on today's episode I'll show you an option how to fill that gap on top your cabinets where common molding is not an option so stay tuned [Music] welcome to fix this house friends if you're new to the channel consider pressing the Subscribe notification Bell so you can always be in tune on DIYs how-to videos and product reviews that I do within this channel so in this situation I just put up some cabinets on my kitchen and I have this gap on top as you can see there's no way that we can fill in that Gap with any crown molding or hide it it's because the cabinets face are flush with the cabinets frame so as you can see there is a about a half inch Gap up there and it goes all the way but it does touch the wall so if you have this situation then this video is right for you the first thing that you need to do is you need to go measure the length and the width and what I'm using here is just my scrap piece of casing from my past project this is actually half inch because that Gap is a little bit more about I don't know 5 8 inch deep I'm going to be showing you two options on this video this one is you're going to have a reveal the other one is going to be flush we'll start with the reveal first we're gonna go as far as to the end of the cabinets cover so now let's go cut our pieces on the miter saw again all the tools that I use within this video I'll leave the link on the description down below I like to draw a rough uh sketch on what the angle is going to be so when I go to my eye miter saw I don't mix up the angles my number one go-to adhesive CA glue or super glue is this 2p10 with the activated activator it's just a quick spray that will make it Bond instantly I just like to use a bead on the perimeter of the casing or whatever material that you use in this case I'm just using a type of baseboard or casing around my door spray that activator on one side CA glue on the other side and just carefully join them together because you got to do this carefully because once you put those two together like a couple of seconds two to three seconds it is going to activate and glue permanently okay once you get this together it is completely stuck and if you try ripping it it's gonna rip out so just be very careful take take your time when you're doing this and as you can see it is nice and joined up together so before we go further down into this video I just want to point out a few things like for example this cabinet that we're working on like what I have now the cabinet cover is directly flushed with the cabinet's face like what you can see there is no lip that you can put any crown molding on there that means that you're pretty much out of luck you'll have to go with this route if you choose to like for this another example where there is a gap at the top and there is no lip for a crown molding to fit in so in this case when you have this sort of situation you might have to go with my route where you cut a piece of board or piece of strip of baseboard or casing and you'll just have to go and fill that crack or that Gap from the ceiling to the cabinet drawer now you might come across another situation where you do fill that Gap but then the ceiling itself is not leveled with your cabinets at all so you're gonna it's still gonna end up with this uh little tiny space at the top where you put that filling so what do you do in this situation well you have a few options one option is you can use some sort of caulking the one that I prefer to use is a dab stretch the extreme stretch because it allows for expansion and contraction and it is very very reliable the other option is you can use baccarat they come in different sizes and then you can use any type of filler wood filler joint compound and then apply caulking after that sometimes people choose to have that Gap anyways even with even if they have crown molding at the top which is perfectly fine there is no wrong or right way you can put your crown moldings well there is a process but it's totally your style like for this case this one has a continuous crown molding that goes from the cabinet up to the wall itself this one again there is no wrong or right way to style your cabinets I mean you can go put that crown molding and stop from there or you can continue it all throughout the whole length of your wall like for example here's another example where they put the crown molding at the top and they just stopped right at the wall it's totally up to you that that indicator right there is where it stops before we start installing anything you want to do the proper preparation I'm just using my 10 and 1 tool to pair my scrape off any build up on top of that cabinet because I was doing a renovation I was trying to fill in those imperfections on my ceiling you're probably wondering why this piece of trim is two inch wide well you'll find that that in a bit why I'm using a wide trim like this which we you will probably need to help you fill out or do the proper fix later on so I'm just using a piece of tapping board you can use any block that you want so that you can tap and not directly tap onto the piece that you're installing to prevent any Nicks and dents I do come across this issue with my Mallet that I ended up scraping on top of my ceiling so be careful of that as well you're going to see some shifting so you might go back and forth tapping just testing out where it's gonna land and again there was two options my wife wanted a complete flush but if you're gonna go with the reveal option where you can have a little bit of lip showing you can go with that route but as you know the boss always wins um she's gonna go in what she wants what she gets so she's gonna go and get that flush but in this case I'm showing you this one with the little reveal let me know in the comment section down below which one you prefer I prefer actually this side but my wife wants a complete flush clean look so I'm gonna go and tap it a little further down so we could go and match up with the framing of the cabinets so you're probably wondering what I'm doing with this block well it's holding in the piece of trim while I go Brad nail it on the other side that's the reason why we leave a two inch excess so that we can have something to nail the cabinet to the extra trim that we're using everything is not squared so I'm using this different size trim piece to fill on the other side because it's not the same height on the left side so you might have to go play around with your different trims I'm using a different size on this one so that I can make it nice and flush to have that nice clean look and then I'm going to be using my go-to which is this dap extreme stretch I'll leave the link on the description down below if you need one of these and I'm just gonna fill in that Gap like what I mentioned earlier you can use different type of compounds you can use a backer rod this one is a very like a 1 8 inch that's the biggest Gap app that I saw there from the ceiling to the top of the trim and also between the trim and the cabinet there's also a gap so I'm using that to fill in so also while I'm doing this I just found out that I can actually remove the cabinet's face which makes your job a lot easier again if you're interested on how I installed these cabinets I'll leave the link on the description down below of that video of my complete kitchen renovation but this is how I filled in those gaps once you're done just put back the cabinets and just do the other side as well easy peasy bring with you a wet rag this will help you out in your caulking process when you go and get that excess off your fingers you don't have to use gloves but for me I choose to wear gloves anyways just be careful when you're touching that ceiling again here's the option number one where you can have that nice reveal my option you know what I choose anyways this is my preferred option but again wife wins she wants a flush look again if you find this video helpful friends please hit that big thumbs up press the Subscribe and notification Bell and I'll see you friends in the next DIY how-to video foreign [Music]
