Lester Sumrall Biography 1913-1996

this is the story of a man of faith a man of vision a man of miracles a man who ran the race tirelessly a man who ran the race to win from the poor boy who on his deathbed made a promise to God to preach the gospel to one of faiths pioneers the last of his generation to have known the great men of God Howard Carter and Smith Wigglesworth planter of churches around the world a pioneer of Christian broadcasting author of dozens of books and tracks educator of men and women who shared his vision for the loss and when most men were finished with their life's mission a man who was called to minister to the least of his brothers and sisters this is not just the story of a man's life and deeds this is a celebration of a man's legacy a celebration of Lester Sumrall and his legacy of faith a man's story really begins when he realizes his purpose in life so it was when a 17 year old Lester Sumrall lay dying up tuberculosis I was lying there in a kind of a coma and the doctor came in and he he tried to get a pulse on me there wasn't any he tried to get a drop of blood he couldn't find any he put his instruments all over my chest and he looks at my person says there's no sign of life and the boy says I'm sure he'll be dead in two hours doctors usually know about how long you're gonna live and this good family doctor he's slightly missed at UC because that was 500,000 hours ago and he's been dead himself for three or four hundred thousand hours so actually it's not what man says about you it's what God says and God says live you can live and if God thoughts they live you can die but in that moment I saw a vision of a coffin on one side of me and I said in my spirit I could feel that God was saying that yours and I said I don't like the looks of that and I'm too young to get into a coffin and I turned my head and there was a big Bible on the wall open and God said if you preach I'll let you live I don't want to preach I don't like pictures anyway and I turned my head and there was a coffin God said in two hours you'll be there that's yours he was given a choice of dying or preaching Lester Sumrall made the decision that would not only save his own life but also changed the lives of countless people over the following six and a half decades so I turned my head back to the wall and there was that Bible open God said if you don't preach that's your honor that's your coffin and something happened and I don't believe any preacher in history has ever been able to define on the inside of me down deep inside of me I suddenly said Lord I'm sorry for my rebellion I was wrong I'm sorry for my sins would you forgive me of my sins would you cleanse me and if you would do that I will serve you and God said Bible will you preach I said I'll be a servant I'll do anything you asked me to do and I dropped off to sleep my family stood around to watch me die because the doctor said I'd be gone in two hours and the next morning I opened my eyes there was my mother looking down upon me you know very carefully looking yet to see if I was still alive you know and I looked up and I said mother I'm gonna be a preacher and she knew I was gonna die she knew as full of the devil you know but she didn't know I'd been born again that night and that a new nature come inside of me the mystery of salvation took place that I can't understand I just suddenly don't lie anymore don't steal anymore I just suddenly had a had a great change that took place on the other side of me and I was a new creature in Christ Jesus the young evangelist was ordained in 1933 and set out preaching throughout the south he was joined by his sister Leona during the early years of his ministry preaching a message of salvation his calling to a worldwide ministry came when he received a second vision from God a vision of the world's people going to hell quarter large schoolhouse about 12 miles out of Dyersburg Tennessee they had three or 400 people in the auditorium and I was sitting on the side and suddenly I didn't I had another song leader and he was leading but I I didn't see him I saw thousands it's Japanese I said I was seeing a vision and didn't know it you know I said isn't it beautiful then I saw Chinese Mongolians Manchurians Tibetans they were so beautiful all just in the natural garb Indians Africans South Americans Europeans millions and they were all going the same way and I was fascinated with it and then I saw a big curve leaving this I ask God what this was he says that's the road of life and everybody's on it this is it that is the road of life says nobody goes that way everybody goes this away so I I said well all right then I saw a big curve off the road and a few million of them were getting off the main road were they going and the Lord says that's the Saints they're going to have off the road of life they're going into heaven singing you hear them singing singing and praising but he kept me right above the main stream of life here and suddenly we came to the end of it there was a precipice there and below was the lake of fire and I could see it and when the people of life got to the end of the road of life and saw that they were damned the lake of fire was there they began to blaspheme like thunder like thunder and then they begin to pull their hair out by the roots they began to call their faces to blood squirted and curse terribly and then they hit the lake of fire was straight under and never came back they they were gone forever and that place you couldn't see them anymore and then there came more and more I said gut you shouldn't show me this I don't like it and he says the reason you don't like it is because you're to blame for it that I said no this was holding that fishing I said I don't know those people how can I be blamed for those people in Africa I've never seen them how could I be blamed for the people in Japan I've never seen them and God quoted to me from Ezekiel 3 chapter 3 verses 17 18 and 19 if the ungodly committed ungodly deeds and he dies in his ungodliness he should perish but if you do not warn the ungodly of his ungodly deeds I will require his blood at your hands and I saw blood running through all my fingers I said take it away take it Oh take it away God said I cannot take it away I said who can take it away he said you I said what do you mean he says if you do not warn the ungodly hobbits ungodly teach he said you have to go to Japan I never dreamed of that you have to go to China Korea manchuria Tibet says I don't even like the people in Tennessee I want to go to Florida I want to go back home stay home but the Lord didn't respond to that because the Lord never responds to stupidity and I waited that he said to be in my will you must go and warn those people of their sins you're not responsible to save them I save them but you have to warn them and that's become conscious of their sins I laid on us when I came back out of the vision everybody went home yeah yeah farmers said hello left took the lantern with them my song leader he went with him and left I don't know why never one of them ever spoke to me about that night I was sitting in a schoolhouse without one bit of light in solid darkness thinking Chinese Japanese Mongolians what am I gonna do and God spoke to me and said you have to love those people I don't know how he says I can put love in your heart and God that night cost me to love all the peoples of the world in Eureka Springs Arkansas Lester Sumrall met Howard Carter for the first time regarding brother Howard Carter he was the president of the Hampstead Bible Institute in London in fact he inaugurated and founded it and he was praying in England and the Lord says I have a companion prepared for you this is you you will be very busy when he comes and he will be a stranger when he comes and these are the words he will say I'll go with you over the highest mountain I'll go with you through the deepest valleys I'll go with you through the tempestuous waves of the sea and be your friend and he he wrote all that down and showed it to people in England he said look what God says all this is you're going to get married he was over 60 years old and was a bachelor he said no no it says he and when I met him in Eureka Springs that I kept meeting he had spoken and the meeting and walked out on the sidewalk and I just said started to say god bless you and I did you do and when I did I said I'll go with you over the highest mountain I go with you through the deepest Valley I go with you to the biggest Plains I'll go with you over the Tempesta I said no I wouldn't do that anyway answer yes or no he said would you come to my room so he went to his room and he had a friend named Stanley from it was the editor of a very large magazine in this country and he went into the corner he had a little black book of prophecies that had all come true and he opened it up showed him says this is what God said he'd bring me as a companion because Howard Carter was on his way around the world and said a stranger when he comes and so forth and so he said it seems good to me so they came over to talk to me brother Carter says what do you think about missions one said I'm a missionary I just hadn't got out there yet and he said what part of the world are you interested in well I said when I saw the vision it was the whole world and that's the whole thing that God had told him and he said you have fulfilled a prophecy in the words that you said on the sidewalk so as you are you willing that we go together I would do the teaching on the gifts of the Spirit you would do the evangelism and get people saved and you will pray for the sick the young American and the great English teacher and theologian started a relationship that would change not only each other but everyone they came in contact with the United traveled through Java Singapore Hong Kong we went up to Tibet wrote him you for three months going into the bed and back went all through the middle of China took a whole year and then we went into Japan before China was mouse eating I just arrived with his troops to make it come in as Japan had already filled North China full of troops thank God Shaq was trying to run and to get on boats and covered what they used to call Formosa and we call it Taipei now and so we went all through the troops nobody bothered s people had great respect for Americans in those days and I preached in high school auditoriums and university auditoriums almost for a whole year from place to place had a wonderful time and of getting people saved and healed in the country of China and so really he was my tutor but more than that he was over twice my age and we began to love each other you know until I would have given anything for him and he would give anything to me we became so close together until people couldn't believe that two countries like England and America could have two people that got together and really cared for each other we weren't just traveling companions in him before we were Paul and Timothy now Smith wheels were the Great British apostle of faith met Lester Sumrall when the two of them were speaking at the same meeting in Wales but by the time we got to England it was their National Conference and brother Carter let me speak at night as an evangelist because I had been with him all this time and brother wiglesworth was the day speaker on a date teacher he was teaching and and so he he heard me the first night and came out after I got through it said young man you need to come see me well I says had no doubt it I'd like to do that because I've heard about him all my life you see and he said you're welcome to come I said when he says you can come anytime and as often as you want to but I arrived at his front door they had door knockers those days and you'd hit it and there was two pieces of metal hitting together and so here he came to the door he looked like a Philadelphia lawyer brother he was trimmed there's even though he was in his early 80s man I tell you he was trimmed and so he looked at me he said what you got under your arm I meant why do you have under your arm I asked well I have an umbrella here have a newspaper here he says you can't bring that paper into my house he said doesn't permit lights in my house it says it's full of lies he said it ler he could arouse his each's he said it learn Mussolini were both being held soon and and and I don't want anything about it in my house I just bought the paper I hadn't read a word of it just was stuck in the bushes and I said anything else he said come on in so I came in and in that first session they served me lunch there arrived about 10 o'clock in the morning in stage until about 2:00 or 2:30 went down caught a train door where I was going to preach that night and so just liked each other his stories were hilarious you know of how people got healed and and and blessed in San Francisco and the great bread I glad tidings Tabernacle dr. Craig was a pastor there and Wordsworth is conducting this great revival meeting and he said to me he said on a Sunday afternoon the place was jammed and packed with people and said I told those that were very sick they were not even expected to live to come on from were on the platform and give them some special attention they hands on them and he said I went to pray for two or three and and and a doctor was sitting by a man and and I said that's what's wrong with you and he did he was in your sermon he didn't speak London English and said who took and the doctor spoke up for him and said he's dying of cancer says we best brought him here and a very faint hope that you might be able to bless him and he said where's the cancer he said in his belly brother he wound up like a baseball player and whacked that man in the belly with his fist and his hands dropped down beside the little Hospital cot and the doctor screaming my god you've killed him you've killed him we're gonna sue you and and we reverse that I didn't stop I just said shut up to the doctor and you can own down the line praying for the people and about 10 minutes down the line sure came this man and yet on a hospital coat it has no back to it you know his behind was hanging out and before all those thousands of people sure he came running down the line yelling I'm healed I'm healed I have no pain the swelling has gone and I'm healed by the power of Jesus and the doctor was right behind him saying he heal he's healed and so Smith Wigglesworth to tell me a story like I can clap his hands and he was so happy that somebody had been blessed and I was too with all my heart I sought for the miraculous power of God I wanted to see his power and anyone that had had the power of God in their lives I wanted to be as close to them as I could with the onset of World War two the two friends from distinctly different backgrounds were forced to Park and spontaneously we we both stood up and faced each other he was about my height face to face and he leaned over his head up a little bit and I leaned my head over toward his chest and he began to cry big tears rolled down his face hit my head and rolled down my face and he began to say I bless you I bless you with all the faith that I have in my heart I bless you with all the compassion and it said my soul and I just stood there trembling as he told me that I I could be the one that had all of his spirit that he had within him to bless the world with and then he suddenly stopped he says I see it I said what do you see and because we were both right now he says I see hospitals emptied nobody in them all the patients are running down the street screaming and crying and yelling I'm healed and the doctors right behind them are rejoicing in God saying yes we have no patience there all he wants it that's wonderful he said I see uncounted numbers of people coming to Jesus in various countries being saved he said it would be the greatest and gathering of souls in the history of mankind and I just listened to him and then he said to me he was a very tender-hearted man he said to me said I won't be here he says soon I will have to go home to heaven but he said you will be here and you will see what I'm talking about with this new anointing on his life the Ministry of Lester Sumrall reached a new dimension of power thanks to his relationship with Smith wheels worth in 1952 after a successful series of Crusades in the Orient Lester Sumrall was called by God to move his family to the Philippines it was in Manila where he saw that the delivering power of God could change a nation in the Philippines there was a little girl that was bitten bitten by an unseen human spirit that nobody could see except she could see it and the Lord told me to go and cast it out of her and I wouldn't cast that spirit out of her and there were six doctors and been a bit present at that time and the head doctor put me in his car and rushed me to the mayor's office of the City of Manila and said mayor my god the devil is dead and I said when I mr. mayor really that's a small exaggeration he said the devil's not dead but I said that little girl in prison has been healed he couldn't believe it she cursed a doctor and he died within one day she cursed the head of the prison he died in four days just saying you will die and they were all afraid of her because because these two deaths that she pronounced death upon them and they died and and and they were begging for anybody they asked the Catholic Church to come in the Cardinal said he had a bad coat and he never did get there and I was the only religious person that ever did make it there and it went on for three weeks with the strangest thing this world has ever known taking place and the doctors were very inquisitive they were all-american trained and they they just didn't want to throw her in a Cell they wanted to know what motivated this strange stuff and and so when we cast it out we went in the mayor's office and the mayor said what can I give you well I said I don't want anything what do you mean when he says I have to give you something you this girl the doctor says is free and that says uh what can I give you now unless there's nothing he says well I got to give you something it says you've blessed us so much I said well let me have a place out in front of the City Hall here and hold Crusades he said what night you want it I said night I said I wanted for six weeks he says my god does it take that long to tell a story and I said well I can't tell it all in six weeks but I can try so he's signed a piece of paper that we can have the the park right across the street in the city hall and so we moved in there and we had that little girl that was healed in prison and the headlines were about her every day to see how she was getting alone first we had 10,000 and we had 20 and we had 30 and we had 15 and we had 70,000 they came from all over that nation they came in carts they came in buggies they came riding animals they came in cars they came every way a person could come to that meeting and in six weeks time we saw 150,000 people give their hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ the successful Crusades were followed by the building of Bethel temple founded by Lester Sumrall this church is still thriving today I have a personal feeling in my heart that anyone who wishes to do something strong for God should have a church jesus said the gates of hell the strongest thing the devil has cannot prevail against this church so the most powerful thing in the world is his church as a church planter and pastor Lester Sumrall has left a legacy that will continue into the next century or until Jesus comes again churches around the world o their existence to the Holy Spirit working through this extraordinary man his legacy is a pastor in South Bend started in 1947 where he led South Bend Gospel Tabernacle later renamed Calvary temple a church that still thrives today later he established Christian Center in South Bend now known as Christian Center Cathedral appraised the distinctive dome with its huge sanctuary also houses the offices of the Lester Sumrall evangelistic association the enormous outreach of lesea ministries is a living testament to the vision of Lester Sumrall with the heart of a teacher Lester Sumrall was always involved in young men and women who were interested in ministry his years of experience as a missionary author preacher and evangelist naturally lent themselves to the teaching of God's Word through the life of Lester Sumrall world Harvest Bible College today known as Indiana Christian University continues along the path blazed by dr. summer all a prolific author of more than 200 books and tracts Lester Sumrall wrote on hundreds of subjects dealing with Scripture prophecy the supernatural and human nature and personality as well as first-hand accounts of fighting spiritual battles around the world these books which represent Lester Sumrall written legacy have been translated to numerous foreign languages and continued to be a blessing to people around the world man and land a man of prophecy a land of prophecy Israel's hold over the generations of mankind proved no less powerful - Lester Sumrall having visited Israel dozens of times including living there with his family during the 1956 Sinai war he had come to know the land and its people intimately in 1956 I decided I wanted to learn more about the land I wanted to know what a Sabra was so I've moved my wife and my three sons to this hotel behind me the Kings Hotel it wasn't completed at the time the elevator wasn't working yet we had to walk up to our flat that we had there we lived there for seven months I kept my car parked right in front of the hotel there because I wasn't this much traffic in those days the only people in the hotel was the United Nations and myself and the people that owned the hotel didn't like the United Nations so we had a real good time my three sons were all the way from six years old up to about twelve years old they went to the British school over here and it was so interesting to see them drag around the little Hebrew children you know you'd look down and you'd see my youngest son Peter pulling on the daughter of the men that owned the hotel and here they were going and she'd come back speaking English and he'd come back speaking a little Hebrew but we live there during some very dark moments for this country we were told by the American ambassador that we had to leave because of the war the sunnite war I said sir I sorry but you did not pay my way over here and I have a return ticket so I don't need you to get back home and I am not leaving if he cursed me on the phone and said you should get out of this country it's at war well I said that would be interesting excepting I already know who's gonna win he got so angry he slammed on the phone and called me another name after that but we stayed during the war I am a journalist and I had my credentials from the from the hebrew government from the jewish government and I would went down through the Sinai where the war was on I had two officers in the backseat and they had their machine guns with them and in the front seat I had a Swedish friend who was also like myself he was a writer and so here we went through the sunnite and when we needed fuel and there were no no filling stations we'd fill up to a tank in one of the military minutes they stopped we had a rubber hose with stick in his tank fill up my tank and my new car that I had brought over from the states and and wave our hand and did go one way in we'd go the other I guess we're the only people in the world that ever took a fewer from the military without any payment for it but we saw the most amazing evidence of war there until we saw the two captured people by the thousands Egyptians not any of them had on shoes they were running through the sand when they were found so they threw their shoes away you said what did you do for seven months here this was a church at that time and I spoke in that church two or three times a week over the YMCA which is just behind these buildings I rented their Chapel every Sunday night and spoke on prophecy you'd be amazed at the people that were interested in prophecy during a wartime you know so we had great crowds and great fellowship sitting on the porch you see behind me I studied the life of Jesus we have the largest Jesus library here in the YMCA they say the largest in the world and we would pull from there the books from written by many people over long periods of years that we might have an understanding of the one that was crucified here and also we wanted to know about this new people who had come to possess the land promised to their father Abraham and it was a joy deliver these people and when they saw that we refused to leave the land because we had free transportation by the American government I've had them to kiss my hand on the street and to embrace me on the street they said you're the only ones that stayed everybody else ran away and I was so glad that I stayed and my family stayed and everything went out very well and we were very happy for him but this was home for seven months behind me and we love the family Jewish family they were from Iran Persia at that time they were from Persia and they solo person carpets that they could get into the country and made a lot of money with Persian carpets and made no money for the hotel they finally sold it to some other company and now it's a conglomerate part of a large combine but we lived there and we loved it and we're so glad that we could love the nation bless the nation and pray for the nation over the years Lester Sumrall personally led thousands of pilgrims to the Holy Land sharing his love for the land and the people while sharing God's special purpose for the city of Jerusalem his love for Israel was communicated to millions of homes via the lessons taped on location from this picturesque land champions of the Bible came alive through his detailed character studies and the lessons drawn from them were always pertinent to daily living it was in Israel that Lester Sumrall received from God his vision for using radio and television to reach the lost with the gospel i sat there asking God what he sent me to Israel for and loud and clear for my inside God said you're responsible for taking 1 million souls to heaven my God who could ever do that he says I will open the channels of ministry for you radio television Crusades and through these means and that of inspiring young men to go forth with a same spirit I place within you you can bring 1 million souls to heaven so sitting right here overlooking the valley here I made a commitment to God I says Lord with your anointing and your blessing and with your wisdom I will seek to bring a million souls to heaven so from that time until this time almost every day of my life I have looked for those million souls to take to heaven deeply involved in television we own 11 stations at this moment we're deeply involved with shortwave we have three mighty shortwave stations that covers over 90 percent of the total population of the world and with my ministry I go all over the face of the earth the people may not realize it but we're not there as a casual evangelist we're there with one directive on the inside of us a million beautiful immortal souls for heaven if you could pray for me every day it would be that you and I together and I told the Lord sitting there said Lord there that that's a job is a little too big he said you will have to learn how to plow deep and how to plow wide he said if you go down and watch an Arab plow with a camel at two miles an hour but the wooden plow with a little piece of metal down on the end of it he doesn't go far in a day but look across it the Israeli 21 mighty cutters you know in his plow so he's not plowing one row he's plowing 21 he's not growing at two miles an hour he's going at ten miles an hour and a few moments he's over the hill and gone to another place you must learn to plow deep bring up the best there is in the soil and plow wide the whole human race needs God needs help needs blessing so if you would pray for me every day pray God give him a million souls and if you do that I'll thank you and heaven will thank you and with us all together we shall win a million souls equipped with this vision Lester Sumrall founded WHM EFM in South Bend in 1968 103.1 FM is still going strong broadcasting the gospel 24 hours a day to the area with God's miraculous help WH MB TV 40 in Indianapolis was purchased by lassie in 1972 the saving healing delivering message of Jesus Christ has been broadcast to central Indiana continuously since then the longest continuous service by a Christian television station in the country the heart of Lester midnight and in a room on the top floor of the Jerusalem Hilton Lester Sumrall receives a vision from the Lord God's people are dying of hunger and at 10 minutes to 12 I had a shaking and in my body I woke me and I was sitting up in the bed going back and forth and I said Lord what is this and he said I want to talk to you first what it's late at night he says I still want to talk to you right now listen would you just tell me what you want to say the Lord said yes he said my church in America sings about my second coming preaches about my second coming and they live as if I'm never coming I burst into tears and it rolled out of the bed and pushed the covers around my wife and went into the next room and closed the door and I said god this is terrible he said well I want to talk to you I says about what he says Matthew chapter 24 but totally and fully fulfilled now wasn't gonna do that but he says it will be and nation shall rise against nation and it's going to be all over the face of the earth and and he said now and there would be earthquakes all over the world shaking the world of pieces there would be pestilence such as cancer and AIDS and other awful diseases that consume the body eat the body up like a cannibal and then there should be famine nobody said until I come I don't want my children to love me who say our Father who art in heaven give us today our daily bread I don't want them to die of hunger I said yeah just get the Salvation Army busy on that and I'll give them an offering and I noticed the Lord said nothing and that's when I realized he didn't respond to stupidity just keep your mouth shut and let God do the talking and he said now listen the Red Cross and the United Nations and all they give to anybody but says I want you to give to those that nobody loves that's my church and especially in the third world countries I said I don't know anything about this I've written 150 books I have 12 TV stations I have radio stations have a church I don't know anything about feeding anybody I never fed anybody the Lord never answered that either and you're in trouble you see so I said well what shall I do and he said I want you just to feed my people giving it to the pastor and the pastor's of the people and the people to their neighbors and friends and he said there'll be revival such as you've never seen before on the face of this earth I said well if there's going to be a revival I'll do it from its inception in 1987 lesea Global feed the hungry has blessed churches to bless the needy on every continent thousands have been fed physically and spiritually it was Lester Sumrall vision that the food and supplies always be in the hands of the believers therefore by Lucy's own plane and ship God's blessing could be poured out in troubled and poor areas Rwanda and Burundi Bosnia and Croatia Albania and Liberia God's compassion became Lester Sumrall spacian a passion to reach out to touch to nourish and to teach Lester Sumrall met Louise layman in Argentina she was a missionary from Canada and he was in the middle of an evangelistic tour of Latin and South America preaching the gospel and living among the people after a courtship conducted mainly by the exchange of letters the two were united in marriage on September 30th 1944 their 50,000 mile honeymoon was actually a missionary journey through South America each of them sharing their compassion for the lost of that continent through the years as Lester and Lewis Sumrall shared their lives together they also shared God's message of love and power to millions around the world in my study of civilization just because a doctor dies don't mean we have to start with herbs again we take all of his scientific learning and go up from there but in religion sometimes we don't do that we start over every generation our job is to save the world and we just keep starting over and I said Lord what can one do about it he says love young men trained young men teach young men and past the sword to them and say go get him to know that your life's mission will be carried on to the next generation by your own children is a blessing afforded to only a few but all three are involved in ministry Frank ministers at Christian center in South Bend praying for the sick and counseling Stephen oversees the daily operations of all the outreaches of lesea ministries and Peter heads up the broadcasting operations started by his father their mission as always will be to carry on the legacy of winning a million souls for Jesus every day I call this luster son as a young and angry lad and there seemed no hope for me from the sickness but I had all that was me decision to be made on my ones when a man that's my vision from and my heart is filled I one night while
