peace our world is troubled longing for hope many despair your word alone has power to save us make us your living voice [Music] christ be our shine in our hearts shine through the darkness christ be our light shine in your church gather today [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit and good morning to you all you're very welcome as we gather to celebrate this mass and i welcome also those who join us via our parish radio and webcam facebook live and shalom world we come together as brothers and sisters in jesus christ we gather in his name and in his presence and today again we're touching base with the church of many former centuries ago as we celebrate the feast of two great saints sent cornelius and saint cyprian cornelius was bishop of rome pope cornelius and the third century and it was a time of great persecution and he was exiled and died in exile saint cyprian was born in carthage and became at 35 years of age he converted to christianity and was became a bishop and he was a great defender of the faith and he pleaded on behalf of people who had abandoned the faith but because of persecution and wanted to rejoin and he always pleaded that they should be allowed to rejoin without too much difficulty but when he was faced himself with denying the faith because of persecution he wouldn't deny the faith and he said to his executioners i'm a bishop i'm a believer i'm not going to abandon my beliefs so get on with what you have to do and so he was executed we have that great treasury in the church of these wonderful men and women whose example is held up to us as saints and as martyrs we who are called not to die for our faith but rather to live for it are privileged let us prepare ourselves to celebrate this mass by remembering how sometimes we need god's understanding love and compassion in our lives as i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and what i failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have christ have mercy christ of my savior lord have mercy lord have mercy o god who gave saint cornelius and cyprian to your people as diligent shepherds and valiant martyrs grant that through their intercession we may be strengthened in faith and constancy and spend ourselves without reserve for the unity of the church through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit not one god forever and ever amen a reading from the first letter of saint paul to timothy do not let people disregard you because you are young but be an example to the believers in the way you speak and behave and in your love your faith and your purity make good make use of the time until i arrive by reading to the people preaching and teaching you having you a spiritual gift which was given to you when the prophets spoke and the body of elders laid their hands on you do not let it lie unused think hard about all this and put it into practice and everyone will be able to see how you are advancing take a great care about what you do and what you teach always do this and in this way you will save both yourself and those who listen to you the word of the lord thanks pray to god praise the lord praise the lord hallelujah the lord praise the lord hallelujah [Music] i will give thanks to the lord with my whole heart in the company of the upright in the congregation [Music] great are the works of the lord studied by all who delight in them full of honor and majesty in his work and in his righteousness enjoys forever [Music] he has gained renown for his wonderful deeds the lord is gracious and merciful praise the lord praise the lord hallelujah [Music] he provides food for those who fear him he is ever mindful of his covenant he has shown his people the power of his works in giving them their heritage of the nations the works of his hands are faithful and just all he perceives all trustworthy they are established forever and ever to be performed with faithfulness and uprighteousness praise the lord praise the lord hallelujah [Music] he sent redemption to his people he has commanded his covenant forever holy and awesome is his name the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom all those who practice it have a good understanding his praise enjoys forever praise the lord praise the lord [Music] gospel hallelujah [Music] god in christ was reconciling the world to himself and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled [Music] [Music] and the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord one of the pharisees invited jesus to a meal when jesus arrived at the pharisees house and took his place at table a woman came in who had a bad name in the town she had heard he was dining with the pharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar of ointment she waited behind him at his feet weeping and her tears fell on his feet and she wiped them away with her hair and then she covered his feet with kisses and anointed them with ointment now when the pharisee who had invited jesus saw this he said to himself if this man were a prophet he would know who this woman is that is touching him and what a bad name she has but then jesus took him up and said simon i have something to say to you speak master was the reply and jesus said there was once a creditor who had two people in his debt one owed him 500 denarii and the other 50. they were unable to pay so he pardoned them both now which of them will love him more the one who was pardoned more i suppose answered simon and jesus said you are right and then he turned to the woman simon he said you see this woman i came into your house and you poured no water over my feet but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them away with her hair you gave me no kiss but she has covering she has been covering my feet with kisses ever since i came in you did not anoint my head with oil but she has anointed my feet with ointment for this reason i tell you that her sins her many sins must have been forgiven her or she would not have shown such great love it is the person who is forgiven little who shows little love and then he said to the woman your sins are forgiven and those who were with him at table began to say to themselves who is this man that even he forgives sins but he said to the woman your faith has saved you go in peace this is the good news of the lord to your lord jesus christ powerful gospel really that episode of jesus being invited to the pharisees house i love the gospel lesson simon a pharisee invites jesus to dinner a woman known by all to be a sinner shows up and demonstrates great love for jesus simon assumes that jesus cannot be a legitimate prophet for if he did he would know that a sinner was touching him then jesus asks simon a question and asks about the creditors but i'm very struck by the next question he asks him he said simon do you see this woman the facts of the matter is that simon didn't see the woman didn't see a human being made in the image of god he just saw a sinner there's no doubt she was a sinner but people are much more than their sins the saying every saint has a past and every sinner has a future is so right yes she was a sinner there is a phrase that thank god we don't hear so much these days the phrase about someone living in sin used as if the rest of us aren't we're all sinners but as jesus says of that woman in the gospel her sins her many sins have been forgiven her because she loved much that's the antidote for our sins to love much jesus has taught and shown that god sees every human being every human being as a beloved child and that is our challenge also do you see this woman he asked we have to be careful to see every individual as a child of god not just to see the label traveler asylum seeker refugee unemployed or whatever nobody is a label to god nobody should be just a label to us the people who serve us in the shop the people who collect our refuse the people who keep our streets clean people whose status has been greatly elevated in this pandemic as frontline workers but we have to see them as individuals and as people and as beloved children of god that's the part and parcel of following jesus christ we glory in the dignity he bestows on us as a brother or sister as a child of god ourselves but the challenge in that is to see in every other person an individual child of god and to not to be judgmental to be able to acknowledge that god touches the hearts of all and just as he asked that pharisee who invited him to dinner do you see this woman please god we can answer yes if jesus asks us do you see this person and on this feast of cornelius and cyprian we ask for their intercession as we place these petitions before almighty god we pray that pope francis will enjoy a good rest today following his pastoral visits to hungary and slovakia we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray that throughout the church there will be faithfulness to the teaching of the apostles so that all can deepen their faith in jesus christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for those with little or no love in their lives that the woman of the gospel may give them hope we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and we pray for all those who join us this morning virtually may you continue to know the presence of god alive and heroic lives as we do our best to follow your son jesus christ through whom we make these and all our prayers [Music] as i bow my head in prayer take this day make it yours and fill me with your love [Music] i give her [Music] to my lord [Music] to pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and good of all his holy church receive we pray o lord the offerings of your people in honor of the passion of your holy martyrs saints cornelius and cyprian and may the gifts that gave them courage under persecution make us too steadfast in all trials through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for the blood of your blessed martyr cornelius and cyprian poured out like christ to glorify your name shows forth your marvelous works by which in our weakness you perfect your power and on the feeble bestow strength to bear your witness through christ our lord and so with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim [Music] of your glory is [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of love together with francis our pope dennis our bishop all the clergy all the religious all men and women who work in your ministries remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles with saints cornelius and cyprian and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages that we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] jesus unites us as brothers and sisters and so as members of that one family of god we can pray as he taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our day that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles
