[Music] she's the brightest star in show business and the most talked about woman on the planet her highly controversial performances have created a unique persona and an enormous global fan base who adore her [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] her explosion onto a tired and jaded pop scene has revolutionized entertainment worldwide she's amazing which this isn't the piano it's just that oh my god now that you can really tell that what great artist I knew she was a star but I didn't know she was going to be the biggest thing in the universe by now she's the queen of the Downloads with over 10 million followers on Twitter she is famous all around the world Stephanie Joanne Angelina Germanotta she is the one and only Lady gaga the goal has never been to be famous my goal has been to be a star [Music] [Applause] [Applause] born in Yonkers New York two Italian parents Joseph and Cynthia on March 28th 1986 Stephanie Germanotta began learning piano at the tender age of four and to begin with she hated it her mother was like you're gonna sit at that piano I don't care if you play you can sit there for an hour every day just to try and control her daughter a little bit and to start with her for the first couple of weeks she didn't you know she didn't do anything she says she sat there she crossed her arm she threw a fit she said I'm not gonna do you know he told me to play piano I'm not gonna play but eventually after a while she knew she had to sit there for an hour every day she got bored and she started playing Lady Gaga actually had a pretty conservative background she grew up in a relatively nice part of the Upper East Side in New York she had two caring loving parents but they were incredibly Catholic and that's what she would build against I think that's what she found very hard but actually she hasn't turned it back on religion entirely either which is very interested something you often see by 13 Stephanie had begun writing ballads it's hard to imagine now but Lady Gaga was actually a very serious student who took her grades quite seriously was very bright in the classroom and even performed in high school musicals playing like Adelaide in Guys and Dolls it's very hard to imagine her in such a conventional role however she was very focused from an early age on performing from the age of 14 she was already doing kind of open mic karaoke nights and and getting up in front of her peers the influences Lady Gaga as a young girl were the likes of Elton John David Bowie Queen Grace Jones as well and and you can see those as well especially the glam rock side about in her music these days she was really really into pop when she was a teenager and she spoken a lot about how she remembered going to see Britney and she remembered screaming and screaming and being this kind of crazed superfan and she removes all the other people around her all the other fans screaming and screaming and crying and she says that was one of the things that made her want to make pop music exciting and ignite people's interest in it and a chance meeting with vocal coach Don Lawrence was to provide the young stephanie with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity she was in a boutique in New York after school one day just wandering around singing along to herself to whatever music was on the radio and the guy who was working in this boutique heard her singing she had a fantastic voice and said oh you should you should hook up with my uncle he's a voice tutor in New York who's just a completely random occurrence that just happened out of nowhere she was a little bit you know bit scared at first but she took the card and she went home and she made the call and the voice tutor the uncle of this random guy who happened to work in this boutique was Don Lawrence who is one of the most revered and the most famous vocal coaches in the entire world [Music] one of the first bits of advice he had for her was it's all very well to play the piano it's all very well to sing but you need to start developing and start writing your own songs and that was why she started writing her own songs in the first place [Applause] gaagh are actually went to the Sacred Heart convent which is on Manhattan's Upper East Side and actually is a pretty posh school because guess who one of the students was Paris Hilton now they weren't actually at school in the same year but they went at around the same time similar age groups and actually I introduced Paris to Lady gaga when she'd came over to London very very early on in her career I think she'd just released pokerface and the dynamic between the two of them was fascinating actually because they swap stories about being at school and around the same time they spoke about what the school was like gaga was very interest about that whole idea of Paris Hilton is like this pop culture phenomena there because there's something that fascinates Gaga about that at school she was very dedicated to her work very much into a very model student I would suppose really didn't really get into much trouble kept herself to herself didn't go with the same kind of ethic as lots of the girls that went who were just born into money and expected a lot she went there thinking that you know she was gonna work really hard because that's what she got from her parents her parents were quite well-off when they arrived in America they didn't have anything they worked really hard her father is an internet entrepreneur and he made his fortune pretty much from nothing as did her mother so they had a very very strong work ethic at home their parents expect her to do really really well and work really hard but actually what happens is she finds the atmosphere a bit stifling she's not meant for this she's kind of a bit uncomfortable when she's there she said a lot that she was bullies and the kids would tease her because she had a big nose and she was bit pudgy and her hair was stupid and she wasn't really interested in that kind of socialite life she was a drama kid she describes herself as being a weird kid after the convent school she went to university the New York University Tisch School of the Arts at admit there but wasn't really where her passion lied just in music she eventually dropped out of that music course to study Performing Arts which which suited Lady gaga much better because it was obviously music mixed with drama which is where she is now the show she puts on Lady Gaga then Stephanie met a man who was to become a pivotal force in her career rock Vasari was incredibly important in Gaga's life he's a producer who's had so much experience already in the kind of sphere that Gaga wanted to move into which is mainstream world pop domination Vasari had been writing songs for a very long time he was very experienced which was something that Gaga didn't have she was entering this industry kind of completely like as a virgin she had no real experience she didn't know anybody in the industry and you know nine times out of ten that's how you get somewhere is by knowing somebody and she didn't know anybody it was for sorry who was to give her the stage name that would be known across the globe one of the first boyfriends we know of for Lady Gaga was robbed for sorry he turned out to be her lover her manager and a co-writer of her music as well he was also the one that gave her the name Lady gaga I would love to have known what's going through his mind when he came up with it obviously we know that Lady Gaga came from the Queen song radio Gaga the story that Gaga tells is that her music producer and boyfriend Rob piss re-started used to sing radio Gaga every time she walked in the room and one time he went to text her something about radio Gaga and they put text changed radio to lady so it came out Lady Gaga and she wrote back in text and said that's it never call me Stephanie again much to her delight who sorry helped Gaga secure a deal with record label Def Jam in 2006 the aim was to release her debut album within nine months but Gaga's joy was short-lived the mainstream American media didn't want to hear about it they didn't want to know about her she was just some kind of crazed lunatic who wore leotard and width in my head her songs were about sex and bisexuality which is you know is the thing which the mainstream American media is not very comfortable with ever the label dropped her after only three months she was absolutely distraught completely distraught Roxie sari was on a plane from New York to San Francisco and during that flight she found out she was dropped and she made you know 30 phone calls to him just completely hysterical saying they dropped me this was her dream [Music] she exploded on the burlesque scene in New York with Lady Starlight who became her style inspiration really it was during those years when the Gaga look was developed and that's why when Gaga exploded she actually had something that was quite unique because she'd taken it from the burlesque scene in New York which was obviously very much a scene which pushed boundaries good Catholic girl like Lady Gaga was went to a convent school absolutely shocked her dad he wasn't impressed one little bit that she was doing this burlesque and we're not talking tasteful burlesque like Dita Von Teese where we're talking something a little bit more interesting should I say I think it's the sort of thing that any father could potentially misunderstand because actually he probably would have thought what's the difference between being a stripper or being a burlesque dancer despite the chaos surrounding her at the time Gaga was still desperate to make the big time and Fuu sari continued working behind the scenes for her with his help she managed to land a deal with Interscope Records and while there started writing songs for artists like The Pussycat Dolls Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block it must have been it's a somewhat discouraging time for Gaga right around 1920 because she had been dropped by her own record label and then taken on but as a writer not as a performer and she was writing hits for other people like you know in saying Britney Spears The Pussycat Dolls but she wasn't getting to kind of enjoy her own music herself just when it seemed Gaga might be relegated to helping other stars make their music fate threw her a lifeline and she was introduced to a young producer called me dear kayak aka red one but red one took some convincing the next thing you know he calls me tells me you know I want you to meet this artist I was like okay if she is this girl this girl artist I was like is she signed it was like you know she just got dropped but like no please really that's it I told you I don't wanna call it you know what okay just meet her and make a decision after just meet her if you don't like it I think she's a superstar superstar just meet her if you don't think so you don't have to work with her so I said you know what I was like okay I'll meet her so I met her we went to you know to the city and the Dada met her to like head west you know with glasses hair all that like hey lady gaga just the way just the way she said - I was like okay you know we just got together in the studio again and the rest is history once when it works with her they signed her the buzz was starting to go around to the music scene that Gaga was a force to be reckoned with she was poised for superstardom and being a performer writer and producer she knew exactly who she wanted to work with and that involved some of the biggest names in the business I got a phone call that there was a young artist named Lady Gaga who was about to release her record and she was a fan and wanted to write with me and at that time no one had heard of her I said please send me some of her music and I could tell they were really excited about this it's possible collaboration and got back to my hotel room listen to the mp3s and the first one was just dance secondly most pokerface and I just thought she was amazing and I also knew that she wrote and was involved in production on her songs so I I said I'd love to write with her when and they said tonight and I was on vacation at the time so I said well can we do it maybe in a weakness is enough she's going to Germany she go to Australia she's going here she's flying there and I said so you're saying tonight it's tonight or not at all yes and so I drove to Los Angeles that night and met her and she was someone who looked like they could walk on stage at that moment Lady Gaga and Michael Bolton later went on to collaborate on his album one world one love creating the hit single murder my heart [Music] in 2008 Gaga joined forces with the Pussycat Doll as a sensational opening act for the doll domination world tour [Music] dogs on the nation we're so excited it's the biggest tour we've ever done and it's amazing and we worked really hard on it so we hope you love it and we also have amazing people opening up for us Lady Gaga who's just killing it all around the world me oh we're such big fans of him so we just feel like we're in the best company this looks really good and they're helping us to doll donate that's for sure that all was a huge deal because that went around the world suddenly her popularity was growing a lot in there were lots and lots of rumors in the papers about the Pussycat Dolls will be really angry because suddenly she was huge and she was bigger than them but she's very gracious and one of the best things about Gaga she'll never ever say a bad word about another artist that same year Lady Gaga relocated to Los Angeles to finalize her debut album The Fame [Music] upon its release the fame spawned the International chart-topping smash hit Just Dance and pokerface in one week we didn't just dance pokerface well can't the boom woman like just magic he was just clicking and she's very inspiring very inspiring so it was easy the album Fame was number one in so many countries and if it didn't get to number one it was guaranteed to be in the top five gaga really did have a meteoric rise she went from obscurity to overnight international number one fame with her album The Fame ironically perhaps titled the infusion of the pot with the glam rock influence it was such a big different sound it was bringing pop back to the masses in a way that hadn't been done for a long long while but it really did put her on the map and she ended up winning Grammys she won best album of the year and she became really an overnight household name it was a phenomenal album everybody knew who Lady Gaga was the music was amazing on their Sony brilliant singles came off their album just dance every time I hear it now you just think wow what an absolutely brilliant tune that is the fame went on to garner gaga a total of six Grammy nominations and one to this established her position as a bonafide pop culture phenomenon January 2009 brought the announcement of a co-headlining world tour with legendary rapper Kanye West I'm very excited Kanye is extremely talented and I was so flattered and humbled when he asked me to co-headline the tour with me and not open for him so Thank You Kanye it's gonna be an amazing show between the two of us I imagine we'll both be broke and it would be the best genre in truth this is the most exciting creative moment of my life so far and Kanye is a truly genius individual and he's been very kind to me to bring me into arenas because the good news is that now that I'm playing with Kanye I I stay in arenas the next year I begin a world tour in February and I'll be an arena act but despite goddess enthusiasm and excitement the tour with Kanye West was cancelled however it didn't deter Gaga from embarking on her own tour the fame ball truthfully the fame Bella's as a party it's an experience it's a place for kids that love to get wasted and make art go to meet each other and celebrate the fame ball took her all around the world I've been having such an amazing time I mean I feel so blessed that I can do the fame ball around the world I'm so happy to be back in stall we had an amazing experience last time we were here and so far in Asia the fame ball has been going over really well we just did this summer sonic festival in Japan in Tokyo and in Osaka and now we're here in Korea and I'm going to do the fame ball for my fans tonight and I just love them so much [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm kind of a geek well this shows kind of nerdy I mean I'm I'm unembarrassed about the performance art quality of what I do we made an installation piece that was essentially a pair of sunglasses that you could watch music videos on and I built them out of iPods and the idea was for it to be commentary on how the iPod has changed the way we see music not the way we hear music but the way we see music as a file as a stream and maybe not everybody gets it but like I said my they look like the jackets my friends and I wore in New York and our style and our our sense of self is what propelled us all towards the fame towards that sense of we can do anything we can be whoever we want Gaga is an uncompromising life Illuma she does what she wants to do on the day and the other thing is she's prepared to pay for it I remember and we're very very early tours she didn't make any money because she wanted it to be big and bold she didn't want to do the same thing every night she wanted to introduce new costumes she wanted to have an incredible estate it's all been about launching I guess the Gaga experience again it's a very big and bold thing to do when you're a new artist who actually hasn't made have showcats the more expensive the tickets are getting very rarely see state shows as elaborate as hers she pushes everything into its extreme weather it's dripping with birds and life performance or whether it's her quite openness about bisexuality in her videos in her interviews whether it's just carrying around a teacup because she wants to see what kind of response she'll get as well as revolutionising the music world Lady Gaga was about to change the landscape of fashion image is everything to her you can easily download an mp3 but you cannot download a lifestyle so my fashion is my lifestyle my attitude my outlook on the world my position as a sexual woman this is exactly who I am and it is a way of life that myself and many others like me live in New York City in the art community on the Lower East Side and I was very very strong in my opinions about how people should see me when I first come out with my music because I knew that they would love the lifestyle I knew that they would love story of New York as much as they would love the music Lady Gaga is not just a singer she's actually like a visual performing artist who happens to write pretty catchy songs and I think the genius the phenomenon of Lady Gaga is that she doesn't just restrict her entertainment to mere singing every time we see her she's in an outrageous costume she's constantly pushing the envelope it's no wonder that designers and firms are looking to kind of get Gaga behind their brand in fact she's talked very openly about wanting to do a fashion range she says Donatella Versace is her muse Gaga's fashion style is brilliant you know I'm someone who writes a showbiz column I want celebrities who look different every time they leave the house who are outrageous and we need that there are too many cookie cutter pop stars these days who aren't prepared to push any boundaries Gaga is also said to be working on a perfume although unlike other celebrities who concoct things like Jennifer Aniston based on her favorite smells and coconut Gaga's perfume is said to smell of blood and semen those were her choices for her own scent and it'll be fascinating I guess it shouldn't be a surprise to us that that's what she chose she's crazy Lady Gaga she put some panache back into the game you know I don't know who's who there's no celebrity to know people anymore do you sit hard listening to Lady gaga some of her image is a success and that's what she's selling and that's what she's promoting and the truth is that image is gonna get boring like everything does it's in her hands the [Music] most important thing to Gaga is her fans everywhere I go in the world there are lady diver a certain quality I can't quite explain it perhaps it's a pop cultural nerve they come in hair bows covered in glitter sweating and screaming everybody's a little different in each country but for the most part there are Lady Gaga fans everywhere she's after the kids on the outside she calls him her little monsters actually when he's got my knees so he to grow that was the whole I find it so important to be now a role model and a figure and I know that that might sound strange to some people that say oh but she's so you know her clothing and whatever people may think of me I know what people some people may think of me but most importantly it's my connection with my fans she's really tapped into a very important movement it was basically a message to people that she affectionately calls freaks and trying to get people to embrace that aspect of their life and so Gaga calls her fans the people who are part of her movement her little monsters it's exactly the same thing that Glee has done as well around schools in America and it's a very important message it's an anti-bullying message Gaga's been very open talking about how badly bullied she was at school how bullies once put her into a rubbish bin I mean this is a very very inspirational message that American teenagers are current currently tapping into and who buys music it's American teenagers it reminds me why I want to do work like this so much because I look out into the audience and I hear them singing my music and and supporting me and I think I want to do everything I can to protect them because some of them are very troubled and insecure and don't feel that they fit in she wants the kids to fit in anywhere else because that's how she felt about herself when she was younger despite carcas unique persona and image comparisons with madonna are inevitable there are a lot of parallels between Lady Gaga and Madonna particularly in their early upbringing both from very Catholic families both went to Catholic school and both knew from an early age they wanted to be famous and both ended up in New York City on their own at a very young age they were kind of hanging out in the same neighborhoods with with the grunge house clubs of that day it's very similar if you look at the roots of both of these artists so I suppose it's no wonder that there are so many similarities in their performances today is it such a bad thing being compared to Madonna back in the day and what Donna was the massive icon now I've got Lady Gaga she is the new massive icon nothing can touch and nothing can stop us so why she's got influences from Madonna she models herself very very much on these strong female icons Madonna especially because Madonna was such a big influence in the 80s in the early 90s when Gaga was growing up because she's collected the gay crowd like Madonna did in the early eighties gaga's devotion to and promotion of every aspect of gay culture is legendary her outspoken views have made her a new gay icon Gaga has never been shy about proclaiming her affinity with the gay community she's a self-proclaimed bisexual and in fact once she was asked honestly what you know are you gay and she said on a scale of one to ten of gayness I am a Judy Garland 42 so she is really very much alive with the lesbian gay community and considers herself a member because of her own sexuality I would always find sort of solace and happiness when I would go to the gate clothes because they were always wild and dancing and they really loved and enjoyed me Gaga is courageous in so many ways she's obviously courageous with what she does on stage she's courageous with what she does in her outfits but she's also incredibly courageous politically in America one of the big debates is about gay rights there's a very big conservative movement which is pushing against gay marriage and it's always something that Gaga has never shied away from she's always taken it on as an issue that is so close to her heart it's just fundamentally because she believes in equal rights and she's not afraid to say so she doesn't care if it damages her career because she says what she believes she feels it was them that helped her rise a star in the first place when no one else was really paying any attention to her she was considered a gay icon they were her earliest and most ferocious fans it's to Gaga's credit that she hasn't forgotten about them you know since she became famous she has never missed an opportunity to speak out in support of equality equal rights for gays and lesbians and you know in fact gaga has kind of put her money where her mouth is she was offered a very lucrative deal with the American chain Target to sell her records however because target had been kind of vocal in voting against the legalizing gay marriage at one stage she actually pulled out from the deal and said I'm sorry I really can't work with you this is not just about a party it is not just a peaceful demonstration it is a spirit of a basic human right we are here today to defend love I'm often questioned why so much game speak [Music] I am often questioned how gay are you Lady gaga why is this question why is this issue so important my answer is I am a child of diversity I am one with my generation I feel a moral obligation as a woman or a man to exercise my revolutionary potential and make the world a better place along the way a mischievous Lady Gaga often courts controversy at a concert where her skirt appeared to ride up and before she could pull it down it really did appear that their what she was packing some heat under that skirt for lack of a better term and honestly I've watched it a million times like everybody else and it does look like there's a penis under there and whatever angle it was shot from whether it was some prosthetic thing she was doing to get attention I don't know but it caused a lot of interest initially she refused to say that she didn't have a penis which was a great thing because people would bring up new interview she'd just say I don't want to talk about it I don't think it's important if I'm the hermaphrodite or not lesbian gay bisexual transsexual groups were really really connected with her because she was saying that sexuality is not an important thing what do you care if I have a penis or what do you care if I have music it's important gaga has spoken out many times about how you know she has in fact a beautiful vagina and she doesn't have she's not embarrassed to be you know thought of as a as a man or a transvestite but she's not she's really a woman and that kind of thing so she's denied the rumors but you never know with her you never know while I was on stage all of the young boys were going do you have a boyfriend and the answer is no but I'm very busy so I would be a terrible wife Lady Gaga oh that's very nice you had me at bluffin with my muffin [Applause] with over a staggering 10 million followers on Twitter Gaga can now lay claim to being the new queen of the downloads and superstar of the digital era she's been given to pretty enormous accolade he's won as Queen of the downloads and the other one is queen of digital video poker face is now the most downloaded song since the beginning of the download chart she's just incredible she's had millions millions of downloads and with the viewing of her videos online as well on YouTube she's passed 1 billion total views of her videos online which is just incredible she's the queen of pop music in a completely new era 20 years ago 10 years ago when Britney first start out when Christina Valera starter beginning of Madonna's career we didn't have downloads we didn't have mp3s we don't have any of this we're moving into a completely new paradigm for music generally not just pop music Gaga is proving that it's translating into money's and translating into hard cash into paid for downloads she is absolutely everywhere there's no stopping Lady Gaga you open up a magazine she's in there she's on Twitter she's on Facebook she's absolutely everywhere and she got the most number of followers on Twitter at the moment or something like that there's absolutely no touching her no stopping her she is the most popular woman in the world on Twitter she has over 10 million Twitter followers the power that that gives her is immense you know that's that's twice the size of some small countries and all of those people that follow her listen to what she says and I think the thing with her as she knows now she's got that power and she's going to use it in clever ways I often say that if I was reincarnated in the 70s I'm not sure I would have made it to being a pop singer I would probably be on acid following the Beatles somewhere I love rock stars and there's very little left today but in the 70s they were running rampant so she's always thinking about the next thing she's doing she's thinking three or four videos ahead and I knew she was a star but I didn't know she was going to be the biggest thing in the universe by now in November 2009 Lady Gaga's second album The Fame Monster wowed the critics the music was slightly different on there but but still Lady Gaga still what you've what you loved about her and she was still impressing people and building that big fan base she described it as the yin and yang of the showbiz world the fame was the good side The Fame Monster was the bad side of being a celebrity The Fame Monster featured the hit single telephone a collaboration with Beyonce and at the Grammys in 2011 Gaga and beyoncé tied for the most number of nominations for a female artist in music history so excited I can't believe it nine nominations and I was told that we are tied for the most nominations ever so I feel very honoured and I believe in MTV and I'm delighted to be in Beyonce's company and I can't wait to go to the awards show and hopefully kick some ass I think it was intriguing when Gaga duet is with Beyonce I mean very different musical styles very different voices and yet they came together on a great song I think it was intriguing that Beyonce wanted to do that I mean obviously it goes to show that Gaga who's a new kid in town has some street cred if Beyonce wants to record with you I can't think of a lot of other artists Beyonc he's done that with obviously her husband jay-z but it was a big compliment I think to gaagaa that beyonce wanted to sing with her who's you know she's kind of a legend I think for Lady Gaga you know it was good for her too because Bianchi is obviously more mainstream than she is and it really kind of cemented her in the in the mainstream pop world gaga has a factory of collaborators known as the house of Gaga who advised their muse on clothing stage set and sound she's very in charge of the things she wants to project to the outside world she has this group of advisers around her stylists and cost you makers and so on who are people who she's been friends with for a long time and so she has people who knew her before who can tell her and bring her down to earth no that doesn't work no that looks stupid no that's what everybody else is doing because she needs to keep pushing this innovative edge and that's what she wants she wants to be different she wants to stand out and so by keeping these people around her who were very loyal and have been you know with her for a long time she manages to do a really good job and not just you know take on any old person that the record company wants to throw at her she keeps people who are loyal she's totally in control than what she is she's wise enough at a young age to listen to those around her to accept their ideas in the formulate them and they come at and then regurgitate them as that's where you put together a team because only teams win she cannot do it by herself the Gaga movement has changed the fashion game for every performer all female pop stars are now conscious of their need to up their stage presence what's been so great since Gaga exploded on the scene is that every other pop star the Katy Perry's the Rihanna's even the Jennifer Lopez's have have realized they have to lift their game because all of a sudden you've got someone who's genuinely pushing the boundaries in a way that David Bowie did back in the 70s so fashion and the look and the creativity and and your whole package of an artists have become very important these days it's no longer just about relief seeing a respectable pop single I've seen some the pictures of things you've been wearing over the weekend please please tell me there is at least some time where you just blob around at home in a t-shirt and jeans I don't either I'm very glad although her clothes and hair might have changed Gaga's laser focus on her career certainly hasn't along with her approach to perform its artistry she's saying that besides listening to me orally I'm visual and you need to see me visually so she's combining the two senses audio and visual and she's trying to say she's more than just a singer she is she's a performance I think she has a message to get across and she looks at each performance as a live performance art and it includes everything from what she's wearing to what she's saying to her makeup and her hair it's all connected Lady Gaga is very clever not just in music but in everything that goes around that music as well from the clothes she wears to the stage sets as well Donatella Versace is amused she never fails to surprise you when it comes to her fashion from wearing a Kermit the Frog out for it to wearing that meat dress nothing could prepare us for her meat dress it got the entire world talking it was trending all over Twitter because everyone wanted to know how exactly did it work Gaga said later that the meat dress was a statement she wanted to make about lesbian and gays that if you're not looked at for being human and who you are then you're just a bunch of meat on bones that's kind of what she said following the meat dress and hat lest we not forget there was also a steak hat on her head I can't imagine what she smelled like when she took that off however she did want to make it as a statement for lesbian in support of lesbians and gays truly Lady gaga only she could come up with wearing meat that you'd buy down the supermarket to an event and a half as well the shoes but some people say what the hell is she doing it's a performance if performance art she's taking the concept of just going to a gig and seeing somebody sing and dance around but it's just combining these two traditions with each other and making something completely new it's smart it's very 21st century one thing a lot of people don't know about Lady Gaga is that she really does struggle with her weight you know there were times especially in the early years where she was said to be overweight and there were rumors even when she was making the video for paparazzi that she'd put on a few pounds and the director was having a hard time shooting her to make her look very slim in that video she certainly seems to have conquered all of that now she's you know she's real thin but I know that for example she really likes to do cider vinegar shots and sends her assistant all over the map trying to find those before a concert because they're supposed to boost your metabolism and cut your appetite I think it's kind of anti message for her because she talks so much about acceptance and loving yourself but you don't don't be totally fooled there is a certain amount of vanity there and out of necessity perhaps but you're never gonna see a fat lady gaga it's never gonna happen [Music] lady gaga actively encourages speculation about her sexuality Gaga is openly bisexual I mean to the point where it's not hinted at you know it's loudly proclaimed from the rooftops she admits to being bisexual and she's still a performance she's still singing and we should honor her performance and her singing but instead we like to go that's what that is and that's why that is and it's a great angle to keep in the present they're very likely was a lesbian relationship of some kind between Gaga and Lady Starlight who was her collaborator in the early years the two they've never really commented on it but based on kind of some of the body language and costumes we see between them it wouldn't be much of a stretch Lady Starlight went on to design a lot of Gaga's costumes and continues to contribute today the music is catchy but I think one thing you can count on is there's always a deeper meaning there this is a bright girl and she has a message and she's kind of trying to get it across in every song she sings I think pokerface is an intriguing song in addition to being kind of a catchy tune in Rolling Stone she kind of opened up about what that song means and and said it is in fact about her bisexuality the fact that she's attracted to women and men and not everyone understands that and maybe she's you know grappling with some of it herself it was a very honest song it's it's a little graphic but at the same time I think there's a message behind it that that you know being bisexual in her mind is something that's some absolutely okay and she wanted to let her fans know that in my mind it was just a brilliant pop tune that everyone knows the chorus to everyone can sing along to I guarantee you in my pop-up poker face whilst it was on that's not an overnight sensation that's a person that sat there and persevered and pulled it off [Applause] [Music] the work ethic is so extreme and I'm not used to seeing that for these days is actually scarily hard-working hard-working in a way that most people would probably think was unhealthy and at times I actually look at her and I do worry as well because the woman doesn't sleep quite often I look at her itinerary I'll be following her around the world and I'll realize she might have grabbed one or two hours sleep in a week actually in a beard that's not healthy you know but for her she views that as a sacrifice that she is made to take her art as she calls it to the masses so she is self proclaimed but I have to agree with her the hardest working person in pop music I would definitely say she is have you ever known anyone else to tour as much as Lady Gaga she seems to have been on the fame Tour forever and ever and ever and she's planning her next tour already the albums just come out she's non-stop she's always doing something it's not a totally unreasonable thing for her to claim given how hard she works not just on the performing side but also the fact that she is writing all of her own songs and there have been at least two or three incidences where she's fainted which there's even one you can see online on video at a concert where she seems to just lose consciousness briefly gets up and finishes her song you know again to her credit but she does push herself awfully hard her touring schedule is insane she's a very physical experience she's never out of character so she's not really able to step back I think the biggest danger for Lady Gaga is forgetting who stephanie Germanotta is and that she ever existed because I don't know who can actually stay in character all the time I think it would be very easy for her to lose herself in this persona and I'm not sure that that's good for you I'm not sure that she could be you know that she could sustain that hopefully she has people around her close to her who reminds her of who she is when she's not Lady gaga [Music] I'm seeing a lot of people who I think are expecting things to happen or people who are watching you know television break their careers for them and deliver them inside of one series whether it's you know Idol or you know x-factor some some vehicle that delivers your career and so I think that that is creating a kind of a false consciousness and I think you have to have the work ethic because you otherwise you could have one hit and disappear and Gaga is not going to disappear I really really love what I do I genuinely I live and breathe and love music and my art and I'm a very passionate person and I guess when when you feel as though you would be empty without your work you don't mind you don't mind the hustle and you don't mind stopping Gaga's work ethic can be traced back to her Italian parents Joseph and Cynthia both of whom still play a big part in her life Lady Gaga is very close to her mom who accompanied her on her most recent tour her mom is said to be the reason that gaagaa actually got through the tour because she made sure she got to bed every night on time there were no drugs close to her daughter and she ate enough she actually brought her mom to sit in the audience of the view with Barbara Walters was hosting I think her mom sometimes does worry about the respectability of certain things that Gaga does that at the concerts and all of that sort of thing but you could tell when she was watching Gaga sitting down with Barbara Walters on the view you could just see the pride because it's almost like that's acceptance into the mainstream Gaga's latest album Born This Way released in May 2011 achieved at the number one chart spot in countries worldwide and was the fastest selling single in the history of iTunes shifting 1 million copies in five days this album is my baby I spent over a year and a half almost two years writing it and I wrote it while on tour on the Monster Ball tour so I was inspired by each and every city that I went to and the fans from each and every city the album is about being yourself and loving who you are and being proud and that in life you can be reborn over and over again until you find that part of you that represents you the best she actually came into capsule radio in London couple of weeks back and she was very normal she didn't have a meat dress on gym have a bizarre hat on she was just dressed in a a very long skirt a topper jacket she had a black little black veil over her head nothing out of this world I think completely random and out there it was quite fun of those she was stood in our office and we've got TVs in our office and on came the video to Born This Way and instantly she spotted it and she was just standing there in the middle of our office dancing the Born This Way and she said it's the first time I've seen it and that's the reason she was dancing as brilliant meeting Gaga was strange I have to say because I don't necessarily think she's in character but I think she's always has that weird sort of calm and serenity around her when actually her life is completely and utterly manic and what's happening in her mind you imagine is completely completely and utterly manic as well the thing about her is that she's very very forceful if she says something it goes people listen to her but she's actually very softly spoken I love you so much it's been a real joy getting to know my fans in Germany and it's always been a dream of mine to have success here as the music here in Germany and the club culture has inspired so much of my music on the Fame Monster so thank you from the bottom of my heart and I remember last year I saw one of my favorite bands Metallica play in this arena and I had lots to drink and was wearing gentleman leather [Music] one of the most endearing things about gaga is that she has a genuine social conscience like teaming up with Cyndi Lauper to promote AIDS awareness America it's a game lesbian bi transgender network was having it Warren show and Cindy was there and it was my first TV performance and I was walking down the hallway I saw her and she's like I love you round bed I really really enjoyed playing here in London and looking out into full to bring out all those beautiful faces has reminded me why I want to protect my fans so much and why it's important to be a role model of being here with the city and speaking about the 98 times about AIDS awareness it reminds me that all this beautiful young people are going and it might not be confident they might have some insecurities it reminds me that I want to be she uses her famed for good she is a real philanthropist very caring very loving person when the Haiti tragedy happened she put on a concert of radio Music City Hall in New York have raised lots of money for the charity then again when the Japan earthquake happened she came out the bracelet and all her little monsters picked up on it and and through that she helped raise something like 1.5 million pounds for for the charity we designed these we pray for Japan bracelets the day the disaster occurred and we've raised millions of dollars over the first phenomenal relief I believe in the power of music to change people's lives not necessarily my music but music in general and I wanted to do everything that I can to mobilize they used to be aware of what's going on worldwide and help one another the point is she wants to actively use her position as a pop star to try and help change the world I believe very much in charity and in fighting for good causes I went to Catholic school growing up and we did lots of community service that's something that I really enjoy doing lady gaga is quite simply the woman of the moment there is no one to touch her in terms of global fame and the more we hear about her the more appealing she becomes Lady Gaga is undoubtedly now the biggest pop star in the world she's bigger than Madonna now who was one of her inspirations but she's also bigger than all of the huge young pop stars bigger than Justin Bieber bigger than Rihanna bigger than Katy Perry she is uber famous all around the world there's no one else quite like Lady Gaga in the world right now how long will it last though how many meet dresses are they going to be how many wacky hats can she wear how long can she ride this this wave with her little monsters I don't know I'm hoping for a long time because I love her and I love her music but we'll have to wait and see Forbes magazine comes out with a list all the time of the most powerful influential people in in pop culture and Lady Gaga's come out is like either number one or in the top five very recently you cannot underestimate the power of Lady gaga at the moment you know like her or hate her disturb be disturbed by her or adore her admire her you can't you can't disregard the fact that she's making an awful big splash Lady Gaga without doubt is the most famous entertainer in the world she has incredible power how has she done that she's done that by being different and I think what's so important about the Gaga movement is she has tapped into that whole idea and she obviously dubs her fans who are little monsters and she's tapped into that whole idea of embracing your inner freak the music she comes out with is very unique when you turn on the radio and you hear a song you will instantly know it's a Lady Gaga's song she she does great pop music that gets inside your head and and you don't forget it the goal now is to remain relevant and remain memorable and stay prolific for a long period of time to change the landscape of what music is of what fashion is to keep the to in line with one another the goal has never been to be famous my goal has been to be a star [Music] you [Music]
