what's going on guys today we're going to talk about cooking stoves and in my opinion the best backpacking cooking setup you can possibly have so this is my current setup it is just about perfect for what I use it for I hold everything together with a light Smith six inch band this is the tokes light 650 pot and it slid the Soto wind master stove with the ignition and the Tri flex pot holder a light load towel a tokes long-handled polish Bowl spoon and obviously this is a canister stove so that's just a MSR canister of fuel so let's go through each of the parts why I like them and why you might be interested in so you can see it all fits together really well there is just a tiny tiny gap in the lid where it doesn't quite fit on but it does just perfect with this light Smith Band you can easily just use a rubber band but over time it will break down and this is nice and bright so you can see it down in your pack and it holds up much much better than a rubber band the pot itself is 650 mils so you can easily boil 2 cups of water no problem it has a great lid that fits well and has this little tab you can lift the lid off easily without burning yourself it also has a vent holes or pour holes if you're making trying to string pasta the handle is got a great cutout here so that it fits easily in your hand and you can hold it up and the handle is cool very quickly even when there's boiling water in here so you turn it off let it cool for just a second and then you're able to pick this up if you don't want to use a towel to pick it up all the time it's also very nice that this pot has the internal measurement so you can easily get your correct amount of water for your meals and it's extremely light the pot lid and the light Smith band together away a total of exactly 3 ounces I do not carry a separate mug I use this for can coffee and tea and all that type of thing also I'm not a fan of the hot lips I feel like they're basically worthless if the rim of the mug is too hot then the liquid inside is going to be too hot anyway so the hot lips is a unnecessary if you ask me but a lot of people seem to like it so that's your thing go for it it's also worth mentioning that I don't do much cooking inside my pot for the most part I'm doing freeze-dried mountain house meals or freezer bag cooking oatmeal packets that type of thing so I don't do a ton of cooking in this pot but I know a lot of people do this is a large enough size to do so but I just figured it'd be a good idea to let you know that I am doing typically freezer bag and mountain house type meals inside the pot I store the stove itself like I said this is the Soto wind master it's a fantastic stove the piezo ignition is extremely reliable I am using the Tri flex pot holder it actually comes with the four flex if you buy it now every option I've seen this is very good quality it's just far too bulky for the types of things that I'm doing but although the Tri flex does have a smaller profile than the 4 flex even that itself out of the box is too large to fit down into a 650 pot so actually I have shaved down the edges just a little bit just enough to get enough clearance to do that so you can see while this stove is attached to the Tri flex top it will not actually fit down into the 650 tokes pot so I simply used a grinding wheel on the end of a drill and slowly but carefully ground down a couple millimeters on each of the three edges of the Tri flex pot you're just taking a little bit of material off it's still very stable and the pot still sits great on top while allowing you to the entire thing down inside the pot obviously you don't need to perform the modification that allows this to fit into the pot as one single piece this is easily removable it just is one less piece I have to keep track of now so I like having it all compact efficient and that's how I've tried to set up my backpacking system for minimum pieces minimum chance of loss and failure all those things so you could easily do it just like this and not have to mess with that modification at all the control on this stove is unbelievable it's a does have a micro regulator so no matter how few full or empty your canister is you'll always get a consistent flame which makes it great for cooking and windy or cold temperatures it has fantastic boil times there's tons of videos out on a how efficient and reliable the stove is so I highly recommend this setup I found the easiest way is to hold the top of the stove still in your hand while rotating the fuel canister on this minimizes any leakage around the valve when you're attaching the stove to the canister then simply turn on the regulator spark the ignition and place your pot on top Here I am blowing on the flame from the side to simulate wind you can see how the tall bowl shaped design of the stove protects it from the wind and allows it to perform very well even in extreme conditions I started out using a jet boil it is a fantastic stove it obviously is just very heavy and very bulky so it was just too much for what I needed I didn't feel like carrying that weight on my back all day long just to have a mountain house meal at the end of the day so that's the reason that I've switched away from the Jetboil although I do love that system I flipped to the opposite extreme which is the BRS 3000 as you can see there's no protection along the ridge from for the flame so any variability in your temperature or any wind whatsoever is just devastating for the stove it becomes very inefficient and just wasn't something I felt comfortable relying on so the minimal extra weight from the wind master is very worth it in my opinion the spoon is just a titanium long-handled polish bowl spoon I am a big fan of the spoon over the spork and then also the long handle allows you to get down into the corners of the mountain house meals especially I think it definitely makes eating much easier the polish Bowl makes for much faster easier cleanup that's another reason that I do a lot of freezer bag meals and mountain house meals because minimizing time that you're doing dishes and cleaning just takes away from time you could be hiking or relaxing or all those types of things so this allows for a very efficient set up minimal pieces minimal cleanup and it's extremely light this is just a quick shot of putting everything together just wrap the stove with a light load towel this just protects the of the mug getting scratched up all the time and it keeps everything nice and quiet so it's not jangling around in your backpack all day and then cover the whole thing with your band it'll hold it together and throw it down in your pack I store the pot inside my liner of my pack my spoon goes down into my food bag and the cannister goes into the outside mesh of my pack so I'll be hopefully posting a couple videos of some of my favorite trail meals here after my next upcoming trip to Cuyahoga National Park so stay tuned for that feel free to critique this tell me what you think could be better or how you like your setup and thanks for watching
