hello everybody hello how is everyone doing welcome to thursday june the 4th june the 4th today we're going to be making a mug rug and a place mat the pattern is called old glory uh for those who are watching on the replay if you're watching this and we are not live and you're watching to see how uh to put these together this is a live video so it's gonna be a little bit longer than your normal tutorial hello everybody so if you're watching on the replay check out the description box because after this video is posted and published here on my channel i'm going to go through and write down all the time stamps so that you can skip to the parts that you want to see we're going to be doing lots of stuff today we're going to be doing a foundation a piecing on batting quilt as you go to make these mug rugs in place mats we're going to be doing some paper piecing we're going to make these projects two different ways with and without paper piecing perfect for a beginner and an experienced quilter alike so we're going to be doing a both of those methods today and we're going to be doing some raw edge applique with the stars i'm going to show you a couple of different variations for ways to finish these projects when you're done so lots of information in this tutorial i'm so glad you're here and if you want to skip all the chitter chatter that might happen today well i can pretty much guarantee you that is going to happen because we're live and i love spending time with my family uh if you want to skip to different parts check out the time stamps that i'm going to put in the description box also down there i have linked the pattern if you want to make these uh two different projects and you think the pattern will help you then you can check out the pattern that is in the description box however i do think after watching this tutorial you can probably make these projects without the pattern and maybe you don't want to make these projects but we do a method in today's tutorial that gives you ideas and inspiration to make your own projects so i hope you stick around even if you don't plan on making these two specific projects yay i'm so glad you're here hello everybody hello everybody i'm so excited to see you so excited we have a lot of stuff lined up for today and i'm just going to give it a few minutes before we get started um also also in the description box is a link for the creative crew group if you i haven't joined in your you do facebook then that group is a lot of fun and very helpful and then there's a link to my lisa cape and quilts facebook page where i post all of my stuff and i would love it if you followed me there yay for chitter chatter missing the social chats yeah me too hello everybody so great to see you yeah like i just mentioned you don't specifically have to want to make this mug rug or this place map but maybe the techniques that i show in today's video will be something that you can put into your tools toolbox you know your skills toolbox and use it down the road to create your own fun unique little projects so hopefully all of this will be really helpful for you i don't know if you can hear my bird he's decided he must be alone downstairs he doesn't like being alone miss sherry thank you so much for moderating uh thank you so much i know you are working and i know you are super busy but i do appreciate having you here keeping an eye on our chat making it so that it's an enjoyable place to come and relax and be inspired and hang out with fellow uh quilters crafters artisans thank you so much so i did release this pattern yesterday i want to i want to just take a second this pattern let me go ahead and uh switch the screen over this pattern is a little bit oh goodness let me there we go all the different screens this pattern is a little bit different than all of the ones in my etsy shop because there's some paper piecing portions i have a cockatoo i have an umbrella cockatoo andy he does not like being alone and i'm thinking everybody is outside right now downstairs so he's throwing a fit i can hear him i did not write out full detailed instructions on paper piecing the portions of this pattern because it is so confusing when you're reading it that's why i wanted to come and do a video and walk you through because you can make this project with or without paper piecing so we're going to piece the mug rug together without paper piecing and it goes together really easy and really quick and then the placemat we're going to make together we're going to do the paper piecing portion and i'm going to show you how to do that it's a lot of fun so here's the pattern this is an 11 page pdf just to let you know if you do purchase this pattern there are actually two files to download there's this 11 page pdf and then there's a separate svg file it has both of the stars the one for the mug rug and the one for the placemat both of those are in that svg file for those of you who like to cut your applique out with sv cutting machines that accept svg files if you don't have a cutting machine and you're going to do your applique the way that i do it in this video then you can just leave that svg file right with etsy there's no need to even download it hello carol thank you for keeping an eye on my chat today i can rest easy i can rest easy and focus on doing the projects i know i'm in good hands with our moderators thank you so much pat it's your first time here welcome i'm so glad you stopped by hopefully you find some inspiration in what we're doing today it is so great to see y'all oh you have a conyer he's the same way yeah i think they're so our bird is so spoiled he wants to be with his family he wants to be with his flock and when we all leave him in the room by himself he is not happy about it diana you're out of town i hope you enjoy your visit yeah mimsy the svg that's actually a cutting file that the cutting machines read it's kind of like a road map it tells the blade and the cutting machine exactly where to go from start to finish so if you don't have a cutting machine just leave that file right there and download the pdf so let's jump in and get started let's take a look at this pdf it's broken into two sections chris is your first time too yay welcome all right if i miss y'all's questions or i miss your comments know that i'm not intentionally ignoring you i try to focus but if you have questions for me uh if you can type them in all caps that just makes it a little bit easier for me to see as i'm strolling through the comments on my phone they're really tiny so let's take a look at this pattern real quick before we dive in and start creating okay the first a few pages is the mug rug pattern and then the last section is the placemat pattern there's a few more pages in the placemat pattern so let me give you some measurements let me give you some measurements the mug rug size finished is eight by nine and a half and the placemat finished size is 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall hello needing i'm good how are you i'm good so those are your two measurements of the two projects that we're doing today here's what you need to gather just a couple tools you'll need a rotary cutter and some scissors today i'm using an elmer's school glue glue stick you could use wet glue as well i like using the school glue elmer's school glue but today i'm using um a glue stick hello miss connie hello and let's see you'll need a straight edge ruler you'll need some batting and some fabric all the fundamental things you'll need for sewing like the sewing machine all right so let's jump in your um i think what'll be easiest is if i just separate the two projects and let's start with the mug rug okay let's just put this pattern right to the side the placemat we will do once the mug rug is done and the mug rug we're not going to do a paper piecing we're going to do the second bottom portion where all the pieces are just long strips and some applique stars okay now i've already pre-done different parts of this okay so i have my batting the batting is the same size as the mug rug eight inches wide and nine and a half inches tall i have a backing fabric that is at least an inch bigger than my batting all on all four sides so if you want to cut it out to size it would be 10 inches wide and 11 and a half inches tall for your backing fabric and then i am just working with some scraps today uh they're not any specific size they're just larger half an inch larger than the position pieces on the pattern okay so i didn't pre-cut these to any specific size they're just bigger than where they go on the pattern and i'm going to show you that here in a second and for the applique today i'm using heat n bond light but you could use your favorite preferred fusible whatever you like to do raw edge applique with so those are my materials ready to go let's take a look at this pattern of course all of that is written on this first page okay everything that i just explained the mugrug template for your pattern is two pages and i want you to note that there's a dotted line right here and here we're going to actually cut apart this pattern on the dotted line to prepare the template that we're going to use how is everybody doing my hands are a little shaky today y'all a little shaky today i wanted i had thought about pre-cutting out all of these things but i want uh anyone who has already purchased or is thinking about purchasing the pattern to see the exact steps that i go through when i'm creating these so i'm just cutting out each one of the templates on the line and then once i have the two pieces cut out right where that dotted line was i'm going to tape that together that's going to give us a full size template to work with you'll also notice that the little traceable star applique is right on your pattern so you're not going to lose that that's actually the star that we're going to trace here in just a little bit to do the stars on our mug rug so we have our two pieces we're just going to line those up as straight as possible lisa as straight as possible we want our lines going nice and straight there we go and i'm just gonna tape this right in place miss sharon if there is a link to this pattern in the description box of this video so if you leave the live chat and you go to the description box there is a pattern uh it takes you straight over to the etsy listing sometimes i like to throw a couple of pieces on the back too it doesn't have to be a lot just enough to hold these two pieces together so there's the full size template that's how big our mug rug is going to be right there we have our star applique and it says to cut three of the stars that's for the mug rug the very next thing we're going to do is fold on the solid lines so it says right on your paper pattern template to fold the template on the solid line to mark your batting let's go ahead and pre-fold so each where there's a solid line on your pattern just give that a crease and fold it this is going to come in real handy here in a second fold there and then one more so there's three folds on the mug rug just like that one more there we go correct this is a paid for pattern miss terry however i'm thinking that after watching this most people or a lot of people can probably get an idea of how it's made and create your own templates right or inspire you to mix another project using this method so there's our mug rug template right there and then we have two more pieces now this is gonna be if you are doing the paper piecing portion this one we're gonna make a little bit different with solid pieces we're not doing paper piecing with the mug rug however when we get to the placemat when we do the placemat we're going to do paper piecing so those instructions exact same technique with these two templates for your mug rug if you want to do paper piecing we're gonna make this nice and simple for the mug rug so for this template we're not using this no paper piecing for this project hello everybody so great to see you so let's jump in and make a mug rug right so we have our paper template that measures eight inches wide and nine and a half inches tall i've already pre-cut my batting same exact size i'm going to go ahead and line up my paper template just like this and because we've pre-folded our template let me make sure it's lined up nice and straight we can fold up each section and mark our batting now i'm using a fabric marker because it's black and it shows up for the video you might want to use like a disappearing ink a water soluble marker to make your lines because my lines are going to be permanent but i wanted them to show up for the live video so each one of those folds we're just folding back and creating the lines exactly in the right place on our batting just like that so there's our fabric positions nice and easy so far right let me move some of this stuff out of the way [Music] for the fabrics jerry your live chat is off any ideas how to fix it i don't know miss jerry i see you in the live chat so is it working now or you just can't see what everyone else is typing yeah mimsy said try to refresh the page and see if that fixes it now uh the fabrics that we're gonna use i did not cut to any pre-sized any pre-measured size i just want them bigger than the actual position where they go so this wider section up here is going to be blue we want the blue fabric to extend at least half an inch i would say over top of all the raw edges the three raw edges and half an inch beyond this line that we just created with the template oh bernadette you have a singer patchwork machine i love my singer patchwork so you see it's just it's a lot bigger i'm using scraps so i didn't have to pre-cut a bunch of stuff i just went through my scrap baskets and grabbed fabrics that were bigger than each one of the position sizes so that saves a little time too right jumping in i'm going to move i'm going to move my pressing board over i have all of this stuff in the way let's move this right on over so you can see there we go i have my pressing board i have my iron warming up let's jump in let's jump in yeah i love my singer patchwork machine hello everybody hello so let's start with the blue fabric the blue fabric we are going to lay pretty side up i know that's hard to see because i'm using a solid it kind of looks the same on both ways right but when you place your first fabric down the blue fabric you're going to want that pretty side up okay i'm gonna go ahead and just apply a little bit of glue stick right in this position here i'm gonna bring that over to my pressing board can you see that i need to scoot up a little bit wrong way there we go so there's my first position i'm just going to lay some blue fabric right over that and i'm going to make sure it extends beyond all of the lines right nice and flat and i'm just gonna dry that glue yes i love my singer patchwork machine she is a faithful hard-working sewing machine she pieced together so many t-shirt quilt tops she worked really hard and she was faithful every day thank you barbara harlan picked that up from nasa has a little gift shop where he works he picked that up for me because they they had a purple one so we're just drying that glue just like that [Music] so guess what the very first thing we're gonna do next see that little line right there we're going to trim this fabric leaving a quarter inch that extends beyond this first line right there so i'm just going to fold my batting until i see that line i'm going to try to keep it nice and straight just like that folding the batting on the line and all of this fabric extends beyond that i'm going to take my straight edge ruler and line that up with the edge of my batting leaving a quarter inch beyond the batting and we're going to trim off all of this extra just like that that'll go in my scrap bin so there we go we've added the blue fabric in position next we're gonna add a white strip ooh beverly you got the uh fiskars cutting mat yay i love my fiskars cutting mat hello debra yeah take good care of your machine bernadette and she'll take care of you we're gonna next add the white strip what are the measurements of the mat you're currently using this is uh 24 i i have stuff covering the measurements i think it's like 24 by 36 or 25 by 36 something like that the next strip is white the blue we put onto the batting pretty side up the white we're gonna put pretty side down and we're going to line up the raw edges of the white fabric with the raw edges of the blue fabric and we want to make sure that the white extends beyond both sides of the batting we're going to trim all that up and make it pretty at the end but you want to make sure that your fabric strip extends beyond the batting okay and align it up with that blue raw edge we're going to start sewing go ahead and set the quarter inch seam on your sewing machine we're going to line up the raw edge of this fabric and sew a quarter inch seam right there along the raw edge that's not only going to sew in our second piece for this pattern but it's also going to quilt our little mug rug at the same time you could do this with a backing fabric already your three layers i prefer to add a backing at the end so there's several different ways that you could do it we're going to go ahead and carefully just move this around right on over to the sewing machine and now hopefully you can see that we're just going to line this up line up those raw edges who have strings everywhere today so there is our first seam there's our first seam i'm going to take my glue stick i'm going to apply some glue in that very next section this section is actually for the white strip that we just added just going to put some glue stick right in there it's just going to hold that in place we're going to flip that white section over and just finger press that nice and flat and then we will dry the glue with our iron and basically we are just repeating this process over and over so let's dry that glue wow y'all are exciting you got new machines new cutting mats anybody else get any new toys here lately all right the glue is dry let's cool off for a second connie i'm using the standard foot that came with my sewing machine a lot of machines come with a quarter inch pressing foot for the quarter inch on my machine i use the standard foot once that's nice and cool let's flip that up you'll see this line that we created again we're going to fold the batting right on that line trying to keep it as straight as possible and then we're going to trim off the extra bits of white for this one that'll go in the scrap buckets and there we go next i'm trying to do it so it's all in the frame we're going to add a red strip again the red strip i didn't pre-measure anything else just a scrap from my bin i'm going to lay it pretty side down onto the white fabric line up that raw edge and make sure that your fabric extends beyond the raw edge of your batting very true connie if you're using an erasing pen a heat erasing pen when you press the marks will go away so if you've used a heat erasing pin to do all your marks make sure you don't press or get any heat on your next sewing lines because you will lose them you will lose them you'll have to mark them again once we have this fabric into place we can move right on over and we're going to sew this seam with a quarter inch seam allowance trim again we're going to apply a little bit of glue in this next empty space this is the space where the red fabric will turn down onto oh you got new applique turning tools whoa beverly you got the ultimate three in one color tool to help choose colors that go together you'll have to take pictures and share that in the creative crew so we can see what that's all about once this is finger pressed over we're just going to iron that nice and flat and dry that glue jerry you got a 16 and a half inch ruler for your next t-shirt quilts that's a good size ruler i don't have that one the biggest one i have is 15 inches so that glue is dry so we have one more fabric to add again we're going to flip over this project find that line that we created using the template fold it over trim off this extra and leave half sorry quarter of an inch of red fabric beyond that batting just like that trim off the extra flip it back over and we have one more piece of white fabric again it's bigger than the position that's going to go in i'm going to match up the raw edge this again will go pretty sides down i know it's hard to see because i'm using a solid but i just pulled some scraps if yours has a pattern on it you want to lay it pretty side down onto your red fabric and making sure that it extends beyond the raw edges of your batting one more seam see how quick this goes together and even though this is the last fabric piece that we're adding i'm going to go ahead and apply a little bit of glue right here too because we're going to use the batting as our template to trim this mug rug up and make it all nice and pretty and i want all the fabrics to stay right in place so we applied a little bit of glue we flipped over the white and just gave that a finger press now i'm gonna dry the glue with my iron and then we're gonna trim this mug mug rug up and make it nice and pretty i dropped my ruler hello everybody oh yeah if you have huge logos on your t-shirts then you probably do need a a 16 and a half inch roller would come in handy wouldn't it all right so there are our four fabrics into place we're done sewing for a second just let that cool off for a second yes the sew as you go this is quilted you would not have to do any additional quilting to this if you did not want to isn't that great plus when we're done we're going to use the batting as our template to cut all of this raw edges right off and make this mug rug nice and pretty so i'm going to go ahead and line up my straight edge ruler with the at the very edge the raw edge of my batting now i'm just trimming off everything that hangs off the side i'm going to try to do it without standing up i'm wearing my stretchy pants y'all wearing my stretchy pants i don't want to stand up this quarantine stretchy pants have made my stretchy pants are my new favorite thing right now we're just going to work our way around each one of the sides of the mug rug just like this using our straight edge ruler and cleaning it right up and one more side just like this i love mug rugs i have them everywhere i have one right here i have one on my desk over there i have one on my nightstand i like making my mug rugs a little bit bigger so that if i want to use them as a mouse pad and a little drink holder it's big enough to do that so here is our mug rug isn't that gorgeous so simple right very simple so one of the fun things about quilting is that there's always more than one way to do anything right we could apply our stars right now and sew them into place while we do not have a backing or you can put your backing on and so your stars down and that's what we're going to do actually i think so many different ways that you could do it you could also even come in and do additional quilting in these spaces if you wanted to right all kinds of stuff that we could do let's go ahead and move over to the stars let's set this aside for a second i have a piece of heat n bond light and i have some scrap fabric that i would want to use as my stars i'm going to bring back the paper template because it does have the tracing template for the star for the mug rug on it and it says right on there to cut three of them out so right on to my heat n bond light where's a good pin that you can see i love it too connie we're just going to trace three stars my tracing skills are not so great today my hands are shaky shaky so they're gonna little they're gonna look a little rough i'm just tracing three of them when we get to the placemat i've already cut out the stars for that mug rug so that'll speed up that portion of the video but if you are extremely new i know i have so many friends here that just started sewing just started making quilts just venturing into the quilting world and so i want to just show you each one of the steps each one of the processes to make this project again the pattern is in the description box but you don't necessarily have to have the pattern to make this project right i just want to trim some of the extra bits around this star so i'm not wasting a lot of my white fabric once the heat and bond is on your fabric you're not going to get all of that off so here's my scrap white fabric we're going to lay that fabric pretty side down so we are fusing our stars to the back side of the fabric just like this yeah i love my stretchy pants and it doesn't take very long for that heat and bond to adhere and then you got to let it cool off before you can cut your stars out so great to see everybody now we're just cutting three stars so what has everybody been working on what have you been working on in your spare time give me a second as i cut out each one of these stars if you have a cutting machine you could send this star right on over to your cutting machine and cut out several and a lick of just a lick of time right did you cut out your stars with the skin and cut uh you can if i were making a whole bunch of these mug rugs then yes i would send them over to the scan and cut there is an svg file that comes with this pattern and you get two different size stars the one for the mug rug and the one for the place mat but since i'm just making one mug rug i'm just going to show you how to use the tracing template if i were making a bunch of these as gifts or if i wanted to sell these at a craft fair and i was going to make a whole bunch of them absolutely i'd send them right on over and the scan and cut would cut them out all perfectly several at a time and it would save me so much time i've already cut out the bigger stars for the place mat so we won't have to sit through cutting six more stars out i think you'll get the idea with me doing these three for the mug rug so there's our three stars let me get rid of all these little extra bits we're gonna peel back the paper and remove the paper from the heat n bond and your star should be shiny i don't know if you can see that in the light but that's the adhesive left on the back of our stars miss bell uh yeah it's on my etsy it's in my etsy shop and there's a link to the pattern in the description box it'll take you right there but you can find it on my etsy in my etsy shop too so there's our three stars that didn't take that long we're gonna move this right on over to our pressing board make sure that you can see that there you go and i'm just going to put these stars right into place and we're going to fuse them just like this remember if you're going to put a traditional binding on your mug rug you want to stay away from like a quarter inch away from your edges so that you don't actually bury the tips of your stars when you do your binding i'm just going to try to line those up just like that and we're going to fuse them right into place heat n bond light is not permanent you can sew through it but if you're really new to quilting and you're intimidated by doing applique you could get the heat and long heat heat and bond words are hard today heat and bond and the rib package and then you don't have to sew those at all they're done so there we go this is the front of our mug rug we just have a few things left to do to finish this up but i'm going to take a sip of my tea oh it's so great to see y'all carol you've been working at your happy at home quilt blocks yay all right where is my backing fabric one of the cool things about your projects uh you could add a traditional binding to your mug rug let me tell you how much you would need for a mug rug this size it is written on the first page of the pattern if you want to make a traditional binding for this mug rug you'll need 40 inches of prepared binding i like to cut my binding at two and a half inches wide and then fold it in half but you could make your binding as wide as you want you need 40 inches am i buffering mimsy pewee nadine today i am drinking earl grey tea i finally bought some i hope i'm not buffering so 40 inches of prepared binding if you want to do it that way so that's an option if you want to do a traditional binding on this you could also use the back as your binding and so that's why in the pattern i gave you measurements for the backing to be two inches bigger so that you could use the back of your uh mug rug as your binding if you've never seen how to do that i have videos on my channel on how you can use the back as your binding just folding it in half one time and then folding it onto your project just like this oh you can't see that because it blends right in there's videos on my channel if you want to learn how to do that today i'm going to do something totally different i sometimes like to finish my mug rugs with a zigzag stitch all the way around and you can do that right or you could put let's see you could put your mug rug down like this and you could put your backing down just like this and then you could sew a seam all the way around making sure to leave an opening so that you can flip it right side out so there's all different kinds of ways that you can finish this project and that is actually the way that i'm going to finish the placemat when we get to the placemat before i do anything though i want to go ahead and stitch down these stars but when i do i want it to also serve as the quilting so we're going to stitch the stars and quilt the stars all at the same time i think i'll also run a stitch of quilting maybe here and here just to add an accent it's already quilted but i like the look of being able to see the stitch line and that's just me so many options for this i'm just going to use a straight stitch on my sewing machine thank you pauline yeah i thought it would be helpful to walk you from the very beginning right i actually have a gray thread in my machine ordinarily i would probably use a white one to do this i'm going to set my machine up on a straight stitch i'm going to increase the stitch length to let's see on my machine i'm going to go with a 2.8 you might want to test out your stitch length on your machine because they're all different and now i'm just going to do a straight stitch on each one of these stars all the way around let me there we go that's going to sew down our stars permanently and quilt our mug rug at the same time the star will have a raw edge on it that's okay though just rotating the mug rug around here and there like this like that like this nice simple shapes just a bunch of different angles you'll be rotating the mug rug around sewing down our second star now you could have done this before you added your backing fabric if you wanted to rotating and our third one and i'll just trim all of these loose tails here in just a minute rotating almost done there we go now because we quilted this as we made the mug rug technically you don't have to do any more quilting i'm going to go ahead and add some quilting lines just two straight lines on either side of this red strip because i like the look of it and because we're adding the back after i want to go ahead and secure the backing in place with those two quilting lines as well you don't have to it's just an option so now i'm just going to do a straight stitch right close to the red striped fabric in the white and then i'm gonna come back down at the other side now we can trim off all of these little extra did you just stitch off and on the edge i sure did miss connie i started right at the very edge and i went off the edge a little bit however if you're using this extra bit of fabric hold on a second if you're using this extra bit of fabric you probably don't want to stitch off the edge you want to just come right to the edge and stop so that none of your stitching is going to be showing in your binding i'm going to trim this all off nice and clean and not use the extra bits as my binding for this project let's go ahead and do that and then we'll trim off all of the extra bits of string again you could make a traditional binding and bind your mug rug with it you could finish it just like we're gonna do with the place mat lay your backing on top and sew around all four sides and then flip it right side out you could use this as your binding or you can do what i'm going to do i'm not going to do the whole thing but i'm going to show you what i would do and i like to do this for some of my mug rugs or smaller art projects it's just one more option that i wanted to show you i like to trim off my backing after i've done any quilting that way if there's any pulling towards the middle with my quilting i know that my backing if i do it and wait until the end and do it is not going to shrink and expose my batting on the back side okay so you can see there's my quilting and just trim off these little extra threads got fuzzies and we can trim these thread tails just like that isn't she so pretty and you can see a little bit of quilting on the back you could use a thread that blends into your backing fabric so it's almost like invisible but still there or you can use a contrasting thread and just treat it like another design element of your project hello everybody oh goodness miss ella they won't let you in goodness i hope you keep us updated please keep us updated on that all right so we talked about several different ways to finish the edges i'm going to show you one of the things that i like to do and i'm not going to do the whole thing because i think that's going to take a little bit of time but we'll do two sides so that you can see how it's done i'm going to switch my setting for my machine to a zigzag stitch again you're going to want to play with your zigzag stitch adjust your width and adjust your length for each one of your projects right test it out on some scraps before you start sewing i'm going to tell you what i set my machine at but that doesn't always necessarily mean that it's the same on your machine so always say experiment with your stitch before you start on your project i'm using a zigzag stitch i'm going to make it 4.0 for the width and a 2.4 on the length it's going to be a little bit wider and uh that doesn't necessarily mean that that's what's going to work on your machine so keep that in mind then i'm just going to go around the whole entire edge with a zigzag stitch you know what let's that didn't take that long let's just go ahead and do all four sides didn't take that long so let's talk about this zigzag stitch for a second that i just used i used a wider looser zigzag stitch i still have raw edges that show in between all of my stitches if i wash this using this wider zigzag stitch i might get some fraying on my ends and i kind of think that that would be cute like shabby chic little frayed edges i sometimes like that with my projects and i think it would be really cute for this if you want less chance of your edges fraying but you want to stitch your edges instead of doing a binding you might want to use a zigzag stitch that is closer together so there's less of the raw edge exposed okay i kind of think it would be cute if the raw edge frayed a little bit sort of like a rag quilt you know how those do the little frayed seams i think that would be cute for this project and i wanted to show it as a possibility come in closer please i can't really move my camera but let me show you let me move that closer and it might not be very focused oh it's not that bad though is it there we go so it's a very loose wider zigzag stitch again if you want less chances of a frayed edge but you want to try this to finish your mug rugs then use a zigzag stitch that is closer together but look how look how fast that was right versus doing a traditional binding or um using the back as your binding which are all excellent ways to finish this project too so i think that's really cute of course i have some strings and some fuzzy bits that i would clean up but uh yeah so that's the mug rug and that's how you can make the mug rug or the placemat without paper piecing and just using scraps to fill in all the positions on your patterns you could use a blanket stitch you could do that as well my zigzag was uh 4.0 the width and 2.4 on the length that doesn't necessarily mean that your machine is going to look like this but give that a test on some scraps and see you might need to make some adjustments because all the machines are different ella says i hate binding binding is not my favorite thing to do so when i have small projects like this this is sometimes how i will finish them if i want it to be a more finished edge though like i've done some mosaic um little art quilts about this size i will go a couple times around the edge or do a stitch that is closer together to give a really nice finished edge to my project and then there's really no chance of the fraying like what would happen with this stitch being this wide sherry says she loves doing binding thank you thank you everybody but guess what we have one more project to do if you want to stick around i'm going to show you the paper piecing portion of this project we're just going to take a breather for a second i think this mug rug is so cute think of all the things if you have a fourth of july event coming up or um you want to make a gift for somebody you could applique someone's name on this and give it to them you could do some embroidery on this all kinds of things you could do with this y'all are so sweet y'all are so sweet thank you so that's the mug rug without paper piecing now i want you to put your thinking caps on if you've never done paper piecing before because that's what we're gonna do next jerry making placemats and doing binding traditional binding on your placemats is perfect perfect practice yes you get to those corners really quick versus on a quilt right you get lots of practice doing the placemats that's good so there's our mug rug i'm gonna put that out of the way let me clean up a little bit clean up these scraps they're all going in my scrap basket right there i save all that stuff the stars will fray too miss connie uh the stars will fray too however a little bit less because before we cut out the stars we applied some heat n bond light to the back side of them uh with our shapes and so the star fabric does have that adhesive which helps it not fray as much but eventually if you were to wash this mug rug a few times i imagine that that raw edge might fray over time let me get a sip of tea and then we're moving on to some paper piecing who all has done paper piecing before have you done paper piecing yeah miss rachel you'll just have to go back on the replay on the replay i'm going to try to put some timestamps in the description box so that uh you can skip if you just want to make the placemat you can skip all of the beginning to the place map but uh yeah you have to go back and catch up if you want to miss pat i hope you have an awesome day hope your day is awesome no paper pacing no paper piecing nope not really sherry's done her koala paper piecing valerie's done a little bit mimsy has bill you haven't done paper piecing connie has not done paper piecing i do my um i do my paper piecing a little bit differently so that i can reuse my paper template over and over and over again there are several different ways to do paper piecing a lot of them include sewing through the paper but i do mine a little bit differently linda you've you're having trouble downloading the svg file uh is it not downloading at all that's the first time i've perhaps i've sold several of the patterns since yesterday that's the first time i've heard what you can do miss linda is send me a message on etsy and this afternoon i'll go over to etsy and i'll get your email address and send you the svg file through uh email sometimes etsy messes up the files in the transfer process i don't know why i don't know why that happens every once in a while they get like corrupt you know something happens and they glitch so if you're having issues with the pattern just send me a message on etsy and it'll be sometime this afternoon and i'll email it to you so we have a lot of people watching that have not done paper piecing and we have some that have i'm going to show you my favorite way of doing paper piecing because i like to reuse my templates i don't want to keep printing printing printing [Laughter] i want to be able to reuse my templates so here's all my stuff but we're not getting to that yet i'm just going to move that out of the way let's bring over the placemat portion of this pattern oh you can't open it yeah you'll want to open the svg file with whatever program operates your cutting machine like uh canvas brother canvas workspace that's the program that you would open the svg file with absolutely if you just try to click on it and open it it's going to either look funny or you're not going to see anything at all so um yeah go to your cutting software and open it there susan where would you get letters to cut out for names well i know a lot of cutting softwares if you're using out if you're using uh cutting machines come with fonts i do have a couple of kits in my shop for applique letters different different styles of letters in different sizes but i'm not the only one who offers those so look around look around on etsy and pinterest uh do a google search for templates for applique letters but you can check out my etsy shop if you want i always feel bad just plugging that in there but or you can draw your own or you can create your own in a program like word print them out and trace them you could do that too or you could use inkscape there's so many different ways so many different ways all right here we go the placemat the placemat is going to be 18 inches wide and a 12 inches tall hello miss vicky 18 by 12. all of this is going to tell you uh some of the things you need like your batting needs to be cut at 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall if you want to do a traditional binding for your placemat you're going to need 65 inches of prepared binding or you can finish it the way i'm going to show you in today's video and then you don't have to make a binding at all which is lovely thank you thank you everybody so there's that uh let's see the backing fabric for your placemat needs to be cut at 20 inches wide and 14 inches tall that's going to give you enough to use as the binding if you want to use the backing as your binding that measurement there 20 by 14 is going to give you enough batting to a backing to use as your binding if you want to so there's several different ways that you can finish this again you could make your placemat just like we did with the mug rug and you don't have to do any paper piecing at all you can make it just like this and it turns out fabulous and it's so much quicker if you want to do the paper piecing then you're in luck because that's what we're going to show you next for the attempt let me scoot this out of the way for a minute because this is a little bit of a bigger a little bit of a bigger pattern the pattern for the body of your placemat is actually four pages we have some cutting to do just like before i want you to cut out on the lines each one of your pieces and i want you to note that there is a dotted line on one side of your pattern i'm going to go through again i didn't want to pre-do any of this because i want you to see what all is involved with preparing your pattern if if you want to get that pattern does anybody have any plans for this weekend so there's one linda you got it i'm so glad so you got the svg and you opened it up yay cutting cutting cutting cutting again if you don't have a cutting machine there is a tracing template right there so that you can use a heat n bond or whatever you like to do raw edge applique with and use a tracing template right there this star is a little bit bigger for the placemat it's just size more proportionate for the bigger placemat miss hazel it's uh it this pattern is not in my dropbox it's actually in my etsy shop there's a link down below in the description box or like i said in the very beginning you don't necessarily have to have the pat the pattern is going to make it quicker you won't have to create your own right and uh especially for the paper piecing if you want to do the paper piecing portion it might just be faster to get the pattern but you could absolutely make your own absolutely or just watch the video and be inspired maybe learn something new a new technique or inspiration for a project that you want to create that is custom and unique to you right all right i'm on the last one i'm taking forever to cut these four pieces taking forever all right i want you to take a look at the box so the paper portion that is labeled number one it's going to tell you the finished size of your placemat but you're also going to see this little grid right here and this is just going to show you the order in which you tape all of these together okay it just shows you right here the order in which you tape them together so it's not really confusing when you have all four of these pieces just laying there so once you have them cut out you're just going to line them up and just tape them right in place like that and like that so great to see everybody today so great to see you again i want to just give a shout out and thank you to my moderators thank you all so much i appreciate y'all so much it's hard enough to focus on what i'm doing and not mess up i don't want to have to worry about any silly nonsense going on in the chat area so i'm really thankful for you and then we have our last piece and once you tape that into place this is going to be the finished size of your placemat ooh happy anniversary happy anniversary i like to throw a couple pieces on the back too just in case just keep those edges together while we're working on the pattern just like that while we have this turned around that's our full pattern for the body of our placement let's go ahead and look at these other pages that are left there's two more pages this is going to be the foundation in which we do our paper piecing these two say red fabric this will be the foundation for doing the ridge stripe right down the middle of our place mat this one once we tape it together says white fabric you're going to make two of these it says right on the pattern you're gonna make two of these not print two you're gonna make one template i'm gonna show you but when you make the strips you're going to make two paper pieced units that go onto your placemat i think i said it better that way we're going to cut each one of these sections out and y'all with paper piecing you really only have to do this one time the way that i'm showing you how to piece these together because you can reuse these templates over and over again so the initial setup you know cutting all your pieces out you really only have to do that one time so that's kind of nice you can just store it in a little folder for the next time you want to make it i think i missed something jadera you're having internet issues oh miss hazel i think i'm i'm pretty sure you could save it in your dropbox i've never done it that way before but dropbox is really like a storage unit for your files right i'm sure you could store it in your dropbox once you download the pattern from etsy all right there's the two white templates there was a dotted line you're going to match up the two dotted lines and it might not show up because the dotted line is really fine but in person you'll see it you're going to match up on the dotted line and tape that together just like that throw a piece of tape on the back so there's the template for your white pieces that go on the front and then let's cut this one out too just letting you know if you have any questions for me if you put them in all caps it makes them really easy for me to go back and find your questions if not i like coming back later on and reading the live chat because i feel like i'm always missing so much by not being able to follow along in the chat cutting cutting cutting cutting cut on the line lisa yeah i'm kind of really glad that once you cut out your templates you don't have to go through this each and every single time you want to make this there's just one initial setup that's it [Music] all right so there's all of our trash we're going to tape this one together too and one piece of tape on the back and there we go that's preparing your templates from the pattern now guess what just like we did with the paper pattern for the mug rug each one of the solid lines on this template here we're going to fold the pattern on the solid line just like this i'm just going to go through find that solid line and just fold the template and give that a good crease it's going to come in handy here in just a minute going through and if you want to make the mug rug paper pieced you would follow these exact steps for that pattern as well try to make your folds as nice and straight as possible on those little solid lines like that i'm glad you only have to do this one time right the first time always takes the longest anybody still making their uh happy at home blocks quilt blocks from the series we did during the shut-in is anybody still working on those coming to the end come into the end just have a few more to fold i'm going to tell you it's worth the time that it takes to go ahead and fold pre-fold your template because as we start piecing all these fabrics into place it's going to make it a lot easier so each one of these are folded we're not going to do the white one to save a little bit of time we're working with the red strip and then for your pattern you're going to go ahead and fold this just like we did with the mug rug right except this one's bigger this one's a lot bigger i always find it easier to fold this way because i can see that line just line it up nice and straight and pre-fold that template that's going to help us mark our batting nice and straight like that hopefully that's straight so much work to do is that straight no that wasn't straight let me get this pattern folded straight and then i'll go through and check to see if we have any questions hopefully that's straighter there we go can you please cooperate paper there we go all right we're all folded could you use adding machine paper uh you could your stripes would be different sizes because let's take a look this is the finished size of your stripe is wrong side of the ruler lisa two and almost two and a half it's two and a half and uh the adding machine paper that i have is only two and a quarter inches wide and by the time you take off your seam allowance you're going to be even thinner than that so you could use adding machine tape absolutely but your stripes are going to be different sizes which is fine right there's no rules there's no rules just scrolling through scrolling through i think we're good i'm so glad you came back miss genie cool that tea is good all right so all of our patterns are pre-folded i showed you a second ago all of my materials i've already cut my batting to size so the batting is 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall i've already cut the backing two inches bigger the backing fabric i cut to where is it 20 inches wide and 14 inches tall that'll give you enough backing to serve as your binding if you want to or you can trim it away but that would give you you'd be able to to do a self binding with that measurement so there's my backing i'm going to put that off to the side here's the fabric i'm going to use for my blue and for my red paper piecing portion here's my stars i've already pre-cut my stars on the star i did sew inside the star let me show you a close-up of that and i don't know if you maybe you can see that because i used a gray thread so you might be able to see that it's just inside the star a little bit maybe you can see it just inside that raw edge i went ahead to save some time in this video and i pre-did the two white strips there's the end of it there it is so this is what we're making that's the paper pieced portion strip for the white i made two of them and we're going to do the red one together so that you can see how that's done ta-da isn't that pretty one of the advantages of paper piecing is i think it gives you such preciseness with your piecing without having to be so precise there's a little bit of freedom and a little bit of leeway with paper piecing because really the foundation of paper does all of the work for you you're just sewing and trimming and pressing right so there's the two white strips i've already gone through we're gonna do six stars for the placement they have the heat n bond and i've already cut them out they're ready to be fused when we get to that part and this is what we're going to do except we're making the red stripe together so i'm going to set him aside right over here and i have some red scraps again at these fabrics i did not give you sizes to pre-cut because i want you to be able to use scraps from your stash and they just need to be bigger than the placement so this is your finished piece that you need and your fabric needs to extend it beyond the edges of your foundation paper okay no predetermined size they just need to extend beyond the edges of the paper and beyond the edges of the position that you're adding them to right all right so here's my red fabrics we're going to move this out of the way so i'm going to have to bring my pressing board back and do we need this anymore no because we've already traced the star okay let me move this pressing board back into place i'm done with the tape i can do a little cleanup and we're moving this back over there we go okay duke i like to start on the left side you could start on the right side there's no right and wrong i like starting on the left side with my positions you could do these in any order you could use all different colored red fabrics you could rotate them the way that i'm gonna do you could go totally scrappy with it if you want absolutely so where's my little glue stick the very first thing i'm going to do is take my glue stick and right in this first thinner section i'm going to add just a little bit of glue to hold that fabric in place the first fabric we are placing pretty side facing up let me figure out which fabrics i want to use for what positions let's use this red fabric my glue is on the template when i lay my fabric down i want it to go beyond all of the lines so just like this we'll trim it up and make it pretty here in just a second i'm just going to cut this off so it's not hanging in the way we're going to dry that just like this my iron was asleep so it's going to take a second are you warming up getting there okie doke we've added our first fabric in the first position this is where it's going to come in really handy that you've already pre-folded all of the solid lines on your template we're going to lay this down so that the fabric is on the cutting mat and we're going to fold back our paper template on that first solid line we're going to take a straight edge ruler we're going to extend beyond the paper template a quarter of an inch and we're going to trim off everything that hangs over that just like that we're going to take our next fabric which one do i want to use next we use this one the next fabric we're going to lay are pretty side up on our let me do this let's use this one so you can see what i'm talking about solid colors are hard when you say pretty side pretty side up and pretty side down they're both the same almost pretty side facing up we're gonna take our template it came on glued come on come on school glue do your job let's put a little bit more on there now we got to do that step all over again do your job glue you have one job that's it let's do it i'm just re-gluing i'm gonna have to re-trim it i'm gonna have to re-trim it because i won't ever get that lined back up accurately so let's re-trim it like that let's bring in our next color lay that pretty side up pick up your fabric and your template the template should be facing you folded up towards you with the fabric just like this we're just going to lay it down onto the pretty side of our next position pick up both of those pieces just like this and we're going to bring this to the sewing machine and we are not sewing that through the paper we're going to actually be sewing right next to that folded edge of the paper template and let me switch over to the sewing machine so you can see that here's my paper template that's where it's folded and here is our fabric extended a quarter of an inch beyond that fold i'm just going to line that up so that my needle runs right next to that folded edge whoops i'm still on a zigzag stitch still on a zigzag stitch there we go straight stitch right next to the paper and from one edge to the other that's gonna allow us to reuse this template over and over again so there we are we're going to open back up this template so we have our two fabrics just like that i'm going to take my glue stick and in the very next position that's open i'm just going to apply a little bit of glue right there we're going to flip over the piece that we just added sorry i have to do it this way i know that's kind of upside down for you we're just going to finger press that right over finger press it nice and flat and give that a press to dry that glue and hold the fabric right where it needs to stay while we're adding the next piece yeah i love using the template over and over and over again so we just pressed that and dried the glue we also pressed that seam at the same time so let's go ahead and flip over to our next line and if it helps you keep track you could mark these like we just did that one we move up to the next fold that's where we're going to fold the paper template just like that we're trimming off leaving quarter of an inch i'll tell you it kind of looks confusing it kind of looks confusing right and when you first start doing it it seems confusing but after you go through your first or your second strip doing this it's all going to click and make a lot of sense and then it'll just become second nature so we just trimmed off the extra we left a quarter of an inch we're going to pick this up our next fabric is laying a pretty side facing up we're going to lay this right down just like that and we are going to take this to the sewing machine and sew right next to the paper fold yeah miss mimsie thank you yeah i uh i prefer when i'm done with a project i don't want to have to do anything else and ripping off a bunch of paper is kind of messy and a little time consuming plus i like to reuse my templates i don't want to have to keep making them over and over again i want to save my printer ink too that stuff's expensive the glue is temporary it's going to come right off and i'll show you that miss hazel here in just a minute let me switch over to the sewing machine that way y'all can see we're doing the exact same thing as just before sewing right next to that paper edge [Music] so that was a big scrap wasn't it bringing it back i'm going to apply a little bit of glue in this next position yeah i was confusing myself for a second i thought i used the wrong fabric but i did not we're gonna flip that over finger press it don't push it and pull it too much just finger press it nice and flat and then give that a press with your iron it'll dry that glue temporarily it'll glue the fabric to the paper just long enough for you to continue adding on your pieces it does the paper comes off in the end all in one piece so there's that seam we're going to flip it over to the back there's lots of flipping back and forth back and forth so we've done the first two seams the very next one i can see that folded edge that's where we are we're going to fold the template right there and cut away leaving a quarter of an inch and then we're going to bring in this fabric here lay a pretty side facing up we're going to bring our template with our fabric and just line that up and we're sewing right next to that paper edge we're going to bring it back over there's lots of back and forth i'm going to tell you it seems like this is a very time consuming project it is a lot longer it does take a lot longer to do this versus the way we made the mug rug but it's so worth it and if you have your stuff set up so that you have a little pressing station here and a little cutting station and then your sewing machine and you're just back and forth it does go by a little bit quicker i used to have my pressing board across the room so for each section i'd have to get up and walk across the room and press there's a lot of seams there's a lot of seams we're going to add glue to this larger section we're going to flip that over just give that a finger press right into place and then press that and dry the glue and press that seam all at the same time so we've done our first three seams we're going to go over to this next crease we'll just make a little mark there so we know where we are we're going to fold the template right on that line and trim we'll bring our next fabric in and i don't need this great big huge piece it's so flimsy to work with let me just cut off a small piece of it right side facing up we're going to lay our fabric down right on top just like that again make sure all your fabrics extend beyond the raw edge and we're going to sew this seam one of the reasons why i really like this method if i'm going to be honest with you too you don't really have to so much worry about being so accurate with your quarter inch seam allowance in order for your piece to turn out perfect i really kind of like that a lot sometimes i just want to sew and i don't want to have to worry about being so precise but i still want it to come out the way it's supposed to paper piecing i'm going to bring that over we're going to flip this fabric that we just added finger press that and press that seam as well then we're going to bring it back we're going to flip it back over next we're on this seam right here so we're going to fold that paper template right on that pre-folded line trim away this extra bit make sure to leave your quarter inch seam allowance for that bit we used this fabric so we're going to bring that in pretty side facing up we're going to lay this right down on to that fabric bring all three pieces over to the sewing machine and sew right next to the paper fold bring it back add a little glue we're just repeating these steps over and over again over and over again that's why i say the first time you make it it might be a little confusing but once you do this a couple times it's just gonna be like second nature you're just gonna be doing it this is almost this is probably a good project for me that i could what have a movie going on and pay a little attention to the movie at the same time bring it back over mark the next seam that's the one we're folding back trimming bring in the next fabric pretty side facing up lay it down onto the pretty side facing up and sew that seam bring it back over add your glue in that little section flip your fabric over finger press and then give it a press so great to see everybody here today so great to see you we're bringing it back over we're gonna mark that next seam and you don't have to mark it it just helps me show you where we're folding because you can't see the folds so much in the paper but it also helps me keep track of where i am in the progress trim away leave your quarter inch seam right there bring in your next fabric pretty side facing up line it up and just sew that seam yes uh this will be on my channel you can come back uh once the video is processed i do plan on putting some um timestamps in the description box once the video processes and i have time to do that so that you can skip around in the video to see the different things that we're showing but it will be on my channel lisa cape and quilts and you'll be able to watch it on the replay and the pattern is available in the etsy shop but also if you watch the video you might be able to make these projects making your own templates mr dara i am not using uh the steam when i'm pressing to dry the glue not for this project it's a dry iron it has water in there but i'm not the steam is not on hook it up we're bringing it back now we're going to add some glue in the next section which is this larger section that is where i taped this pattern together and my tape is from the dollar tree so i'm going to try to be really easy i don't want to melt that tape it is not the world's most expensive tape i'm gonna flip over this section we're gonna finger press that down into place and i wanna press that seam and then kind of skip where i used that that tape and dry the glue right above it then we're going to bring it back our next fold is right here we're going to fold that up and that's nice and easy because we've already pre-folded that template in the very beginning when we cut it out we only have to do that once let's see which because i'm doing mine in an order let's see it's the lighter red you don't have to do yours in any specific order you could do it all in scrappy different red fabrics right i don't need a long strip all my glory over 200 people watching holy moly hello everybody that makes me so nervous that makes me so nervous oh sandy said you're getting better at not catching your paper when you're sewing your strips me too thank you all for watching thank you so much if you do clip the edge of your paper it's okay if you do clip the edge of your paper with your sewing machine a stitch or two that's okay you'll still be able to use your strip we're adding glue to this next section right there or we're getting closer to the end we're gonna flip it finger press that and press and dry that glue press that seam thank you bill thank you so much thank you to my awesome moderators oh i didn't want to have to worry about the chat any craziness in the chat that saves me so much stress bringing it back i'm going to mark our next line right there so you can see it's just a lot of back and forth flipping trimming gluing sewing repeating next we're bringing in this one pretty side facing up the fabric that you're adding everything goes on top and we're sewing next to the line now when i go through we're gonna add glue to the next section can you yeah you can see that there there we go flip it over just do a little bit of finger pressing and dry oh i feel like i'm going to lose my voice dry that glue take a sip of tea oh yeah sandra come back and watch the replay we've done we did the mug rug the easier and less time-consuming way we're doing this pattern with the paper piecing portion for the placemat so yeah you'll have to come back and catch it on the replay [Music] flipping trimming which one are we adding now the red and i know that if you've never done paper piecing i know it looks a little confusing right i want to encourage you if it looks a little intimidating i want to encourage you to at least try it one time make one project with paper piecing and give it a good solid effort try because i think even once you get past the method and the steps over and over again i think you're going to actually enjoy it i think you might like it it's intimidating to try but really it's super simple it's just a lot of back and forth steps we're getting close to the end marking that next seam cut that extra bit off let's say we're using this one for the next we're adding that one adding the glue to this bigger section we only have three more pieces to add we're going to flip that over finger press and then press oh yeah i love my quarter inch ruler i love it so much this is a 12 inch one but it actually came as a set of three where's my other one i always use the longer one but it came with this uh six inch one and there's a smaller one somewhere where is it it's like a four inch one i use this one all the time i very rarely i'm too clumsy with my cutter to use the small ones but if i'm just drawing lines i'll use the smaller ones i'm a little clumsy shaky hands with my cutter so i tend to use the bigger one that's the next seam we're flipping over but y'all seen my great big straight ruler right for doing smaller work like this back and forth this little quarter inch ruler is a great space saver we're adding this one then we're adding glue to that next empty space right there we're gonna flip this right over press diana you said your husband says our quilt store is the crack store for quilted i want to go to your quilt store i want to go there [Laughter] marking that next team right there what if you get off the paper down the street trying to figure out exactly your question miss connie so i can answer it the best way you mean not cutting that the seam straight what if it gets off is that what you mean i want to make sure i'm sometimes i wish this was zoomed so we could talk back and forth because i always have a hard time sometimes reading the questions and knowing exactly how to answer call me girlfriend just call me we'll talk about we'll have a chat about it oh we're getting down to the end we have one more piece to add we're going to press this one into place and then we have one more little strip to add so showing you this method this is the piece for the placemat the mug rug if you do the paper piecing for the mug rug it is smaller pieces but because you're using a foundat a paper foundation to piece them it looks like it is way harder when you're done with the mug rug if you paper piece it it looks so intricate but just following this same method you're able to do accurate tiny piecing without a lot of hassle and i love that and this is our last piece that we're adding i've already done the two white strips for the placemat yesterday so that's going to save us some time oh we're at the end we're at the end i'm going to open that up i am going gonna glue this piece for just a second because we're gonna use the paper template to trim this up nice and pretty we're gonna flip this red section over and press that too and i'm just going to let that cool off for a second get a sip of tea while that cools off so that is the paper piecing portion and i really love having the video here on youtube because like i'm a visual learner and when i see someone do it over and over again and then i go do it and then i'm a hands-on learner learning that way it's so much easier showing you versus typing it all out in words when i'm i probably make it way more confusing when i type it out then i do showing you in a video and then you have the video to come back to and revisit you could have the video on right next to you while you're making it and pause it and do the next step right thank you mimsy is that cool yeah that's cooled off so now we're going to flip this right over we're going to take our longer straight edge ruler we're going to trim off everything that hangs over the paper template now because you might actually end up trimming bits of your paper template over and over if you're going to keep making these over and over again this paper template needs to be a three inches wide okay and 18 inches from side to side so if you're trimming off bits and pieces of your paper template you can still use your template and not have to go through making another one just know that when you trim this up it needs to be three inches yeah three inches wide and 18 inches long and you could just use your cutting mat to square it up or if you're like me and you don't actually cut your template out nice and straight because you have shaky hands all of that extra bit goes away and then we're just trimming right to the edge of our paper let's flip it around thank you so much diana thank you so much that's awesome yay thank you for flipping this around now here comes my most favorite part of doing paper piecing my most favorite part is removing the paper template from the back you just give it a few little tugs like that and it just separates from the paper you might have little string residue pieces left on your paper template and just like that i clipped that edge that's okay my template's still there and now we can reuse this template over and over again to make more placemats right we don't have to keep printing it off and cutting it out and taping it together it's ready to use for more strips so don't throw that away just store it away so here's the reveal scoot this over here is our finished red strip just like that isn't that pretty i'll bring in the two white strips i did yesterday to save a little bit of time and these are offset a little bit from the red one just like that and like that isn't that pretty nice and pretty seams smaller pieces but using the paper foundation really takes a lot of the stress of being so precise with your quarter inch seams right so now that we've done the paper piecing portion for these strips we're just following the same exact uh let me move this back just a little bit the same exact method that we did for the mug rug oops i think i need it no i didn't i'm throwing stuff all over the place same exact thing that we did for the mug rug let's go ahead and mark our positions on the batting getting ahead of myself getting ahead of myself thank you so much hazel y'all are so sweet you know that you do not have to do that right you could get the pattern and have a pattern for what did i do with my pattern oh here it is i'm getting distracted and have a pattern and that way at least you have something that you can keep and use if you uh if instead of doing the super chat if you wanted to that way you'd have something a pattern so we're going to line this up just like we did with the mug rug this is going to mark our sewing lines and the straighter you are the straighter your seams are going to be mine might not be that straight on this one we're just going to mark that we're going to flip this one up i'm going to straighten it up just a little bit because i did not fold it straight and it still doesn't look all that straight that's okay i'm okay with that there we go and we have one more so now we don't need the pattern anymore we're going to take our glue stick there we go yeah that does not look straight at all that's okay i'm okay with that we're gonna put glue and the wider section that's the section we're adding the blue to again in the pattern i did not give you uh specific measurements to cut this blue piece out i want to encourage you to use up your scraps it just needs to be bigger than the position we're adding it to by half an inch on each one of the sides so we can scr square it up and trim it up when we're done right so let's just go ahead and lay that right down into place we're just going to flatten it out a little bit and now we can bring this pressing board back in we're going to dry that glue that's going to hold our blue fabric right in place to our batting gluing it right down drying that glue so there's our piece ooh that's hot that's hot just like with the mug rugs we're going to be folding right on that line that we added with our paper template we're going to flip it around and turn that batting up and fold that batting right down right where that line is we're going to trim the extra bits off of this blue it's not all going to fit into the camera it's not all going to fit we're going to line up our ruler with the edge of the folded batting and give ourselves a quarter inch hanging off the edge just like that let's fold this back over see nice and pretty raw edge let's bring in our white paper pieced portion or our strip that's going to go first just like this now notice these strips do go exactly right to the edge so just keep that in mind when you're placing them down make sure they're lined up with the raw edges of your batting just like that line up the raw edge of your strip to the raw edge of your blue fabric hold that in place bring that over and sew that seam with a quarter inch seam allowance all right here we go with the seam allowance you could pin this white piece down if you wanted to do that if you felt more comfortable pinning that white strip into place you could do that i'm just holding it down i'm trying to keep everything lined up as we go so there's our white strip we're going to add some glue right in this next section and it doesn't have to be a lot we're just using it as liquid pins for the minute we're going to flip over this section right here and just finger press that see how cool that is and this strip is cut so that now it automatically has your quarter inch seam so we don't have to trim that anymore we're going to dry that glue and that strip right into place and press that seam all in one thank you yes we're making a flag project i thought about this while we were doing the uh happy at home blocks i think i mentioned i was gonna do a patriot patriotic project coming up i've had this project in my head for a couple of months now so it's nice to actually have some time to sit down and make it alright so there's our white strip guess what we don't have to trim that we don't have to trim it we're bringing in our red one we're going to match up the raw edges just like this and this and that you could throw some pins in there if that's going to help you hold that in place i'm just going to bring it over be a little crazy and we're going to sew this seam so there's that strip that's added we're going to add glue into this next section we're going to flip that strip over and finger press it into place just like that and we'll dry that glue yeah i think the paper piecing is time-consuming it's time-consuming but uh it's so worth the effort because i think that's so pretty with all the little seams in there now we can bring in our last white piece we're going to turn that pretty side down onto the red one match up these seams from edge to edge and sew that seam do you give to join etsy no you can sign up for etsy for free it doesn't cost anything to create an etsy account nice and straight all the way down if you can that's our last seam for the day yay we're gonna add glue to this section just to keep that in place like that flip that piece into place and dry that glue once you're done with this you'll want to go ahead and trace out your stars there is the tracing template uh right here it's a little bit bigger than the mug rug star it's on the first section of the large paper template that's the one you're going to trace and you're going to get six stars ready make sure that glue is nice and dry oh that's hot she's hot she's hot i'm gonna flip this over so that you can see a good chunk of the table you can use your batting to go ahead and trim up the raw edges all the way around if you need to we're going to go ahead and trim off all of the extra little bits that are extending beyond the batting on the back side sandy said she uh she hand traced the stars for the mug rug and then she used to scan and cut for the stars for the placemat wow what a difference thanks for the svg fox you're welcome uh i have shaky hands y'all i have essential tremors most days my hands are pretty good every once in a while especially when i'm nervous my hands get really shaky so uh yeah cutting stars out if you're cutting a lot of them wow the skin and cut just makes them so precise doesn't it i guess really any of the cutting machines really help if you have shaky hands like me cut out nice and exact pieces there we go all of our edges are nice and clean [Music] there we go isn't that pretty we're going to take our six stars we're going to fuse those right into place i'm using heat n bond light i've already removed the paper but if you've never used heat n bond light you can go back to the mug rug portion because i show you how to trace your template and cut out your stars remove the paper and then we're just fusing them right into place i have to get them all spaced out though if you're using a traditional binding to bind your placemats you might want to stay away from the very edge because your binding when you flip it over or you sew it to your placemat might cover this cover your stars right you want to try to stay away from the edge enough to allow for that i don't know why i'm having a hard time lining these stars up focus lisa focus [Music] it doesn't have to be exactly perfect lisa scoot it in there we go i think that's good i think it's a little too low hold on a second sometimes i can be a little bit too much of a perfectionist let's move that up just a little bit a little bit and a little bit okay we're going to hit that with the iron and just adhere those stars into place and hopefully i don't move them around moving them over there we go i'm just gonna place my iron right on there thank you everybody now to save some time in today's video i'm not going to go through and sew these six stars with you i'll come back after the video's done because we did do that portion when we made the mug rug right i showed you exactly how i sewed them down with a straight stitch but you could also put on a free motion foot and free motion stitch down your stars one thing's for sure is because we used heat n bond light you do want to stitch these down or they will come off eventually unless you use a permanent fusible right and then you don't have to sew them at all right let me get a sip of tea sip of tea i have my backing fabric this one i'm gonna do a little bit different so in case you missed the mug rug and you're gonna have you're coming back to watch the replay on that later we cut our uh backing fabric let me pull those measurements out again at 20 inches wide and 14 inches tall what that's going to do is allow for you to center this and then use the extra on each one of the sides as you're binding if you wanted to do that that would be pretty quick and easy and very pretty right a little binding all the way around just like that isn't that pretty or you can make your layers and trim this off and do a traditional binding and if you're going to do a traditional binding with this size placement you're going to need 65 inches of prepared binding you could trim off all the edges and do a little finishing stitch like this except being a placemat you might want to wash these one day i would do it really close together so that the raw edge doesn't fray so much right or you can do it this way and i'm going to flip the pretty side right down onto my backing just like that i'm going to throw a couple pins in here just a couple to keep that in place keep it from shifting i'm going to bring this to the sewing machine and i'm going to sew a straight stitch and probably you could do half an inch away from the edge i usually do a quarter of an inch away from the edge but you want to make sure you leave a gap big enough to turn this right side out so let me pull up the sewing machine so you can watch me sew around the edges this is another fast way that you could finish this project quarter inch let's see i usually like to leave my opening on the side but that's just me so i'm going to start over here on the edge i'm going to stop right there and do some back stitches break that thread and move down here anywhere just a big enough hole to turn it right side out i have an easier time leaving a little bit of a bigger hole i'm going to start stitching again and i'm going to do some back stitches to lock that in place and now i'm just sewing right off the edge i'm going to lift my needle up and turn it and i'm starting off the edge sewing all the way to the other edge uh if you like using a walking foot you might want to put your walking foot on you might find it a little bit easier i tend to always use this same foot and we have one more side left to do coming back to the cutting mat we can take these pins out we're going to trim these edges one more [Music] time i'm trimming right to the edge of my placemat i do want to leave a little bit of extra in the area where uh where i'm going to turn that i just have an easier time turning if i do that so like that it just gives me a little bit of extra to tuck up in the opening it gives me a cleaner finish when i do uh projects like this where i'm turning them right side out flipping and trimming there we go i think that's the last trim for the day i'll just leave all that mess right there now we're going to flip this right side out yes mimsy you are a great cheerleader you really are thank you thank you everybody for giving me a thumbs up for this video it really does help my channel a lot when you do that when you comment when you share the video when you give it a thumbs up all of those things are so so helpful this is my least favorite part of any project i don't like doing this part and if i would have thought about it i almost probably would have put the stars on after this part what do you think this just feels like such rough treatment to all of our hard work but that's okay i'm getting fuzzies all in my face that's my least favorite part getting it all turned right side out oh let me give it a good shake see if that helps now we're going to poke these corners out just reaching in with my fingers i actually meant to trim off the corners first if you do a diagonal trim where your corners are that would actually make your corners a little bit more pointy and i've totally forgot to do that that's okay thank you gail thank you catechip hello how are you how are you yep they're not going to be as pokey as they usually are because i forgot to trim the extra little corner before we turned it right side out but that's okay she's still gonna be really pretty all right there's my corners i'm gonna flatten it all out like this like that i've got batting fuzzy bits all over the place we're going to turn the opening just like that let me bring this pressing board back over one more time one more time we're gonna go ahead and press this placemat nice and flat we're gonna press this opening so that longer bit that we left longer i've just tucked that right in and it stays so much easier when i do that i have such an easier time and then once you do that you'll see the extra bit hanging over the edge of the top of your placemat that needs to go inside too so we're just going to fold that right in i like being really honest with you all my project could be absolutely perfect up into this point and this is usually when the messiest part of any project for me is folding in the opening when i do my projects this way if there's any one part of it where it's a little messy it's usually the opening i don't know why i struggle with folding in the opening and pressing it that's just me now i'm going to go ahead and press all of the outer edges of my placemat just like this like this and at this point you have a couple of options for sewing closed that opening you could hand stitch it shut or you could go around the whole perimeter of your place mat with the top stitch just a straight stitch all the way around the edge of your place mat let's bring it in just like this goodness there we go there we go you could go in and do a top stitch right close to the edge and that would uh stitch closed your opening at this point what i still have left to do is to sew down the stars but i'm gonna do that off camera if you missed the mug rug portion i did show where i used a straight stitch and it quilted my stars at the same time that i stitched them down to the front of the mug rug so you can go back and watch that if you missed it i'll do that off camera because there are six of them right so this is just another way that you could finish these projects just like i showed you but don't you think they're so cool paper piecing no paper piecing i like them both this one's a lot more consuming when you're doing all the flipping and the trimming and the sewing and the gluing this one you could make a bunch of these in one crafting session pretty quickly pretty quickly we're not having to pre-cut lots of pieces we can use our scraps because we're foundation piecing it does all the hard exact work for us right paper piecing and not paper piecing i like them both are they going to fit both in the screen [Music] no they're not we're going to layer there you go layers so are there any questions are there any questions up into this point either this method or the paper piecing method maybe you have a question about the pattern and how you tape it together uh vicki we heard from chantel just a few days ago she was in the zoom and she's working and the last time i talked to her it was hot where she lives and can't it was hot she was hot so be thinking about her as she transitions back to work actually virginia goes into phase two tomorrow so many of us are transitioning one way or another back to work right thank you all for being my cheerleaders mimsy i appreciate you so much i appreciate you and the thumbs up is awesome the thumbs up is awesome uh and i do appreciate that however you don't have you know you don't have to do that you don't have to sandy right well surely i did not invent this method of paper piecing but when i came across when i came across this method versus sewing through the paper method several years ago i fell in love with it because i'm a little bit of a tight-wide doll i would rather buy fabric than printer paper and when i'm done with this portion i don't want to have to remove the paper and then get the paper bits all over my lap because usually i would do that while i was watching tv at night and it made a huge mess huge mess that i'd have to clean up and uh so when i came across this method i fell in love with it because you print it once you get it ready once and you just keep reusing it vicki i'll let machanto know that you were asking about her florida does phase two tomorrow too oh carol chantel messaged you this morning she is good she just went back to work yes just in time for fourth of july yep what i like about this too is you could hang this up on your wall as a decoration right ooh gayle you're in phase three but the other counties around you are still in phase two hazel i am i am really careful i would rather have the money to spend on some new paints or some markers that i haven't tried or some more fabric or maybe a pretty thread that i haven't tried you know or maybe something that i know i'm going to be running out of versus paper and thing you know uh i i do think i do know that miss chantel is going to continue making the blocks in her off time i do know she has said that what type of batting did i use on these this it was an 80 20. it's really thin so it's uh cotton and poly 80 20. and i like it because it's it gives you the quilting look but it's not extremely thick thank you everybody thank you vicky thank you everybody it's been a lot of fun spending time with you today i've had this project in mind for quite some time couple months since right close to when we started the blocks you see behind me which i still need to do something with uh but yeah i've had this project in mind for a good couple of months and so i'm really glad that we could spend some time making these two projects and just keep in mind the pattern is in the description box but i really hope that uh well at least this version right that you could make this without the pattern right you could make your own pattern for that or if this is not a project you want to make i'm hoping that demonstrating all these methods was helpful and you could incorporate those skills into a totally different project right you could do that you just pack them away in your skills toolbox for later on so next week next week next thursday i'm going to go ahead and put myself out there thursday i'm going to write it down too so i don't forget next thursday i don't know the date where's my planner i can't get up because i have stretchy pants on next thursday at 12 p.m eastern standard time we're gonna come and we're gonna do some fun at watercolor painting on a fabric i'm going to go over some results that i have found that helps make watercolor paints you know watercolor paints the little palettes we're going to use watercolor paints on the fabric and uh do some fun whimsical stuff i'm gonna share a couple patterns that i found online that are free we did i've done a giraffe and i did an owl and uh so grab some fabric go ahead and pre-wash it because i found i did find that pre-washing your fabric does make a little bit of a difference you got a week to pre-wash some cotton muslin it doesn't care if it's white or tan or beige or whatever color maybe it's pink or yellow uh but go ahead and pre-wash it and get it ready for next week i will have a file in the description box next week to dropbox uh so you can paint the same thing that i'm going to be painting i will uh as soon as i figure out what that is that we're painting next week upload a file to my lisa cape and quilts facebook page if i can do that share the link in my dropbox so that you can print it out before next week if you want to try and paint along with me i'll put it in creative crew too i'm writing all this stuff down because i'm committing myself to stuff that i don't want to forget about and uh and watercolor paints i do think you should probably have a fabric medium there's all different brands out there the one i like the most is the gac uh golden fabric medium i'm gonna change this camera there we go this is my favorite this is what i'm gonna use but uh fabric medium is fabric medium right yes there will be no need to be uh bob ross or any of those talented people who can draw and paint we're going to do some tracing and i'm going to give you a template it'll be in the description box but i'm also going to upload some files on facebook so not today and not this weekend but it'll be early next week it'll give you a couple of days to print it off if you want to or you can just google that's what i've done if you google color book pages free color book pages make sure you read the terms of service you know when you download stuff uh because it might be free for you to make projects for yourself all day long but if you want to sell stuff make sure you read the full description when you're downloading because they might be giving you personal use only but a lot of the color book pages you could make these projects and sell them or put them in quilts that you want to sell so if you don't want to do what we're doing the image lots of free images on the googles that you can print out pam has a question let me go up if you use the permanent fusible do you need to sew down the stars still no uh miss pamela i'm so glad you asked that uh we talked about it when we made the mug rug but i used heat n bond light that does have to be stitched down for it to be permanent uh but the heat n bond products it comes in a red package that's the permanent one you could use that and then just fuse your stars right into place and there's no more sewing that's it is permanent so that's kind of nice right that would save a lot of time i just have not stitched down these stars because it's a little time consuming and we've been here for a good while but when we made the mug rug i did sew these down so if you missed that part make sure to come back on the replay and revisit that section just making sure we're not missing anything [Music] i think we're good vicki i have not sewn all my blocks together i said in the last video i was gonna leave it up for a good week trying to make up my mind for sure i i've just been looking at it there's still only one section that's together that's the one i showed you in the video that's that little section there's together i've just been staring at it this week i've just been staring at it yes so uh next thursday 12 p.m eastern standard time we're going to have some fun creating there will be a free template if you want to create what i'm creating in that video if not you can print out your own and do all kinds of stuff i'm just hoping to spread and inspire and share ideas what type of paint it'll be watercolor paint you know the watercolor paints uh they come in a little palette and they're dry and you activate them with water this is a winsor newton travel palette but this is not the one i'm going to be using i just don't have that one close by watercolors you know they're hard you add water to them any of the watercolors will do we're adding fabric medium to set them in the fabric and make them permanent one of the okay so before we go if you are a controlled artist everything has to be uh controlled ex precise and exact and perfect watercolor painting is a little bit more haphazard and free and whimsical and playful and you'll have to experiment with it you're either going to love it or you might not like it at all fabric paint tends to grab a little bit and not run as much but the using watercolors on fabric is really whimsical and soft and watercolor it looks like watercolor so it's just another fun thing to experiment with if you've never tried it yes loose it's very loose and whimsical i wish i had my things next to me i would show you but stay tuned to next thursday and until then i hope you have a really blessed week uh i hope that you uh have been inspired i hope you pass it on and inspire someone else i hope you have fun creating i would love to hear from you in the comment section if you're just joining in i love you too i really do i feel like i'm missing something every day since we're not live every single day now i'm always like what am i forgetting to do go live yes sandra you can trace your own pattern onto the fabric absolutely i hope this video was helpful i hope it gave you several different ideas of different ways you could do the projects too right so many options so many choices i cannot wait to see you next thursday here on youtube i'll see you over on creative crew group way before then though i love you so much thank you so much for spending some time with me today bye everybody you
