- 10 times out of 11, I'm the one racing. And he's the support. So I'm lucky that he's letting me be part of the support crew this weekend. And I'm excited to see
it from the other side. We got, all the things. just gotta lay it out and make sure we didn't forget anything. - It will close. It will close for sure. Sit on it. He's having his gear prepared
for at least two weeks now. He's been obsessing over
what things to bring. - I'm not fast. But, I am not here to win. I'm just here to see if, see if I can do it. And, all the gears just to improve the odds. - Let me out - Please. - Hello Courtney, there you are. We are race check-in, for the Bear! Exciting. Pre-race meeting time. - Hello? Can anybody hear me? Hello? Anybody out there? All right, now that I have your attention. Welcome to the 21st Annual Bear 100. This is a little more laid back. Yeah, I'm laid back. I finished the Bear seven times. I've attempted it eight times. It's never easy to run a 100 miles. (chuckling) Not for the top runners and not for the slower runners. A third of the runners won't make it. Just too tired. Maybe they'll pull a muscle. They've lost the will to go on. 6:00 a.m. there's going
to be about 300 runners that are gonna take off from Logan, Utah and their destination
is Fish Haven, Idaho. You never know when
things are gonna go wrong and you're gonna hit a bad patch. And they gonna want to quit, But you find a way to get through it if you want to bad enough. And you will find your way to the finish. - Heading to the honey bucket. - Oh, this one's called honey bucket too. - (laughing) it's all
very glamorous, yeah. So a friend of mine gave me a
really great advice last year, she said, "Start slow and then fade." And that's, I think a good
strategy to finish (chuckling). - [Commentator] Seven, six, five, four, - Hey you guys having fun? - [Commentator] Three, two, one. - Go! (crowd cheering) - Go runners! (Courtney screaming) (crowd cheering) Miss you! Make good choices! ♪ Now I ♪ ♪ Can not ♪ ♪ Go to sleep ♪ ♪ Buried in my chest ♪ - Practically there already. ♪ The only thing that's left ♪ - Yeah, it's far. Ultra running is a sport that involves running distances
greater than a marathon. That's how they get
classified as an ultra. So it can be a lot of things. 50 K, 50 mile, a 100 K, a 100 mile, like six hour, 12 hour, 24 hour. There's some a 100-milers
that are done on a flat track. And then there's mountainous a 100-milers that take a lot longer
no matter who you are. Yeah, a 100 miles is far enough where it's gonna be like quite a roller coaster, usually of things going as you plan them. And then things going not at all like you plan them. Yeah, it's a sport where people run for a really long time and you see what they can do. - We're 38 miles in, still going till tomorrow. But yeah I think midnight or so, its supposed to start raining again. Hopefully it's like it was earlier. Preferred not to have a daluge. Make for some fun mud. Safety first. Right now its: look good,
feel good, look good, safety. Safety fourth. (bell ringing) Our crew is my wife Courtney and my friends, Mike, Stan, and Melodie. We are the A team topped crew. Courtney and I through lots of races. All very good people. I haven't seen them in about
three and a half hours today. Four and a half hours. So they knows what they've been doing. (upbeat music) ♪ Ropom pom popoo ♪ ♪ Ropom pom popoo ♪ As Pacer, we have to be
ready to be at our very best. And so signature sauce, will definitely helped that. His crew should have a couple hours. - [Man] Yeah. - Which should be fun. Cheer for people. Put out the build camp chairs maybe. - [Man] Yeah, for sure. - So our ankle stopped swelling. - [Siri] In a quarter mile turn right - Thank you Siri. - Different races will let you, will let the crew come to aid stations throughout the race. And you can provide the
runner with food and water and change up their
gear and moral support. You can tell them jokes. There are a lot of
lessons to learn to do it. The first time I crewed her was when Run Rabbit Run back in 2012. And neither of us knew
it we were doing it. It was her first attempt at a 100 miles. It was my first time crewing. And like I had to have her
explain to me what it was and like what I was supposed to do. Because I didn't, I knew nothing. Yeah, it's just been a learning experience over the past seven years
and it's been really cool. Like now we both kind
of see each side of it and get to switch roles. And I think it's super cool. - I like running with Kevin and so that we get to share
these nine miles together is really special. (bell ringing) And maybe will see some stars. And. KEVVVIIINNN!!! - I mean, I'm certainly biased but she's one of the
toughest people I know. Yeah, she's never afraid to
try something because somebody, somebody else thinks
it's like a dumb idea. - These, smell so bad! My eyes are watering. - Every time she
accomplishes something like, like she's immediately looking
towards the next thing. What else can I do? How much further can I run? What other difficult crewing situations can I put Kevin through? - Yeah, I'm like Courtney
pull it together for this. You're the crew. Be smart. Think through everything. Have a plan. All these things that I
only do sometimes normally. Tell him I'll miss it. - [Man] Hopeful I can fit into it. - Have fun (laughing). - I ate too much. - Okay, you gotta potato. - Yap. - And, I have been nailing it all day. I think, we can ask Kevin. Jury's still out. I thought I screwed up. - [Man] Hey, thanks again. - Yeah, see you. - When It goes to the
nighttime its cooling off, it feels awesome. Getting your headlamp bubble. And I feel like miles
just seem to go by faster. It's just quiet and dark. - I'm having a difficult, difficulties. - Yeah (indistinct) Where is it? - It's in the bottom pouch on the right. What in the Sam Hill? - I'm like, yeah, let me
do this night section. Here's my headlamp. Pretty pumped about that set up. It's going to be really bright so I can be like really helpful. You got to put it on with the thing. - Oh yeah, so this goes here. Wait, I'm supposed to be helping you. Good job! - Thanks guys.
- Thanks. - Are the batteries there? - Oh shiiiii. - Are they not? - No. - (laughing) Courtney. - And then I forgot to put
batteries in it (laughing). But I have this flashlight which is good. Always be prepared for emergencies. And it's not bad. - One thing I need a
reminder on the next day. - Yeah. - To put glide in other places. - Yeah, you got it. Look good, feel good, look good, safety and batteries in your headlamp. - Okay, stick out of my legs. So many stars. (gentle music playing) - Don't worry about me. - Another hour or two like
this dry cool nighttime. But then around 3:00 a.m. it just started to rain like constantly. - [Man] You've got to cruise it. - Yeap.
- Good work. - Its rain time. Thanks Utah. - There were some miserable hours for him but quitting was never an option. And so as a crew person then I just kept, we all knew like keep him going. Get him out of the aid station. Send him on his way because
then he has to just forge ahead and meet us at the next one. - My feet are going to be so much worse. They hurt. The rain also turn the
course into a mud bath. Like internally it felt
like ridiculously fast. but I'm sure if I go back
and like watch the tape, it's just like this slow shuffle. But, there goes a miserable human. I'm sure the look in my face was, it was not nothing spectacular. (breathing loudly) It was just like fighting this, everything I've left. - It's cool to watch someone who's, who's hurting so bad and you
know what that feels like. And, you also know how hard
they've worked for this thing. Its like everyone's got
that last gear that, like you think you're totally spent and you think there's
nothing left to give. And you just need something
to light the spark for you to find the next gear. I think everyone's got that always. 27 hours and 25 minutes. 9.25 Kev, you can push through. - You have to concentrate not as usual. - Like no one in ultra running is doing it for any sort of glitzy finish
line or fame or fortune. So that was like the most
perfect resemblance of that. And then he just took
off and that was so cool. - [Man] Yeah! (people cheering) Get out of the rain dude, come on. - Come here. - [Man] Great job Kev, great job. Amazing finish. Two-five-O. - [Woman] Two-five-O. - [Man] Two-five-O. - [Man] Two-five-O. (background noise drowns
out other sounds). - (laughing) I don't know why I did it, but I ran a 100 miles. It's so easy to fall in love with like the ultra community and like
all the people out there. Met a bunch of cool people on the course, they are awesome volunteers. My friends and Courtney along with me and it was a super cool adventure. We do it to see like
what we can accomplish. Why not? Why not give it a try? (upbeat music) - You know how many headlamps
I'm bringing this time? - All of them. (buzzing loudly) - They are a lot of batteries(chuckling) - Why are they not working?
