is marked by the giving of ashes to show our sorrow for our sins in the face of god's infinite and faithful love all of us are encouraged to receive the sacrament of reconciliation to repent and be sorry for our sins it is in the spirit of contrition that we hope we enjoy the fruits of easter today we also enjoin the entire church to the call of pope francis to make this day of intense prayer and fasting this is our way of begging the merciful lord to grant a peaceful resolution to the present conflict in ukraine may the queen of peace preserve the world from the madness of war presiding in our mass today is his excellency archbishop charles john brown apostolic nuncho to the philippines joining him or his brother priests in this mass let us begin the celebration and sing our entrance returned to thee [Music] father returned to me [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen peace be with you and with your spirit let us pray grant o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with the weapons of self-restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen let us now listen to the word of god the first reading the first reading from the book of the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and the infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage a reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was steered to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord thanks be to god responsorial psalm be merciful o lord for we have sinned be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me be merciful o lord for we have sinned for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight be merciful o lord for we have sinned a clean heart create for me o god and a steadfast spirit bring you within me cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me be merciful o lord for we have sinned give me back the joy of your salvation and the willing spirit sustain in me o lord open my lips and my mouth shall proclaim your praise be merciful o lord for we have sinned reading from the second letter of paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ god as it were appealing through us we implore you in christ's name be reconciled to god for our sakes god made him who did not know sin to be sin so that in him we might become the very holiness of god as your fellow workers we beg you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i've heard you on a day of salvation i've helped you now is the acceptable time now is the day of salvation the word of the lord thanks be to god let us honor the holy gospel [Music] is is is my the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord jesus said to his disciples be on guard against performing religious acts for people to see otherwise expect no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms for example do not blow a horn before you in synagogues and streets like hypocrites looking for applause you can be sure of this much they are already repaid in giving alms you are not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing keep your deeds of mercy secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you are praying do not behave like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in synagogues or on street corners in order to be noticed i give you my word they are already repaid whenever you pray go to your room close your door and pray to your father in private then your father who sees what no man sees will repay you when you fast you are not to look glum as hypocrites do they change the appearance of their faces so that others may see they are fasting i assure you they are already repaid when you fast see to it that you groom your hair and wash your face in that way no one can see you that you are fasting but your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you sisters and brothers the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters in christ for me as your apostolic nuncio it is a deep joy to be celebrating the beginning of lent this ash wednesday mass here in the church of the jesus in your famous ateneo di manila university i'm very grateful to the invitation of the president of the university father roberto yap and also the rector of this beautiful church father bautista father kit bautista to be with you for this celebration i've come from the nunciature with my assistant monsignor alessio de ryu to begin lent my second lent here in the philippines with you the community of ateneo de manila university in all its different levels from grade school through high school to university and graduate school let's meditate a little bit on this holy season that begins today this season that we call lent in english quadrigasima in latin in quaresma in filipino in tagalog in italiano what do those words indicate all of those words indicate a number the number 40 they're all derivations of the number the word for the number 40 because lent is a period of 40 days of intense spiritual preparation interior preparation of our hearts for the glorious celebration of the passion death and resurrection of our lord jesus christ at easter time we make this preparation so that when we reach easter and especially the easter vigil we will go into church and celebrate that rich liturgy with hearts and minds prepared so that on that night on the vigil of easter we will breathe the atmosphere of heaven we will drink in the grace of god that he wants to give us at easter time so quadrigasima in latin in german it's called fastencite the period of fasting because that traditionally is what these 40 days were for christians 40 days of fasting we today in 2022 fast on two days ash wednesday and good friday but the traditional experience of lent was 40 days like today of fasting one meal and no meat for 40 days in preparation the english word lent is an interesting word we have the quarezima which is the word for forty we have the german fastenzite which comes from fastine then we have the english word lent what does that come from what does it mean lent is a derivation of the original old english word for the month of march march was called the lengthen monot the lengthening month was the name for march and lent our celebration for preparation of easter always falls in that month of march so in english it began to have the idea of the fasting for the month of march and since march was called the lincoln monarch the word for our fast in english became lent coming from that old english word for the month of march lengthening why lengthening because in england and also in the philippines in the northern hemisphere the days are lengthening during the month of march the days are getting longer there's more light there's more light and isn't an image that we can use for our souls during this time of lent of lengthening let's let god's light extend itself in our souls in our hearts let's expand and lengthen our capacity for god and for his grace during this experience of holy lent so those are the ideas that come from the word for lent and in our second reading from saint paul's letter to the corinthians his second letter to the corinthians he tells us saint paul brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ god appealing through us we implore you be reconciled to god and saint paul says now is the acceptable time now is the day of salvation for me as an ambassador of the holy father pope francis i repeat that call of of saint paul who was the ambassador of christ be reconciled with god during this experience of lent be reconciled with god because now is the improper time now is the day of salvation our liturgy begins very solemnly very silently today there's no penitential right that will be replaced with the imposition of ashes which will follow the homily but the liturgy in the ancient church begins with that prayer which you heard me pronounce at the beginning of mass grant us o lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils think about those words the church prays let us take up battle let us do battle against spiritual evils we may be armed we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint of mortification the weapons that we are taking up today lent is a is a period of spiritual militancy an interior spiritual militancy an interior battle of the heart the unseen warfare of our heart so that our hearts will grow and will be filled with god's grace but of course as i preach preach to you about taking up the spiritual battle of lent we cannot not think we cannot but think of the situation of conflict and violence that we find ourselves in on this day in march of 2022 and our minds go to rome to one week ago to our holy father pope francis in which he said and i quote i invite everyone to make march 2nd ash wednesday a day of prayer and fasting for peace in ukraine i would like to appeal to everyone the pope said believers and non-believers alike jesus pope francis reminded us one week ago taught us that the diabolical senselessness of violence is answered responded to with god's weapons as the pope said in italiano con le army di dio the arms of god god's weapons which are prayer and fasting he said i invite everyone to make next march 2nd ash wednesday a day of fasting for peace i encourage believers in a special way to dedicate themselves to prayer and fasting on that day which is today may the queen of peace preserve the world from the madness of war so these themes of militancy these themes of battle these themes of struggle are the themes that we begin with in our minds as lent takes its initiative in our hearts today think about it brothers and sisters in our catholic tradition how many of our saints were originally soldiers and of course here in the jesuit university the first one who comes to mind is saint ignatius of loyola he was a soldier who became a saint he was trained in the art of physical battle and then became a master in the art of spiritual battle the interior battle of our hearts but not just saint ignatius of loyola the founder of the company of jesus but also martin of tour that wonderful saint who divided his cloak with his sword so he could he could do charity to a poor man by the side of the road who is shivering in the cold saint martin of tour a roman soldier cuts his cloak and gives his cloak to a poor man on the side of the road charity a soldier saint joan of arc a female soldier a female leader also a saint of the catholic church and here in the philippines we can't forget blessed justo takayama a japanese samurai who died here in the philippines here in manila in 1615 a soldier who became a saint became blessed so this spirit of militancy is a spirit that we need to incorporate into our spiritual lives so we will really fight the good battle of faith during this period of lent and there were really three weapons the pope of course mentioned two prayer and fasting but there really are even the pope recognizes three weapons that we have during this period of lent and those three weapons are mentioned by pope francis in his letter his message for lent 2022 which i encourage you if you google pope francis message lent 2022 you'll find it quite easy easily on the internet and it's not very long to read and the pope in that message speaks to us about the importance of not growing tired of doing good taking that from the letter of saint paul to the galatians let's not grow tired of doing good because the worst thing that can happen to us spiritually is tiredness cynicism discouragement tiredness and the pope wants to encourage us to be vigorous and indeed in a spiritual sense to be militant in a holy sense in our spiritual lives and what are the three weapons that the pope mentions he says let's first of all not grow tired of praying jesus teaches us to pray always without growing weary in the gospel of saint luke so lent brothers and sisters in a is a time when we need to try to pray more try to pray more brothers and sisters now sometimes people say to me well the quantity of prayer is not important it's the quality there's some truth to that but the quality of our prayer is something we really can't completely control ourselves we pray we try to be attentive we do our best but the quality of our prayer can vary but what we can control is the quantity of our prayer how much we pray and if you pray a lot you will pray well so pray during this lent pray the rosary pray to our lady the queen of peace be close to her so first that arm that weapon which is prayer and secondly the pope said to us let's not grow tired of uprooting evil from our lives and he goes on to say may the corporal he means the bodily physical fasting to which lent calls us strengthen our spirit for the battle against sin so as we know all of these themes of militancy of interior warfare are a type of battle against sin selfishness egotism all the dark corners of our heart that need to be purified by god's grace and each and every one of us experiences that we need to fight during this lent to fight the interior battle because brothers and sisters when god's grace reigns in our hearts it begins to reign also in society god's grace doesn't reign in society apart from human hearts it's the conversion of your heart and my heart that changes society it's not really society that changes us but we that change society so let's remember the importance of prayer the importance of uprooting from our hearts anything that is evil the pope mentions in passing in that same paragraph of uprooting evil of spiritual fasting and he mentions physical fasting also but he says let's fast a little bit he said from the addiction to the digital media which the pope tells us can impoverish at times are human relationships lent is a propitious time to resist the temptation to be completely focused on social media and instead to cultivate as the pope says a more integral form of human communication made up of authentic encounters face to face and in person third battle third weapon the pope says let's not grow tired in doing good in active charity towards our neighbor this is the classic weapon of almsgiving of doing good to the poor during lent the pope says may we practice almsgiving by giving joyfully god loves a joyful cheerful giver god supplies seed to the sower and bread for food and enables each of us not only to have food to eat but also to be generous in doing good to others let us be generous during this time of lent to others find ways to serve the poor as the pope asks us lent he says is a favorable time to seek out not to avoid those who are really in need to reach out not to ignore those who need a sympathetic ear and a good word to visit not to abandon those who are lonely so those are the arms that we take up in this period the arm of prayer the arm of fasting the arm of charity of almsgiving and we do all of these things under the watchful eyes of our lady the mother of jesus the mother of god our mother who loves us who encourages us who keeps telling us always what she said at the wedding feast of cana do whatever he tells you do whatever jesus tells you what is jesus telling us to do today make a good lent brothers and sisters make a good lent be determined to bring this period of 40 days to beautiful fruition beautiful blossoming when we celebrate easter and let us pray as pope francis has asked us for peace in the world and most especially for peace in ukraine which is indeed a threatening situation that is definitely worrying and a source of concern for the holy father and for all of us throughout the world dear brothers and sisters for me as your nuncio is a joy to celebrate mass for the first time in this beautiful church of the jesus may god bless you and make a good lent and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes which we will put on our heads in penitence oh god who desire not the death of sinners but their conversion mercifully hear our prayers and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes which we intend to receive upon our heads that we who acknowledge that we are but ashes and shall return to dust may through a steadfast observance of lent gain pardon for sins and newness of life after the likeness of your risen son who lives and reigns forever and ever [Music] [Music] my lord [Music] foreign [Music] your passion finds the darkness of my souls [Music] who fall in love with is [Music] your love for me surpasses all my feet [Music] i beg to fall in love with every breath of life i take i beg to fall in love [Music] thee [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] my brothers and sisters we should pray at all times and we should pray more during this season of lent we should faithfully keep watch with christ and pray to our father our response will be lord have mercy lord have mercy let us pray for the church may all christians everywhere listen study and meditate on god's word during this holy season we pray lord have mercy let us pray for the world that in this time of the pandemic may people everywhere work for love and healing to make these days the acceptable time of god's forgiveness and salvation we pray lord have mercy let us pray for all who have sinned and grown cold to their faith may they turn again to god during this time of reconciliation we pray lord have mercy let us pray for all christians may we learn to examine ourselves our thoughts words habits and actions and feel sorrow for doing bad and not doing good we pray lord have mercy let us pray for all of us gathered here may we learn to repent turn away from sin with all our hearts and turn to god we pray lord lord have mercy let us pray for all athenians may we become truly people for others so that our land will not only be about us but about how we love and serve those in need we pray lord have mercy let us pray for the urgent concerns of our community and our personal intentions we pray lord have mercy we include in our intentions the birthday of bishop pablo david carol sepeda thor robert harn gracie diaz nori ahirsitu reyes and jovi miroy let us pray lord have mercy for the repose of the souls of tita yap and sylvestre herrera we pray lord have mercy for the special intentions of rene and johnny tonko on their wedding anniversary we pray lord have mercy lord may your people turn again to you and serve you with all their hearts with confidence we have asked for your help may we now know your mercy and love in our lives we ask this through christ our lord amen we shall now have the preparation of the altar and the offerings [Music] bodies one god [Music] me we are one body in this world servants are free [Music] no more [Music] one body [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is one [Music] one lord [Music] and we'll be this one [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of god's name for our good and the good of all god's holy church as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we entreat you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate devoutly the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through jesus christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven and the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim [Music] full of your glory [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name therefore o lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs saints ignatius of leola francis savior and peter faber and
