well good morning hill church so good to see everybody today my one of my favorite moments of the week is right now while everybody's just getting reacquainted and catching up on the last week the events of the last week we know coming in that we all bring in kind of a a platter of experiences from the week behind us right i know some people in this room are dealing with loved ones being very very sick we have folks in the room who are dealing with with uh all sorts of things marriages that need a miracle and children who need a miracle and um here we come right to the to the place where there's no other place to get hope from my friends there's no other place that we can seek our hope in other than christ so that's why we're here let's stand together and declare him we're going to sing an old hymn some in some of these words are very interesting but when you really lean into them they're actually quite quite rich [Music] a mighty fortress a mighty fortress is our guard a bull would never fail [Music] blood [Music] for still our ancient foe just seek to work us his craft and power are great and armed with cruel hate on earth is not his equals [Music] did we in our own strength confined [Music] we're not the right man on our side the man of god don't choose [Music] ask who that may be christ jesus [Music] is his name and age and he must win the battle [Music] should threaten to undo [Music] we will not fear for god [Music] his truth to triumph through us the prince of darkness we tremble not for him his rights we cannot adore forelo his doom is sure one little word [Music] above all earthly powers [Music] let goods and kindreds go [Music] this mortal life also the body they may kill god's truth abideth still his kingdom is forever [Music] there's too many things to list off that we can thank you for lord we just thank you to be in your presence this morning we thank you to be with your people this morning we thank you that we can worship in your house lord this morning we thank you so much just for who you are in our lives you are a comforter your provider you are a mighty a mighty mighty fortress lord and i know everyone here in this building is bringing something to you this morning lord whether it's pain whether it's suffering whether it's joyful times whether it's sorrowful times lord and i just pray that you'd allow us to all take a moment this morning lord and place that at your feet and that we know that our burdens are never too great for you and that you are just abba father you are you are simply put our everything yes and lord we just thank you for this time to come and bring you the worship that you so rightfully deserve and we thank you that we have the privilege and the honor of bringing you that worship that you allow us to come before you the all-powerful god of the universe and just show you how much we love you in just a small way and lord we pray you just bless this time this morning we pray you bless the preaching of the word and just lord be with us and allow us to put aside the rest of the plans for the day and the week and the month and everything and just take time lord right now to focus on you and focus on who you are for us and what you mean to us we pray for all these things in your name amen i want to read you guys a verse from matthew about rest and you know sometimes i think when we think about what people deal with when you have anxiety when you're stressed sometimes the hardest thing to do is sleep sometimes the hardest thing to do is truly rest um and how i say how interesting that jesus addresses that but it's of course he would address this right in matthew um chapter 11 he tells us come to me come to me all who are weary and burdened and i will give you rest take my yoke upon you and learn from me for i'm gentle thank you and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls it's in all caps in this bible which i like for my yoke is comfortable and my burden is light what a promise what a promise this morning [Music] all who are thirsty all who are weak come to the fountain dip your heart in the stream of life and let the pain in the sorrow be washed [Music] in the waves of his mercy as deep cries out too deep we sing come lord jesus comes come lord jesus comes [Music] come lord jesus [Music] oh come on jesus [Music] and all who are weak come to the fountain be washed [Music] in the waves of his mercy as deep cries out too deep we sing come lord jesus comes oh come lord jesus come the holy spirit holy spirit [Music] steep cries out to deep steep cries out too deep as deep cries out too deep we sing come lord jesus [Music] [Music] holy [Music] oh holy spirit come [Music] we sang in our first song one little word would fell him talking about the enemy of our souls one little word would fell him and then we went on to sing a song with not a whole lot of words but come lord jesus come so powerful and uh in some of our situations that's the best we can do we can say i don't even know how to pray for the outcome here so i'm just saying come lord jesus come please come come into this situation come into this place lord come come into my heart heart come lord come lord if you come people are raised from the dead if you come children are healed we just heard about that last week right if you come hearts are turned born again [Music] if you come ashes are turned into beauty and when you come there is freedom testimonies are being made and written and oh deep cries out too deep from the depths of our hearts lord we cry out to you our deep cries out to you lord [Music] sometimes we don't have the words so all we can say is come lord come lord [Music] your people are praying your people are weeping your people are needing you [Music] lord we lift up those things to you right now that we have not even dared to pray for because we just don't have faith for it [Music] would you come lord as deep cries out to your people sing come lord jesus [Music] [Music] there's no other hope no other name that we would cry out [Music] thank you lord thank you in christ alone my hope is he [Music] this is is solid ground firm through the fistiest [Music] [Music] i comforted [Music] i stay [Music] in christ alone who took on flesh fullness of god in helpless babe this gift of love and righteousness by the ones he came to save till on that cross as jesus died the wrath of god was satisfied for every sin on him was laid here in the death of christ highlands [Music] [Applause] [Music] they're in the ground his body led light of the world by darkness swain then bursting forth [Music] [Applause] [Music] victory [Music] with the precious blood of christ [Music] here's the good news right here no guilt no guilt in life no fearing death this is the power of christ in me from life's first cry jesus commands my destiny no power of hell the scheme of man [Music] till he returns or calls me home here or calls me home here [Music] hallelujah hallelujah sweeter words have never been spoken no guilt in life no fear in death the power of christ and me lord thank you for giving us songs that help us sing the truth so that we can plant our flag in the ground we wake up again today and say i will follow christ i will trust christ i will put my faith in christ lord you knew that there would be so many days when your disciples would just not be able to see how you are going to do it and you were so merciful and compassionate but you also so clear that you prayed for us that we would stand you said to peter satan has asked to sift you as wheat but i have prayed for you peter and when you have turned back you will strengthen the brothers and i know that some of us right now are being sifted sifted by satan and then the lord and his wisdom is allowing it but we will turn our faces to christ and when we have turned back the very testimony that god is writing right now will strengthen the church i believe it i believe it so lord thank you for that teach us today we pray root us so deeply in your word oh god that we would truly be trees planted by streams of water and bearing fruit no matter what's happening in this desert around us use your your uh your child your son this morning to impart a word of truth to us and use each other to encourage and pray for one another thank you for this church thank you presence of my savior [Music] where my trust is without borders let me walk upon the water wherever you were [Music] and my faith will be made stronger in the presence of my savior and i will call upon your name [Music] and keep my eyes above the waves my soul will rest in your embrace i am yours and you are mine [Music] [Music] lord would you find hearts that are fully rest in you lord find hearts that are at rest in you god lord i just pray god that we would be people who can trust you before you work it all out let's be people who look back on today and say you know what but i never stopped trusting him let's be those people church in the name of jesus amen amen amen you may be seated but you were probably going to sit down anyway how's everybody doing this morning obviously we must have a lot of visitors here today if that's what you thought you were supposed to do when i said how's everyone doing this morning so all right we need so we're gonna we're gonna try this one more time as as you all know better how are you guys doing this morning there you go all right all right so a couple quick things uh there is a lot of things that we are praying for there are members of our church that aren't doing well family members who are struggling so i want to pray right now just for everything that's going on and all the heavy hearts lord i thank you so much that you are a good god that you see us that you hear us and that we are not alone that you've communicated through your son that you are with us and so lord as many of us may be heavy hearted because of something going on immediately with us or someone we know we just pray that you will show up lord have your way as we move and transition into the preached word this morning i pray that you will speak to our hearts check us where we need to be checked and let us put down our defense in areas where we quickly try to argue and let you be the lord over our lives where we need strength i pray father that we feel your presence and that we are reminded that you are working in areas where we don't even think and still let us not try to play god we're pretty cheesy backups in jesus name amen so you heard all of those announcements and so i just want to reiterate one i don't think was there the children's ministry meeting today at two o'clock and so i know that probably went over a whole bunch of people's heads in here but if i could guilt you a little bit into showing up and possibly being used in that area that is a big priority for us as we transition into northwest that that is a you know i said last week when we opened the sermon um frederick douglass's quote it's easier to build strong children than to repair broken men and women and so we there are so many great ministries in our valley homeless ministries recovery ministries and they and we don't take shots and go why don't you care about this thing this is typically what the church does is when the church has like a special issue they'd be like oh all those people care about jesus body needs to be jesus body and one of our priorities need to be children and young people and students and so we are very serious about having an amazing youth team and an amazing children team that are doing it and so if you feel a little guilty right now let the lord use that come on out today at two emily and her team will be meeting going through our curriculum and going through our programming on sunday so that when we get there on the 14th things are going to be trippy and the new tech and all that stuff's going to go but by the 14th and on we will have an amazing ministry where people are dropping off their children and their children are covered they're learning they're excited amen all right so there's plenty of ways to serve you don't have to teach in the classroom and lose your mind it could just be preparing snacks and so if that is you and you want to get plugged in don't forget the 30th our harvest festival that's going to be pretty cool it's going to be in lansdowne you know we don't want to be a church that talks about it we want to be able to show up we take serious our community and our city and so we want to serve all the wonderful families in lansdowne if you're from here you know there's a lot of challenges there but man it'd be pretty great to just put our arms just like we did last year we had about 400 people come out to our harvest festival and this year we're taking it right and partnering with first roanoke and i think that is it and so without further ado i want to introduce my friend um katie and brett have been supporters and encouragers of us in this church since before we were even talking about the hill church when i the day i arrived in roanoke i got a phone call from this super hyper guy that i didn't know and was just like going crazy over the phone and i looked at the phones like who is this crazy guy and he's just like hey we need to connect i heard about you and man from that time over four and a half years he has just been a tremendous brother um him and katie have just been behind us they've sent people from their church to be here and then when some of students from radford or at tech would move into roanoke they would always send people here some of them stay some of them leave because i'm crazy and so it's all good it's their loss but i just want to say that valley bible and just the johnson specifically have just been tremendous supporters of us when one person who actually stops me and goes hey man how's your soul how are you doing are you getting rest is brett that he gets to speak into my life that way and we greatly love them and appreciate them and so i want to pray for him as he prepares to come forward lord i know my brother is a little tired in going through but i pray this morning that you give him strength and freedom i pray that the articulation of the word this morning not only um encourages and strengthens and equips your church but also fills him i pray that you just give him um the space to be used by you and that his life becomes uh just just a space where you can speak through as he goes through john 5 and freely shares what you've placed on his heart and that we will get lost and realize along the way that we are actually hearing from you when we ask all of this in the matchless name of jesus christ our lord and savior amen amen well i'm glad to be with you this morning and i do want to draw attention those those cinnamon tims you got on i think that's the color right am i yeah come on come on fresh he always ups the shoe game you know i can't i can't keep up i'm like i got i'm like nah it ain't it ain't what you got so glad to be with you this morning the hill the hill has been such a joy to us so so we down in radford are praying for y'all we are behind you and just so excited i remember when charles moved to the city i just was like man we need this so bad our city needs us so bad and uh and so i'm just we're we're super pumped to be able to partner with you guys so i'm glad to be here this morning so i have five kids so one of the things that my wife and i do a lot of is spend a lot of time down at playgrounds and soccer fields watching kids run around and one of the things that's always interesting is to see what comes out as these kids run around right there they say the craziest things they say all sorts of weird things all sorts of funny things i'll just you know i go to soccer game and you know my daughter will be out in the middle of soccer field you know sitting in indian style you know playing in the dirt and she's sitting there and we're like there's a game there's the ball oh yeah yes oh you know she's just sitting there and one of the things that is striking though when you go down the playground you're watching these kids relate right you're watching them live their lives you're watching them do their thing sometimes we get caught off guard right you hear something come out of the mouth this happened to us last week got a little story through my daughter this comment that was made to her you know out of the mouth of somebody it shouldn't have been coming out a little like nine-year-old boy and you just think man what's going on in his soul right why are those words in the mind and in the mouth of a nine-year-old like what's going on right just kind of grieves us well this morning there's a saying that one of the elders in our church says you know if you follow an angry kid home what do you find right talk about this all the time in our school systems right the problem with kids problem is parents so this morning we're going to kind of follow jesus home and kind of see kind of what why he does what he does so we're gonna be in john five so flip with me if you have your bibles to john chapter five and a little little kind of you know set the stage for us is jesus always illustrates these truths in ways that i never would right he tells these stories and you're like wait you're using that story to make that point that is not where i would have jumped but that is the beauty of why we preach the word this is why we preach you know the bible is that when we dive into god's word we always find things we did not expect and it strikes us in ways that we do not expect and so last week if you remember right charles preached the the passage about this man this roman official who's seeking out the healing of his son so it's kind of the story of this guy's kind of pursuit of jesus that he would be healed we have another healing story this morning but it's really different the details are really different and this is again the beauty of the word of god so let me read this for us so we got we got some text we're getting through this morning so i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna move through this i'm like charles i'm i'm i move pretty quick i'm a high energy guy so so try and track with me we're gonna start in john 5 1 and we're going to go through verse 9 and we'll kind of stop there and then we'll go down to the second part so we'll kind of take a chunk of the time we're going to get through verse 30 this morning i know ambitious let's do it it says john chapter five starting in verse one so well i should say he was he was kind of tromping around in uh in galilee and cana and samaria right we had the woman at the well and john four we have him at the the place where he made water into wine uh you know they were dropping fat beats he was having a good time at the party in cana um and so now he's making his way back to the big city so just so he's kind of worked his way through the countryside now he's and we'll see that here in the beginning so john 5 starting in verse 1. after this there was a feast of the jews and jesus went up to jerusalem now there is in jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool in aramaic called bethesda which has five roofed colonnades in these lay a multitude of invalids blind and lame and paralyzed one man was there who had been invalid for 38 years when jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time he said to him do you want to be healed and the sick man answered him sir i have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up and while i am going another steps down before me jesus said to him get up take your bed and walk and at once the man was healed and he took his bed and walked we'll pause right there so this is an interesting story right we don't have the story of this guy who is kind of adamantly seeking jesus as a matter of fact jesus has to ask the guy do you want to be healed and he doesn't actually say yeah i want to be healed he actually responds with hey there's this myth of this stirring that happens in this pool and and can you get me to the pool like he's missing the whole picture here so great right like you have jesus we just saw him heal last you know a few verses ago and you got this guy who's for 38 years long to be healed and he's at the side of this pool and jesus says hey you want to be healed he's like oh yeah there's water over here and just like uh i'm here so this is an interesting story this story is not about the faith of the man who wants to be healed this is a story about the goodness and the natural beauty of christ who comes and says he lovingly willfully eagerly gives away restoration right jesus is all about this but it's an interesting story because he walks through kind of a crowd of other people there's a lot of sick people there but he picks this one man right jesus always does things different than we expect right if we're to paint a picture of jesus he rolls up to a crowd of people who have infirmities you think he's just going to start but he doesn't he goes to one person and he says do you want to be healed it's a ridiculous question right it's ridiculous do you want to be healed and again the man doesn't respond so what i want to highlight here is that this story is about jesus we got to be really careful because often we will read these stories and we want to flip it real quick to how this is us where it's like well hold on this is making a point about who jesus is that jesus is this messiah who comes imagine this guy for 38 years charles joked about this last week and i think it's always good to joke about right i hate waiting for 60 seconds 38 years right you think about you think about israel in egypt 400 years and often our prayers have the subtext of like come on how long is this going to take but jesus had an appointment in mind for this guy right and so he comes down he heals this guy so we see the story and really we don't see any dynamic faith we don't see any sort of amazing characteristic of this guy who needs to be healed we just see somebody who's in need of healing jesus showing up and and healing him he doesn't even wait for response to the question he just says get up man you're healed carry your mat so that's the the illustration so what we're going to see this morning is we see an illustration an explanation and a warning okay so the illustration we get is this it's like okay well what's he illustrating well we're going to see so let's read the next section because because what happens when jesus shows up and hear me church when when jesus shows up he always causes a stir okay so he always causes a problem it disrupts things it it it makes things kind of just come unglued a little bit so let's see how how what the results of his healing look let's let's see what happens verse number ten i guess it's 9b now that day was the sabbath so the jews said to the man who had been healed it is the sabbath and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed but he answered them the man who healed me that man said to me take up your bed and walk and they asked him who is the man who said do you take up your bed and walk now the man who had been healed did not know who it was see that jesus didn't even tell him at the time he just said go on you're healed for jesus had withdrawn and there was a crowd in that place verse 14 afterward jesus found him in the temple and said to him see you are well sin no more that nothing worse may happen to you the man went away and told the jews that it was jesus who had healed him and this was why the jews were persecuting jesus because he was doing these things on the sabbath but jesus answered them my father is working until now and i am working we'll pause right there so here's jesus he shows up this man's been suffering for 38 years he heals the guy and we see the result the first result is a healing the first result is this guy is restored his his body is restored to health not of his own faith not of his own pleas because of the will and the grace and the beauty and the mercy of christ so he shows up and he offers that but then the other result is that he ticks off a bunch of jewish leaders so hear me when jesus shows up right when jesus shows up in your world is he bringing delight or is he bringing disruption right we're here we've been crying out all morning come lord jesus jesus comes in the door jesus shows up here and are we like oh yes or are we going whoa wait whoa whoa whoa i got a few things i got to take care of you're messing up my timeline you're messing up my agenda jesus so here these guys you have you have the guy who's healed who he's been restored we don't really see how he feels about that we just know he's he's pumped to be to be healed but then the other response we see is that people are going like wait what happened and look they breezed right by oh you were healed okay cool um on the sabbath no he did not come again on the sabbath you did what you picked up your mat are you kidding me on the sabbath and they go off and have a little pow wow he's healing you see that they're he they're missing like yeah someone showed up in the flesh and and restored a man for 38 years restored him to life they completely missed the beauty of christ in their midst did i mention that jesus often does things in very unexpected ways he's not on your timetable the things that sometimes we most care about jesus cares more about what's better for you which is often frustrating because i pray some really good prayers i mean they're good they're genuine right they're good you get all the right words and jesus just says no or my other least favorite weight and i'm like if i hear weight one more right so so the two results we get so this is our illustration is restoration right delight and disruption i don't even know why they're so frustrated other than they jesus is jacking with their agenda he's jacking with their system they know that if someone shows up and does the thing that jesus does the privilege the power the effects that they get to have they get that's all going to go away so they're getting frustrated that jesus is coming and doing things he's not supposed to do so that's the illustration and then we get this beautiful thing which we don't always get sometimes you get these crazy parables and you're like i don't really know what that's about but jesus jesus tells us jesus tells us he gives us that little wink there in verse 17 right but jesus answered them my father is working until now and i am working and look at what it says in verse 18 we'll read a few more verses here this was why the jews were seeking all the more to kill him because not only was he breaking the sabbath but he was even calling god his own father making himself equal with god look what 19 says i love this so jesus said to them truly truly i say to you the son can do nothing of his own accord but only what he sees the father doing for whatever the father does the son does likewise for the father loves the son and shows him all that he himself is doing and greater works than these will he show will he show him so that you would may marvel for as the father raises the dead and gives them life so also the son gives life to whom he will the father judges no one but has given all judgment to the son that all may honor the son right just as they honor the father whoever does not honor the son does not honor the father who sent him truly truly i say to you whoever's hear whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life he does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life we'll stop right there is this the story you are going to use to illustrate jesus's intimacy and closeness with the father but jesus says oh you want you want to know like why i'm doing what i'm doing you want to know why the things that i say that are in my heart and in my mind that come out of my mouth and the things that i do and the things i care you want to know why that happens and why i'm operating this way will let me tell you there is one beautiful truth which is the heart of the gospel listen church the heart of the gospel ain't forgiveness of sin that's beautiful the heart of the gospel is not gifts of the spirit that's beautiful there's a lot of beautiful things that come from the gospel but the absolute center of the good news of the gospel of christ is not that we get our sins cleaned it's what's what that produces is that there is a god in heaven who desperately loves you who is desperately beautiful and he he's not just saying be clean get out of here he says be clean and now let me give you myself that you would be close to him that you would be tied into the power of the father our faith is beautiful because of its object not because the faith itself is somehow miraculous no the the father in heaven who who does these kinds of things is offering us all of this do we remember john 1 right i'm guessing charles preached it right 113 but to all who did receive him who believed in his name he gave them the right to become children of god who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor the will of man but of god that's the gospel is that we are people who are now united to the living god who now have union to christ we now have new life because of who we are connected to not because of the cool things we get to do we even take this thing about greater signs he will do and often we want to make it about these miracles where really what he's saying is i am bringing you to myself there is nothing more he could possibly give you than his personal presence and note how he illustrates the story not a story about overwhelming faith a story actually where faith is fairly absent what he what he emphasizes to show that he's come from the father is this story where he shows up and kind of lovingly says hey you don't even really really asking but i have this restoration that i want to give you get up walk this is the beauty this is this is this is who we are we're not just a people who who do christian activities we're not a people who do social justice we're not a people who who who just seek out these things we are people who say uh reconciliation with god is now available you can have relationship with the god of the universe you and when that happens everything changes and that's what this text is all about and so we see kind of a few attributes of jesus that kind of illustrate this and again i can't say it enough when i preach it's always different than i would expect how does he illustrate his connectedness to the father how does he illustrate his his union to the father well i could have taken all kinds of things but he takes these wild ones brings in things like resurrection well the first thing that we see that is kind of the the indicator and kind of the result of jesus union to the father is that he is a judge and we love that one you know you do a little poll go out through the city all right number one thing that you think of when you think about the powerful loving god and what he offers go is judge going to make the list well it is it's in here right look at look at verse 19. the son can do nothing on his own accord and i hear that church everywhere we go as people who are in christ we do nothing on our own accord paul actually says in corinthians about sexual sin he says you realize who's going with you when you go for that hookup the living god because you are now a temple of the living god first corinthians 6 check it out he's saying because everywhere you go i mean everywhere you go when you're in christ the presence of the living god goes with you so he can do nothing on his own accord but only what he sees the father doing for whatever the father does the son does likewise for the father loves the son and shows him all that he himself is doing and greater works than these he will do look at verse 21 for as the father raises the dead gives them life so the son gives life to whom he will the father judges no one but has given all judgment to the son that all may honor the son just as they honor the father now he doesn't get into crazy detail right in this text about this judgment and i don't want to get into crazy detail either but i want you to note that one of the things that he emphasized about his union to the father is that god the father has given jesus the task the appointment of being judged so when we go when we die when we stand before the judgment seat we will be looking at jesus is that a moment of disruption for you or is that is that a moment of delight i often say it this way too when we get to glory are you gonna be more excited about what's not there or about what is look there's some good things ain't gonna be their death pain tears praise god but you know who's gonna be there the living one and he's going to be excited to see those who believed upon him so judge is the first thing we see second thing we see he gives life now we just get a little a little nod in here where it's like wait wait whoa what look at what it says where were we verse 23 on the father who does not have a son uh let's see i missed that part let's see [Music] 21 there it is as the father raises the dead yeah there we go thank you charles i just wish he would be with me all the time when i preach be my memory help me for as the father raises the dead he just drops that in here for the father raises the dead and gives them life so also the son gives life to whom he will so he takes that phrase and then verse 25 through the rest of this little section is the explanation of that look at verse 25 truly truly i say to you an hour is coming and listen to this and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the son of god and those who hear will live whereas the father has life in himself so he has granted the son also to have life in himself and he has given him authority to execute judgment because he is the son of man do not marvel at this for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out and those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done easel evil to the resurrection of judgment and then look at verse 30 he emphasizes again i can do nothing on my own with pause right there so let me ask you this church do we believe that resurrection's a real thing because the world wants to tell us that that's crazy the world wants to tell us i mean come on don't push it spiritual reality that's cute that's nice jesus is saying two things about this life that he gives right he gives life meaning that when we believe now he says the hour is now here that when the dead right and when we go and read ephesians we go and read romans we know that we are dead in our trespasses and sin so we are walking among the walking dead aren't we just as we were we're all those people we are all people who are dead in our trespasses and sin but when they believe upon christ they now have life eternal so we believe that we believe that we now have citizenship in heaven we believe that we have new birth in christ so he judges he gives life but then he he talks very specifically in verse 29. and come out those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment do you realize from the beginning one of the qualifiers of the people of god is that we believe in a literal physical bodily resurrection of jesus christ it's not a metaphor right we don't think he spiritually rose from the dead we believe that jesus was buried put in a tomb his flesh died he rose again conquered the grave and offered us union to him that is what we can sit there and with confidence how can you confidently say you have union to the living god because my king died and rose again and says it is finished it's done and we know it is because the price was paid in full and the resurrection is the evidence of that so we believe in an actual little literal resurrection and then paul in first corinthians 15 says if jesus has not been raised we have all men are to be pitied because the resurrection of the dead is what jesus was talking about when he said i'm going to give you life eternal so we get this new birth that happens spiritually now and then there's this end of the age resurrection where all flesh will be raised and judged right all flesh will be resurrected and here's the key we look at this language here about those who've done good and those who've done evil and let me ask you this when you follow a kid home what do you find it's kind of a disrupting picture i have five children i have five ambassadors of who i am that are out living in the world displaying the things that they have learned under my tutelage a lot of repentance along the way right so as you live and here's where we kind of transition to applications we're living right as we're following after jesus as we are walking behind him right as people see us on the playground as people see us running around the soccer field they see us at the office they see us at the gym they see us on our campuses who who are they beholding i don't want that to be a guilt trip i want it to be something that goes huh they follow me home what kind of father they gonna because we are people who ultimately have become children of the living god who the father has welcomed us in he seated us at the table he's transforming us he's changing us and we become people this text says who do good not because we are just doing it on our own because i can only do what i see the father doing how's your view right have you believed on christ have you been brought near right this this gets into huh what even that language right uh he can only do what he sees the father doing what are we laying our eyes on folks are we a people who are steeped in the word of god who are able to go look this is the kind of stuff that he does so that way when we show up and we're walking with jesus and we bring delight or disruption and people you know we think we want to be able to have both right that we can we can do uh faithful living to jesus and then we're gonna get a pat on the back from the world and that is getting a lot clearly you know not the case you're going to fall after jesus and love people really well and they're going to say how dare you right so i said there's going to be an illustration it's going to be an explanation and there's going to be a warning so we're going to hop to the end of the chapter man i wish there's just so much good stuff here hop down to the end of the chapter we're going to do verses 37 verse 37 and the father who sent me has borne witness about me his voice you have never heard his form you have never seen and you do not have his word abiding in you for you do not believe the one whom he has sent you search the scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life and they bear witness about me yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life i do not receive glory from people but i know that you do not have the love of god within you i have come in my father's name and you did not receive me if another comes in his own name you will receive him how can you believe when you receive glory from one another and not seek the glory that comes only from god let me tell you church we'll stop right there let me tell you this it is so hard not to live for the glory of men this is why instagram is successful there's something visceral there's something immediate there's something very satisfying about getting the pat on the back going like you're killing it good job and if you've ever had the opposite of that the disdain of men which we fight our whole lives to avoid that when we get the disdain of men where they say well what you believe what the scripture says the scripture what what are you talking about man it's hard to fight that because what i want is i want to live faithfully for christ and i want the people around me to go man good work even sometimes in the body of christ when you do exactly what god wants people say dude what are you doing just stop give it up man why are you being so like dogmatic like well i feel like god's really clear on some things now hear me there's a wrong way right he even says it you search the scriptures we can use the bible itself as a weapon as these leaders are doing but the warning here is this and this is really important in our age you better be seeking the right kind of glory because there's a glory that you can get now and it's palpable you get all those likes you get all those thumbs up you get all those pats on the back when we we toe the line of whatever group it is that we're around we tow the line of whatever whoever we want that praise and glory from and what he's saying is you don't want my glory because you sought your glory somewhere else and it's confusing the people of god because they're looking for the wrong affirmation the affirmation we get is from the father through the shed blood of the son of god and church hear me if we do this well it's going to be real uncomfortable it's going to be real uncomfortable but you know what's beautiful when you're sitting there and you're you're repenting to someone let me paint a little picture for you repenting to someone because you realize that in your tone and in your posture the way you said the things you said were were was sinful right you you brought harshness i think about my kids as i say this you brought harshness instead of love you spoke out of anger instead of out of you know compassion and then we'll replay the incident in our head and go i said all the right things hear me i'm not talking about what you said i'm talking about why you were doing what you were doing and and having to go all right lord so when we go to do that apology i'm thinking about this conversation i have with an adult i'm sorry for what i said to you it's one of my sisters in christ turns on me and goes that's right not oh hey um i'm so proud of you good job that's right and you screwed up here and here and here and here i've actually got a list let me talk about that next time i'm like oh boy and then i walk away in tears ashamed wounded and my god says to me well done ain't about winning it's about loving your sister enough to not want to win to go can i love her and give her the space to work through her stuff because if i don't if i become a man who's all about winning and getting the glory of men and getting all those w's in every argument the kingdom right they're following me home to see an angry father not a compassionate one would we be a church would be a people who say huh something something going on there something different from where we see they're not about power they're not about the glory of men they're there's something different distinctive even disturbing disruptive about what they're doing right this is our vision right that we disrupt what's what what what the enemy is doing in the northwest with what god wants to do in the northwest would be those who are not seeking our own glory and acclaim but we would be those who seek the glory and claim of christ jesus and as they see that right they're going to go yeah this this has a different flavor i don't have a category for you you're holding like some really conservative solid biblical things and yet y'all are like doing the work of neighbor love like y'all going out and you're loving people you're reaching the city in a way that we we haven't seen right man would that be our testimony would we confound the world and would they follow us home to see a father that loves them who sent his son to die for them and would they even go man i don't get it i don't even like it but i just there's something that just draws me about that would that be our testimony let's pray heavenly father would you make us into a people and you have to do this lord would you make us into a people who bring delight and disruption we're usually really good at one of the two where we can delight a crowd or we frustrate people but lord could we be both as we lay our lives down for our brothers we lay our lives down for our sisters lord as people behold our life would they see the glory of the father that's been given to us by the sacrifice of the son lord only you can exalt those who are being torn down lord would we be those people who though we are fools to the world you used to shame the wise in your power in your uh idea and in your timing lord will we be those kind of followers we pray in jesus name amen
