an attitude and an atmosphere of transformation of change as your word comes forth tonight god that it would change us that it would move us and that it would draw us closer to you we pray this in the the parashat tonight come on up [Music] thank you for joining us as we read the parashat this evening joining our jewish brothers and sisters around the world uh we're going to start first in hebrew not in english and we'll be reading from deuteronomy chapter 4 verses 32-39 elohim and in english deuteronomy 4 32-39 for ask now as the days are past which were before you since the days that god created man on the earth and asked from one end of heaven to another whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of fire as you have heard and still live or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation by trials by signs by wonders and by war by a mighty hand in an outstretched arm and by great deeds of terror all of which the lord your god did for you in egypt before your eyes to you it was shown that you might know that the lord is god that there is no other beside him out of heaven he let your he let you hear his voice that he might discipline you and on earth he let you see his great fire and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire and because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of egypt with his own presence by his great power driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you to bring you in to give you their land for an inheritance as it is this day know therefore and lay it on your heart that the god the lord that the lord is god in heaven above and in earth beneath there is no other and now we'll go to the um uh isaiah chapter 40. [Music] and in english isaiah 40 verses 9-11 go on a high mountain o zion herald of good news lift up your voice with strength o jerusalem herald of good news lift it up fear not say to the cities of judah behold your god behold the lord comes with might and his arm rules for him behold his reward is with him and his recompense before him he will tend his flock like a shepherd he will gather the lambs in his arms he will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those that are with yang and for the brits the new covenant matthew 23 verses 34 through 39 um and in english therefore i send you the prophets in wise men and scribes some of whom you will kill and crucify and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town so that on you may come all the righteous bloodshed on earth from the blood of the righteous abel to the blood of zechariah the son of barakaya whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar truly i say to you all these things will come upon this generation o jerusalem jerusalem the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it how often would i have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you were not willing see your house is left to you desolate for i tell you you will not see me again until you say blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord powerful words um if you will i love to come and share the word of god and i love to be in the house of worship i also know that we get to be live here so worship you know has a certain feel when it's live and it really is have you turn in your bibles to the book of revelation chapter one and chapter two because that's where we're going to spend the majority of our time those are the two main portions of the text while looked at what does yeshua have in his hand and what does it mean both to yeshua and what does it mean to us what do we do about the symbolism of what yeshua holds in his hand we've covered if you want to find it in the archives perhaps you didn't get a chance to join us the last few weeks he holds the sword in his hand the iron scepter there's a yoke that we are working with yeshua for the betterment of his kingdom last week we covered the keys to death in hell that yeshua holds the keys to death and hell and we're going to recap this tonight is the final night of this series we'll be transitioning next week but tonight is the final night we're going to start with revelation chapter 1 verse 10. we want to look at the true faith of yeshua and what does yeshua hold in his hand symbolically what does it mean for us let me begin revelation chapter 1 verse 10 on the lord's day i was in the spirit and i heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet which said write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven congregations to ephesus smyrna pergamum diatera sardis philadelphia and laodicea i turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me and when i turned i saw seven golden lamp stands and among the lampstands was someone like the son of man dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet with a golden sash around his chest the hair on his head was white like wool as white as snow and his eyes were like blazing fire his feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters in his right hand he held seven stars there it is he held seven stars and coming out of his mouth was a sharp double-edged sword his face was like the sun shining in all of its brilliance now we we covered the sword a few weeks ago but tonight the stars the seven stars that were in his hand now that passage introduces us to what we also see here is the seven golden lamp stands and yeshua's walking through the lamp stands meaning they were quite large i get the impression and and i'm not saying this because i can back it up scripturally but i get the impression so i'm going to just move over for a second i get the impression that the lamp stands were large because not only is he walking through them but the lamp stand in the temple was quite large it was it was much larger than a human and it could be seen from all over the city of jerusalem when it was lit and i get the image of maybe that's what the lamp stands were like and there were seven of them because yeshua is walking through the lamp stands how do we know it's yeshua because it tells us it tells us the depiction of who he is blazing fire in his eyes white hair shining like the brilliance of the sun this is yeshua undoubtedly and he's walking among the seven lampstands which are quite large in my opinion and in his hand are seven stars now last week we we covered what was in his hand was the keys to death in hell and so we might ask the question what are the golden lamp stands what are these seven stars can we jump into the symbolism well look down in verse 20 same chapter revelation 1 verse 20 and we get the explanation exactly of what they are it says the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand of the seven golden lamp stands is this the seven stars are the angels of the seven congregations and the seven lamp stands are the seven congregations and so right there it becomes really clear what it is the lamp stands are the congregations that are mentioned and the stars are called angels here there are seven of them in the hand of god in his right hand there's seven of them and they're called angels in the texts now the the these stars they represent the the messengers to the congregations right and knowing that there are no actual chapter breaks in the bible when the when the original authors were writing they didn't have chapter breaks and so sometimes when you get to the end of a chapter you need to read the beginning of the next chapter to get the finished thought of the author and so here we have to do that we roll from verse 20 right into chapter 2 verse 1. it says to the angel of the congregation in ephesus write this these are the words of him who are who holds the seven stars in his right hand and who walks among the seven golden lamp stands and so again we see that the the angel is represented by the star now ephesus in this chapter ephesus would have been the lamp stand because they are the congregation they're one of the seven lampstands being mentioned so how does it work well yeshua is giving a message to john john is writing it down john is going to give this written down message to somebody called an angel or a messenger represented by a star and then that messenger that angel is going to give the message to the congregation or the lamp stand and so it's a process of delegated word john is going to be the one relaying these messages so let's jump into this who are the stars then we know the lamp stands are the congregations we know yeshua's talking to john john's writing it down and he's giving it to someone that someone is what i want to focus on for a moment the someone the seven stars in the greek angelos it's a messenger an envoy one who is sent by another one a messenger of god and and of course we get the english maybe the spanish word other languages from this we get angel but it doesn't necessarily mean it's not necessarily set up to where it can only mean a heavenly angel or a non-human figure if we were to compare and contrast that to the hebrew malach this is the hebrew word that we find in the tanakh for angel and what does it mean well it means to dispatch someone a deputy a messenger specifically someone getting a message from god maybe it's an angel but also could be a prophet a priest or a teacher an ambassador a king somebody like that and so what the first thing we want to do tonight is look at these seven stars they represent this angel this messenger from god try to figure out who they are because we know the lampstand is the congregation we know the message goes from yeshua to john who is this messenger angel i think it's safe to say that as we study the text here in a moment we're going to find that the that the angel messenger is most likely the leader of the congregation i think they're they're viewing that messenger as someone receiving a message of god for the congregation much like we try to do here but we want to look further into detail to flesh this out look in revelation chapter 2 again i'm going to read the first seven verses and then we're going to break it apart a little bit the angel of the congregation in ephesus right these are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lamp stands i know your deeds your hard work and your perseverance i know that you cannot tolerate wicked people that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not and have found them to be false you have persevered and have endured hardships for my name and have not grown weary yet i hold this against you you have forsaken the love you had at first consider how far you have fallen repent and do the things you did at first if you do not repent i will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place but you have this in your favor you hate the practices of the nicolasians which i also hate who whoever has ears let him hear what the spirit says to the congregations to the one who is victorious i will give the right to eat from the tree of life which is in the paradise of god notice something that first he's not addressing the congregation he's addressing the leader of the congregation he's addressing the angel the messenger the leader and you might say if it were an angel or if it were a non-human messenger would yeshua be addressing their deeds i have seen your deeds would he say that to an angel does it fit would yeshua be praising the hard work and the perseverance of an angel a non-human from heaven i don't know if that fits now he doesn't tolerate wickedness and that's a good thing but he is also said to have tested the claim of false apostles that sounds human to me how can an angel test a false apostle but a human could he has unfortunately forsaken his first love but he also has endured hardships he has not grown weary again to me that sounds quite human he's forsaken his first love that he had in the beginning with yeshua he's called to repentance he's called to return to his first love again that sounds to me human i don't know that i've ever heard beyond the fall of the first angels that god has ever called an angel still in his presence to repent and it leans toward humanity an angel a messenger a leader of the congregations this person is said to hate the practices of the nicolasians why would an angel hate that how would an angel even know and then in verse seven yeshua speaking through john he switches to speak clearly to the congregation whereas before it appears he's speaking to the star not the lamp stand the dichotomy the comparison works like this he says to john to the angel write this but whoever has ears to hear write this and so it broadens you can see it it sounds very specific in the beginning of the verse and then by the end of the section it's broadening out a little bit to the angel i write and to them who have ears let them hear it's singular versus plural i believe it's safe to say that there's a chance here that yeshua is speaking as a star hold it held in his hand he's speaking to the leaders of the congregation he's saying i'm addressing you leaders of the congregation before i address the community itself i want to address the leader of each of these kehilots of the congregations and then as he progresses he hones in on specifically speaking to the congregation which again is the lamp stand it would be hard to believe that the entire congregation has lost their first love but one person could have lost their first love right just like it's hard to believe that in all of ancient israel everyone for had forsaken the lord well no they hadn't there was a remnant that certainly did not they were called prophets and lovers of god so certainly not everyone in the congregation would have lost their first love now he could have been talking to the congregation as a whole certainly that is possible as well but it seems to indicate that if this leader doesn't repent doesn't turn doesn't change back to something he had been before that god was going to remove the lamp stand from its place and so it looks like it's possibly human it's it's the leader of the congregation and if this leader doesn't prove himself to be repentant pursuing god as his first love and being a good leader of the congregation it looks as if what's being written here is that the lord will remove the lampstand from him he will remove the authority to lead the congregation from this star from this messenger now ephesus is certainly not the only congregation that's mentioned here in the seven stars held in yeshua's hand remember there's seven of them and as the lord brings his word through john there are other leaders in other communities and you start to see patterns in the communication for instance if we were to drop down later into chapter 2 verse 18 there's a town called thyatira and it's interesting to see here how the message is separated look at verse 18. to the angel of the congregation of thyatira write this these are the words of the son of god whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze i know your deeds your love and your faith your service and your perseverance and that you are now doing more than you did at first nevertheless i have this against you you tolerate this woman jezebel who calls herself a prophet by her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and eating of food that has been sacrificed to idols now look at verse 24 he broadens it out to a bigger group now i say to the rest of you in thyatira to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned satan's so-called deep secrets i will not oppose any other burdens on you so again you have a singular versus a plural you have a directed uh message to what appears to be the leader or the messenger of the congregation and then later a broadened out message to to the larger congregation to the rest of you in thiatera he writes first addressing the angel the star later addressing the lamp stand and he does this all throughout the seven leaders the seven congregations the seven stars the seven lampstands throughout these chapters now i will admit to you that sometimes when you go through these readings it can be hard to discern if the lord is only speaking to a leader in one section and is he only speaking to the congregation in another section or is he maybe speaking to all of them at one time certainly it's not you know 100 clear so let's do this let's play it safe when we interpret the word of god what if we looked at these and we read them and we said let's apply everything that can be applied to us even if you're not sure you say pastor chad maybe that message only for you you're the leader of a congregation maybe it's only for you maybe you have to be careful not to lose your first love well i embrace that but i might also challenge us all let's be careful not to lose our first love and not just relegate that to okay other people in the congregation let's be you know like the leader is addressed here be quick to repent and get back to the things you did in the beginning okay i embrace that as a leader but what if we as a community also look at that and say hey when we do wrong we better repent and get back on track unless the lord might remove something under our care and so while we don't have to break it black and white we can certainly embrace all of the lessons being taught here with the seven stars and the seven lamp stands identifying them as leaders and congregations and that's a safe way to play it here having a humble heart before god we should be able to also understand why yeshua is holding the seven stars in his hand and not just any hand it says clearly he's holding them in his right hand so why would he be holding the stars we've now called them leaders in the communities why would he be holding the leaders in his right hand we need to address that tonight why is he holding them in his right hand why not his left hand well as we have been studying he's got other stuff in his right hand too right he's got the sword he's got the scepter he has the keys to death in hell by now it looks like his hand is getting pretty full so you might say well did it ever say that he had the keys in his right hand or left hand and maybe if he has the stars in his right hand maybe he has the keys in his left hand well certainly by now if we walk with the lord long enough we know that natural law doesn't always apply to him he can have lots of stuff in one hand and for the majority of the things that we've studied in this series the things in his right hand have denoted authority the authority of the word of god to come back and to crush a spirit of lawlessness to bring law back to our land the iron scepter to rule on his throne with an iron scepter to the nations who needed to be judged because of what they did to his people to walk in the yoke with yeshua with his delegated authority doing his will holding the keys to death in hell which we said last week was really the authority to open and close according to the greek the authority to open and close and again the stars the leaders in his right hand are those in authority but a key phrase that we should remember tonight the right hand is the place of authority that is why yeshua sits at the right hand of the father because he's the one that has authority remember as you go through the patterns of the bible you have to pick up these threads that that constantly reveal themself and when you see something on the right hand in the right hand to the right-hand side it's denoting authority the reason that we we get the true faith of yeshua sitting at the right hand of the father is because the father has put everything under his authority and so the right hand is important here because it's god's way of communicating i am delegating authority to the leaders of the congregation i've ordained it that way now you might say well i don't like that i want everybody in the congregation to be equal listen we're all equal in the kingdom of god we have distinctive value in the roles that we play a husband and wife are perfectly equal but they are distinct in how god has created them and what he's called them to do a child in your family is equal of value to you as a parent but god has called them for a season to be your child it's a different role and the leaders of the congregation are not better they're not more righteous certainly no one on this stage has ever claimed to be that but we do serve a distinctive role and that role sometimes comes with delegated authority from the lord himself and we have to take it very preciously very carefully this authority i want to give you a quote by an author last name eisenberg it says as other apocalyptic jewish books john's letter of revelation includes predictions of the future events that are meant to be a comfort in the time of discouragement and persecution especially at the time of the brutal persecution of the followers of yeshua by the roman government the true king of israel yeshua the son of man and the high priest of heavenly tabernacles he affirms that all those who trust in him can be confident in their future yeshua holds them in his right hand of strength and authority they have nothing to be afraid of because we know the one who's in charge and that's a message i want to get across to all of us today we find ourselves in times of discouragement uncertainties the unknown i've heard more times this month from leaders in our community pastors of many of our campuses that we are connected with just about every week congregants both in person and online the most common phrase being used right now around the world is i don't know what to do and maybe you're watching online tonight and you're saying i don't i don't know what to do my job is gone i don't know how i'm gonna pay my bills unemployment's not enough i'm not getting enough food for my family we're really facing some hard times i don't i don't know what to do this is an unprecedented season of life and we would say we we're with you we're praying for you we feel that it's hitting us here also here in israel our unemployment is i've never seen it higher almost 30 percent now here in israel is the unemployment and the most common phrase right now we're hearing is pastor i don't know what to do but here's the good news tonight we know someone who does know what to do he knows exactly what to do because all authority is given to him he holds the the authority in his right hand he holds the keys he holds the sword he holds the scepter he holds the stars the leaders the ones that are are meant to guide and give messages and and encourage and i hope that's what we do here tonight but remember you have nothing to be afraid of we see again the pattern of authority as yeshua holds all of these things as a matter of fact the book of matthew mark luke acts and hebrews all mention that yeshua sits at the right hand of the father and this again denotes his authority let me read this passage to you from ephesians chapter 1 verse 18 to really just hammer home why the right hand is so important and why it once again reveals this pattern of authority that yeshua wants to get across of the things he holds yeshua's hardware ephesians 1 18 i pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you the riches of his glorious inheritance and his holy people and his incomparable great power for us who believe and that power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised yeshua from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms far above all rule and authority power and dominion and every name that is invoked not only in this present age but also in the one to come and god placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the congregations which is his body the fullness of him who fulfills everything in every way did you catch that yeshua is your hope when you don't know what to do you know when yeshua was betrayed and sacrificed on the tree you know the disciples had a little pow wow and the most common phrase at that moment would have been i don't know what to do and instead of trying to figure out what to do they needed to look to the one who knows what to do and we're being encouraged we're being challenged today in the same way remember friends he holds it all in his hand he's not nervous he's not shaking he saw it already before it happened and so he knows the path forward and he's speaking through himself to john to write it down to the leaders of the congregation dispersing hope and encouragement to those who are part of the kehlah part of the community of faith god's right hand denotes authority everything is under yeshua's feet and remember lest you ever get nervous that the leaders of the congregation i'm talking about the pastors and the elders and the deacons the the the community group leaders those that lead prayer watches the worship team the leaders who have some level of delegated authority unless you ever get concerned that they have too much authority and you're nervous about it remember who holds them in his hand remember who is actually the head of the congregation it's yeshua himself all other things submit to him now at king of kings we want to be good leaders for you we spend immense amounts of times in his word in prayer together individually with our staff with our teams online even right now lots of prayer times online right now we want to be good leaders for you we're accountable to one another we're accountable to the broader leadership network of king of kings that we have a chance to be part of here we're accountable to the amuta board in israel we're accountable to our other boards around the world we're accountable to other pastors here in the land of israel we are as accountable as a ministry as i've ever seen [Music] and that's the way we wanted it because we believe that provides safety for the people and god has put in his scriptures over 100 verses mark this found it fascinating over 100 verses in the bible giving a warning to being a bad leader and i'm just going to give you one but different words are used god's leaders of god's people kings prophets shepherds officials overseers elders guides deacons etc 100 verses over 100 verses talking about be careful that you're not a bad leader so leaders have pressure on us we are doubly judged for what we teach and how we live and how we example and i can't read a hundred but i can read one of them this is our closing verse tonight jeremiah 23 verse 1 and 2. woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture declares the lord therefore this is what the lord the god of israel says to the shepherds who tend my people because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them i will bestow punishment on you for the evil you've done declares the lord so any of you that have thought hey i'd like to be a leader in the family of god that's a good thing to just to to move forward on get some training talk to those people who can mentor you and disciple you but remember with leadership comes a higher level of judgment and punishment with leadership comes a higher level of prerequisite it comes with higher levels of authority yes but it comes also with higher levels of accountability and if you don't want people in your life and you don't want to be a leader and i think that's really what god's getting after when he's talking to the stars in his hand in revelation he's saying guys if you're going to be in this place of authority if if you're going to receive my delegated authority be careful because you have to be repentant also you have to come back to your first love as leaders you can't lead people in areas you're not passionate for and no leader is ever above being corrected and that's the safety we want to hear from the book of revelation it's the safety we want to put into practice here in our congregation and throughout the whole king of kings network around the world we teach this stuff in our leadership training courses we teach this in our pastor and elders training also at the israel academy of ministry so it won't be the last time you hear us say it but i wanted you to hear a a very strong piece of our theology here at king of kings that we believe in accountability and apparently according to revelation so does god where's the application well as we get into the latter days of this age and as things become difficult let's listen to the loving warnings of yeshua okay maybe the maybe some of the warnings sounded like they were for the leader only and maybe some of the warnings sounded like they were from the congregation it's hard to decipher exactly which one and where you would draw the line but listen let's do this challenge together read it again embrace everything you can embrace and put it into practice let's embrace the call of god for leaders who will lead well who will lead in truth and i ask you would you please pray for us as leaders it's hard enough being a leader in a good time try leading through a pandemic and the expectations that people might have that you can solve all the world's problems you can't and finally to the congregation i would say this as you read revelation and as you see the lamp stands as you see the warnings it's always good to measure our progress as a community with the progress of the community you read in the bible use it as a measuring stick if they're being challenged in an area receive that challenge are we doing well in that area not because you're trying to compare who's better or worse but if god is highlighting something to a community it's good to try to embrace what he's highlighting to the community and realize that it's symbolic and it can apply to us as well we're going to close out the series but i encourage you to keep studying we only gave you five pieces of this puzzle different hardware of yeshua different things that he holds in his hand he holds a lot more things in his hand that we didn't have time to cover it's a great part of the material you can cover in your community groups this week and we do want to encourage you be part of our community groups online as much as you can until we can get back together let me close you in prayer with this blessing father we thank you that you have ordained the local congregation to be your outlet for teaching in the new covenant we thank you lord that you thought it wise to choose leaders and elders and teams that you thought it wise to build this process of accountability that you were loving enough to warn us when we were starting to steer the wrong direction whether it's as leaders or as a community we thank you that that's the environment in which you've put your anointing in the local congregation help us to do it well god would you help king of kings community jerusalem to do it well would you help us god we need your help there no one was born a professional at this we're all learning as we go father we also pray a special blessing over all of the slipped outside of god's control everything is under yeshua's control and even though we're living in unprecedented times it's not unprecedented to god in fact the body of yeshua has seen for thousands of years hundreds of years times like this where we're walking into things that we don't know and god you know the answer we might proclaim god we don't know what to do so tonight god we're asking for your direction we're asking for your authority over our lives we're asking for your spirit to go out in front of us we're asking god that you would make your body confident and bold and strong in these days even though we can't see steps in front of us that we would in faith take those steps trusting that you know the next the next step in the next plan and god we ask that you glorify your name through your body through us in all of our weakness as we trust in you as we lay our lives in your hands because you hold the keys you hold the stars you have the plan in your hands
