we've been making great progress in this kitchen building drawers and doors but now we're going to fall back into demo mode for just a minute and tear out this crown mold now here's the reason why the fact that these cabinets are down from the ceiling really dates this kitchen for years people thought that was a great idea because they could display stuff up above there but then after a few years I realized one that it takes a whole lot of expensive stuff to really make that look good and the other thing is it really gets dusty and dirty if you don't pay a lot of attention to keeping it clean so we get calls all the time for people saying I want something to make it look like these cabinets go up to the ceiling now here's the great news we're going to use the same frame and panel detail that we've been using on our doors to build that detail it's just pocket whole joinery you know you just cut your parts out drill your pocket holes and screw it together just a little bit of sanding and you're ready to go and we're just going to follow right around these cabinets now one other thing that we're going to do is we're going to lose this because it kind of comes down yet makes the room feel smaller so we're going to go ahead and tear that out while we're at it and our frame and panel detail just follow right around here it's no secret that I'm a huge fan of framing panel construction all the trim details I can create using one simple technique with my Craig G now this is going to be one of the panel's section that goes up above the cabinet's where we're getting rid of that shelf detail by the cabinet's but I can use the very same detail to create a panel back for a bar or put panel lens on the cabinet's that's a couple things we're going to take a look at a little bit later on the video this is also the very same technique that we use to create the doors so it's really just one set of skills that you have to learn and almost limitless applications around the house so I'm going to start by putting these two widest styles on each end and they're wide because another piece of trim is going to cover up part of them once I've got those screwed in then I'm going to measure over from each end and locate the other two intermediate styles once I'm screwed all those styles in place I'll take my router just like before and rebate it in the back reply would now here's one of the great things about this since we don't see the back of it I'm not even going to have to add any wooden trim strips we're just going to use a little bit of glue and we'll staple the plywood in the back almost like a door just a little bit easier now the final thing I want to do is just lightly sand this frame even if I already sand it before this point since I had it face down from it I need to go over with the sander one more time sometimes if you've got just a little bit of a crack in a joint you can fix it make it just go away by rubbing a tiny bit of glue into the joint and then going right back over with a sander the sawdust and the glue mix and make a perfect filler and that'll work for paint great and stain great all right let's go see how this looks in place so we're working on installing the panel sections above the cabinets the first thing that we did was come in and add some blocking at the ceiling so it has something for the top to be supported by and then we just tax and blocking behind the face frame that really made it simple we're getting ready to put this really nice long section in and then we'll just fill in with two corner pieces I kind of wanted to put the middle section first so the wicked' 45 under the two corner pieces and lay them back in place so let's take a look at how this goes in it's going to be a little bit tight that's because every ceilings got some up and downs to time here we go okay now there's two other things that we're going to need to do we're going to make a very sleek small molding that goes here because our doors are going to be overlapping and then we'll make just another small molding at the top just to take care of the transition where our panels meet the ceiling this is going to be so much easier to keep clean and I'm just kind of faced these last two corners and it will move on to the next project when I was installing these panels I ran into a situation I pretty much was expecting and that is the ceilings are up and down a little bit and you're pretty much going to find that anywhere that you're working with cabinets whether it's new construction or old construction you just have to make some allowances for it so what I would much rather do is just cut things a little bit loose so that they go in at least reasonably easy and then just use moldings to cover the gap and I'm a big fan of moldings anyway because they add interest to the work that you're doing I don't like just a flat surface I like some ins and outs now because this is a lot of square edge detailing here which is extremely popular today and you classical we didn't want any kind of a rounded trim so I just made some moldings myself the first one this is the molding that goes between the cabinets and the frames that we made is just this little flat piece it's about 5/16 inches thick and somewhere around an inch inch and 1/8 wide the second one is about an inch and a half wide it's full 3/4 thick it has this nice little rebate which is exactly the same cut we've been using all over the place while we've been doing this project I'm getting ready to install these two pieces and I got to be honest I've got them cut just the way I want them but I think you're going to be amazed when I put those two pieces up what a dramatic difference it makes in the way our cabinets look you know there's nothing so satisfying is putting your hands to something and the sin that come together even if I had all the money in the world could hire all this done I'd still want to do it myself because I just love that feeling of looking at something saying I did that with my own hands
