hello everybody happy friday look we have a guest star today ms sheila many of you uh have talked with sheila in the live chat here on youtube and if you are on creative crew then you know miss sheila because she's been in many of the zooms sheila lives what how long did it take for you to get here 15 minutes 15 minutes away that's how small of a world it is hello everybody 15 minutes away today we're gonna be doing an awesome uh casserole trivet quilt as you go so uh if you haven't already jump down to the description box you can grab the free pattern it prints off just like this and that's what we're making today so stay tuned uh if you're looking for a really really short video uh you can grab this free pattern and then go to the video i published on my youtube channel yesterday because uh even though the top is different the process from start to finish is the same and it goes by pretty quick so if you just want to get busy making this grab this free pattern and then watch the video i posted yesterday hello everybody it's so great to see y'all hello hello can y'all hear me okay i was messing around with my microphone and everything this morning and uh yeah i'm so excited you're here this is going to be so much fun it is thank you for inviting me i'm her place is great y'all so much inspiration we've had fun uh just hanging out she got here about an hour ago and after the live uh if you were here last week in the live chat she offered to help me fold some fabric so that's what we're doing after the live is we're going to have a fabric folding party and i'm super excited about it i did get like a little jump start done but um yes it's a lot of fabric y'all she says it's a lot when i look at it i'm like it's not that much but only because i've seen some of the craft room tour videos and uh so yeah that's what i'm comparing it to but all right everybody are y'all ready to make this cute little uh trivet this is the first one that i made this is made without a binding but you can make a bias binding i made the same trivet with the bias binding and that's what that looks like but in today's version we're doing it nice and easy without a binding and i'm going to walk you through step by step on how to make this it's so great to see all hello everybody okay are you a can you see the comments um oh you know what i can see them on my phone you can pull your phone out and watch oh look i just got a notification you're going live yeah i'm live all right i'm going to switch the camera over y'all so that y'all can see this and i want to show you these earrings that michela made there we go all right okay before we get started y'all sheila surprised me with these earrings when she came over she makes these y'all i said you should open up an etsy shop or something you should do something and sell these aren't they gorgeous i have shaky hands or else i would like hold them up but they'd be like oh you do that aren't they gorgeous oh my goodness apparently i did not know the choices these are the uh trivets that we're making today let me show you this pattern y'all we're gonna walk through the pattern um today i'm gonna use three layers of cotton batting okay but if you want to insulate these even more you can substitute one of the layers the middle layer with insole braid i do think that that would help a little bit but let me just tell you this was the first one i made this was my prototype okay and this is just three layers of cotton batting and i have used this i have used this to pull casseroles out of the oven and i have used this uh if you've ever put corn in the microwave fresh ears of corn just the whole stalk of corn in the microwave three minutes for each stock of corn it cooks it perfectly and you don't have to clean the silky stuff off and i've pulled like 15 ears of corn out with these and the three layers of cotton batting was enough so if you don't want to go by insole bright i don't really think that you have to but if you want that extra security insulation in there you could do that i would suggest using a 100 cotton thread if you're making these for friends because they might put them in the microwave thinking that you could do that i don't know what they you know and if they did that i would want you to be covered so i did say a hundred percent cotton thread and then all of the pieces that you need to make this are listed in this top box right here and then we're going to walk through how to make it and i've already gotten uh a jump start because i did cut out the template so we saved some time there and i've pre-cut all of the pieces for today can i just tell y'all these are even cuter in person they are adorable i always feel like things are way cuter in person i have a hard time like capturing what it really looks like in a picture marion said what is that again about corn ah okay so right now especially in virginia is the perfect time to get fresh corn on the cob you know with the little leaves still on it still with the silk in it and uh like food lion yesterday there were 20 cents in the year uh so now is the perfect time to do it so you just put the whole ear of corn in you don't shuck the corn or anything and for each ear of corn you put in the microwave you cook for three minutes so if you got four ears in the microwave that's 12 minutes once you're done you cut off the end and squeeze that corn right on out and it's perfect i did not know you can do that yes vicky said don't use insulbright if you are putting it in the microwave that's good to know i didn't know that i don't have any insole braid i was gonna go buy some but then i ran out of time just as well then all right so here are the things that i'm using today i do have all my little straps cut strips i said straps uh these are the little stripes we're going to be using today i have my little label that i made the little squares i'm using a warm and natural batting today so it's all cotton batting and we're going to make this into a hot pad so i have those fabrics cut and our back fabric yeah dory you don't have to shuck the corn it just comes out nice and clean i was thinking about making little hot pads a video on that and showing cooking corn in the microwave oh that's a good idea yeah it's on my to-do list maybe i should jump on that while corn is still in season i need to run to food line for you 20 cents an ear all right y'all we're gonna go ahead and get started the first thing we're gonna do because i haven't done any of this yet i wanted y'all to see it is we're going to take the backing fabric and we're going to fold that right in half we're going to match up our paper template to the folded edge just like that and uh you could with scissors trim off these ends you could mark that with a pin but for me it's just a lot faster to trim it off with a rotary cutter i know this is making sheila nervous because we had to talk about the rotary cutter before we came on live so we're just rounding off those corners of the backing fabric like that and we're going to do that same process with each one of these layers of batting so that's going to take me a minute maybe i should have just hold something yeah you want to hold that okay [Music] i want to thank you all for uh moderating today thank you all so much it's so great to see y'all all right we're doing the same thing with the batting we're going to round those corners off careful not to cut your folded edge so there's one yay thank you here's two so this is probably the longest part of the whole process is just trimming off these corners once you get through this these actually make up really quick i don't know about y'all but i love when i'm working on a project and i have all the little bits cut out just looking at that is so satisfying all right and this is our last one all right so once we have our three layers of batting we're gonna put that off to the side for a second we are going to lay our backing fabric with the pretty side facing down and y'all uh when we have layered all of these pieces it's going to be kind of thick so you might want to use your walking foot if you can adjust the pressure of your presser foot that might be helpful and you also might find it useful to increase your stitch length because we're going to be feeding three layers of batting plus our backing fabric plus the stuff we're using for the top so those are some things that i wanted to uh say that might help you have a little bit of an easier time we're going to heat this iron up because i'm glue basting all of these layers of course you are that's not a surprise i've actually never really heard of it until i started watching your videos really i surely didn't invent it but one day i was watching youtube youtube is awesome and uh you know i can't even remember who it was now but it was a game changer for me i can especially see with all these layers of batting because they could shift and yes it just keeps everything nice and neat right stable and it doesn't bunch up you know if you were to put pins in all of these layers it would kind of like uh pinch it up a little bit of course i mean you could baste but then this is easier yes and i'm just being kind of generous with that glue in between these layers and we will dry this here in just a second we're just stacking the three layers of batting right on top of that backing fabric hello everybody if y'all are just joining me just to let you know we have ms sheila many of you have talked with sheila in the live chat before sheila is the one who usually mentions what kind of tea she's drinking that might ring a bell shout out to my tea drinkers all right so i've just kind of finger pressed those layers we're going to shift this pressing board over just a little bit if i need to move on nope you're good and we're just gonna dry this real quick what is a walking foot a walking foot hold on a second miss trinita and i'll pull one out yeah can you see it should be in that little tray right there a walking foot helps feed the top layers at the same time as your feed dogs feed the lower layers so kind of just like little fingers grabbing the top layers it's really helpful when quilting if you have a walking foot give me one second miss trinita and she sheila is going to hold that walking foot over here i just want to dry this up do you need to iron the batting miss marion i do because i want to dry that glue before i bring anything over to the sewing machine and so that's one of the reasons why we're working with a cotton batting is this is not going to shrink at all when i'm pressing and drying that glue if you don't want to dry the glue this way you could just let it sit and dry but you don't want to bring any wet glue if you're glue basting over to the sewing machine all right oh thank you all right this is my walking foot a lot of them look exactly like this trinita but what it does is it has little grippies they look like feed dogs for the top of your uh fabric and it grabs everything at the same time as your grippy feed dogs do at the bottom and it feeds everything through they're supposed to help it just evenly feed the stuff uh the wood burning warrior said i have thermo lamb plus batting can i use that in the microwave i am not sure because i've never used it i would do you have the package that it came in or instructions i would make sure to double check if you don't you could probably look it up online and see i'm not sure have you ever used that before i've never heard of it all right so once this is cooled off y'all we're going to be breezing right through this we're going to bring that right over and we're going to bring over our paper template one more time and we're gonna match that up to the left side just like that and you'll see a little dotted box right in the middle and that gives us uh the perfect placement for our pieces so today i have these fabrics i have three pinks so we're going to start with pink in the middle we're just lining that piece right up to the dotted line and i'm going to throw a little pin just to hold that in place i'm not going through all those layers because it would bunch everything up just that top layer of batting just to hold it once you've pinned it in place uh you're good you can remove the template you're going to bring over the four remaining pieces we're going to flip those over to the back side flip them over so that the pretty side is facing down let me get a little ruler and what i want you to do is i want you to take a pin and make a little marking a quarter of an inch away on two sides just like that let's flip it over that's easier this is going to give us little start and stop points for this middle row of patchwork so that our quilting is nice and neat on the back when you were doing this with the other project i didn't quite understand until you sew the other part of it on and flipped it over and i was like now i get it now it makes sense uh you know it's not really necessary but what it does if you were just to sew from edge to edge when you join these rows your quilting on the back is going to come into those two rows just a little smidgen and so it just helps keep the back a little bit neater and again we only have to do that for these first four pieces that we're adding you might want to use a pen like a heat erasing pen or a water soluble marker i'm just using a regular pen but you probably don't want to do that now we're ready to start sewing that's right so we're going to bring over our two green fabrics first let me just check to make sure we're not missing anything because cheryl said thank you for messing thank you for message oh you're so welcome i hope you all are feeling better all right we're ready to start sewing i'm going to set up the sewing machine with a quarter inch seam allowance again if you increase your stitch length just a little bit uh it's going to help feed everything through there a little bit easier so i have mine set at a 2.4 but i'm using a jukey hzl f600 so your machine might be different you might need to play around you just kind of want it to feed through and not get all bunched up in there the first thing we're going to do is we're going to join these two pieces so we have on pretty side we're going to flip them over and we're going to sew from mark to mark right there doing a back stitch at the beginning and the end because this is going to be in the quilting and then we're going to add these two and then we're going to stay there because i'm going to finger press those over and then we're going to add these two and then we'll come back all right so we're coming over here we're going to move these green fabrics over we're adding yeah the two green ones first we're gonna match up the raw edges with our first piece and then you might have to lift this presser foot up to feed everything through there we're going to lower that needle right on that quarter inch mark like that and take a couple stitches back stitch and now we're sewing down to this other little mark and the back stitch we can now just flip that piece over and just finger press that you could press that with the iron if you wanted to we're going to add the next piece on the other side and we're going to bring that down right on the line we'll flip that piece over and now we can add these other two pieces now these when you add these they will stick off the edge that's okay we're going to trim that off here in a little bit this is such a fun project i feel like you could cut pre-cut all of these pieces and just make an assembly line and knock out a whole bunch of these at one time you could and i feel like let's say you're going to a holiday party or something and you want to take a hostess gift it would be a great hostess gift or you know it's just so fun and i've never watched a quilt as you go video before until i watched your other one right it's much easier than i thought it would be what's really cool about this is that once you're done making it you're done you don't have to come back and quilt it everything is you're knocking out several steps all at one time alright so we flip that piece over you see how it is sticking out past the edge and that's okay we're going to trim all that off here in just a little bit don't just step on your foot okay so we tapped it i just stepped on her foot i'm tally all right you could uh bring the iron over and press that if you wanted to uh i just finger press it over and the fabric kind of wants to stick to that batting anyway and holds it down we can take that pin out of the middle fabric and now we start adding the strips to each side so it goes by pretty quick trinita uh you can see i'm not using my walking foot i just suggested because it might be easier for some people to use their walking foot but you can see i'm not using the walking foot what i would suggest is increase your stitch length because that will help with all of the thickness of all of this going through the presser foot but i'm not using my walking foot so if you don't have one you're okay it's just a lot of people find it helpful to use their walking foot all right for these other strips where's my little pattern and i would think if you maybe if you didn't glue baste it if you maybe use pins or something it might definitely be easier to use a wall yes yes because i think what would happen is it would shift it would want to start shifting all right the little strips we're adding to either side i've already pre-cut some these are these were three and a half by three and a half the tin strips you need to cut that go on either side are one and three quarters wide and i said 14 inches some strips uh you'll need that 14 inches and some as we work towards the corner you don't really need the full 14 inches but uh yeah one and three quarters by 14 inches and we're just going to start adding the strips on either side uh and i do have two shorter ones so we have to make sure that the shorter ones get towards the end you know also i was thinking you know if you're making a quilt and sometimes you have those little bits left over those small little strips and you're like what can i do with these this is a great way to use those yes and i'm quite sure that we probably all have those let's see how what how would you arrange the colors on this i'm going to let you lay out we just need this to go in that corner because it's short right oh wow so how would you arrange these colors pressure is on let's see here i don't know wanda you're gonna start yours today yay you'll have to post pictures i don't know how does that look no that looks really good all right so i'm gonna match you on this side like that and then you had the pink and then the red and the yellow and the green all right i'm gonna stack these because we're gonna just bring this over to the sewing machine and i'm gonna be there for a few minutes but it's not really going to take that long and we're going to knock out the front of this trivet well if i was at home i would be like debating this for five minutes where to put those straps you were just like this yeah and that looks so good take a picture let's see maybe you should make videos and then your projects will go by so much faster that's true look how fast you made those decisions i just you know i'll come to your house and tell you you could do that just all right we're gonna bring this over to the sewing machine y'all and uh the first two strips we're gonna add just like this we're gonna put the pretty sides down and when you do you want your ends to go over the edge of your trivet right we don't really have to be so picky about where we're lining them up you just need the ends to go beyond the edge of your trivet all right and really the toughest one is this first one uh because all the rest of the seams get shorter from here on out and there is no quarter inch starting and stopping we're just sewing from edge to edge yeah we're gonna knock this out yes aren't these fabrics so pretty they are pretty really pretty all right from edge to edge does anybody by any chance know this fabric line it's you think it's probably some a 30s line i have there's a basket down there and in that basket there's a bag of salvage edges that i've saved if you want to grab that we could let them know what fabrics they look like okay sure i saved them because i loved it so much so again we're just using the quarter inch seam allowance down on the ground there's a basket towards the right in the basket there is a bag oh okay okay i'll find it there's not that much fabric in the basket but in the basket there's a bag do you see the bag um no but i see the salvage edges okay maybe i took them out of the bag in my getting organized y'all there's no bag i don't think there's this one here uh these are so cute it looks like a variety it's a judy rothermell one something around the world all right we've got our first two strips on we're just gonna finger press those over see that cotton batting it just kind of holds everything right in place we'll bring over the next two unless there's a bag all right here we go again make sure your edges are off of the edge of the trivet we'll fold that one over and add the yellow on the other side i feel like i should bring this out just a little bit hold on one second y'all i feel like i'm really close up i want you to be able to see a little bit more of what i'm doing there we go sorry about all the moving there we go i might be able to see a little bit more this way as we work towards the corner these seams get shorter and shorter so you can bring in some shorter pieces at this point oh i like how you arranged these fabrics i'm now playing with fabrics i love the texture of the three layers of batting it is very very quilty i really feel like this is a good beginner project too what do you think do you think this is beginner i think you would need a little bit of experience because of the layers oh yeah the layers but um i definitely think you could do it as a beginner if you have a little bit of experience yeah under your belt i mean doesn't have to be a lot of experience so like maybe if you were just doing this as a mug rug with one layer it would probably be a lot easier do you think it would be and i i i was just thinking that like a mug if you did a mug rug then you could probably graduate to this yeah certainly if you if you've done a mug rug i've got three of those all right we've got four more strips we've got yellow oh that goes all the way to the end one two three four five oh i had an extra strip we don't need these little green ones all right we only have this strip left to add then there should be five strips five to the right and five to the left of these three and a half inch pieces all right and that is all of the sewing for the top of our trivet let me switch this camera over so these were extras yeah i can save them for another one so there's the top and it's going to look really crazy because we have all of this extra stuff so the next thing we're going to do is trim all of that off before we do that though i do like to glue baste the end pieces so that those stay in place everything else is kind of sewn down i think it's helpful just to add a little bit of glue on this end piece to help hold that in place before we trim it debbie missed at the beginning this is sheila debbie you've talked with sheila in the zooms i'm quite sure debbie lives in virginia beach her daughter is anna i'm sure i have i'm she's the one that um did you uh she's taking your daughter to camp or something she did okay okay yes i'm not the best with names but i remember little details all right we're just going to dry this really quick and then sheila found my selvage edges we're going to look at the fabrics i found a couple a couple well you know i didn't realize i actually thought that maybe it was if not from the same i think it's different it is from different manufacturers and everything but you've just really put things together so well well it wasn't me uh i can't take the credit for it so uh right at the beginning of kovid we had gone to vermont right i don't know if you remember we took a trip up there we took a bunch of food up to vermont well there was a quilt shop that was open and we were the only ones in there and she had two tables of fat quarters and uh she had grouped all of these fabrics together in fat quarters and i just went to town i was like yes and i bought several of them so yes i didn't like pick and choose they were already kind of grouped together was it the same fabric shop that you mentioned no this was a different one oh vermont has a lot of yeah they do all right let's see those salvage edges these are what i found uh that you used in this project playdate by nancy mahoney for pb textiles uh what do you think that said around the world something around the world i don't know how would you say her last name uh rothermell rothermel judy rothermill from marcus brothers textiles and aunt grace 15th anniversary collection 2006 from the collection of judy rothermill for marcus brothers so that gives you an idea of fabrics to uh to go search for i love them so much we were talking i think one of the reasons why i love them so much holly hobby is that am i saying yes yes i had a holly hobby doll when i was little and it reminds me of her clothes so i think that's why i'm drawn to it so much all right y'all so once you get all the strips added to the front we're just going to turn this over pretty side facing down you can bring in your little template if that helps you or you can just use the edge of your trivet you can line it up like that and we're going to trim all of this away and you can do it with scissors if you want if you're more comfortable doing it with scissors i'm just going to use my rotary cutter and trim [Laughter] some days this is easier than others i have essential tremors and so some days this is probably not a good idea for me to do it this way i feel like mornings are worse i was telling lisa when i took my very first quilting class the teacher was old school and would not let us use a rotary cutter and i had never used one didn't even know how and we had to make our own templates and use those which told her in hindsight was good i know how to do that but i think for a beginner it it can be a little off-putting because it is more difficult i would think so too lisa knows who i'm talking about we have a local well she's she's not open anymore she's retired uh but that was the first quilt shop i ever went to was hers a long time ago all right so this is where the magic happens right because we just trim all that away and our trivet just takes shape just like that isn't that pretty it is pretty oh you laid it out so pretty all right so at this point y'all we have a couple different options you could just make this a trivet right because we did a quilt as you go the back is quilted and i know because i used a thread that blends into the back it's hard oh there you go you can kind of see it that way um you would just put a binding on this now because of the curved edges uh a bias binding is really important and it would be so much easier to do with a bias binding i don't have any videos on bias binding but jeannie over on creative crew she shared a couple of really good videos i've watched all of them that she shared and so if you don't know how to cut and prepare bias binding and you're on creative crew check out the videos that jeannie posted last night and i think there was one this morning um yeah and one of the ways that she shared i had not seen before and i'm gonna try it out this weekend but if you're not on facebook or the creative crew just do a search for youtube uh how to make bias binding the curved edges is the reason why you need that bias binding so you could just throw a binding on this and you would have a trivet which would be super adorable all on its own but we're going to make this a dual purpose trivet and we're going to make the hot pads for the back roberta said the teal one with the flowers is from the 30s collection because i had several colors 20 years ago that's right because it said it was an anniversary collection yeah so they must have brought it back marion said they have a lot of these prints on missouri star online site that's good to know because i don't know that we'll be going to that quilt shop anytime soon uh even from harlan's parents house that was quite a drive to get there so all right so if you want to turn this trivet into a hot pad you're going to need two more fabrics i've got them cut here the size is um 14 inches long by 10 inches tall and we're gonna fold those in half and you don't have to do this but i like to glue a base to them just making sure i was working with the right fabrics i just add a little bit of glue stick in there kind of helps it's like having extra hands you want to press that make it work i am by this afternoon i'll be bossing you around and stuff you'll feel like i'm so ready to go home i'm here to help this is going to help keep these two layers together as we make this into a hot pad that should be good because i'm not used to ironing the glue basting so it just takes a second and we're just drying that glue and these are going to go on the back right just like that before we do that though i like to go ahead and trim and round off my corners so let's bring in the paper template for that and this time y'all uh unlike what we did for trimming the back and the batting this time you'll notice that the paper template um well for this one it actually is the same size but for the other one it extends past the other one we're going to line up the straight edge of the template with the folded edge of these pieces oh yeah it does okay i'm not losing my mind it does i want you to this is the raw edge that's the folded edge i want you to line up your template with the raw edge rotary cutter and we're going to round off the corners for our back hand panel pieces like that i think it's almost time for a new blade i cut all of those t-shirts behind me and i think i've pretty much done in the blade on this cutter i did see all the lint on it i was thinking i know don't judge me about it that's all the t-shirts i cut yesterday yeah i saw i saw your pose that was a lot all right so we're rounding the corners for our hand panels now one of the things that i wanted to show you i like to give lots of different options right i'm just throwing that right in the floor you could just leave your little hand panels with a nice little folded edge like that i probably though would do a little top stitch close to that fold right you could put them on just like that bring this to the sewing machine and do a little top stitch but i like to dress it up just a little bit more than that and it doesn't really take that long to do this i was checking to see that one piece is just long enough that second piece is i think this is the one for the binding okay these were my extra strips for the front that green would be cute i was like our binding strips for the hand panels let's see how big those need to be i cut mine at two and a half inches wide by 10 inches long of course you could always change this you want to press these for me it would probably be easier than me reaching over there you go get to work and now if you wanted to make your binding strips a little bit thinner you certainly could do that we're just pressing these binding strips in half like it's normal binding and we're going to add it right here to the front and then flip it over and sew it on the back so if you don't want to do binding as thick as that you certainly don't have to this is said it's all the fabrics you're using fat quarters yep these are all leftover fat quarters from my pie quilt block that was a cute quilt it is sitting in pieces over in that bin over there thank you i have not put it together yet but yeah i just bought a whole bunch of fat quarters a whole bunch and that's usually when i go to quilt shops i usually buy fat quarters i know a lot of people when they go they buy yardage i'm a fat quarter fabric buyer so when i say she has a lot of fabric she has a lot of like little pieces yes yes so you look over there and there it's just like wow because there's so many different colors but it's all little pieces of leftover fat quarters i usually buy if it's something i'll oftentimes buy a half a yard yeah i can see that the only time i buy yardage is when i'm ready for a backing and i'll be like okay i need six yards ah i think because i like to make bags so that's why you need bigger yeah just little bags yeah all right so we're going to take this over to the sewing machine and we're going to attach the binding and i like to put my little label in there because that's what i like to do where's my scissors let me just trim this off a little bit i like to add my little label to this part of the hot pad so i'm just gonna stick that there for a second you know i wondered before when you were sewing and you didn't want to hit that if you had that you have like a little silicone or you know your little if you could almost put that on if you were sewing right up again need to iron right up against it so it wouldn't melt i think you could do that or just cover it with a piece of cotton or uh like parchment paper or something this is i don't usually just i'm just go go go oh no especially during the lives but i just i just didn't know i thought oh that might that would save it because uh it's polyester and if you hit it with the iron it's gonna shrink and melt it it will so all right there's my little label we're gonna take the raw edge of the binding and match it up to the folded edge of these hand panels and i sew that on with a quarter inch seam allowance inga said does the cotton batting doesn't scorch your iron no i do have some scourge burnt stuff on my iron right now but that's glue and probably some starch it does need a good little cleaning but that's not from the batting that's because just using it yeah it happens that's starch and glue yeah lisa has a lot of fat quarters me too miss lisa oh goodness kathleen i'm so sorry i hate to hear that her mom passed away two weeks ago i'm so sorry she's thinking about making body pillows for everyone that is such a good idea and then they could just hold it oh i kind of like that better than a quilt idea plus you could make a lot of those if you're giving them away what is a body is that made out of a clothing or something a body pillow when i think body pillow i think the long pillows the bigger the bonnie pillow oh sorry i'm sorry but still that's really nice yeah that's a great idea yeah i think so too you know what i'm not your mom passing away is way different than my cat passed away but my cat was very important to my son and i think that might be a great idea to have a have my cat's picture and then for my son so he could hug it yeah because he misses that thank you for the idea hmm i'm so sorry vicky said i must have missed where to get the pattern vicky you'll want to get the pattern from the description box so uh there's a little arrow if you're watching on a cell phone little gray arrow next to the title of the video you have to leave the live chat to see it okay and if you're on a computer you still have to leave the live chat and uh you'll look under the title of the video there's a little caption that says see more you'll click on that and that's where you find the pattern we're going to come back to the sewing machine for a second quarter inch whoopsies quarter inch seam allowance we're going to attach these little binding strips on again the raw edge of your binding to the folded edge of your hand panels if you don't want to add the binding just do a little top stitch right close to that edge so there's the first one that would even be cute to do a decorative stitch there if you yeah if you didn't want to do binding yes i always forget about all of these decorative stitches all right we're going to press that real quick and this is the only one that we've got to be careful with because of the little label so i just press that one from the back that takes care of that yeah and then i bring in my glue stick do a little swipe of glue like that fold it over and dry that glue y'all could use binding clips if you don't want to use the glue you could use the binding clips would hold that right in there i just uh feel like i have a little bit more control with the glue now we're going to bring this over to the sewing machine one more time and we're going to sew right in that ditch i think the green would have been cuter as the binding than this darker i don't it just you just didn't wasn't quite long enough yep but that's so cute though probably would have ripped that last one out put that green [Laughter] now you tell me oh well you're going live that was just me now you tell me but apparently i just love my seam ripper all right we're going to bring this to the sewing machine and we're going to stitch that right in the ditch let's let that one cool off for a second and then we'll bring this one in okay okay actually we're just gonna keep this right here like that i think i'm am i making you nervous with the hot iron no right there yeah all right i can get rid of this and this and give us a little bit more space and i'm bringing in the wet glue oops i need the scissors all right so there is our finished hand panel pieces we're just going to trim off this extra little binding just like that and those pieces go right in the floor and we have all these pieces that can go right and the floor kathleen said if if you could overlap those two pieces you could use this trivet for cooking those corn on the cobs ooh i could i uh i have used my prototype to pull them out of the microwave i don't know that i would put this in the microwave but i guess you could but it would i mean it's so pretty i don't want to mess it up [Laughter] all right so uh because we're going to finish this without a binding here's what we're going to do we're going to put this pretty side facing up and then we're going to take our hand panels with the smaller side of the binding see that extra binding on the back the pretty side of the binding goes down like that towards the trivet was that a two inch binding that was two and a half okay see the extra i feel like you could do a little bit less uh and get away with it but you don't really see that either so i know you mentioned in your other video but i didn't know if i distracted you today just for because i'm usually a watcher so i pay attention to these things you know because i'm usually out there watching with y'all now i'm going to take some little drops of glue like this around the edge of these hand panels and just line them up like that and those were just tiny drops yeah they're little tiny tiny you certainly don't need a lot right around the edge and we're gonna dry that there we go and we're drying yes sally said you cannot microwave 80 20 batting uh or polyester thread that is so true this is a warm and natural all cotton batting and we are using a cotton thread today i still i probably would not put this in the microwave i mean i would use it as a trivet or as a hot pad but you know if you're making these and giving them as gifts you never know what they're going to do with it so i would make sure you're using all cotton just in case because somebody might put this in the microwave they might people put all sorts of things in the microwave i know that's right so they might berta i'm so glad that that you like the glue as much as i do it's a game changer even if you did just the one layer and just find it be a cute little placemat even yes but it is cute with the extra thickness in person it's kind of hard to see it through the camera but just the quiltiness of the three layers even though it's really thin batting y'all the warm and natural is pretty thin batting but it's almost like a soft and stable the way it is quilted up yes yes uh the type of glue i'm using uh through up until now i've been using the elmer's washable glue stick the clear one i like the clear one and then when i just did the wet glue i'm using elmer's glue all you could also use the one the school glue it looks like a chalkboard on the front both of these will wash out of your quilt when you're all done all right so we're going to bring this to the sewing machine one more time and we're going to sew all the way around with a quarter inch seam allowance i said one more time this is next to the last time i get ahead of myself at this point you probably do want to increase that stitch length uh i have a 2.8 set up right now and i think that that's just going to help feed everything through there a lot easier the little curved edges i have to stop i have to really concentrate all right we're back and i passed where we started i'm just gonna do a little back stitch and i can see uh i probably want to trim a little bit of this off in these corners before we turn it it's a little bit of especially right there that's what i noticed just trim trim trim just trim making sure not to cut your seam yeah that's a lot of bulk that is a lot it's very very bulky there we go now i do feel like if you snip these little corners you might have a little bit of an easier time there we go i'm going to just do a couple little snips in these corners i call them corners but they're not really corners are they rounded corners rounded corners you might have to trim layers at a time just a couple snips kathleen you're buffering i wonder if it's on my end i have a green light though so today i think we're doing good on my end hopefully couldn't you just use a jelly roll you could your trivet would be bigger or you could trim your jelly roll pieces to fit five on each side of that middle strip uh they're cut at one and three quarters so you could cut your jelly roll or you could make a bigger trivet either way yeah you could use a jelly roll all right i just snipped my little corners and we're just gonna reach right in and pull this right side out magic all right hold on one second ah i'm going to pause for a second because i think several people are buffering so let's just pause for a second kathleen said the red binding you put on yesterday was pretty isn't that pretty it really finished off that one really pretty sylvia all of the measurements are in the beginning of the video and in the pattern and the pattern is in the description box of the video jackie said she's buffering what if i'm buffering see if you're buffering ah wood burning warriors has no buffering here good i have a solid green light so i'm hoping that it's not on my end it's working here okay connie oh i'm so glad you got on your laptop connie i love you all right we're gonna pull um the right side out on both sides right you need to do that on both sides dari says her internet booted her off vicki's not buffering but jackie said that youtube is buffering on several channels so it's not just us i'm gonna go to twitter go see twitter will tell you because when youtube messes up twitter goes do they yes all right once we have both sides flipped right side out i just like to reach in with my fingers and i kind of you know have to boss it around to get that thicker seam pushed out on the edge like that right i just use my fingers and go in there and push that out with this method you will have a little bit of a raw edge right there and right there doesn't so much bother me you could make these panels a little bit longer if you wanted to cover that up or you could throw a binding on this right but we're getting ready to bring this to the sewing machine for the last time this really is the last time and we're going to sew again with a uh i like to use about a quarter of an inch it kind of looks like a binding if you do it a little bit wider stitch all the way around the edge i'm just gonna press this really once you stitch it all around as long as you catch the where it's turned underneath on this side you're good yes but uh you know you're gonna see it from the top mainly so all right so that's about as flat as she's gonna get right we're gonna bring that to the sewing machine one more time one more time for today again you might need to lift up your presser foot to feed all of this through there right lift it up i'm doing a little bit less than quarter of an inch all the way around i think if we did something like this when i was younger my sister would have used it for like barbie sleeping bags [Laughter] yeah a little bit barbies in each end you know all right we're back to where we started i know you can't see that because i'm using a thread that really blends in there i'm just going to pass it a little bit and do a back stitch and this time i'm not going to use my thread cutters because that leaves oh i did that last time too i don't like to use my thread cutters when i'm finally finishing up because sometimes it leaves a little bit of a mess back there and then i go and hit the thread cutters have it i did that last time too sometimes it leaves quite a little mess on the back side it's much cleaner if i just pull it away all right there we go y'all isn't that so cute it's very cute it's so cute i like to touch it touch it it's like that's so cute so that is it y'all i really feel like you know if you just spent some time pre-cutting strips and the little squares actually if you just pulled over a scrap basket you might have all of this stuff you know if you just make it scrappy you might already have a lot of these pieces already cut and you just start sewing it really does go together pretty quick i know sometimes i do cut my little scraps down into pieces kind of large like if it's two and a half like that two and a half or two or you know but um this would be a great way to use all of this yes because i already have the strips yes so uh i didn't catch that little edge right there i have to go back and go a little bit closer but yeah so here's your little hot pocket places for your hands and uh a nine what is it the 9 by 13 is the pretty standard size casserole pyrex fits perfectly on this so and it was also if you have a basket that's big enough you could even like put this in the bottom of your basket and put your casserole in and carry it she's so full of good ideas and i have a long burger once it's not my idea that's a good idea i know connie you were supposed to send me a message so i'll call you this evening if you don't have plans look for a phone call from me it was written in my planner to get you set up on zoom all right y'all i hope today's video has been like really uh inspirational i hope that you grab this pattern again it's down in the description box the videos we're doing from here on out
