"Just Go With The Flow" - A Toxic Mindset for Christians (Pastor Steve Smothermon)

critical thinking is about testing all things ideas thoughts what's being said we do this by comparing what we hear with the written word of god that's why if you don't believe this whole book you don't believe any of the book i mean well i believe some no you don't no not really because at one point you'll not believe the part you say you believe now because you think it's it's up for negotiation and debate this is the word of god and this is the only way we can compare what's being said what is being said does it line up with the word if it doesn't line up with the word don't believe it last week i started talking about thinking that we need to learn to think and at the time we are born again we are given what the bible calls the mind of christ and i walk through what that meant it means really to think to to process to to be able to exercise reasonable judgment but second corinthian or first corinthians chapter 2 verses 13 through 16 the bible reads when we tell you these things we do not use words that come from human wisdom instead we speak words given to us by the spirit using the spirit's words to explain spiritual truths but people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from god's spirit in other words folks the bible's written to believers not to non-believers that's why when you have someone that doesn't believe and said i've read the bible and da da da da you just ignore them because this these words aren't written to them and because they're not spiritual you say well how do i become spiritual you got to be born again you got to be born of the spirit and then these words can begin to make sense to you or you begin to take heed to them and so he says the apostle paul but but people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from god's spirit it all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it for only those who are spiritual can understand what the spirit means that means you and i if we're born again if you're online born again then you can understand this stuff when you say you can't you can if you ask first of all before you come in here before you heard the message you should have said holy spirit teach me today because the holy spirit's our teacher we go to prepare we we we tend to prepare for every place we go sometimes for church man we just show up we don't think we don't pray about it and i don't know about you but man i'm always asking the holy spirit to teach me you say why do you ask because he's the teacher he said why do you have to ask he should just do it yeah the bible says you have not because you asked not also. and so you got to ask you got to pray you got to believe if you exercise your faith so so what the spirit means those who are spiritual can evaluate all things but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others for who can know the lord's thoughts who knows enough to teach him but we understand these things for we have the mind of christ which basically breaking down means this word mind is nusos nuos and it just means to think if i had broken down to the simplest thing that we're called to think but like anything else we must develop our mind this mind of christ you're given to the mind of christ when you're born again at when you're born again the holy spirit comes in and the holy spirit and you receive the mind of christ but you have to develop it we must all learn to think critically because this message is about learning to critically think see this idea to go along to get along is not a healthy one especially for the believer you know why doesn't a legacy church just keep their mouth shut and do what they're supposed to do and listen to the wicked person in the north why don't they just listen to her because i don't believe anything she says and then i don't believe the state has the right to tell the church anything and we will fight for that i'll fight for that right you say why don't you believe that because of the first amendment of the constitution so so what i'm saying is guys is that this this thought to go along to get along which is a big banner if you would a mantra of a lot of christians well i don't want to cause any issues i don't want causing wages folks listen just the fact that you're a born-again believer should be causing ways wherever you go i don't know why we thought it doesn't the world hates us the the world the world doesn't like the church because we we believe in absolute truths and the world wants no absolute truths and so this idea to go along to get along it's not a healthy one for a believer because that means you'll just submit to anything just go along with them hey let's go do this okay even though you know in your heart and mind maybe i shouldn't be doing that see god gave us a mind so we could choose so we could think first thessalonians 5 21-22 says but test that word also means examine or think everything that is said think about everything that is said test everything that said examine everything that is said hold on to what is good stay away from every kind of evil the word test again means to examine or to think think about you know when people teach things i think about what they have to say now a good thing is we're able to get some great people that that the great preachers in our country today to come and so they teach just sound doctrine and and you know but in years past i would listen to people talk and i'd be like there's something about that this doesn't hit me right and and and so so you know then i'd i'd go and evaluate it i'd go examine it and test it study it out start thinking about what are they saying and so you and i have to test and examine everything adolf hitler once again said what good fortune for governments that people do not think maybe the devil's saying the same thing isn't it great could you hear the devil isn't it great for evil and darkness to prevail because people do not think or test or examine anything they just go along and the church is a funny place it's a unique place but it's a funny place too you know i've never been a christian that gets caught up in fads never i remember you know years ago there was the laughing movement how many anybody remember that there was a whole movement where just laughing and i remember i was in tulsa as a ups guy and people kept inviting me to go listen to this guy and i said i'm not going to do it they said well i said because something hitting me wrong it just doesn't hit me right how we could have people you know guy preaching and someone just stand up in the middle of the church and go ha and somehow that's okay and then everybody else goes [Laughter] and then also and then they just start laughing i was in roswell when all this was going on some of it and i remember some guy come in and tried to tell me that i was wrong you know here i'm 33 34 years old here comes this older guy you're just wrong and you know at 34 35 you know you don't think much you just think well who are you to tell me i'm wrong you know i was a little bit different than i am today and and i and i remember looking at him and said so so let's just walk this through let's just think about this i said if you're in your service and you have a baby that starts crying in the middle of service what do you do he goes oh we go up to him and try to usher them out and get the baby to quiet down or take the mother and the baby to a room so they can quiet the baby i said oh but if you have someone stand up and laugh that's okay but a baby crying who the bible calls a blessing from god is not okay and i thought to myself that doesn't make any sense if baby crying is not okay why is someone standing up and interrupting a whole service to laugh and you know what happened was one day somebody laughed maybe because the spirit of god really they needed to laugh very hard good like a medicine so then someone said we should do that every service that's how the body of christ works someone jumped a pew one day or jumped a chair because they were excited god did something for him and then the next thing you know the next service there was more people jumping pews because they thought it was cool and then everybody started jumping pubes and when you go back and ask them why they said i don't know i saw this guy do this and when you go back to the guy he said man god supernaturally healed me i just got excited like a guy named jim spillman most you've never heard of him but i have because i've seen him back when i first got saved at bible school and he blew on he he didn't blow on people but he he talked about blowing on an individual and then if you watch people like benny han and them they blow on everybody i hope they use breath mints i don't know but but i don't even think he knows where that came from but jim spielman explained that he was in a prison and this big huge black gentleman he said he was massive walked up to him and jim was this little white guy and this guy walked up to him because the people think i don't know what was happening in the service and said god can't even knock me down god's not real he can't knock me down and so jim spielman's freaking out a little intimidated and he was just standing there looking at him and he said the spirit of god spoke to me and said blow on this guy and he goes what the first time i've ever heard about this and so he says blow on him so jim spielman thought okay and he goes and the guy went fell over bam hard and got up and got born again and said oh my gosh god's real so so that was a real something god did for an individual the next thing you know you got everybody blown on people and they're falling over it's like and i'm thinking man so i think through that and say my gosh god you really did a miracle here but then someone took it because it became a fad folks don't be the fad type of christian like the grace movement that was going around with i think his name joseph prince he was talking about a new revelation and basically taught grace in a way because i listened to some of it that guys like me were just holding you down and legalistic because we expect you to serve and give and and and live right and he was teaching a crazy way and i kept telling people don't worry about it it won't last long because there's no new reviews in the world there's nothing new under the sun and you go i got this new revelation be careful when people talk about new revelation and if they say it's new to me that's one thing but if it's brand new it's not of god you say how could you say that because the bible says nothing new under the sun and so i told people don't worry about it it'll be a fad it'll just fade away and sure enough you don't hear much about it anymore because when it's not of god it doesn't last and what christians sometimes do we just want to jump on the next train that we think god's there can i tell you something god's here too can i let me just bring that god's with you wherever you go and so so we have to think and if you don't think you just get caught up in stuff critical thinking is about testing all things ideas thoughts what's being said we do this by comparing what we hear with the written word of god that's why if you don't believe this whole book you don't believe any of the book i mean this is well i believe some only way we can compare what's being said what is being said does it line up with the word if it doesn't line up with the word don't believe it acts 17 11-12 and the people of berea were more open-minded than those in thessalonica and they listened eagerly to paul's message they searched the scriptures what did they search day after day to see if paul and silas were teaching the truth as a result many jews believed as did many of the prominent greek women and men folks i say it all the time you take what i teach and go study it out for yourself you'll find out god will give you better thoughts than he gave me find out if it's doctrinally correct find out if the bible actually says that you might get more out of it because you'll never know the whole word of god when people say i know the whole bible know you that's a lie you'll never know the whole bible we don't have the ability to know it all and no matter how much you know there's always more see always compare what you hear with what the bible says no matter where you hear it from or at tv social media always compare to the word of god so when you have a thought or you think you have a dream or you think god is speaking to you if it doesn't line up with the word it's not god it may have been the pizza the night before or the you know the tortillas and the green chili enchiladas that can cause a lot of stuff to happen the papas and the frioli it could be any of that but if it doesn't line up with the word so i don't know how many thoughts i've had over the years and i'm like that's not of god because it doesn't line up with the scriptures that's either my own self wanting something or it's just it's just you know the enemy's trying to get me off you know get me get me off of the council of god and so no matter what you hear who you hear from even if an angel appeared to you tonight you got to compare what they say to the word of god and if it doesn't line up with the word of god then folks it's not of god that's how mormonism started and that's how islam started a visitation of some creature for the mormons i think it was angel moroni but it wasn't of god without the word of god folks we are just utterly lost and i believe god is exhorting us to use the mind of christ and to develop critical thinking see critical thinking it is a way of thinking in which you don't simply accept all arguments and conclusions you are exposed to but rather have an attitude involving questioning such arguments and conclusions it helps us decide right and wrong good and evil paul's exhortation to the thessalonians includes very practical applications of critical thinking number one every idea should be subjected to critical analysis or testing where you test it from by the word of god critical thinking helps distinguish between good and evil it helps us identify those ideas that are biblical and good and those that are contrary what is taught in other words contrary to what's taught in the scriptures that's evil critical thinking is of utmost importance when deciding how to live our lives how we're going to raise our children and if you listen to the world the way we're raising our children is the reason the children are so rebellious today because we didn't train them we thought we were raising them and the bible tells us to train them train them what in the way that they should go what way the word of god so when people say even christians i don't want to force my kids to go to church because they'll hate god no they'll hate god anyway because they've never been exposed and understood the truth so we get them little and we train them and you say but man i was in the church my whole life yeah but did you live the church did you live the word in your home life because here's what i found out about people that kids that have been raised in the church when they come back they said man what what we saw in church and what we saw at home was two different things training has to do with us using self-control at home as well so if mommy and daddy are so sweet i mean sad when kids come and the mom and dad comes get them and they're all so sweet and they say i'm not going with those people and they said why because i don't know who they are is it your mom and dad they say they are but they're way too nice and by the way when kids go into children's church when they ask for prayer they they tell it all because they don't know not to they just say would you pray for my mommy and daddy because they really want their mommy and daddy to do well or my mom or my dad or whatever but training is training that means when my kids are small they went to church when they were teenagers they went to church what if they didn't want to go that wasn't an option i mean i i i just think when you asked any of my children it wasn't enough it wasn't like it's up for negotiate dad we're not going to church today oh no you go to church or you move you think i'm kidding if you ask my three children they'll say oh no he's serious you get up and go to church or you can go find another place to live because in this house we go to church on sunday not because daddy's the preacher but because we've always gone to church and you say that's so mean really i mean why am i going to let them live the way they want to in my house then go get their own house and at one point my youngest daughter did i said okay fair enough that's what i've said forever see we don't like those things because part of training is you obey what i say but if you're not living it folks it's hard to tell your kids how to live if you're living something contrary don't do as i do do as i say that's not going to happen they'll do what you do so we've got to learn to critically think and thessalonians says we are to hold fast to what is good and we are abstain from every form of evil critical thinking is challenging what is being said or taught woolsey said it like this he said but then after testing the instruction is hold on to the good the word is a strong one meaning latch on to it hold it fast don't let go like hang on this requires openness to truth and a readiness to incorporate it in our thinking and living appropriating valid insights and living by them after testing that it says stay away from every kind of evil we test in other words we think through a situation hold on to that which is good latch onto it and stay away from evil that's what that's what he's paul is teaching us in thessalonians we've got to think through it but yet we're in our society we're not taught to think like we should romans 12 2 says it like this don't copy the behavior and customs of this world but let god transform you into a new person by changing the way you think what that's why i titled this thing for a change then you will learn not until then then you will learn to know god's will for you which is good and pleasing and perfect see if you're not thinking you can't change and the reason some of you stay in the same place you're in today for the last whatever years and you never seem to get out of it because you're unwilling to change your thinking and when you don't change your thinking you can't change your actions and if you don't change your actions you're just going to keep doing the same thing over and over again and you're going to ask yourself how do i always end up in this place because now i have to think different thoughts and then different and do different actions i mean that that's why the bible wants us to understand we have the mind of christ god gives us that ability if we'll exercise it and develop it to think now i want to say this critical thinking should never be confused with being argumentative or being critical of other people that's not what we're talking about we're just talking about thinking through things why is this the way it is how come we're doing it this way even with god god show me what it is you're trying to teach me here and the whole thing about walking with christ is learning to change your thinking constantly so you change your thinking from the world perspective or an ungodly perspective to god's perspective and just because your family's been doing something forever doesn't make it right we can't change our thinking if we don't think that's a heavy review right there and think critically again it's not being argumentative i'm not talking about fighting i'm just telling my questioning albert einstein said it this way the world as we have created it is a process of our thinking it cannot be changed without changing our thinking let me say it again the world as we have created it in other words as we've created it it is a process of our thinking in other words wherever you're at is a process of your thinking it cannot be changed without change we're changing our thinking so we have to change our thinking to change our life people say i just want a different life change the way you think because when you change the way you think it'll change the the people you hang out with the people you associate with you'll just have to leave them alone because when you change your thing you're like i'm not going to do that anymore whatever that is i'm going to do something different five percent of the people think thomas edison said this five percent of the people think 10 of the people think they think and the other 85 percent would rather die than think christopher hitchens said this the essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks but in how it thinks if you make people think they're thinking they'll love you but if you really make them think they'll hate you a third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority a second-rate mind is only happy when it's thinking with the minority a first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking hey milne helen keller said it this way people don't like to think if one thinks one must reach conclusions and conclusions are not always pleasant i love these quotes see the very opposite is what's happening in our society especially today with public schools and universities we are being conditioned and taught what to think and what we need to be taught is how to think so that's what's happening in our public schools our universities we're being told what to think and if you don't think like they think then you're ostracized you're silenced you're canceled you're made fun of and we need to learn how to think how do i take something just walk through it and think through it because so many things make no sense when you start thinking through it even like the abortion thing and listen if you've had an abortion in here man we have we have groups to help you heal if you need healing but does it make sense that they've changed the narrative and said it's a woman's right to choose i mean they use nice terms abortion so a woman has a right to decipher her own body and it's all about killing a human being folks in my mind that just doesn't make any sense well who are you you're a man to tell a woman what to do i'm not trying to tell you what to do i'm just trying to save the person in you and i think to myself how did we get to that argument and you even hear so-called christians using that argument and then they say well you got to have abortion because what about incest and rape and all those things and you realize that's less than one percent of one percent of all abortions so that's a that's a few times that's a funeral that argument doesn't make any sense either but yet there's people maybe in this room are watching that believe abortion is okay and i grieve because the blood of those children if you believe in it things okay it will be on you i don't want that on me at all i'm not sacrificing any kid just because of my convenience and people say well you know they'll grow up in bad homes how do you know that i mean i was told there's a million people on a waiting list to adopt babies why don't we change the adoption rules so some of these good families can get kids so we're being told what to think you listen to most reporters today they they they write their story and then they report on their own story and so many of us listen to the news and that's that's what's shaping our thinking we're not even questioning it listen i don't listen to cnn msnbc abc cbs i don't listen to any of those liberal places and i barely listen to fox news you know why because i question everything they're saying today in fact i told somebody that i won't watch them probably hardly at all ever because i'm not going to allow them they don't shape my thinking god shapes my thinking and and so many people we fight over things that don't matter people leave the church over things that really don't matter it's just this is who i am and i'm like well great be that but if we don't learn to think we'll never change our life our belief we'll never change anything now i'm not great with computers so i want to give you this example and i close think of the human mind as a computer and the holy spirit is sort of an anti-virus program that can be uploaded to the human hard drive once the program is uploaded that mind can then affect all the computer systems taking out harmful applications and replacing them with good functional applications this is what being transformed by the renewing of your mind is changing the way you think see the mind of christ rewrites our hard drives so that we are capable of understanding or interfacing with god himself we gain new desires and qualities if we upload god's word and and and this anti-virus in our thinking we we gain new desires and qualities like humility and compassion and being teachable and obedience and the ability to critically think see we see we see clearly the reality before us that this world is temporal and flawed and that god's ways are the best ways just think if there was a download of a computer chip or a program and what god is trying to do is reprogram our thinking to his way of thinking because he said my thoughts are higher than your thoughts my ways are higher than your ways don't we want the best thoughts in the highest ways that's what he's trying to do and he's trying to download this into your thinking why so you can change your thinking why do i got to change my things so you can change your ways and so you'll know what's good and what's evil so many things we call good today are evil i mean the bible says woe to them he wasn't just talking to the unbeliever woe to you as a believer a christian call good evil and evil good man be careful i can get into so many areas right now and really get into some of y'all's worlds but i won't when we're christians and believers and our kids are living with somebody else in our homes and we're calling that good think about it my son or daughters came to me and said hey dad i got a boyfriend we're gonna come live in your house we have no place to live i'm like not together you're not and and and and when i say these guys you say well you don't know i i have kids too they wouldn't even ask because they know the answer would be no we don't have any place to sleep i don't care i mean i do care but that's your business who am i to interfere with how god's dealing with your life but we make it so easy for our kids to never repent i don't even know why i'm saying this i didn't say this last night so i guarantee there's someone watching or someone in here you need to you need to change the way you think because you're not helping your children you're hurting them you're giving them permission to do things in your house that you wouldn't even do in your own house and you're doing it out of this thought well i love them sure you love them but do we think we love our children more than god loves them i mean the bible is very clear in corinthians where paul rebukes the church because they allowed a guy to stay in there that was having sex with his stepmom he even said it's not even known that's not even talked about or done in the world and you guys are allowing it so you need to go to this guy and say repent and if he doesn't repent you need to remove him and treat him like an unbeliever have nothing to do with them until he repents but that's not the way we live because we're smarter than god well i don't want to be on cold well maybe if they got cold they'd say hey mom my girlfriend went home and i'm coming home and say okay but you're not both coming to my home doing things that the bible calls sin think about it i know people don't like when i talk like this because who do you think you're i'm nobody i'm just saying i'm nobody but that's what the bible teaches i mean if you were to talk to my kids they'd say he's exactly like he is talking i told my house my rules you don't want to by my rules i said i'll help you move well why would you say that don't you love him i love him with all my heart and i love them enough to say you listen i'm not going to condone or allow you just to live in sin so you stay away from god i'm i'm believing god's going to deal with your heart so you can repent well how can they repent if i make it so easy for them to live the way they want because the wages of sin is death but we're we're so our culture today so interferes with so much god wants to do out of this one word love and and it's not god's definition of love it's the world's definition of love we're using man i'm meddling now i'ma stop okay [Music] so as i close we must challenge what we are being told too many believe again the media and social media without question well i read it so it must be true i mean my phone comes up news feeds all day long and i read so many of them and i'm not that smart but i'm smart enough to realize they're all slanted against someone that believes the way we believe every one of them and then i read this stuff and they they the caption's so clear like da da da da da i read it and i'm like oh my gosh they're making up their story there's no facts it's just this is what we think this is what we believe and i'm like well i don't believe that and so i i read it with that critical thinking mind like wait a minute what kind of organization is this and you find out it's anti-god anti-america and then so they're going to attack people who are pro-america just like the protests in the streets and they're burning the american flag that has nothing to do with any lives matters black lives matters or anything else it has to do with i hate america because because it's just like why would you burn a flag if you're protesting racism and i don't know about you but my dad died for that flag and and it's like are you serious i watched it the other day people burn in the flag and approach i'm like why what does that have to do with what you're saying anyway just a thought here's what's tough though when you get around people who critically think it can make you somebody who doesn't very uncomfortable so that's what happens in new mexico we stand up we fight and we just push back and say no and because we're thinking through it i mean i thought about this who makes up these rules i mean who sits around and says you can't have funerals i mean what is it about funerals i mean what what conclusion should somebody come up with and say okay the thing we need to shut down is funerals i mean the person's already gone but i'm thinking why funerals this is how i think why funerals governor why funerals i mean what what is so evil about them i mean that's where people grieve and and get closure see i said when you don't think you get conditioned this whole thing is about being socially conditioned conditioning so here it is if we do this then i'll do this and then we get there they say oh no it's not good enough i'll do this when you do that. and folks that's socially conditioning eight months later almost nine you notice they quit using the term the new normal haven't you do you know why because people push back on that and said i don't want a new normal i just want to go back to normal so they quit using those words because it was causing pushback and i don't know about you but they're not going to socially condition me to do anything and and and they and they shouldn't be able to do it to you either i don't bind all this stuff i just read about it and think oh my gosh they have no answers here's the rea they have no answers they don't know what's happening i mean it's just going crazy all the things they've tried didn't work now they're going to double down on things that don't work that's why i just say man we got to think through it and if you think to it you won't be so afraid fear is a motivator but it's a horrible motivator let's stand and let's search the scriptures and find out the mind of god and develop the mind of christ that he's given us so we can learn to critically think father in jesus name i thank you for being here i thank you for teaching us i thank you for helping us god i said a lot of things i just threw him out there a father that somebody might stop and consider he says i was just encouraging people to just think think through it think through the process but i'm not asking anybody take my words because my words don't mean a thing but i am believing that people and more of us would we would take your word more seriously to find out what you actually say and believe that god above everything else and you would teach us to think you would teach us to critically think you would help us develop the mind of christ that you gave us when we got right with you got born again and we would start thinking through things with your mind your thoughts that are higher than our thoughts your ways that are higher than our ways teach us god just to think think through things in jesus name if you're here with every head bowed and everybody online just a moment of reverence wherever you're at you say pastor would you pray with me i've walked with god but i've walked away you're right and i just i just kept thinking through this whole thing why'd i walk away well someone in the church was mean or someone said something or i heard something i didn't like and and then you start thinking through it so why does that affect me so what does that have to do with my relationship with god and so now it's time to come home or maybe you're here online and you say pastor i've i'm not right with god period i i prayed a prayer because i was told if i prayed that prayer i'd go to heaven but i'm still living like the world my mind has not been changed at all but i want it to be changed i want to understand the scriptures well in order to understand the scriptures you must be what the bible calls born again you're born of naturally and you're born of the spirit where the holy spirit comes and indwells you gives you this mind of christ so you can understand the scriptures and you'll have a desire for the scriptures so if that's you in the powerful name of jesus whether you're online or in here with every head bowed just for one moment and you say preacher including your prayer what i'm going to ask you to do is not difficult but it is a step to say god i don't care what anybody else thinks i want you in my life if that's you in jesus name right where you're seated right where you're at online if that's you in jesus holy name right now without any hesitation would you just lift your hand up say preacher include god bless you god bless you god bless you god bless you god bless you all the folks up here god bless you god bless you god bless you over here god bless you up there anybody else god bless you god evolution than it does to believe there's a creator it takes more faith to believe there's not a god than it does to believe there is a god anybody else say okay i'm going to give god my heart i don't
