[Music] hey guys what's up i'm just editing this la now lewis plays into sandman video and i thought i'd just leave a quick note at the top of the video uh just a disclaimer that i did not in any way intend to offend or compare the two drummers lionel lewis and lars ulrich at all both legends in their own right and anything i say in the course of this video was just in the moment and uh yeah genuinely total respect to both drummers and uh hopefully we can keep it like that in the comments as well but we'll see all right take care enjoy hey what is up youtube andrew rooney here i'm a full-time drummer and drum teacher here in auckland new zealand and wait what lana if you've been watching my channel you will know by now that lionel lewis is absolutely one of my favorite drummers in the world incredible player la now lars larnell metallica marnell into sandman i have been holding off on watching this so this is absolutely my first time seeing it i have heard it is really really an impressive video as you would expect with la now and i've also had a bit of inside word that it's gone so well that lanell is putting together like some kind of jazz fusion metallica project and as soon as the borders open back up they're going to be going on like a a world trip playing like jazz fusion versions of metallica songs i think the tour are starting in amsterdam so they're off to the nether netherlands [Music] guys before we get rolling please consider hitting the subscribe and like buttons it really helps me out and uh without further ado let's check out larnell lewis playing into sandman i did have other videos paypal and patreon requests lined up for this date but unfortunately it's sad but true and larnell has put out a new video and nothing else matters course requirements on my videos good set of headphones magically make a coffee appear [Music] lana lewis playing metallica let's hit it hey everyone the last time i was at drumeo dave had me play a fusion tune that i had never heard before which was a ton of fun so we wanted to find show-off something similar only this time i wanted to play a style i am not known for playing metal so to do this what a great challenge with what he says is one of the most popular metal songs of all time that i actually haven't heard before sorry guys um it's enter sandman by metallica and i know what you are thinking there's no way i haven't heard the song before but i'm not lying when i say i've never heard i'll believe it this tune in my life so i'm gonna take a listen and i'm gonna give it a try are you ready because i'm not but either way here we go this happens to me so much on this channel where people say oh there's rubbish man he's he's definitely heard the song before um rush or led zeppelin john bonham you know there's no way the last one was grand funk railroad there's no way you've definitely heard this song before i haven't i would not be here sitting here saying i've heard a song i have heard into sandman okay i know the song really well i've taught it a bunch i'm not out here saying there's stuff that i don't know that in reality i have that's just ludicrous i know plenty of people especially from gospel backgrounds no idea about half of these bands and of course vice versa it's just the way it is another quick pause just to let you know at this point of the video la now was actively listening to the track so he literally just listened through the entire track i'm not going to include that in my video but i strongly recommend you check out the original of course and watch his process how he absorbs information how he thinks of structure and all those things but i'll leave that to the original video and i'll just skip through that part just so we can get to the actual plane and you can hear how la now played this the first time after hearing it oh yeah those metallica toms n of two and a four i think it is there crescendo y'all know what he's saying when he's saying push anticipation right so basically a one before the one and a four there yeah yeah and the displaced snare crash too it's a bit to unpack he's got this you know he's got this i am surprised here he's not writing anything down that does surprise me i wonder if he's going to do another listen and write out a cheat sheet we'll see anticipations chokes that would not be enough come on this this is not enough surely they've got a photographic memory there is having like a photographic memory versus facility right does lana have both chops plain everything facility but a photographic memory it's a long song this is a long song to take one listen and then try and play it he's got to have another listen and do a cheat sheet no way no way he can nail all this what do you think should i listen again or should i just hop on it and see what happens come on man let me uh you got this phone a friend dave yo what's up buddy uh help me out here should i should i listen again or should i just try a pass let's do a pass man yeah let's try pass all right okay you're good friend man um okay let's make it happen wow now just before he has a shot at this i there's no way i would do this i mean i've done uh hundreds of covers gigs where i didn't know songs and you know you do your best you try and you know you catch cues from the singer or the guitarist and you know you pick up things or sometimes people even yell out halftime bar of seven or something like that but yeah just to be on camera and hear a whole song you've got no one helping you there's no visual cue he does have a sheet up here though so what's on the sheet um well it's manuscript as well i don't know i'm not saying he's cheating but um yeah this is just it seems impossible to me unless you've got a photographic memory wise yep larnell he's got enough chops to play into sandman for sure of course but yeah let's see how he goes uh structure wise this is absolutely fascinating [Music] he even got the little triplet what that offbeat i don't think was there was [Music] it [Music] nice it's very different to lars very [Music] [Applause] it's it's different it is different [Music] absolutely fascinating oh okay even got the anticipation yeah there are there are little things here where this is not i don't think he's trying to play note for note i think that would be insane if you were trying to play note for note what the drummer played on the original recording on one listen so there are some different things here we've got a different feel too it doesn't sound like lars it doesn't actually sound like metallica to me at this point now i might get a lot of hate for this [Music] i might even get a few unsubscribers a few shocked shocked looks it does it just does not sound like lars lars to me lars is a legend he is a legend drummer he is the guy that everybody likes to kick sand in his face these days for some reason in the scene i think it's because he's so wealthy and his band has sold you know over 100 million albums so you know easy target but um yeah he's a legend he's a legend of the scene he has inspired so many people to take up drums but um yeah this is just super interesting complete completely honest nothing against lionel he is amazing he's an amazing drummer this does not sound like metallica though to me i don't think it's supposed to i'm just saying what i what i'm feeling so far [Music] pretty close parts twice [Music] he caught that one like lasted the other one i think he went boom boom boom and that one was [Music] with the displaced snare crash hit that is what's on the recording they didn't get their anticipation that time [Music] la nelly put in his own flavor in here [Music] ah tom build up okay [Applause] [Music] okay i think he called that himself that you know by the end of the guitar solo it was getting a little bit hazy and yeah kind of what just went to the wrong section there should have just gone back to the tom build i'm not listen i am not critiquing lionel i'm just observing what's going on i'm not saying he's a bad drummer or he's messing this up but yeah it's just uh just observations [Music] up [Music] hey come on [Music] ah [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's where the tom park comes back isn't it yeah [Music] give us a give us some flavor larnell [Music] getting a little bit of flavor at the end here [Music] beautiful that's what i'm talking about yeah so i know that one shot i was like where is it where is it oh that was the money one but thanks incredible thanks that was take two of enter sandman it was a little more fun to be able to actually have an idea of the form and understand what was going on but i hope you enjoy it and you probably clicked on this and didn't really know what to expect from someone like me playing a metal song but it happened it went down i hope you appreciated the effort and it was great it was fun for me i'd never played a metallica song in my life so i would just urge you you know to understand that you don't have to put yourself in a box you can learn about all the different styles and genres that exist in the world at the end of the day music and respecting the culture of that music as well the man you don't have to be of a certain descent to play let's say latin music you have to you know come from jamaica to learn how to play reggae but at the end of the day these musics or these styles or these genres you know they exist as an expression as an opportunity for people from different parts of the world to sing their soul and to let you know you know how they're feeling at that particular moment and so regardless of what part of the world the sun shines down on you just know you don't need to lock yourself in and you can learn whatever it is you want to learn talk like this slight listen to barack obama move in peace and move with respect so thanks again for joining me on this video if you liked what you saw hit the like hit the share and also subscribe and let me know in the comments below what you thought did i hit all the shots did you like how i hit some of the shots do you think metallica will let me sit in can we do a virtual concert i don't know what do you think [Music] so just for a change lionel lewis hits us with just his incredible skill and musicality as a drummer and yeah we're just left sort of thinking about things you know he always leaves you thinking lana lewis that little speech at the end absolutely incredible um and how we can just aaron come out with this gold just dropping gold gold gold just such fantastic tips that you need to write down you know you need to write them on your mirror or put them in a sticky note in your car or something so good plane wise look i'm going to be completely honest that's all i can do it didn't sound like metallica it didn't you know he doesn't tune his drums the way that lars tunes his drums he doesn't hit likewise hits completely different am i saying lanell's not as good as lars no i'm not saying that at all it's just an observation it is so interesting and just credit to lionel lewis that he is prepared to put himself out there like this and play a style of music that he doesn't know or he's not familiar with or a band he's not familiar with and just be filmed plain so quickly and getting very little chance to digest the material it's just super interesting really cool how he as always it's really cool just watching his process how he thinks of music he looks at it very holistically i didn't see him i thought he might have had a bit of a cheat sheet there for the actual plane but when he was playing i don't think i saw him looking at that at all so yeah that is not if i had one pass at a song i would be making notes that's just how i work he obviously works differently or maybe in this case that was just not the thing that they were doing they weren't taking notes they were just just sitting and actively listening absolutely fascinating stuff guys if you enjoyed the video please consider subscribing and liking the this particular video it really helps me out and um yeah i'll catch you on the next one [Music] ciao [Music] you
