know uh folks are watching from albuquerque in fact dave bentley is uh celebrating his 85th birthday uh this week and his connection back to saint cecilia goes all the way back to 1954. that was before my time dave i just want to tell you and this guy's time too huh but 1954 is when they had the last renovation prior to the ones we just did and that's when they put in that beautiful window up there in between all the pipes and the organs so that was 1954. i also want to say hi to kevin bugbee's parents marie and duane who are watching from hendersonville north carolina and all the detroit in case we forget how we begin how do we always begin this liturgy we begin in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit the lord be with all of you let's settle our spirits now let's place ourselves in each other's presence and in the presence of that source of mercy forgiveness and understanding lord jesus you are the suffering servant that knows our pain lord have mercy christ jesus you are that high priest that is not unsympathetic to our suffering christ have mercy and lord jesus you remind us if we want to be the greatest we want to be number one it's about being the servant of all lord have mercy so may our good and loving god then have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to new and eternal life [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] lord jesus christ only begotten lord the sins of the world have mercy on us [Applause] [Music] have mercy on us and on earth [Applause] you are the lord in the glory of god [Music] peace [Music] so let us pray almighty and ever-loving god grant that each of us may always conform our will to yours and serve you in sincerity of heart through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever you know father dan's family just uh pulled up too and um we they got a nice parking spot out front even though you got new york license plates we still this is a very welcoming place the carew family so it's good for us to have you here with us today listen as we listen to the readings today the first words of that first reading might make us think that god's someplace up there looking down saying yeah that's it kid toughen up that's not our god our god takes no delight in our suffering then you see it all the time but it's a reminder that first reading and second reading that god is with us jesus is with us in our suffering and that it's through our suffering that we come to new life but not suffering for its own sake a reading from the prophet isaiah the lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity if he gives his life as an offering for sin he shall see his descendants in a long life and the will of the lord shall be accomplished through him because of his affliction he shall see the light of fullness of days through his suffering my servant shall justify many and their guilt he shall bear the word of the lord [Music] hmm [Music] lord let your mercy be we place our trust in you as we place our trust in you [Music] us as we place our trust in you [Music] the word of the lord is [Music] justice and right and his mercy for love is the earth [Music] [Applause] as we praise our trust [Music] yes the lord's eyes are on those who fear him [Music] in his merciful lord to rescue their souls from earth to keep them alive in famine [Music] [Applause] us as we praise us [Music] our soul is waiting for the lord is [Music] [Music] bless [Music] mercy beyond us as we please our choice [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens jesus the son of god let us hold fast to our confession for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has similarly been tested in every way yet without sin let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help the word of the lord so [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] your words o lord give joy to my heart your teaching is light to my eyes my friends the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark james and john the sons of zebedee came to jesus and said to him teacher we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you jesus replied what do you wish me to do for you they answered him grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your not know what you are asking can you drink the cup that i drink or be baptized with the baptism with which i am baptized i said to him we can and with the baptism with which i am baptized you will be baptized but to sit at my right or my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared when the ten other disciples heard this they said they became indignant at james and john and jesus summoned them and said to them you know that those who are recognized as rulers over the gentiles lord it over them and their great ones make their authority over them felt but it shall not be so among you rather whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all for the son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many the gospel of the lord prays to you lord so i'd like to invite the uh k1 and uh k2 and grade 1 kids to come forward uh for a blessing you guys it's been a year and a half since we've been back in this church we got to get back into our routines right so why don't you guys come up real quick give a little blessing then you can go on down into a snazzy new space downstairs all right and do the great dig theological discussions that you're gonna have you guys come on up come right up here because we want everybody who's watching at home to see you come on up you guys big crew big crew today huh man is it good to see you guys all right so you guys are going to go downstairs right and you're going to talk about the readings and father dan's going to talk to us about the readings i cannot tell you how happy we are that you're all here together today so as you are as you go downstairs i want you to talk about who's going to be the greatest but you know how you be the greatest by stepping over everybody else and then saying i'm the greatest no how do we become the greatest by helping each other by serving each other right so we ask god to bless you guys how do we bless ourselves in the name of the father here up here son and holy spirit amen all right we'll see in a little while okay peace awesome sarah you guys can follow sarah huh [Music] amen of the merciful love of god the earth is full that's that beautiful line that we heard sung so beautifully in our psalm today of the merciful love of god the earth is full i think of the poet gerard manly hopkins the world is charged with the grandeur of god the beautiful majestic love of god active and alive in all things as i was praying with these readings this week it was that line that kept rolling through my prayer this beautiful image that god's love is active and alive in everything of god's loving kindness in the midst of everything and partly because i knew i was going to be here that i was going to be able to be with all of you virtually or here in person it's a great joy to be able to be here before i was a jesuit it feels like many many many years ago i used to come here to saint cecilia's and before that to the jesuit urban center uh and so these are homes to me uh and it's a great great joy to be able to return to these places to be able to be part of this community again and to be able to pray with all of you i'm very very grateful to father john for welcoming me and for inviting all of us to a faith life to inviting us all into greater depth week in and week out in the great work of this parish and so as i come here today as we're praying with these readings i have to name just as father john did the first line of the first reading that we had today was incredibly difficult because if we take it out of context like so many people who abuse sacred scripture the bible or the quran they take a line out of it and abuse it we could abuse that line because it feels from that first line as though god looks at our suffering and says uh whatever but then we look at the second reading and in the second reading it is that that sense of the high priest that image so important in the book of hebrews that this high priest is not someone far removed and high above separate from our reality this is a high priest this is an this is a god who has been right in the very middle of our worries our fears our concerns our suffering so the suffering that we hear about in the first reading is not a suffering removed from the god who is love the image we get in that second reading is that the very image of god we have is the god who lingers with us who never abandons us who is never separate from us as father john said i work my full-time job is in the middle east i'm based in beirut i was in damascus a month and a half ago i was in baghdad a month ago i see a lot of suffering and i insist in my prayer with god you cannot abandon these people you cannot abandon those and the beautiful part of my work is that every day i see images of god's love and kindness shining through great images of hope teachers inspiring their students social workers inspiring the people who've gone through genocides and terrible situations in life and war inspiring them into deeper community into a deeper understanding of themselves to work through traumas and to continue that journey it is the very image of that god who never abandons us in jrs in in the work that i do we talk about it as accompaniment solidarity that we would remain with one another it isn't that we're going to fix you little person over there you know this image of the god from on high or the imperialist sort of savior coming to save the poor little people there that has gotten the us into all sorts of problems certainly in the middle east the image here is i'm gonna go and hang out with you because god in our readings today says you know what you're worth it i want to hang out with you you're beautiful you're made in the image and likeness of god and god says that every moment of the day in that spirit of loving kindness you are worth being close to and because you're worth being close to go and be close to your neighbor do not abandon them god who created you created your neighbor whoever they are wherever they are they are your neighbor and so as we look at this this gospel how does this gospel invite us into that work how is it inviting us into the reality in the reality of today how is it inviting us into that work and these last few weeks we've been praying with jesus on the path jesus on the road uh this is an image in mark's gospel jesus is always on the move and then and then and then and then and then and suddenly mark doesn't waste any time mark is on this path to jerusalem last week we had that beautiful reading where the the rich young person comes up to jesus and says what do i need to do and he's done everything right and jesus says give up everything sell what you have give it to the poor and follow me but the important thing jesus looks at this person jesus loves that person and then jesus calls that person jesus is on the journey this person is stuck in a rut jesus looks at each one of us knows everything about us inside and out is right there next to us doesn't run away in disgust jesus loves us loves that person right there the real gritty messy person in front of him loves him and then says get on with the journey what's the next step where is the movement into creative instability into that next place into the ever greater in our jesuit language we talk about that as the modus the always more and so as i've been praying with jesus on the pilgrimage jesus on the journey these last few weeks i'm also mindful we're celebrating i think it's the 700th anniversary of dante and and there's that beautiful line at the beginning of the divine comedy halfway through the middle half midway through the journey of our life i found myself in a dark forest that beautiful image of in the journey of our life we're going along we're doing just fine and then at some point midway in the journey of our life there is a moment of uncertainty a moment of lostness a moment of unclarity felt that i've certainly felt that when i was here in boston as a jesuit i was working with the ignatian spirituality program working with men and women in recovery men and women living on the streets and when they talked about rock bottom they had all felt that that moment when i'm at the bottom and something needs to change and that rich young person that we had in the gospel last week was was in that same place and jesus called him from that invited him into greater depth into that next step one of the great gifts of my life as a jesuit is on if when i was here at bc and then now as i'm visiting some of my family are here i get to hang out with my nephews who are great guys great i keep thinking them as kids and they're not really kids anymore unfortunately but they're great guys but one of the great gifts was to be with them when they were really small and to see them take their first steps whenever i think of the image of a path or a pilgrimage or a walk through life i always think of a baby taking their first steps because they're not sure they're going to land the next step in order to do that the baby has to do what is counter-intuitive and they have to be off-balance they have to be leaning forward and then put their foot there and hope insha'allah that they land their foot and sometimes they don't and they fall and it's fine but that's the image that we're getting here of the pilgrimage all of us on the journey how are we being invited into what is uncertain and unclear how are we in we being invited to be off balance enough be stable enough to be moving forward and living in the hope that we're going to land the next step that's what jesus is inviting us to where we are stuck in that dark forest come follow me inviting us out of that and so this jesus is continuing along the journey and he's continuing with his apostles the people who should know best and this week we get this image with james and john and they've had this interaction with the rich young person back in the village and they've continued their journey and jesus has been telling them i'm on this journey and it isn't to some sort of throne in jerusalem it is to the cross the very essence of the image that in the middle of our suffering god will never abandon us in the very worst of what humans can do to one another god doesn't run away god lingers with us and remains with us in the middle of that and he's been telling the disciples this every day and then these yahoos james and john they come up and say oh by the way can i get a good seat at the front i i keep thinking that i'm dating myself here so forgive it's a lonely friday night dating myself but i'm there's a movie uh anchorman will ferrell probably 10 or 15 years ago now and in that there's that painfully awkward scene where he's at the pool and he's hitting on this woman and he goes i don't know how to say this but i'm kind of a big deal and that's my image for james and john in this in this reading today jesus we don't know how to say this but we're kind of a big deal and we really deserve to be at seats in the front and i laugh at that but then i think to myself how many times have i done that i don't know how to say this but i'm kind of a big deal it's something we all do it's the self-satisfaction of resting in what is safe and easy and small and jesus is saying you are a big deal but it's not because you're self-satisfied it's because you're made in the image and likeness of god exactly like your neighbor that's why you're a big deal and so jesus is inviting these individuals out of what is safe and small and into something that is just like we hear in the god in the psalm today into that radiant grandeur of god the ever greater expansive loving kindness of god i want to draw on two examples of extraordinary people that i work with in the middle east i i over oversee these four different countries and the jesuit refugee projects in each of them we work a lot in education a lot in social work a lot in mental health and psychosocial work we work with a wide variety of people displaced and host community but the two examples that i want to use because i think they're great examples of how we can live different than james and john in the gospel today the first is hebba hebb is this extraordinary woman in lebanon she's from lebanon she's drews from the religious minority of the drews in sort of central south southern lebanon and she had done training a bachelor's degree in human resources or something in university and i was working for a company and then in 2011 when the refugee crisis from syria started now lebanon is a country of four million people in a six-month window when i was there in 2011 and 12. in six months one and a half million syrians entered lebanon almost 33 percent of the population and there were syrians everywhere it would be as though a hundred million refugees entered the united states in the next six months it was overwhelming and so hebba hebba had been working at a job regular human resources yada yada and she looked around and she said that there's there's got to be something more and so we were hiring someone for human resources she joined our staff and over the last 10 years nine years or so she has so demonstrated that sense of accompaniment that sense that i will not abandon you my work might be technical and bureaucratic but my life is never that my life is always in relationship in particular with the most vulnerable always pushing herself beyond the friendship circles or the work circles that were comfortable how can i go to that camp how can i do more than just check the boxes fill out the sheets how can i get a sense of the teachers the teachers who left the schools that were bombed in aleppo and who are now teaching here in a camp in the middle of the becca valley how can i get to know them and really know the things that they're working through and what we saw in her was a beautiful example of how she as a drew's woman how she lived out the very best of the ignatian jesuit catholic principles that are the foundation of who we are she's now our country director and she continues that same work in all of the all the 250 people that she's responsible for and the thousands and thousands of refugees and vulnerable lebanese who come there that that same loving kindness is demonstrated to them and that our staff is pushed by her beyond what is safe and easy second example we have an amazing program in northern iraq and during the the onslaught of isis as i said we talk about people who abuse scriptures we see lots of american christians abusing scriptures we see isis doing the same thing abusing the beautiful quran isis flooded through uh northern syria and northern iraq and wiped out military and took over large vast spaces in particular they targeted the yazidi a small religious population up in the north around sinjar right on the turkish border in iraq and they targeted them for genocide full out without any question targeted genocide of the yazidi and so we started a program there about seven years ago with the yazidi and so we have this massive program in one of the camps up in sharia and it's an amazing place and it is it's a hundred percent yazidi and i have never felt more proud to be a jesuit and a catholic than working with this yazidi population there these genocide survivors we have mental health programs working with women who had been held as slaves for two years by isis working with people who had seen their entire families killed in front of them we have education programs we have food distribution programs visitation programs amazing in that there is firas firas is a yezidi himself he himself saw the guns of isis moving in and fled with his family into the mountains for safety firas has been trained as a psychologist and he's our lead psychologist now for a huge team that we have that do the very painfully difficult work he himself who saw members of his own family killed by isis every day listens to people recounting those stories reliving those stories and has to work through that himself and when i talked to feras when i was there a week a month ago it was very clear most of his friends have gotten asylum in germany and he could very easily go there he could go in a heartbeat germany would love it he's a trained psychologist that's fantastic but he kept saying i cannot leave my people i cannot run away for us that invitation into greater depth into that instability of the next step isn't to flee and to go to what is safe it is to remain in the messy complexity that is the yazidi population today in northern iraq we see that in heba we see that in firas i am deeply moved by their example but we hear in the gospel it is the call to each one of us how are we invited beyond the safe confines of self-satisfaction how are we invited beyond what is small and easy how are we invited to continue on that journey with jesus into that ever greater depth into that ever greater joy because when we do we realize we stand in the middle of greatness we stand in the middle of amazing people extraordinary people every one of us yazidi saint cecilia parishner jesuit every one of us yes is broken and yet every one of us is a remarkable gift a beautiful creation worth being loved worth loving and so as we pray with the psalm those beautiful words today let us indeed rejoice in the loving kindness of god which is throughout the entire earth amen hallelujah thank you brother it's good to have you here given what dan has just said shall we profess the foundation of what gives us this ability to accompany one another i believe in one god the father the almighty and the maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made but consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scripture he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets and i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen believing not only in this life but in the life of the world to come we need help along the way and we're called to confidently approach the throne of grace the cross with our prayers so communally and collectively let's make our prayer known this morning for us as church that we join our sufferings to the suffering of jesus who has similarly been tested in every way we pray lord hear our prayer for the grace of detachment that god will free us from the bonds of our egos and attachment to power and prestige so that we may make service of others our priority we pray lord hear our prayer for all who exercise authority that they may use their authority to free those who are unjustly restrained call forth the gift of others and lead us to wholeness and service we pray lord hear our prayer for all who are oppressed and for the gospel work of jesuit refugee services that god will bring refugees and victims of war to safety help them find shelter food and medical care and inspire us as christians to help lift their burdens through our efforts and resources we pray lord hear our prayer for the synod on communion participation and mission that we may open our hearts to the holy spirit and participate in furthering the life and mission of the church we pray lord hear our prayer for all who are recovering from storms floods and other natural disasters that god will relive suffering relieve suffering ease fears and give strength to move forward we pray lord hear our prayer for the sick grace may we be cleansed by the very mysteries that we serve all through jesus christ our lord will the lord be with you let's lift up our hearts and let's give thanks to the lord our god it's truly right and just yes it's our duty but it's our eternal salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you each one of us lives we move and we have our very being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your love and care but even now lord we possess the pledge of life eternal having received the first fruits of the holy spirit at our own baptism the spirit that raised jesus up from the dead we too hope for an everlasting share in eternal life through the suffering the death and the rising of your son the paschal mystery so let's join now with the angels and saints as in joyful celebration we [Music] [Music] of acclaim heaven and earth [Music] is he who comes who comes in the name of the lord [Music] lord god you are holy indeed and every single thing that you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and the working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and you make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice might be offered to your name and so lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts of bread and wine that we bring to you for consecration that they may become for us the body and the blood of our lord jesus christ on the night that he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing he broke the bread and then he gave it to his disciples he said take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples and he said take this all of you drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood it's the blood of the new the eternal covenant and it will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins so do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] right [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim whose death by whose death you willed to reconcile yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with this holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed all the blessed apostles and the glorious martyrs
