Lady Glenconner on The Crown and Helena Bonham Carter Playing Princess Margaret | Loose Women

I've been reading your book and quite often we have authors on here and I think this is a very rare occasion when I say I can't put it down oh it's absolutely extraordinary well we've got something in common haven't we because you met my husband I did me twice and it's a good job I met you before the show in makeup because I could clear this with you in advance he was incredibly bizarre can I call you oh please do well I met him on holiday in st. Lucia and I went to his house and had a few drinks with him and then the next time I met him he was in charge of a very beautiful hotel I thought you're gonna say elephant coming that is coming up because I was having dinner not wishing to name-drop but you do in your book I was having dinner with Bryan Ferry and your husband pitched up with the baby elephant I loved it I used to come to the mic when I was cooking all the things used to come put her trunk through the window and I used to give a banana but I I always have to have bananas there because I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't had a banana you've already gone for my hair now you might have noticed when we showed the little little film just a second ago with beautiful pictures throughout your throughout your life there's a picture of the Queen's coronation on the whole our parents were friendly with the Queen Mother and the late King and my mother was a lady-in-waiting she's just been asked to be a lady-in-waiting and so we were the only mother-daughter in the procession my mother was walking just behind me and we dressed together which was all about how wonderful I remember waking up it poured with Rome that morning but I remember waking I was sleeping on the floor because it Lander was packed there wasn't a room to have and a some old uncle the enters his flat with one bedroom so I mother obviously head to the bed and I have the floor and I remember waiting I'm seeing my coronation dress which is so beautiful because during the war you know it was still rationing about the series the crown oh yeah obviously what what how well I've never watched it but well I'm in a dictation yeah I watch the coronation but I live in the country we've got no broadband I haven't even got a mobile I mean I've got no followers because of this book which I'm amazed I can't believe I could have which is actually very nearly a best-seller would be part comedy partly and part I can't believe this woman has agreed to this because one of the most extraordinary stories in the book he's that you're you reached the early 20s without getting married because you were engaged and then you got cruelly dumps yes well then you have to go off and your mother mate she don't flog China and you're driving around Britain in a van so I was the only traveling sales or later woman travelling salesmen on the circuit and I was in all these really grim traveling salesman hotels it's about a cabbage cigarette and I used to sit there rather nervously reading a book and there all these traveling salesmen come in they start a conversation with me and then of course amazed when they realized who I was and then a trolley would come in at 9 o'clock in the morning at night and they'd always say will you be mother and so there I was being mother which was obviously wonderful training as you say you became lady-in-waiting which is the name of your book too - Princess Margaret but I wanted to sort of ask you first of all we touched on on the crown the reason that this book came about was because Helena Bonham Carter came to ask you advice on her portrayal on playing Princess Margaret and you sort of as you was obviously telling her stories about their life and that sort of thing will hurt you to write all this down yeah it is like it because I've had I knew her she's a really a cousin of my husband and her father was very helpful when my third son had them terrible motorbike acts and was in a coma and she said can I come and see you I just want to talk to you about mrs. Margaret and she came she's wonderful and she's gonna be the most perfect Princess Margaret I mean she's the right size she looks right couple of years ago Craig Brown wrote a book that was all these things all these stories about princes well that part who I wrote my book because his book I'm so angry yeah with his book it was so untrue he didn't know her and what I really mind his people who write all this rubbish about people like Princess Margaret when they've never even met them and I you know she's such a friend she was so wonderful to me what do you think was the most in a misunderstood aspect about Princess Margaret when she was going to stay with somebody they'd ring me up then I could tell them a what she liked to eat what what she might like to do but if they didn't quite Olsen they didn't and therefore Sunday lunch was Bishop Chief of Police and they all the people that she used to have to meet during the week or I do know she just wanted to have a nice relaxed time I mean when she came to share with me she bought her Marigot gloves a great treat just Princess Margaret marigold absolutely I'm she said I was a bear guide you weren't earn you don't know how to lay or thought she laid all my father's she wash my car love wash my car with a buck isn't know and then weeding she bought her own weeding matter used to weed together I mean that you know she I to me she was absolutely the best friend I've ever had and we used to laugh so much I mean she's so funny and we went out when I first became a lady-in-waiting the first trip I went was abroad I went to Australia with her and it was a wonderful we have such fun we laugh so much may I ask you what your take is on the modern Royals William Kate and Harry a mega alphabet I was waiting for it and I've got home I know well with interesting because we have this marvelous nanny called nanny Barbara barns and where my children were grown up went go on to school I said why didn't you go along because I knew the Princess of Wales was looking for a nanny and I think Princess Margaret who knew Bob very well and also recommended them and we're almost sure she was she was engaged to look after William and Harry so I used to see them of course when they were little boys and there was they were charming and and you know very loving together you know that's why I felt it was rather sad this interview the other day well your book lady-in-waiting is available to buy now and who knows it may even may even be by the end of this lunchtime a best seller [Applause] you
