hello everybody happy friday oh i think you're gonna really enjoy today's video hello everybody let me know if you can hear me if i sound okay i'm gonna just uh refresh this chat so that i can see everybody's uh questions and comments and just to let you know we are live so if you're watching this on the replay and you're like oh all the chatty stuff feel free to skip around it's okay to do that and i'm gonna try to keep the chatty parts until after we're done with today's demo y'all this is something that is so much fun guess what we are doing embroidery without an embroidery machine and we're making some freestanding lace snowflakes today there's so much you can do with this you can make christmas ornaments you can applique this onto other projects which let me just say as we begin that the snowflakes and the other lacy things that we're making today we're going to actually use those things to make a christmas stocking christmas stocking from two fat quarters next friday so if you're not subscribed click that subscribe button and check all and uh the little notifications so you get notified when we're live i want to thank my moderators thank y'all so much i surely would not want to go live without my moderators here on youtube so thank you so much for keeping an eye on the chat hello everybody hello everybody so yeah today we are using the regular sewing machine chances are your regular sewing machine can do this i'm going to talk about how to set it up when y'all see how i've set up my sewing machine you're gonna like i did not know you could do that but yeah you can do that okay and so we're gonna get to that here in a minute hello everybody it's so great to see you all right just a a couple disclaimers as we get started today y'all i'm not an expert at this this is just something that i enjoy doing and i want to share it with you i don't know all the things about embroidery without an embroidery machine so my encouragement is if you found this video interesting and it has sparked an interest with you do some searches on youtube because there's lots of creators who are far more knowledgeable in this technique than i am i'm just sharing a passion with you all right so yeah we're gonna say that and um i was gonna say something else i don't know all the things oh another disclaimer you might find yourself losing track of time if you start doing this the other morning i set up my machine to do this and before i knew it it was a quarter past three in the afternoon so you might lose some time because it's so much fun and uh yeah so you might lose some time do it on a day where you have nothing else to do [Laughter] all right y'all i'm gonna switch over to my cutting mat we're gonna go over some of the things you need and uh so just to let you know if you leave the live chat and you open up the description box there is a pdf that has two snowflakes we're going to be making one of these snowflakes together in this demo but you can print that off for free i do have a link to another one where we have some more advanced templates that you can uh that you can try right this is uh a little bit more simple and this uh is a little bit more advanced right so this is in my etsy's shop it is two dollars and fifty cents if you wanna get that i have made some so you can see what they look like but this one is free and you'll also see a supply list in the description box of all the things that i'm getting ready to show you so you can take some notes just open up that box jot down the things that's going to get you set up to do this technique oh dari's putting me on the tv so i'm going to be big in dari's house all right so let me just show you some of these examples right before we get started uh i've made lots of snowflakes so there's one let me put them on a white background so you can see them a little bit better there's a snowflake isn't that so pretty here's the snowflake that might be my favorite there's a snowflake now some of these uh you won't see a template for i was in the experimenting phase right so here's one that's pretty too right let me scoot those off here's one and here's one and here's one you can see i was losing track of time that day i got a little carried away because i was just having so much fun here's uh one of the christmas trees here's two of the turtle doves that i did and i stitched them together to make one ornament isn't that gorgeous and then uh the snowman and the bells aren't they so pretty and i have a christmas stocking that is done but i'm waiting to show you that until the end of the demo because there's a part of the technique that we're going to be using a wood burner for and that one is ready to go right aren't they pretty aren't they pretty so those are my examples i've had so much fun this past week [Laughter] so uh let's go over some of the things you need to do this you'll need a tracing template and y'all you're not just limited to christmas ornaments you could make freestanding lace that you embroider to handkerchiefs doilies collars of your shirts uh all kinds of stuff so you're not just limited to ornaments there's so much you can do with this technique you can download this for free in the description box you may want to use a free motion foot you'll see mine is over here and not on my machine you'll see that here in a second but you might find it helpful uh to get good tension with your machine using a free motion foot today i'm going to be using a smith's universal needle and the size i'm using is an 80 12. don't uh use the 80 12 smith's universal needle as the law you might need to use an embroidery needle or you might need to use a universal needle that is smaller or larger right it all depends on the needle size you're using or the thread you're using and your machine right some machines prefer different threads and you might need to change your needle to accommodate the thread that you're using today i'm using a floriani embroidery thread it's already loaded in my machine floriani it's a gorgeous thread it's an embroidery thread it has a sheen to it you can use metallic threads you can use all kinds of threads but that's what i'm using today so uh that's my needle we're going to be using an embroidery hoop chances are you already have one of these laying around right this is i think one two three four five a six inch hoop that's going to accommodate most of the ornaments right but you might need to move up to a bigger hoop you really want some space when you center this design in your hoop you want some space around that design so that your foot is not getting close to your hoop right so the size of your hoop will be based really on the size of the design you're working with so i have some hoops here today i'm going to be using some non-woven uh water soluble stabilizer i bought mine in sheets right so my sheets are a little bit smaller uh you might want to go with the roll or larger sheets because if if i wanted to bump up the size of my hoop you can see i'm kind of kind of at my limit there but uh these are like eight inch sheets that already come pre-cut the next time i purchase it it'll probably be in a larger roll and then i'll cut off the piece that i want to use right so this stuff once you get it wet it will dissolve it'll just disrupt disappear uh i have a wood burning tool here so i've got my wood burner uh this one came with all kinds of different tips but you really just need a tip on there that is going to melt away any of the extra tulle or organza you'll need a piece of glass and this is just a piece of glass out of a picture frame uh we're going to be using that towards the end of the video you'll need a piece of styrofoam now if you ever watched my design wall video this is my portable design wall it's just a piece of styrofoam inside of a pillow case so this is going to come in towards the end of the demo and what else hold on a second i left my stuff over here i thought i was all set up and ready to go i was not now the technique that i'm showing you today is a little bit more on the beginner side of doing this free motion embroidery on your sewing machine there are ways that you can do this without using a tool or organza however when you do it without these things you have to make sure that all of your stitches interlock right i would say using a tool or organza would be really helpful if you've never done this before because this gives a place for all of your stitches to lock so even if you don't lock in all of your stitches to each other your ornament is still going to keep its shape once you dissolve the water away all right so i have uh this tool here this is like a white tulle i have this baby blue sparkly tool i think we'll use that today i have this pretty blue organza and i have a white organza i didn't bring it over so i have used both my favorite is with the tool because it makes the ornament or the lace a little bit more see-through and kind of disappears in your ornament right or in your lace the organza let me just show you some examples of the two right before we get started so if you're like well i wonder which one i don't have either so i'm gonna go buy something let me show you some examples of both alright so the doves have organza you can see the sheen in between all of the stitching this snowflake has organza and you can see the sheen in different places this snowflake was done with tulle this snowflake was done with tulle a gold tool but it kind of disappears even though i've gone in with the heat tool and melted some of it i did leave some of it uh let's see this one here okay so this is a really good example right here the same ornament this one's done with tulle and this one's done with organza i wonder if i have something dark here we go this might be a better example see that organza tool so you can do it with both you get a different result each way but both of them help lock in all of your stitches and it keeps the shape of your ornament what brand is a good uh wash away stabilizer uh i think most importantly when it comes to this technique veronica what you need to pay attention to is non-woven you can find some that is like transparent and kind of shiny and it looks like plastic unfortunately that one doesn't hold up so well with this technique so finding a non-woven it almost looks like fabric see that it looks like a whole bunch of hairs in there this type of stabilizer holds up better we're throwing a lot of stitches a lot of needle punches with our machine in a dense area and so you'll find that this type of stabilizer works much better than the clear uh plasticky looking types of wash away all right is that everything i think that's everything we're gonna go ahead and get started okay so which ornament are we gonna do let's do this one down here so let's get started i'm going to bring in a pen and one of the things i did want to mention when you're tracing your design you kind of want to center it in your wash away right and you'll be able to see through it really good i'm using a marker to trace my design and you could use uh like watercolor pencils you could use um pencils pens all kinds of stuff the main thing is you don't want to use a marker that is really juicy because uh when you get this wet it does uh lose its strength and it starts to disappear right so if you use a marker make sure it's one that dries really really quick and doesn't put a lot of ink into your stabilizer so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to trace our design right on the washaway i'm going to try to go through that pretty quick just tracing like this you could make up your own designs that would be a lot of fun i do recommend starting simple so these snowflakes are really great because you're working with a few different shapes right but it's not you could make this snowflake as basic or as intricate as you wanted to right you don't even have to trace these little loops in there if you didn't want to you could just do the basic shape of the snowflake but we're going to go ahead and put these shapes in i imagine we're going to be doing this demo for about an hour so if you have to leave before we're done you can just come back to the replay and watch it you'll be able to fast forward through stuff then and let's go ahead and put the circle in there all right so i have my design traced you can see it right on the stabilizer and then i'm going to cut myself a piece of tulle because that's what we're going to work with today i have some beautiful blue floriani embroidery thread already in the top and in the bobbin and i like to use the same color the same thread in the bobbin so that the both sides of the ornament look exactly the same right one side looks exactly the same as the other so you might not be able to see it because that tool is pretty transparent but it's just laid centered right over top of everything let's go with this embroidery hoop yes you do not need an embroidery module to do this you'll see i wrapped the inner hoop with a little bit of that uh shelf liner from the dollar tree that just helps keep everything nice and tight inside my hoop right so we're going to center this into the larger ring of the hoop and then we're going to push this inner ring right down into it this is probably the most frustrating part of everything for me even when i do embroidery on the embroidery machine is getting everything pretty snug in that hoop we're going to tighten it up some and make sure that that tool is laying nice and flat in there without really over stretching it right we don't want to stretch it so that when we unhoop it it draws up right this is tool and stabilizer i'm hooping them both in the hoop and i'm just going to tighten that up you want it nice and snug and then i like to burp burp my hoop which just means i'm going to push that inner ring so that it just comes out the other side and that's going to help this lay nice and flat on the bed of my machine right it's also going to snug up that stabilizer and tool really nicely and then because uh this is kind of messy i usually do come in and just trim this stuff off you don't have to do that but i like to do that now we can use the hoop to help guide this underneath of the sewing machine right so that's nice all right so let's talk about the sewing machine before we switch over here's what i have done i have lowered the feed dogs on my sewing machine some of you might not be able to do that and some of your machines out there still don't like to give you good tension when you lower the feed dogs so you don't right but i have lowered the feed dogs on my machine you might have a plate that covers them up and you can certainly use that i have set my stitch to a straight stitch but i've lowered the length to a zero alright and we might play around with the tension if we notice anything going a little wonky with our thread and i have no presser foot on my sewing machine at all so it's going to look a little funny but i want to show you okay when we switch over to the sewing machine i won't be able to see your comments and i might have already missed some questions so let's just take a pause if you have any questions up until now or if i've missed your question let's go ahead and just take a minute so that we can make sure that you're on the same page to this point thank you all so much for uh for joining me today i'm glad y'all caught the live vicki said designs from coloring books yes all right i'm not seeing any questions come through let me get a sip of water i feel like i need to slow down some one is that if you're making lace to add to a garment or some clothing do you use tulle or organza one i think is a personal choice uh the tool some of the tools are a little bit stiffy stiffer and scratchier right and the organza i don't want to say it feels like plastic but uh it has a different feel to it as well so it's gonna depend on where you add the lace is it touching your skin is it going to be irritating it also depends on the look you want you can do this without either one and so i do encourage you to watch some videos because some people uh don't use a tool organza at all all right i do feel like this is more beginner friendly one thing you do uh need to realize is that the tool and organza is a man-made product so whatever you're adding it to you need to pay attention on how you care for your item because it is like uh like plastic or polyester it will melt under heat so anything you add lace to that contains either one of these i would probably not put it in the dryer so you might want to consider that okay let's go ahead and switch over to the fun stuff i think we've covered everything else here all right so one of the things let me see if i can bring myself up so that you can see me whoa there i am i didn't mean to do it that big the choice of going live there all right so uh one of the things you might notice when we switch over here i don't have a presser foot on my machine i've removed it all together i even removed the little screw that holds the presser foot on that's going to enable me to get a little bit closer to the edge of my embroidery hoop one thing i will say is that the needle could be moving really fast you don't want your fingers anywhere close to the needle that's why having the embroidery hoop not only helps stabilize your work but it gives a place for your fingers to rest because if you do this there's no protection against your fingers right so keep that in mind you could certainly use your free motion foot however that takes up some space and you might not be able to get close to the edge of your embroidery hoop so yes no presser foot on my machine lisa said should you use embroidery thread always not always i encourage you to use different kinds of threads and experiment you might find that you like different threads better than others one reason i like embroidery thread is because it is a polyester thread it's a little bit stronger it's actually made for embroidery machines it's made for stitching fast so it does hold up really well in this technique and it has a nice pretty sheen to it right so it's going to give your lace a little bit of a sparkle to it is tor tool the same thing as those fluff fluffy bath wash scrubbers are made from ah i've never made one so i'm not sure maybe somebody else has a good answer for that i'm not really sure i have no idea all right y'all so again i have the blue embroidery thread floriani in the bobbin and i have it in the top and right now my tension is just set on auto we might have to play around with that uh a little bit and uh one thing i want you to notice is that whatever embroidery hoop you use you want to make sure that it fits underneath your needle see how the needle just comes above it uh one thing you might be able to do is turn your hoop sideways like this to fit it in and then once it's in you can lay it flat you might also if you have a foot on your machine raise up on your lever bar and just raise it up a little bit if you're having a hard time fitting the hoop underneath that area so you can just raise it up just a tad bit see that you might need to do that to get everything fitting under there or you might have to use a different hoop right so check your hoop and then at this point it's just like thread painting we've talked about that a lot uh it's just like free motion stitching bird is going to have fun and stitch out this ornament and i don't think there's any rules like starting with the outside first and then filling in at least with using the organza or the tool like i said these stitches are locked in so um yeah we're ready to get started i'm going to let's see we'll start right in the center i'm going to lower the needle and i'm going to raise it back up and we're going to bring up that bobbin thread see that we're going to bring that bobbin thread right up to the top and then lower the needle right back in and we're going to hold on to both of these threads as we get started and even though i don't have a presser foot on my machine i'm still lowering the uh presser foot presser foot bar because without lowering it you're not going to have the tension right lowering that presser foot bar creates the tension that you need to create your stitches so don't forget to lower it and now we just start stitching right i'm going to take a couple little stitches just to lock this in place and then i'm going to move away from those threads so i can cut this and i can not worry about holding on to that and here's the fun part okay right now i'm set up to do a straight stitch you can use a zigzag stitch to really fill in areas really quickly we'll switch over to that here in a little bit but right now i'm just going to start with a straight stitch oh and i'm going to lower my attention because of course my thread just broke we're alive we're live this is real life i'm gonna re-thread my machine i've just lowered my tension so now we're at a negative two and i'm gonna re-thread that needle real quick and we're going to pull up that bobbin thread one more time and lower the needle and lower the presser foot bar all right i can tell that already wants to behave a little bit better so if you're having issues if you're all set up and your thread breaks on the top try lowering the tension a little bit the cool thing about using the tulle or organza is you can make this as ornate and delicate looking as you want right so i just did a single line around that circle you could stop there because that single line of stitches is locked into that tool right but you can also make your lines as bold so you can go around that as many times as you want to sort of thicken up that line this is just using a straight stitch and going back and forth back and forth short little strokes all right so there's my little circle i'm just gonna travel until we reach one of these shapes if you go off the lines it doesn't matter that's going to go away when we wash this out so there's my first one i'm gonna just travel along that circle until we get to the next one so we'll travel over to the next one that looks so pretty and i really don't think in this light you can see the sheen of that embroidery thread which is really sad because in person it's just so shiny and pretty all right we have two more of those shapes to do all right so there are the little like teardrop shapes inside my ornament now because i like my ornaments and i'm going to show you right here to have a little bit of a bolder edge to them i'm going to hold off on outlining the outside of my snowflake just yet but i do want to go in and fill in all of the negative space the space between these shapes right so for that i'm going to switch over to a zigzag stitch you could certainly use your straight stitch let me show you could create little loops we'll do that first i just want you to have fun and experiment with the different stitches in your machine we'll start off with doing little loops doing the straight stitch so you see how i just filled in really loosely in between that shape i'm going to travel over to this shape and do the same thing we'll travel over to this one and do the same thing and of course you could make it as dense or as loose as you wanted to with your stitches right so that's using a straight stitch and just doing little loops and you can see uh what kind of look you would get with that so i'm going to travel right over here and now i will select a zigzag stitch you can play around with all the different widths uh the wider your stitch the more it's going to jump from one side to the other the smaller your stitch the more uh the less it's going to jump from left to right right arm pardon me our needle is going to jump from left to right with this stitch keep that in mind if you have a free motion foot on you don't want to select a stitch that is any bigger than the whole of your free motion foot because you'll break a needle right in the very beginning right i'm going to take a sip of my coffee all right so i have a zigzag stitch and i'm going to set it to a 3.0 for my width remember the needle jumping left to right you can see it would really fill in this area really quickly if that's the look that i wanted to get i'm just going to keep it a little bit on the looser side but you can see that stitch looks a lot different than this stitch right we can even travel using your zigzag stitch you just want to be mindful that the needle is still moving left to right and uh so you'll want to rotate your hoop so that you get a straight line right so now we've jumped right over here i'm going to do the same thing with this stitch so there's that one we're going to jump over to this other empty spot so one of the cool things about using the tool we're just going to take a pause because i've already mentioned this but a lot of you have seen this method done but without using the tool or the organza so after you've watched it a little bit you kind of understand that uh the tool is locking all of these stitches in place if you did not have the tool or the organza in the hoop and you were to do this you'd have to be really mindful that all of these little hoops connect some way in some fashion or else when you wash away your interfacing those stitches are not connected to anything and your ornament will this turn into a ball of string so especially if you're just starting this technique that's one reason i do suggest using the tool or organza right okay so now we have these empty spaces on the edges of our ornament i'm going to increase my um [Music] we'll do a a zigzag stitch i'm going to increase it to a 4.6 let's just go with that i'm going to raise this needle up because it's jumping from left to right right i want to make sure i control where it's going all right we're going to fill in these empty spaces around those teardrops see how quickly uh the wider stitch really fills in that area so you can get different results by turning your hoop and letting that zigzag stitch go in different directions right i want to jump because i don't want to fill in that area i'm going to jump right on over we're going to fill in all of these empty spaces just the same exact way we would jump right over to the next space oh my goodness that embroidery thread is so pretty i wish you could see that in person we're just going to take a break real quick i'm just going to make sure we're still going wanda i would experiment i've only really used the straight stitch and the zigzag stitch one thing to keep in mind is those decorative stitches your needle jumps around in different places right to to form that stitch you need to make sure that whatever stitch you're using it's not going to interfere if you have a presser foot on right you don't want to break those needles another thing that to think about when choosing different stitches in your machine the stitch is formed by the feed dogs working in conjunction with your presser foot moving the fabric along so if a stitch requires two stitches forward and then it backs up a stitch and then it goes to the left to form that stitch correctly you probably have to have your feed dogs on in a presser foot to engage the movement so your stitch is really depending on the machine that moving your fabric around and in this technique we're actually moving at the fabric ourselves without the aid of the feed dogs so i don't know that you would get those really intricate decorative stitches but you could experiment and see what happens all of these jump stitches we can cut out once we're done and we have one more shape to fill in all right so all of our snowflake is filled in of course you could keep going if you wanted to and fill it all in you could do all kinds of stuff at this point you could be done if you like that look i like to give a nice little finished edge to my uh to my lace so i'm going to stay on the zigzag stitch but i'm going to lower that width down to uh like a 1.8 it's just going to move that needle ever so slightly from left to right right and i'm just going to outline my ornament i do go back and forth a couple times you can really see right there the difference that the outline makes on the shape of the ornament versus the ones that don't have that right you can see my needle my presser foot bar is touching that hoop so you could just rotate your work around so that now you have space so just a little bit left to go and there we are we're back to where we started the outline i think that is gorgeous and we're going to call that ornament done okay i'm gonna go ahead and lift up my needle and uh i'm gonna lift up that bar in the back just to allow for that hoop to just slide right out and i don't usually use my thread cutters when doing this because my thread cutter leaves a little bit of a jumbled knot on the back and i want a nice clean finish so see this is the back and it is just as clean as the front see that we're going to switch back over to the other camera so that was a lot of fun isn't that gorgeous so at this point we can unhoop it yeah amanda the outliner really gives it a nice pretty outside shape right really defines the shape of it of course we have some jump stitches then i'm going to go ahead and just trim away the thread tail on the back in the front a couple of jump stitches probably could have done that easier before i unhooped it all because now it all just blends in right all right so there we go it is unhooped and at this point i'm just going to trim away a lot of this extra right and you can really be as detailed with the trimming you can really get in there but the thing of it is is you don't really want to cut into your stitches so i'll leave a little bit of extra around my ornament see that but we're going to go ahead and get rid of a good majority of this right off the get-go and you know what i forgot to set up before starting the live today i meant to have a nice little bowl of water next to me i didn't do that that's all right you just don't want to cut into those stitches i'm trimming away the tool and the wall the wash away at the same time i wonder if i have a container i could go put some warm water in so there's my ornament at this stage right the next thing we're going to do is wash away that stabilizer there's a jump stitch let me cut that off i wonder if i could do that what i usually do is just bring this right over to the sink right and i don't use really really hot water because all of this thread is polyester the tool is polyester or plastic whatever that is it's synthetic and heat could affect your thread and your tool organza and shrink it up but i use a little bit warmer than just tap water right and that just helps dissolve the wash away a little bit quicker you could just use cold water and of course the more you rinse this out uh the less your ornament is gonna hold its firmness with the shape right i like to wash mine out so that it just disappears but it still feels a little bit sticky like you don't see the stick the stabilizer there anymore but it kind of soaked into the thread and acts like a starch really and it's going to allow your ornament to hold some of its shape right so you would just bring this over to the sink and wash that out or put it in a bowl i think we're going to skip that because i did not bring over a bowl of water and yeah so just wash out that stabilizer what you're gonna have left and i'm gonna bring this over is your ornament with just the tulle or organza left and when it's still wet i like to pin mine to a piece of styrofoam to really get that shape in whatever wash away is still left in that thread it's going to give it the shape and hold the shape of the ornament so here is the christmas stocking and when it was wet i just pinned it uh to a piece of styrofoam so now this is all nice and dry i'll just take those pins out i don't know if y'all do any like delicate crochet or uh needle tatting tatting to make ornaments same concept you're just gonna help block it and uh let it dry so that the shape holds true to your lace so that's what you need the styrofoam for in the straight pins and at this point we have a little bit of organza that's what i used on this one sticking out beyond the edge of my ornament all right we're gonna clean that up we're gonna clean it up first let me make some room y'all i have a lot going on on this small little surface let me make some room how would you attach this to another project okay so let's talk about the turtle doves for a second see those turtle doves they are connected so the first turtle dove i did just by itself and the hoop i stitched it out i removed it i trimmed away the extra and then i stitched out the second turtle dove right and while this was still in the hoop the second turtle dove was still in the hoop i brought in the first one and i overlapped them and i stitched right over top of that joining these two turtle doves together with a nice clean join next week i'm going to show you how you can take these and attach them and actually treat them like applique right we're going to stitch some of these onto a christmas stocking next week but you would basically treat it like applique i would use the same thread that you use to make it to attach it to your project so that it just blends in right let me get this uh wood burner plugged in and heating up because that's gonna take a second make sure everything's nice and tight yeah sheila said i can definitely see how these would be addicting to make yeah i lost track of time [Music] there we go i'm just going to let that warm up and i have my piece of glass right here i'm going to put a piece of paper underneath of it because i think that'll help you see but you certainly want to do this part after you've washed away your state your wash away and the ornament is nice and dry right and you're going to do this either with the organza or the tulle it works the same way we're going to let that heat up and we're basically just melting off that edge right and then you could even have fun and go in and melt away other parts of the ornament as well so like this one i left all completely solid except for the stitching this one i left some of the tool in there but i melted away the center circle right this one i melted away all the bigger circles inside but it still has tulle in all of the solid parts of that and then the snowman i was just experimenting melting out some of the parts of the design see that so you could get creative and have fun melting away i will say the wood burning tool gets really really hot i have shaky hands so i have to be really careful with it and it does smell a little bit not horrible but i don't think you want to be hovering over top of it breathing in whatever you're melting off anitra this is a wood burning tool but it came with a whole bunch of different attachments right it's got the wood burning tips for it it's also got soldering tips and it also has a knife so you could turn this into a hot knife if you like to cut your own templates from template plastic so it's got a whole bunch of different tips and uh yeah 14 bucks 13 something on amazon right we're just going to let this warm up sherry says i love my wood burning tool me too i have an old one i don't i just had it out the other day i have an old one i've had that thing for like 20 years oh theresa said maybe having a fan on to blow the little melty little things away from you would be helpful i do think that that would be helpful i just don't like to hover over top of it okay i'm gonna see if this is warm do i even have that plugged in i do not we would have been here for five hours hold on a second [Laughter] five hours it would have taken five hours i was totally distracted getting ready for today's live so now we have to wait for it to warm up again now we have to wait again because it wasn't even plugged into the wall this one does have a little adjusting to set the temperature right now i have it set on 350. we'll see how it does there it can go up to 450 and as low as 200. we're going to start with 350. i think that that's pretty pretty hot wow i did not have my water and i didn't even have that plugged into the wall keeping it real yes what's alive without a few mishaps right i don't know i think if everything went off perfectly from start to finish i would be like is this lisa's video what something's up with lisa i love you too so now we're just waiting again when i say it smells it does smell a little bit i've smelled worse things like i don't know if you've ever used clear acrylic polyurethane that stuff is smelly that smells worse than this but it does have a smell you might be able to use the tip of a glue gun i'm not sure you know those get really really hot i have not tried it yeah take the glue out of it and see if that doesn't get hot enough i would say you could use a candle with the flame but we're not even going to go there because i have no control with stuff like that and i would melt my whole ornament but a glue gun that tip might get hot enough not a hundred percent positive all right let's see if it's hot enough now yes it is all right it's still going to be hard to see because i used an organza i don't know why i have a hard time saying that and tool i see that little little divot right there actually let me take this away you might be able to see a little bit better yeah okay so i'm still working on the glass right you don't want to do it on your cutting mat and at this point you're just going in and basically erasing all of the tulle organza away from the edge now i've used a polyester embroidery thread and it doesn't melt exactly right away but if i continue to hold that tool along the thread i would melt my thread too so i'm just using really quick motions right along that edge just so i don't melt that thread see the little smokies coming up from that i don't know if the camera is catching that but that's the stuff that you don't really want to hover over and breathe see how it cleans up the edges though trying to hold it over something dark the tool works the exact same way it just disappears and melts off just like this organza i should have left a couple of examples to do so that you i just had so much fun the other day it was all i could do not to melt this organzo away the other day too you can see those little smoky things coming off see that i do think having a fan on you know would help all right so just like that we erased all of the organza away from the edge of our ornament or our lace you could have a lot of fun going in here and erasing and creating you know a totally unique look as well but that's the concept that's what you're gonna do at this point and now you are done it does seal it as well it does seal it sherry makes a good point it does leave a little residue on the tip of your heat tool so if you have a little piece of sandpaper don't do it while it's hot but once you unplug this and let it cool completely off a really fine grit sandpaper would take that residue off also uh i have had and worked with like a wet paper towel and as i'm doing it especially larger sections like the center of these snowflakes when i go around the outside it tends to sort of want to cling to the tip of your heat gun sometimes i'll just take it and just wipe it on a wet paper towel and that'll clean it up some while you're going but once this is completely cooled off if you use a really really fine like uh triple zero fine grit sandpaper you can clean this off a little bit right you don't want to do it while it's hot i want to said it needs a hanging loop too you could definitely stitch in a hanging loop i don't want to put a loop on these because i'm going to applique these onto a project and i don't want that loop there but you could stitch on a hanging loop while you're stitching the ornament and then hang this up on your tree right i'm actually going to treat these just like an applique next week linda said and when he asked where his soldering gun went off to you just shrug your shoulders and walk away that's why i like to have my own tools because i don't want to give it back right so that's mine could you add a loop at the top and burn off the center for a hanging loop you certainly could again i don't want to do that because i i don't want to alter the look of this particular one but you certainly could burn a little hole in there and create a little hanger sylvia thank you so much for moderating uh as you leave thank you so much all my other moderators thank you all so much it's so nice to be able to turn away from the conversation and not have to worry about any kind of shenanigans going on right so in case you joined after we got started i'm gonna scoot that away because it's hot i have unplugged it though i'm just gonna go through the different ships and give some really good examples again you're not limited to christmas stuff you could do all kinds of shapes all kinds of shapes and at this point i feel like we can just take our time right and chit chat about it a little bit i really do like the turtle doves i think those are gorgeous there we go and here's the one i made today of course i still have to rinse out the stabilizer i kind of really like that filled in tips of the snowflake i think that's really pretty it's different than all of these so when we're done with the live i'm going to wash this out and i'm going to pin it to dry if you want to see this finished i'll post a picture on my lisa cape and quilts facebook page and if you haven't followed me there there's a link in the description box and later on you can see what this looks like after it's washed out and cleaned up right i'll post a picture of that there's also a list in the description box of all the things you need to get set up to do this right and you can just take notes and jot down all the stuff there's a link for the free snowflakes there's also a link for the swirly little ornaments that's two dollars and fifty cents in my etsy shop if you want to get those i will say the snowflakes are pretty basic and beginner friendly but once you graduate from that these swirly little designs are so much fun uh busy beaver already done in the description box there's a link to the exact same heat tool that i'm using today with all the tips i want to ask what is the baby soft tool called i remember seeing that in joanne's i'm not sure does anybody else know judith you can do this you can do this tommy's on her way to the studio to get started tamara hey tommy just got hers on amazon yeah i think you know what it's gonna do uh and i always say more practice the better right don't expect great great results when you first get started with anything but the more you do it the more relaxed you get i i definitely feel like you should be relaxed going into this i think you're gonna get better results and i think you're gonna have more fun but yeah this would give you so much really great practice with free motion barry has uh uh sherry has the bear factory in full swing i was wondering about that sherry i was gonna message you uh two days ago i was like i bet you sherry has got christmas orders full and swing is there a link for the turtledoves yes there is in the description box you'll see it'll say a link to free snowflakes and that's this sheet right you get the two snowflakes that you can experiment with they're gorgeous and then you'll see a link and that is for this page right here it brings you over to etsy two dollars and fifty cents it's a one page pdf download and uh it has the two turtle doves right one facing left and one facing right and you can just make one of them you can make both i made both and i connected them it's so pretty so pretty yep so the swirly ones that would be these the tree uh this was very very complicated i was like no let's let's make that a little bit more simple so my tree i put swirls in it instead of all of this which was fun but it took forever and i was like no let's simplify it and just do some swirls of course you could just do the outline and fill it in with whatever you wanted to write and that's one of the things that i love about this is that there's no rules and you could do whatever you wanted you don't have to trace these inside shapes you could make the whole thing solid if you wanted to so i'm kind of excited to see what y'all do with this as always if you make this project uh i would love to see your pictures sharing on the creative crew is a great way to share what you're working on and to share pictures and if you try this and if you have questions creative crew is a great place to get help right sherry i'm all for a chat you let me know when sheila said the tree is her favorite the tree is really pretty isn't it juanita said the snowman is gorgeous i kind of wish i didn't burn out certain sections of the snowman although i do like the look on some of these with it burnt out all the way i'm kind of wishing i hadn't done that so i might because it's so much fun go in and burn it all out and just have the snowman but i do love the design of the snowman the stitching yes sweet let's talk this afternoon anitra said she likes the way the snowman looks anitra with your free motion skills oh i you think these are pretty i'm going to i'm just going to brag on anitra for a quick second because she has sent me pictures of her free motion quilting and it's gorgeous if you want to check it out okay go to my channel sorry anitra i'm going to put you on the spot for a second anitra did a craft room tour video here on my channel scroll these next week in the evening yeah check out anitra's tour video sherry said party time actually i'm such a workaholic here's a conf i'm a huge workaholic it takes everything i've got sometimes just
