the holy spirit be with you all and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned against you show us o lord life through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever [Music] a reading from the book of wisdom the godless say to themselves let us lie in wait for the virtuous man since he annoys us and opposes our way of life reproaches us for our breaches of the law and accuses us of playing false to our upbringing let us see if what he says is true let us observe what kind of end he himself will have if the virtuous man is god's son god will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies let us test him with cruelty and with torture and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after we have his word for it the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] my friends [Music] is [Music] ah [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james wherever you find jealousy and ambition you find disharmony and wicked things of every kind being done whereas the wisdom that comes down from above is essentially something pure it also makes for peace and is kindly and considerate it is full of compassion and shows itself by doing good nor is there any trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it peacemakers when they work for peace so the seeds which will bear fruit in holiness where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves you want something and you haven't got it so you are prepared to kill you have an ambition that you cannot satisfy so you fight to get your way by force why you don't have what you want is because you don't pray for it when you do pray and don't get it it is because you have not prayed properly you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires the word of the lord [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] ah [Music] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark after leaving the mountain jesus and his disciples made their way through galilee and he did not want anyone to know because he was instructing his disciples he was telling them the son of man will be delivered into the hands of men they will put him to death and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again but they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him they came to capernaum and when he was in the house he asked them what were you arguing about on the road they said nothing because they had been arguing which of them was the greatest so he sat down called the twelve to him and said if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last of all and servant of all he then took a little child set him in front of them put his arms around it around him and said to them anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me the gospel of the lord [Music] [Music] wisdom this is the theme of this sunday's readings the first reading is taken from a book with that very name the book of wisdom there are several books in the old testament which group together we might call the wisdom literature as i say one of them has that very name but there are the others ecclesiastes ecclesiasticus job they teach us something of a contrast the contrast between human and divine wisdom perhaps most of all in the words we hear today the words we hear from the book of wisdom today the church places in the context of thinking about the lord's passion the biggest contradiction perhaps of them all when we see human wisdom and divine wisdom at their furthest apart it just doesn't make sense life coming from death let's remind ourselves what it says the godless say to themselves let us lie in wait for the virtuous man since he annoys us and opposes our way of life the church has always understood these words as referring to first of all the pharisees the tax collector the um the pharisees the scribes who wanted to put an end to the lord because he opposed their power he opposed their way of life he saw through their hypocrisy human wisdom is seeking human wisdom cannot comprehend god without god revealing himself to us god's wisdom teaches us that all our striving all our efforts all our conniving and plotting even without him it won't come to anything wisdom that very word is one of the names given to the second person of the blessed trinity to our lord jesus christ he is the wisdom of god the son of god is god's wisdom he teaches us he instructs us he wants us to live with his wisdom a wisdom which s seeks the good of others which puts others first which entrusts itself to god rather than putting our trust in ourselves if that first reading teaches us the contrast then between divine and human wisdom saint james helps us to incarnate divine wisdom in our day-to-day lives we heard from saint james again today in the second reading we have been doing for a few weeks now the general theme of saint james's letter there is only one unlike saint paul there's only one letter of saint james is this that our faith has to express itself in our works in good deeds without good deeds without putting our faith into action what evidence is there of any faith whatsoever our faith if it doesn't transform us if it isn't expressed in our lives what is the point and saint james you could say speaks of wisdom he is the new testament book of wisdom in one sense he even speaks of it today the wisdom that comes from above is essentially something pure it makes for peace it's kindly inconsiderate it's full of compassion and shows itself by doing good the wisdom that comes from above is our lord jesus christ he dwells within our hearts he is present in our midst he speaks to us today in the scriptures he feeds us today with his body and blood he is the wisdom of god instructing us instructing us for what so that our lives can be transformed and be fruitful in good works and what's the point of that so that others may come to know god's wisdom to live by it to follow it and so come to the homeland of heaven and so we come to the gospel in the eastern rights of the church whenever the gospel is proclaimed in the divine liturgy the mass it isn't introduced as we would introduce it with the lord be with you a reading from the first word used is sophia wisdom in today's gospel jesus too doesn't use the word wisdom that he is of course god's wisdom speaking and he speaks of the wisdom of the cross the utter contradiction it looks like death it looks like destruction and the disciples fail to understand this wisdom this is the second of three times that the lord will speak to his disciples about his forthcoming passion and each time the disciples reject it the first time peter says lord this must not happen to you today what happens when the lord speaks about his passion the disciples immediately start arguing about which is the greatest the third time james and john will be wanting to claim the places of honour for themselves never do they understand what jesus is saying to them the cross is the ultimate path of humility the ultimate path of self-sacrifice this is the path laid down for us as disciples of the lord jesus even places a child in their midst the most humble of all god's creatures he teaches us humility he teaches us self-sacrifice the absolute opposite of worldly wisdom that it is that which builds up the kingdom of god it is those things coupled with the good deeds which saint james speaks about which paves the way for heaven and therefore the cross is supremely logical by following the path of humility we follow the path of god's logic not our own because life does come from it death is conquered in the past week we celebrated two feasts which really put this into as an example before us on wednesday we celebrate the exaltation of the cross and the day after our lady of sorrows it seems strange to speak of the exaltation of the cross this instrument of torture and death but it is that instrument which jesus willingly took up was willingly nailed to to give his life for us willingly why so that we could share his glory the glory which belonged to him by right which he freely laid aside so that we could share it our blessed mother mary our lady of sorrows understood the logic of the cross understood divine wisdom more than any of us ever have that's what enabled her to stand by the cross to experience a living martyrdom by the cross of her son she followed the path of obedience the path of humility the path of self-giving keeping nothing back for herself it cost her greatly but she didn't think twice she is now our mother sharing our sorrows praying for us throughout those sorrows and difficulties so that we can share with her in the triumph of her divine son we ask for her prayers today to follow that path of humility the path of self-sacrifice the path of divine wisdom shunning worldly wisdom with all its wrangling all its plotting all itself seeking shunning it it has nothing to offer so that we can share in the exaltation of christ in the glory of heaven [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Music] ourselves [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh wow brothers and sisters called to share in the mission of christ in proclaiming the kingdom of god let us turn in prayer to the father of all for the needs of the church and the world for the church that she may be an ever-present reminder of god's loving mercy in a world often torn apart by hatred conflict and violence lord in your mercy hear opera for those in need in particular for refugees and exiles and those unable to find shelter and safety that they may be welcomed with understanding and love lord in your mercy for those involved in the work of evangelization your call and do your will through christ our lord amen [Music] yes oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] foreign [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father receive with favor o lord we pray the offerings of your people that what they profess with devotion and faith may be theirs through these heavenly mysteries through christ our lord the lord be with [Applause] let us give thanks to the lord our god is right [Applause] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his pastel mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for his own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty deeds for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the wholesome powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we are claimed [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] see [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting that your sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Applause] proclaim your death therefore o lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint anne and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may the sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray oh lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and marcus our bishop the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassion or merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil coming saturday is the diocesan pilgrimage to walt singham and i know a good number of you have signed up to come we have had to arrange a second coach due to high numbers and the consequence of that is there are plenty of spaces on the second coach so it is not too late although if you do want to join up today would be um a good idea and certainly by tomorrow to fill in a form return it with the payment for the place on the coach if you are coming to wolfsingham next saturday please note this is not on the bulletin please note that the catering facilities at the shrine are much reduced from previous years there will be hot and cold drinks available and and small snacks just like biscuits and chocolate but um there will be nothing there to constitute lunch so you really do need to bring it with you otherwise you will be incredibly hungry by the end of the day and if you know of anyone who is coming to wolfingham please tell them it's better to hear it a few times than not at all after mass today for the first time since march last year there will be coffee available in wheeler hall i believe this sunday there's no charge for it so do please come through everyone is more than welcome to get to wheeler hall if you're not aware you can go via the ambulatory here or it might be easier if you leave the cathedral go up the side of the cathedral and enter from outside but both ways are available next sunday there'll be a special collection at the end of mass for the svp some vincent de paul this month being svp awareness month and there are more notices which you might want to see about faith in action for our young people about the missio mass if you're involved in that about revelation again for um provided by the diocesan youth service the cathedral does have a notice board it's in the corner over there so do please take a look at it as ever the bulletin is also available online thank you all and every blessing for the week ahead the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the holy spirit go and announce the gospel of the lord thanks be to god [Music] [Applause] my [Music] [Music] [Music] squeeze [Music] oh [Music] jesus [Music]
