[Music] so [Music] um [Music] page 126 [Music] how lovely today is shabbat shalom [Music] oh [Music] [Music] i [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] they know they need [Music] and so my friends we welcome you back into our sanctuary here at tbi whether it be the sanctuary at elmer road or the sanctuary that we have created in our homes uh across melbourne uh across the state and indeed across the across this globe as we welcome you all into our our virtual services we welcome you whether you're joining us uh for the first time or whether you've been with us week in and week out since uh we moved into this uh into this modality i'm so glad that you've chosen uh to be with us uh this evening as we begin to celebrate shabbat there's this liminal time between the new year and the day of atonement i'll say a little bit more about uh shabbat shava later on in our service but in offering these words of welcome let's leave the shiva for a moment and focus rather on the on the shabbat as i offer a covenant on page 127 in our prayer book there are days when we see things for ourselves and and measure failure by what we do not gain on shabbat we seek not to acquire but to share these are days when we ex there are days when we exploit nature as if it were a horn of of plenty that can never be exhausted on shabbat we stand in in wonder before the mystery of creation there are days when we act as if we cared nothing for the rights of others and shabbat and shabbat we remember that justice is our duty and a better world is our goal we embrace shabbat day of rest day of wonder day of peace we welcome shabbat with the words of d on page 100 and 338. [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] um [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] m [Music] so from those beautiful songs of shabbat we now turn to uh to the ritual with which we welcome shabbat the kindling of these the shabbat lights and uh i have uh my candles here in front of me uh michelle has candles in front of him in the sanctuary and it's my my pleasure to welcome up on to our virtual boomer judy cohen is representing our board of governance uh this evening with her candles at home just as i invite each of you who have candles with you uh to kindle that flame and join us in enlightening them now as we light these candles we recognize that they give light to all who behold them so may we by our lives give light to all who bowled us as their brightness reminds us of the generations of israel who have kindled light before us so may we in our day be among those who kindle light and let's join together with michelle and offer the blessing as a community [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] shabbat shalom to those of you in the sanctuary shabbat shalom to you judy shabbat shalom to each and every one of you who are joining us from home may this shabbat shava 5782 be a shabbat of rest of peace of wholeness and of healing for us all we continue now with psalm 92 a song for this shabbat day on page 140. be our shelter from life storms eternal one help us to walk with good companions to live with hope in our hearts eternity in our thoughts that we may lie down in peace and rise up waiting to do your will has [Music] foreign [Music] this shelter of peace is spread over us over all your people israel and over jerusalem page 162 the words of the shambhala beneath a covenant for all time this is shabbat [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] we turn forward now towards the prayers of the amidah as our focus turns in the sanctuary to the to the rona kodesh as you can see through the service our melodies recognize that this is shabbat the scrolls are donned in white the curtain is white uh alhazzanim are wearing uh the kettles the clothes of the season and our liturgy two changes and so i ask you to to follow along closely as we put in the editions uh for these young men for these high holidays we are on page 164 and we continue as we have throughout this pandemic to pray as if everything depends on god but to act as if everything depends on us [Music] what a nice [Music] foreign [Music] hello [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] more [Music] is [Music] there's [Music] um [Music] there [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] m [Music] [Laughter] [Music] oh man [Music] we pause for a few moments of silent personal prayer uh [Music] is [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] thee [Music] praise to you eternal one blesses your people israel and indeed all humanity with peace peace of mind peace of spirit and peace of heart my friends as many of you know i am i have a number of of jewish obsessions most of them are object-based although some of them are indeed text-based uh i like to collect uh yards the uh the pointers that are used to uh to read from the scroll even though uh i failed three times uh torreira laning class at medical school and uh both the uh councillor loom and and ronda hall have have uh in their in their in their time given me more uh over the years giving me more time than you could imagine in helping me to try and refine that skill but yet it avails me but uh nonetheless i love these beautiful these beautiful pieces of judaica i also happen to collect tully tot i have an embarrassing number of talithot each for a different moment each telling a different story it show reminding me of a a different memory each bringing me uh bringing me great joy you know if i uh if i turn over to the side i can see behind me uh uh talit from my uh for my installation a senior rabbi at tbi and then below that there is a talit my son's talent gifted to him just a few weeks ago for his bar mitzvah and this is a gift from my for my wife at uh uh each reminding me of different remarkable moments in my life each connecting me to to community to faith into history but perhaps of all the objects i like most in in my jewish collection it is uh it is the shopify which holds the pride of place in my heart though far because it is such a an honest an honest object it's not complex it's not uh difficult to to make it is is natural in its form it is uh surplus to the animal who grew its needs once uh once that animal has has died or has been has been slaughtered and we as a people have have used this the surplus object in so many ways for so many purposes throughout our history we have as i spoke about on rosh hashanah used it as a as an alarm cry to herald imminent danger we have used it over the ages uh particularly the levites uh to call people to prayer from the corners of of temple mount we've heard it to remind us of that still small voice in in the heavens calling out to each of us deep with within our hearts and of course we use it most commonly uh through these 40 days through the month of elul and beyond uh rosh hashanah towards yom kippur as it serves as our spiritual alarm clock as the the rambam teachers to calling us to to wake up sleepyheads and uh to consider and and changing our ways i'm often asked by young and the younger young heart where i got my various shopharot farm and then why i choose to sound one on some occasions and and others on on other occasions i have to be honest it has very little to do with the sound all for that matter the the size some of my shafa rocha far grander than than others i have for example this uh this beautiful ibex shofar it sounds a little like a foghorn i will turn away and turn back to give you a sense my father tells me this is the sound he remembers from childhood growing up in cape town the horns that were sounded as the boats came in uh amidst fog it's a beautiful shofar it comes from animal uh indigenous to the state and land of israel but it's not a shofar i like to blow this this time of year there are other shafarot in my collection including this um this kudus offer from south africa my birthplace it too has a beautiful sound resonant as if it's calling to to me calling to us it is uh the shofar that people who are more instrumental than me can can do extraordinary things with it's beautiful but it's too not a surefire that i choose to sound this this time of year instead the shofar that captures my eye and captures my heart and indeed captures my ear this season is perhaps the most uh simple in my collection the simple rams horn it's an imperfect shofar it has a chip on the end i'm not sure if you can see that an accident from years gone by but nonetheless i still love it because it tells me the story of this season not just the story of the akidat it suck the binding of isaac that story we read on first day rosh hashanah but the story of what we as individuals and as a community are engaged to do what this shabbat is about it tells me the story of return i love this shofar and sounds it on on rosh hashanah and through the yamim norim almost exclusively because of its shape it is its shape not its sound that is the metaphor of the season because when i turn it this way you'll note that the head of the shofar is facing in the same direction as the mouth the shofar has physically turned back to its original point it has returned and that's what this season challenges us to do not to go forward or sideways not to go to some place that is beyond our reach or or beyond our understanding but simply to turn and go back and go back to where we've been before to a comfortable to a safe place a welcoming and embracing place as i have said and i will continue to say through the yamim narayan the high holidays is not about changing the world rather it's about changing ourselves and we make that change by returning not to some new place but back to ourselves to the most very familiar place we could imagine our very best selves that is what shabbat the shabbat of return is about our opportunity to conclude that process before we stand before the holy one on yom kippur i invite you to join me now as we formally sound the shofar year all of its cries all of its sounds and listen to its challenge for us to not go somewhere new but rather simply return to our very best selves [Music] [Music] uh tequila [Music] ah a good year a year in which we are all in the collectively and communally inscribed for good by simply returning to our best selves my friends we turn our focus back towards the iran as we turn forward to page 586 and ready ourselves offer the words of kaddish yatum [Music] me [Music] that was of course the elena not kadisha tom but our thoughts do now turn to uh to those words and that prayer which can be found on page 598. as some of you have noted i uh amongst the white clothing are don for the season i'm also wearing a crea ribbon a ribbon which uh notes that uh my life my family like three others in our congregation have had our lives torn apart ripped apart uh by the loss of a loved one and we sit within a house of of mourning the kriya ribbon or the act of kriyara is a is a powerful symbol in our tradition it tells us that at moments of of loss pain is is acute our life has literally been been ripped apart but it also there stands there to remind us that like any piece of fabric that has been torn apart our lives have and will be mended they will heal they will come together but like any piece of mended fabric there will be a scene a reminder of that loss as well as a reminder of that life and and all that it represented we remember those that have come before us those who we have loved and who we have lost and those who brought so much color and life to our lives we think of renee crane harry render and lily and terry who have all been laid to rest in the days since rosh hashanah we think also of those who shim we are still remembering as a community louise abrams glenda bernstein roman gando cantor abraham jacoby zeller kaminsky stanley klinger lynn levine ron liner octa brina ashman leon strauss and alan michael wolf and on this shabbat shava this first shabbat of 5782 we also remember the life and legacy of amelia aarons joe bentata bena best gertrude bach esther chachron jacqueline goldsmith fritz hurling leslie honig magda juggerpovic claire jonas ludwig jonas baron labransky ann lee les levy ron lowe pinchas meisner ann maron marla fefer philip opus james rich jaisal rothfield harold sackville hunker salsman baruch david simon dolphy spitz jeffrey starr lothesteen greta tobias richard valentine and abraham wexler together with these names we also think of the millions who have lost their lives at the hand of this pandemic that continues to keep us apart as well as on this shabbat the 20th anniversary of the horrific events of of 9 11 the 11th of september 20 years ago we think of all of those who in that incident and in the days weeks months and years that have followed lost their lives to act of terror and hate we think of all of them as we offer the words of kaddish may the one who causes peace to reign in the heavens above bring peace to all of us to all who mourn for particularly being peace and blessing to those who have lost and who we loved and to that we say i'm in well welcome back on to our virtual vice president judy cohen
