all right Slade is up yeah that's right Phil Taylor January 19 take one and take one but we won't show the hole in my shoe no we won't your own module no we'll just put it in the outtakes ha ha ha the one who knew us you know but it's almost getting there do you know legend these shoes are 35 years old there you go probably older than most of you guys and only one hall I don't know Wow good shoot British British craftsmanship music I've got to go soon though because they're falling apart what inspired you to take up the drums shoes 5 British shoes I wanna punch Bobby jiggle the drums well he was inspector it was less of an inspiration than than a command by my dad because I I was getting in trouble with the law you know being I was like a skinhead and I was fighting and that rebellious age and now so my dad had to come getting out of the leads police station wants too many times and gave me a good hiding in and then about couple of days later he turned up with a battered old snare drum and said yeah here you bastard I forgot it something you can you can hit this and he booked me like two whole weeks of lessons one a week at Leeds music college and so I do to flee went along you know being really pissed off because I always bang on my mum's pots and pans I was a little kid but who do you know um so I went along and the teacher that I had was an incredible guy but still the story but he was 90 years old and he was a world war 1 drummer and after the second lesson he said well Philippe he said I think you've got a natural talent for blended rooms you should really take more lessons you know and I thought alright so then I was decided to go to him so I really was my dad that got me into it but I'd up yeah so I suppose I'm going to thank but not in a way I mean because he wasn't done out of good or anything like that you know but then I realize that a natural aptitude village rooms and I enjoyed playing them did you then go on to listen to drummers and get inspired by players so the million your stupid question in it no isn't a [ __ ] trombone players yes cause I did okay well not know specifically yeah I mean I've never been like a fan you know of any particular one person whether it be a drummer or a movie star or anything like that so I mean I've always listened to music as a whole you know the whole song and if they happen to be a fine drummer in the band it usually stood out or maybe not because I mean some of the best woman the eyes like was out to like all the old tamil Motown stuff from like the 60s late sixties early seventies and there was a session drummer called Bernard Purdie who I believe played on quite a lot of those sessions and he was really it was really great he used to always you know that's why that's why I picked up the ayat' thing from and then but yeah I wasn't a lot of drummers really him I mean my dad was a big jazz fan and so what jazz records he had you know I'd listen to not have choice because he played him young but um since I stood since I started taking up the drums and then add just to snare drum for about like year 18 months and then he bought me a bass drum if you could call it up well I could do spin but you know and stuff like that and so I just listened to my dad's old records and my sister was five years old of me she was like listening to the Beatles and stuff from America you know stuff like that so I listened to her record so I was going to be of a mixture nothing off the radio of course nothing on English radio well unless you unless you listen to Radio Caroline or something like all radio look Sundberg which I did occasionally on pain of death from my dad not undercut Julia's not bloody radio turn that bloody ray off yes dad moving forward several years later and the double bass playing huh that you used on song overkill can you tell me how you came up with that yeah well I was just in rehearsal well at the time we were just doing a few odd gigs here and there not really making any money well not making any money at all costs out of the word really and then but we have a manager at the time and had a share in this rural place so I was just rehearsing I just got a brand-new kit and which had two bass drums of course and so I was practicing on my dual bass drums and when I was just going you know like that and then I added a snappy I was just basically just practicing that scene if I could keep time you know and and I didn't let me happen to arrive while I was doing that and called it to them they said they stood out outside the room and they boasted our that's that's [ __ ] good you know to each other well else would they say do write and um let's go ahead and start jamming with him back that we could have a number based on that so they came into the room and you know sort of mouthed to me keep going keep going and they plugged in in and that and let me start playing and then Eddy and that's how overkill came about really the last couple weeks we've been interviewing a lot of metal musicians that whose music has been sort of categorized as being thrash metal and the drummer's in particular have identified your drumming styles being a main influence especially the double bass and that sort of intensity and the speed I mean why do you think these young kids you know these teenagers were latching on to the sound you were creating and going yeah that's exciting that's what I want to do I don't want to do that but I want to do it better could be eliminating myself here we do censor well I don't know you should ask I mean I don't know why I guess maybe because Motorhead we're the first comedians far as I can remember we were the first band to play really fast you know I mean all the other coming at the time we just taught us that we were just a lock band and then when the term heavy rock came in then with we're a heavy rock band you know um but we have to play just that little bit faster than everybody else um but I mean as I say again it wasn't it wasn't intentional at all and back and see wow I would be the influence of a lot of thrash metal kids because all the bands that came after us a lot of them you know they they intentionally wanted to play that fastest as it was for myself I never intended to play intentionally that fast that's just how it ended up you know um so well I mean it's very nice it's a great compliment to be to be cited as someone's influence a lot of people still say that now and again and I'm very flattered by that at the end of the day what is heavy metal why is heavy metal well heavy metal can be likened to this straw see heavy metal started way down here and it went all roads in a way it bent and freaked off to this angle and came down like that and then awesome one day it was gone and the universe still exists and we're all here I'm here easier and that's what heavy metals all about it's also about this stuff or not this stuff and now moving on next question I don't know why the metal is all about same as before I'd why is it why is it every metal about you're the journalist you tell me it's full-on I guess isn't it it's yes I mean up no compromise no no holding back you should be you should be answering the questions and I mean asking because you hand answer him yes it's full compromise no holding back it's like in your face man Oh what they do all these LML God in your face my eyes are your face yeah no compromise oh it's ass metal huge great big mahjongg by metal women with massive knowledge so cross across a major Grogan's the mitten see performances trouser hoses on the fart and rastan from the ass and wholesome mittens your worry off that's heavy metal so we won't perfect was that good enough can I go now yeah thank you everybody in goodnight
