them days are [Laughter] over I can make you um when you talk to the guys in Metallica I mean your name comes up all the time Motorhead com still absolutely absolutely my word um I'm gratifying when did you uh first meet the guys well L was president of our West Coast fan club one time I was only him his mate in it I think you know he came down say about 1978 or 9 no it would have been after that would have been 80 81 I guess when I first met me down at the Old Beverly Sunset hotel which is now gone it's a parking lot for Tower and uh he came in with his friend you know tried to matches drink for drink which is a foolish thing to do when you're about 14 you know and uh he suddenly said um could I go to your room a minute and I said yeah right and he went in there and he very Gentile man vomited all down this so I moed him up and S him back out again for a little devil but I mean that's how long I've known him yeah a long time was it your stere kid was he very into the metal thing yeah yeah he was and that's like we all were you know I mean I was into rock and roll he was into whatever you know whatever fires you up is good what was the when they um what was the scene like then in terms of the music scene you know was a little different in terms of orientation of rock and all there was different in quality for a St I'll tell you that um B in those days were bands they worked the road you know these days a lot of bands don't work the road at all they just make records which is to me five guys going in the studio and chumming up together for a while every year you know they're ain't a band a band has to be working has to prove itself in front of an audience otherwise it's not a band they did that that's oh yeah Metallica did that up the ass man Metallica played a lot of shows you know and a lot of low Dives you know you can find that magic marker all over the place they uh I think when you look back at their career no radio play no music I mean for first I same as all of us in this genre you know I know you guys don't have you know like the heavy metal hour that was the only show we had right Headbangers B and and they dropped that and what do they replace it with game show right on guys that's indiscriminate broadcasting for you I'm afraid I think MTV is largely come to be the thing he set out to fight and I think it's a shame you know I think VH1's trying to in that absence trying to create they don't know what to do yet but they're trying to create something they're still the same company don't they absolutely that Nickelodeon and about three others me and D Snider went upstairs on TV and threatened to together physical violence if he didn't play on you single when he when D had his own show they pulled his show shortly after that may have had something to do with the incident yeah well what you going to do de and I just still going and that guy's fired does um did you guys play shows together or back Metallica no yeah no we did we did just three shows of them with Guns and Roses a few years back was that that guns and& Roses tour they were doing yeah the uh we did the Rose Bowl and uh the Coliseum and Seattle Dome yeah when uh James talks about that tour that comes in Roses tour I guess it was a lot of you know two different Camp's kind of banging heads a little bit that uh well we were only on three days we didn't really get to see any of that it was just like it was very I don't know see TS these days Ain't Much Fun you know I mean they run like a military operation which is not anything to do with rock and roll you know like nobody backstage you know five different passes different colors you know and all that this [ __ ] man that's got nothing to do with it rock and roll is supposed to bring you crazed joy and Rebellion for no apparent reason for its own sake right that's what started out as music to push your parents off with and now it's becoming so sanitized and so deadly you know you been backstage of the tour these days being like being backstage in bloody AST you know oh well we have 12 bottles of mineral water man take your pick you know well thanks guys you know don't you drink it all before you go on stage I I don't get that you know with your audiences with Metallica's audiences is it a More Level Playing Field with the fans people come to see you well it's more like at least they met us you know they Haven met most people people are so far away from their crowd now I think they should be ashamed to go out and go we love you all and all that you know when they haven't even met any of them for the last 20 years you know I think that's vital to stay in touch CU then you find out what they want to see on stage you learn which songs of yours they like and which they sort of are okay you know you find out what they want to hear you know and you can engage your sist accordingly and give the people what they want which is also supposed to be the name of the game you know I think both James and lives was telling us a little bit just the whole like heavier music whe whether it's metal or rock and roll or whatever heavy metal is rock and roll it's just a different name that um there was no separation it was kind of like you know you're on state it's not like I'm up here and you're down here as a crowd it was like you know performer and and and the audience are just one big Level Playing Field I'm you you're me a lot talk about that connection there's a lot of that with Metallica they always had that very strongly in the early days I think they lost it a little bit now because of their success you know it's taking them away necessarily from the crowd a little and I couldn't believe the amount of fluck they got for getting their haircut you know I mean it's up to the person and for Christ's sake individualism what is what they've always preached and what I've always preached as well you know and what most of these bands have always said and what the crowd always says among itself you know individualism is supposed to be important but if it doesn't fit in with my individualism I don't like it right so that's very weird you know I I couldn't believe it people said oh the new album's rubbish they cut their hair in the same breath you know shame that but you know it's up to them and it is up to them you've seen James perform live how would you typify him they invited me on stage at loloa a couple years back that was funny I go on stage and they're all like this I said oh guys you know Jesus rise you know I dubbed the had a good time I wouldn't sing it though CU it was their show you know they did a good job at my birthday party you know talk about the birthday part was that a surprise yeah I didn't know they were going to do that I knew they were coming but um they they're all got wigs on dressed as me like bullet bolts on the tattoo on the wrong arm all four of them and LGE removed his wig early in the show cuz he he gets very warm you know but otherwise Jimmy look more like me than I do I went on stage and watched Jason nearly blow his lung out trying to sing We other the road crew you know cuz I was with the guy who sang it originally standing next to him must be very fro you know like he's trying to overcompensate you know nearly blew portions of the lung out there but they did very good job they did 45 minutes of our old songs you know which is obviously what they did when they first started you know actually yeah that was their whole thing they didn't have their own song so they played what would be you know considered more obscure stuff that still you still obscure today even as we speak um they they write good songs now though I mean I saw the L of poia I thought they were incredible I thought they were Unstoppable just great great band professional you know on the musical side what are the ingredients that make for great Heavy Music well first you got to believe it you know because that's the first thing a crowd finds out they they can sense that you know if you just going on going guys you know won't won't wash mostly some people have got it off to be a good C man but you know not many and the other thing is you've got to be loud Heavy Music has to be like what's the point of soft Heavy Music you know I mean if you want soft music listen to a mirriad of other people right you don't need us to do that too and all this unplugged stuff you know so I mean we wrote them on Acoustics guys you don't sit down with a guitar Turn Up full and Hammer it when you're writing a song you know so uh I don't know yeah you have to it has to be a presence too you have to have a Charisma because what you're playing your vocals are very often inaudible unless you're at such a height you can afford massive PA so you going to I mean they don't come to listen to the perfect sound they get that on the album they come for the event right so the Charisma is the event and to a large extent but the only people with Charisma don't know they got it you know which is one of the L great things you know that's cool with that music with that stage approach CR can any room be whipped into a frenzy well if they like you yeah if they don't I guess you could whip them into a frenzy of hatred you know but whatever a frenzy is okay by me as long as they get into a frenzy I don't really mind you know uh answer the family if it's for me tell them I'm in the bath the Chinese bath this is going this is good W that just press all the buttons good look kill bite you know when it seemed like with Metallica you know early days you know that the metal thing was definitely happening what was was there a was the scene filled with a lot of whenever a scene you know has a hay date it gets filled up with a lot of posers right away you know there's like the real stuff and those the the March Violets you know they call them Jo joined later how would you basically how would you typify that scene then well usually the good ones are the ones that last anyway you know you get flashes in the pan but like they always get them but mostly the bands who don't really who aren't really into it will change to the next Trends so they be gone anyway you know and uh the people that stay with it are the ones that you keep listening to I think CU I mean we we don't have a large fan base in America but the ones we have got would kill for us you know and and that's exactly as it should be cuzz we never let them down you know and I think if you see a band following a lot of different musical trends for the sake of it just after it happened which makes it kind of pathetic you know then people people know that and the audience is not stupid you can sell them a lot of [ __ ] but that only means you're a good C man it doesn't mean they're stupid which is like you know record company stroke come man you know I mean usually we got lucky with CMC they're very good in terms of uh what are you guys doing now we just did an album about six seven months ago snake bite love you and uh we don't sell a lot of Records in the States because we we're never going to get a play and we get a very little TV time I might add and uh we don't got our videos played much but ever since Ricky rman was fir Play that video uh we just doing what we do you know and if they don't buy them then we do another one till they do buy them you know but everything we do we're satisfied with which is something can't be caught out there in terms of lyrical content for the your music is there a prerequisite does it have to be storytelling about a certain subject no that's not there is no rules you make up the rules as you go along if you got control I mean if the record company is coming in the studio telling you what to play that's very expensive for you because they want the money back later and it's also very detrimental to your original idea you know because they don't know anything about music they work in an office I know about music I don't go in the office until until them out as highest secretaries right you know so don't come in the studio and mess with me you know do you think that with both your and their career that that's been the case of basically masters of your own face not masters of your own Fai not a lot of interference yeah master of your own destiny I think so I'd like to think so I don't see any change in them I mean they they've tried to change their music a bit but you have to if you're going to surv you have to explore different Avenues you know I mean if it doesn't work you I go back and do another one you know within the thing you do right cuz we never made an album that sounded like a recycler the last one in my head anyway I mean I I know it wasn't you know it might sound that to a Layman I don't know I can't get in that place you know CU I'm in this place do you get slammed I know they get slammed for for selling out and changing and not being the same every time out well yeah you get that but that's from people who wouldn't know their ass on their elbow anyway you know those people who want their they want to be 16 for the rest of their life and they want the background music to stay the same too right and I can't do that for him you know because time goes by you can't stop it can't slow it down we speed you up got to check notes here for a second pyro accident up an Olympic Stadium no okay I don't believe you had much fun that day no I don't think so either mind you Michael Jackson could tell him a few things about that Pepsi I've seen that film man he I've never seen it you know that oh he's uh whatever whatever the publicist press dictat it wasn't half of it I mean he's you know he's enveloped yeah Rich burn over here yeah look at this thing it pretty sad I don't think he was real happy about it he must scream well he wouldn't be would you you'd think to yourself not at all two War here did you know Cliff yeah can you talk about Cliff what kind of guy was he he was just like a good time guy you know he was just like he pretty amiable you know drank a lot you know but I me in those days Metallica's reputation was like not musical I mean they spent months in England doing an album the first album and uh they mostly I don't know when they ever recorded because I saw them all of the day and night in the Boozer you know like shitfaced as as the N you know as we say I don't know when they were ever sober enough to record it must have taken them ages but uh Cliff was well into uh you know the OD pint and that of whiskey or whatever I like C he was all right I like Jason too you were around Jason when he was uh first joined the band yeah yeah I met him he was like it's like that new singer with priest you know all their dreams just came true which is a great thing you know you don't get much of that I know they kind of gave him a hard time because it was some sort of write a passage well you got to Haze him a bit you know I mean you can't just leave him join and be a star right away you know got to knock him down a bit send them for a few can cans of stripe paint you know or sky hook or something usual stuff you know they did that to me at a factory I went and go and get me what was it a left-handed claw ramama I'm up there at the stores you know I've left under CL please hang on there son there all morning slowly dawned on me I wasn't as quick in them days they say you get slow as you get older isn't true how long uh and this is more just a speculative thing how long can they do what they do as long as they want to I mean as long as they want to be in the operative word because if they don't want to you'll know you know people start leaving when it [ __ ] up anyway you know that's cut 1988 was briming with promise before years end the Chili Peppers were reeling from l
