you're not going to do the binding you really only need your backing to be as big as your top which is about five and a quarter right we're doing the finding so we're going to center our batting right in the middle and this is cut at six and three quarters by six and three quarters i'm just going to do an eyeball placement y'all of this batting but you could get really precise and measure it all the way around if you want to i'm just going to eyeball it do you ever use freezer paper i do anitra uh i think one of my first videos or a very earlier video was the vintage heart mug rug i think i did that with freezer paper i just added a little bit of glue stick we're gonna baste our top right on top of the batting like so and i'm gonna dry that how do you keep warm and natural batting from shifting while sewing other than pinning a lot i glue based i'm a glue baster it does not shift at all at least not for me when i glue baste if you're basting a large quilt you might want to try spate spray basting i'm gonna let that cool off for a second and actually you know what let's clear all of this off so i can just move this whole pressing board right in front of me i have all these little snippets those can go off to the side usually when i'm doing a self binding meaning i'm using the bag over on the front as the binding i usually like to have like a good inch all the way around right and that usually gives me a decent size little binding however this is a much smaller project even smaller than a lot of the mug rugs that we make right and if we used a full inch beyond our project as our binding i believe it would come up too far into these last positions and really throw the look off a little bit right so we're making this binding a little bit smaller it just means it's a little bit more tedious to do all right you know me i'm going to be using my glue stick i'm just adding some glue right in there and folding the first time that extra right in half and drying that glue now i used black fabric so i know that's going to be really hard to see i'm sorry we're adding glue again to what's left over there and this time we're folding it up onto our coaster see the smaller binding doesn't quite cover up that last position all right so there's the first side the second side we're going to fold in this first corner just it's going to look like a little 90 degree angle right there and then we're folding it in half i'm going to tell you what that little iron gets hot as mess it is hot i think it's hotter than my regular iron i even burnt my finger with it see the red mark right there yesterday i did that so i feel like i've been really clumsy the last couple days anybody else like i'll go a really long time without cutting myself or burning myself or tripping or anything and then all of a sudden like everything i do i'm hurting myself we're folding that again right onto the top of our coaster i apologize for using a black fabric so it kind of just really blends in there i'm sorry i wanted it to match my other one i didn't quite use enough glue see how that's popping up that's okay i'm gonna hold it down in place add a little bit of glue to the corner fold that corner in and press we're gluing and folding in half this is the same method we have done many times together for mug rug projects only it's just a little bit smaller that's all yes if you have a stylus or a little orange stick uh that would be really helpful to help not burn your little fingertips all right and we're on the last side we're going to let that cool off for a second thank you thank you karen all right this side we have to fold in both of these corners right see how they're both coming straight down we're going to fold them both in and i like it so that my fold just comes to the edge of my project just up against that edge i tend to get neater mitered corners doing it that way yes aren't those colors so pretty they really are all right so our last side we're gonna glue and fold in half just like the other sides thank you miss betty thank you for hanging out with me today and then we're gluing one last time this is our fourth side and we're folding that binding right over top and i like to work in sections so i get that first corner positioned just right and then i work myself right across timmy sue asked do you find that one type of glue stick works better than the other i'm going to be really honest i've always stuck with the elmer's glue stick now i have switched around from different kinds of elmer's glue sticks right sometimes i have fabrics that are a little hard to work with so i use this extreme one this one is a super strong hold probably not great for using paper piecing if you want to remove the paper template like we did in today's project right but if you're working with a binding that the fabrics are a little difficult to work with this works so good and it washes out and then uh for a long time i used the purple one the elmer's school glue stick that was purple and dries clear however sometimes i found that it always didn't dry clear and if i used a lighter fabric i could see purple come through that did not fade away although it did wash out of my projects when i washed it this is my go-to glue stick i know that people get them from the dollar tree not elmer's and they work just the same so you know trying out different ones it's not a bad idea oh debbie see devi said the dollar store glued stick really doesn't work it's fine for card making but not fabric see i haven't tried it so that's good to know here's the thing i bought a great big box off of amazon and i think there were 30 glue sticks i'm on my second year of that box and i use glue sticks almost on a daily basis you all know me if i'm showing a project we're using a glue stick i'm still working on that box of 30. i have maybe eight left and it was very very cheap all right i think that's cooled down enough let me hold it up close so that you can see so that one corner is popping up that's okay we'll sew it down so there's my binding so at this point we definitely want to sew down the binding at least do that and then the quilting options are really up to you right let me bring that in and let me just show you what i did for a quilting i did a stitch in the ditch right stitch in the ditch and uh this one i hand sewed the opening closed so i don't have a line of stitching in the outside right and i used a lighter thread which i don't prefer because if you mess up you can kind of see it i'd rather it be so that if you mess up you don't see it so that's the quilting that i did on this particular one from the front is gorgeous and then i switched over to a black thread for quilting i did the same stitch in the ditch on this one but on the back you don't see any of it see that you can feel the quiltiness in person i can see it but you can't see the thread right so that's some ideas if you want to quilt it i definitely think uh you know you could just sew down your binding and be done it's a smaller project but if you really want that quilty look you can go in there and do really any kind of quilting i might today just quilt right around that center center piece so now we're just going to sew down this binding here's the side that was flipping up i know you can't hardly see that but i'm just going to hold it down with my fingers and we started right here back stitch just a little bit see how far i pull away that's why my leaders and ninjas end up saving me so much thread because i would end up cutting off at least four to five inches every time i'm going to snip these little threads and then i'm going to come in and do a little bit of quilting i'm just going to quilt that center position number one just a little box right in the center on this one i think that will be cute you ever feel like your stitches come up a tad bit shorter than where you want them to land this is where we started right here in this corner all right so i think that's all the quilting i'm gonna do on this particular one we'll bring it over and i think maybe in this lighting over here you can see uh the quilting a little bit better let me snip these threads before i hold it up any closer reds threads everywhere i think that's all of them okay you can just see that see the little center square i think that's cute really anchors down those pieces and that's from the front that's so pretty let me see if you can see this other one a little bit better oh yeah there you go with this light it's a little bit better that's why sometimes i like to match up my thread to the backing fabric right because if you make a mistake you don't so much see it as if you use a contrasting thread see [Laughter] that's okay that's going to be on the bottom right people are setting their glasses on top but there we go we did it with the little self binding using the back as the binding let's see i only cut my finger and had to start over from about a quarter of the way in not too bad i need to said i use leaders but then use my thread cutter i would tell you i have a love hate relationship with my thread cutter i do uh sometimes it cuts beautifully and then sometimes it leaves such a tangled mess on my stuff so if i'm doing something at you know like finished quilting or something a line of quilting i've stopped using my thread cutters because it always just seems to leave this little tangled mess yes so i just want to thank you all so much for hanging out with me if you came in like halfway or towards the end you'll have to come back on the replay uh and i'll just give you this last reminder paper piecing if you haven't done it before you might think it's a little confusing you might get frustrated at the beginning but i encourage you not to quit make a couple of these projects before you walk away and say i don't like paper piecing because once you get it you really just kind of get it and uh what it does is it gives you a really perfect piecing and let me just tell you see how small these pieces are i'm gonna tell you i would struggle if i did not do this by paper piecing if i were just cutting thin little strips and trying to piece them together yeah mine would not look like this it surely would not be the square but my seams would not be that straight so yeah accuracy with paper piecing i love it yeah hazel said uh it would make a brilliant christmas present i just want to thank my moderators today too thank you all so much ah scrunchions this one's your favorite with the cream center i think this is a little bit more traditional looking with the red center right but yeah that just kind of pops doesn't it i like going against the normal that's really pretty charlie thank you for hanging out with us today hazel your jukie does that too yeah uh and i go i do when it starts to leave that little jung jumbled up mess i will go in and try to brush out that thread cutter but that doesn't seem to take care of it anitra says i want to do a judy nehemiah quilt yes when i grow up that's one of the quilts i want to do one of her quilts i just don't know that i have the patience it's taken everything i have to keep going on my cathedral uh see the table behind me that's gonna be my ongoing project the cathedral window quilt and it takes a lot of discipline for me to start a larger project one that's going to take time i think her quilt patterns are one that is like a huge commitment investment of time for all of that paper piecing right and i just don't know that i can commit to fully fully finishing one debbie you just woke up i hope you're feeling better nooks and crannies you're going to jump down to the description box okay and that's where it is it's a one-page pdf and it gives you the template and then at the bottom of the page i've already cut the template off this was at the top of the page like that at the bottom is your fabric measurements for the pieces when i said how is your cathedral windows coming along i saw that you're making a table runner uh i have one big block done tonight we're doing a workshop over on patreon so i have the makings of my second block and we're walking through that and once i get like two more of the bigger blocks i'm gonna make a video for here on youtube but i want that video to have some good portions of that quilt together before i make the video but it's it's a process i've been super busy with work so finding time to do that extra stuff has been time for that has been thin in the last two weeks what does your shirt say uh building my legacy julie i'm so glad you're here debbie you're not feeling much better what did the doctor say yeah it's coming along linda it's a process i'm going to tell you it's like anything y'all right so you start off and you're like oh so excited and like you put off work and you put off cleaning and fixing food because you're so into the new project like you lose track of all time and then for the next few days like you can barely stand you can't wait to get back to doing what you were doing and then that excitement just starts to wean off and then it like takes a lot for me to muster up getting back to it right that's the way it is for me like i cannot stand to not do it and then it's like i can't stand to start to do it but the odd thing is once i actually force myself to get back into making those pieces as soon as i'm doing it i'm like oh yeah this is so much fun and then hours go by and i forget to feed harlan and all this stuff until i stop again and then i'll go several days and i'm like oh i gotta work on that cathedral window quilt and i put it off and put it off and then once i start hours go by and it's so much fun it's like it's like this steady cycle that happens with me mary said what is the log cabin on your back wall that's another video i'm i'm working on that's actually that's actually a casserole carrier you should see the quilting on that it is gorgeous you can't see it too much from here it's gorgeous hello in south korea holy cow bye miss sylvia thank you so much for helping moderate today debbie make sure you do it make sure you force yourself to drink lots of liquid and he just said i set alarms that's a good idea because i'm going to tell you once i finally do dive into working on something i lose track of all sense of time except here lately you know with it getting dark earlier as soon as it starts getting darker i'm like oh i should probably stop and think about eating debbie said what brand of long arm do you have i have a noting melting mine is a pro series 24 and i do have the robotics on it and i use quilt magin and that's actually what drives it if i'm not driving then quilt magin is driving it gloria said i must be her long-lost twin we're soul sisters gloria joyce i want to thank you so much for hanging out with me today thank you so much i hope you can join me this evening that would be awesome if not you can catch the replay okay shannon said someone told me to set my alarm for 45 or more or one hour for each project and do the time and when the alarm goes off put it away that takes some discipline because my luck one hour in i would just be really settling into my groove and then have to stop and put it away i think that's one of those things that it probably is probably one of the things you should do but i don't he said mr bobbins makes beautiful quilting yes and he's been busy he has been busy wanda tonight is a patreon uh a workshop over on patreon marion says she has she's working on a quilt right now and she has the same problem when she gets started she loses track and the next thing she knows it's late and she hasn't eaten eating for me is very important i do not take lightly eating so if you know if i skip a meal or two that i'm really into what i'm doing but then i get the low blood sugar and all the other things and then you don't feel well so yeah stopping to eat is pretty important becky said it takes me an hour to get ready to sit down yes [Laughter] crafty ow yeah you got to see the whole thing from the beginning to the end that's awesome i just want to thank you all so much for hanging out with me today today was a little bit of a clumsy video but the good news is i think my finger has stopped bleeding and it only took a minute to start over on our project today so that's awesome linda said i'm adding to the sides of my christmas runner yay wanda said is it possible to pay a year at a time for patreon instead of paying monthly there is an option where i could change it to do that i saw that there's that option maybe i would turn that on if that would be helpful oh susan yeah your our timing is totally different isn't it oh you're welcome debbie all right miss wanda i'll look into doing that because i have seen that option to where you could do it yearly i just didn't know if anybody would be wanting to do that but now that i know that that is an interest then i will look into changing that or adding that as an option we do lots of fun stuff over there we do tonight we're doing a show and tell zoom and then we're doing the cathedral window workshop so the free pattern for patreon this month was the cathedral window pattern let me grab that so you can see it this is it it's been done for quite some time so in the first or at the beginning of the month they got this and it gives out measurements and peace requirements for the mug rug a small wall quilt a table runner a crib size quilt which is also a really nice like elongated wall quilt a throw and a queen i did not do a king size measurements and pieces because i just don't know i don't know how many people would make a queen size one of these things i don't know so six different size projects right and then it goes through diagrams and instructions for all of you know the steps all the steps so we're doing a workshop on that and then like the business group we do small business rallies and workshops all about running crafting small businesses so we have one of those each month and then we're going to do a virtual quilt retreat towards the end of the month so that's kind of fun anitra said i can't download the patterns for some reason anitra i wonder why you're are you using your apple id send me a message over on etsy and i'll email it to you from my end okay i don't want you to go without it if you want to grab it let me scroll back up there we go all right miss dari i'm so sorry to hear about your son-in-law's dad you've been on my mind what was the quilter's name that you want to make when you grow up uh judy nehemiah amazing quilts are cathedral windows hard to learn to do i don't think so shannon uh just like everything else right you know when i was searching because it's always been on my bucket list of quilts to make that i wanted to make um for myself something that i'll pass on to you know the kids one day uh when i was searching how to do it there's about a million different ways to do it just like with anything and so i would try this way and i would try that way and i tried this way and then i just compiled a whole bunch of different techniques into one that really worked for me so it's a little bit of this and a little bit of that and a little bit of this and compiled into the way that i wrote the instructions for the way i'm making mine how do you join join patreon miss linda there is a link in the description box and it'll bring you over to my patreon page and there's four different groups right uh to join the workshops that we do monthly for the show and tells and the virtual quilt retreats and for the free pattern it's the 10 group right if you run a small crafting business you might want to think about the higher groups because we do workshops based on helping uh improve your small crafting businesses marion yes yes as soon as i do the video for that that pattern will be in the etsy shop yes ma'am miss wanda i'd say that there's more than three different ways depends on if you are doing it by machine or by hand all right miss beverly send me an email to lisacapenquiltz gmail.com and i will email it over to you mary said how much would a year of patreon be i think it depends mary on which one of the four tiers you join right i did a five dollar tier for those who want to help support me as an artist in my channel and your name goes in the credits uh that's the five dollars so five times twelve i'm doing the math uh 72 dollars right a year and then it's a ten dollar group a twenty five dollar group and a fifty see one of the things i i really only focused on doing it month to month because if your situation changes you could just cancel right [Laughter] i hadn't thought about doing it for the year is cathedral window square or rectangle okay so it starts off square well it depends on how you put it together right uh [Music] so mine i do groups of four like that and when you put them together it forms this group of four which is square but you could also add to the side and make it rectangle right so i think it's all depends on how you put together your groups like this and then i join four of these together to make a bigger square and so that's how i'm gonna put together mine for my bed quilt i'm gonna do big square chunks at a time and uh that's how i'm gonna do it oh margaret you just got your power back on carol said how long does it take to get a patron pattern from your etsy shop you should get it within just a few minutes carol so if you've ordered a pattern and you haven't gotten it yet go back over to etsy and send me a message more than likely it might have gone to your spam folder or you might not have been signed in to etsy when you purchased and if you have more than one email account this happens a lot if you have more than one email account you might want to just double check which email account you have assigned to your etsy shop because i have a lot of customers who think they've used one email but they're actually using an older email account like they've gotten a new one since they signed up for etsy and they keep checking the new email account but it's gone to the old one and they don't even remember the password anymore that happens a lot but if for whatever reason you know occasionally it does glitch over there if you have ordered something and you didn't get it within just a few minutes send me a message and unless it's late at night i'm usually pretty quick to come back to you and i can just email it from my end and that's not a big deal and said are you long arming it or is it a quilt as you go the cathedral window the awesome thing about that is that once you're done putting together the blocks and everything that's it now you know there's a lot of like faux cathedral windows uh that you can quilt on you know quilt the background and all the fun stuff this one once you do it you're done like there's no batting there's no additional backing fabric that you add to it you make it and it's done oh it's getting warm in here we're like in november and today is is hot no quilting anitra no quilting shannon said did you finish organizing your fabrics i did i wonder is there a way that i could quickly show you without messing you up too much let me see that's the me camera hopefully this doesn't make you too sick i'm going to move you around for a second and just give you a scan of my wall okay so i don't know that y'all have seen it over here pardon my mess look at there look at there it is all folded and organized the little baskets on the bottom those are my scrap baskets and divided up between colors right not the dominant colors my hands are shaky y'all but i did the only thing that is not folded up is like right at the very top and we're going to try not to do a close-up right at the very top is like upholstery fabrics that i use for journal making i still have to do that and then uh right over towards the side in the corner are a couple shirts some of them have been cut apart some of them have not i need to finish deboning them and then i can fold those up that's the only things i haven't done yet i have not uh did i miss the making of the log cabin the coaster yes you're gonna have to come back on the replay to catch that if you're talking about the log cabin behind me i haven't made that video yet i'm not sure which one yeah like the sun coming through here it's hot in here i'm going to tell you i really feel like i've been a lot more productive and i've actually purchased less fabric because i'm going to be really honest when i would go to do a new project it was easier for me to go buy a yard of black fabric than to dig through what i had to find a yard of black fabric do you know what i'm saying it was like it was just too much and i didn't know what i had i'd forgotten a lot of what was in my stash and i was just buying new because it was faster so the last several projects smaller projects i've been able to walk over see what i have pull it out and y'all i've even been disciplined enough that when i'm done i've refold the board and put it back so has stayed that way for a couple weeks now all right y'all i'm sure that uh i've missed some questions early on while we were doing the selling part and if i did i'm really sorry uh thanks for hanging out with me today and uh i hope you have a fantastic weekend i hope your week next week is awesome just to give you a heads up don't like 100 hold me on this but i really really really want to focus next week on doing a project that is great as a gift right these coasters make awesome gifts and believe it or not once you get the process down you can make several of these in one sewing session you can you'll get there next week i really want to make these for my kitchen and i was like this would make a good gift too and the sooner i make these the more i'm going to keep my piece about me i want some quilted uh things that go on the handles of my refrigerator i've been wanting them for a long time one of my pet peeves is stuff on at the hand i want those so i'm going to make some and once i do we're going to figure it out and hopefully that's what we're making next week and if we're not doing that y'all we're just doing a chatty video next week mary that's what i'm gonna i'm gonna open up my windows we have a couple uh cars that when they drive by they make a lot of noise so i don't like them open during the live but soon as we're done they're getting opened all right y'all i do look forward to coming back in the evening time tonight to read all the chat that i missed i hope you have a fantastic weekend oh i hope y'all feel better those of you who are not feeling so great and uh yeah those who needed prayers we're gonna be praying about those things thank you all so much for hanging out with us today bye everybody you
