Enter Sandman is probably one of the easiest rock songs to play (hell, even I can play it, and I'm shit), but he made it a bit more interesting. It's almost a shame that they didn't play him the song with the drum tracks removed completely, just to hear his take on it.

SUPER fascinating watching a craftsman at his craft. The wealth of understanding he displays is absolutely stunning.

I think his Jazz one is also really worth a watch! They reference it at the start of the video. Larnell is truly incredible - here's another vid of him playing with Snarky Puppy

Has he been in a coma for the last 30 years?

"I'm going to miss that." And he did.

If we're going to do rock, why not some Danny Carey or Neil Peart?

hey everyone the last time i was at drumeo dave had me play a fusion tune that i had never heard before which was a ton of fun [Music] so we wanted to find something similar only this time i wanted to play a style i am not known for playing metal so to do this dave has challenged me with what he says is one of the most popular metal songs of all time that i actually haven't heard before sorry guys um it's enter sandman by metallica and i know what you are thinking there's no way i haven't heard this song before but i'm not lying when i say i've never heard or played this tune in my life so i'm gonna take a listen and i'm gonna give it a try are you ready cause i'm not but either way here we go i'll take more volume okay i'm assuming it's one two three four [Music] a little more volume okay got some aggressive problems going on i'm glad i got two uh atom and a half there was an upbeat on that crash before okay [Applause] [Music] probably again okay there's two shots and then it's serene right with a snare okay no other shots all right [Music] build a push big high hats right in the push [Music] still open high hands okay [Music] and we stay in that new key okay i guess it's a pre-chorus [Music] okay so it's a shorter chorus and go back to the main theme [Music] wow sounds like double around the interlude [Music] [Music] with [Music] [Music] okay right then right okay okay then we're going to guitar [Music] solo kill it [Music] right right now i'ma get you [Music] oh interesting oh okay third time around in that shot i gotta go play some silence and go to the all toms always on the up crashes okay [Music] around the vocals right the bass drum first before that up crash all right oh double chorus he's not shortened okay [Music] right and then we're gonna i'mma miss that [Music] okay i'm gonna take a quick review here so i know that there was some high hats in the beginning on the mm-hmm i'm assuming that was maybe twice a round that feels like a good length but i can't remember um after we do that twice i'm assuming that we go back to the toms or we go to the toms make it feel big i think it was just like a quarter note bass drum i think was happening on the kick it was something like that uh we were hanging out there and then there was some kind of a cue maybe it was a drum fill which means it's on me to play something was happening and then we got into that other section we're just we're just open hi-hat so it's probably even all the way around if we're thinking song form and something that feels comfortable to listen to and then when we get into the verse we're rocking and the theme in terms of uh being able to hit those upshots what i was hearing was slamming on the bass drum not slamming but hitting the bass drum on the downbeat in order to catch any ups right uh the one tricky thing or at least thing that caught me off guard was the half time i didn't expect that i didn't expect the halftime and i think it probably happens three times if i remember correctly and then out of that half time somehow which i can't remember at the moment we go back and we go to the chorus uh we go to the chorus sounds like dun dun dun dun [Music] i think we go to the interlude twice right let me know in the comments how am i doing okay um and of course we go to the verse we do the chorus similar thing um we go i think we go into a guitar solo at that point and then we do the modulation i think we do the half time i can't remember the halftime was twice there was something about the form at that part once we got past the guitar solo i feel like there was an interlude where there was speaking and some crash hits at some point i can't remember if it was a chorus and then that interlude or if it was the interlude and then we went to a couple of choruses uh what do you think should i listen again or should i just hop on it and see what happens let me uh phone a friend dave yo what's up buddy uh help me out here should i should i listen again or should i just try a pass let's do a pass man yeah let's try pass all right okay you're good friend man um okay let's make it happen [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] to include everyone with them [Music] in [Music] [Music] now [Music] something's wrong [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] wow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] in your head [Music] is [Music] [Music] today [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes yeah so i know that one shot i was like where is it where is it ah that was the money one but thanks thanks that was take two of enter sandman it was a little more fun to be able to actually have an idea of the form and understand what was going on but i hope you enjoy it and you probably clicked on this and didn't really know what to expect from someone like me playing a metal song but it happened it went down i hope you appreciated the effort and it was great it was fun for me i'd never played a metallica song in my life so i would just urge you you know to understand that you don't have to put yourself in a box you can learn about all the different styles and genres that exist in the world at the end of the day it's about respecting the music and respecting the culture of that music as well you don't have to be of a certain descent to play let's say latin music you don't have to you know come from jamaica to learn how to play reggae but at the end of the day these musics or these styles or these genres you know they exist as an expression as an opportunity for people from different parts of the world to sing their soul and to let you know you know how they're feeling at that particular moment and so regardless of what part of the world the sun shines down on you just know you don't need to lock yourself in and you can learn whatever it is you want to learn so move in love move in peace and move with respect so thanks again for joining me on this video if you liked what you saw hit the like hit the share and also subscribe and let me know in the comments below what you thought did i hit all the shots did you like how i hit some of the shots do you think metallica will let me sit in can we do a virtual concert i don't know what do you think [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
