welcome back to caravana garbage where this week and next week we're going to be covering the two films very different from the judge dredd franchise why who knows no i know why oh carl urban is in dread yeah nice nice and by the time we talk about that the boys would have wrapped up and it's no longer kind of in the search algorithm but try to glom onto that trend as it's dying because it's fading away just just some of those seo scraps globbing onto a dying trend is absolutely in our wheelhouse so i love it all right let's do it let's let's watch dread agreed next week this week oh i'm gonna watch judge dread i forgot boo so leave a like if you could 1995's judged red starring sylvester stallone i've written some notes here in terms of i think it's close to being something but it's not because if you look at the allen silvestri score who's done a lot of the marvel stuff yeah a lot of the aesthetics are really good he's got the flying bike the costume's not bad it's got comic books at the start that's right comic books at the start the director danny cannon then went on to make one of your favorite films geostorm did he really yeah i hate that filmmaker that's your perfect film that's what that's what you're leading up to here what i'm saying is though that i think this is a distinct effort to recreate a comic book world that a lot of movies at the time didn't really bother to do properly they're like yeah we got some of it whatever shut up it's steel all right shut up that's right yeah you know he's a guy in a black costume of course he's green land you get it can they do that just whatever that's fine yeah i understand it so the early versions of this floating around arnold was considered for the role at one point okay was he considered for the role at one point or is this another of his fun pranks where he tricked sylvester stallone into doing a movie like stop on my mom will shoot it may very well be i don't know but i feel like you could have swapped him out and this movie is mostly the same right i don't know does arnold have the chin for this that's all you need the top of his head and the bottom of his head is a chin whatever way you're flipping so he could have been in some sort of horrible onset accident that turned his head all the way around and he could still have been judged yeah it's like one of those optical illusions where you flip it upside down you're like god's still a face like it's still a face so i don't think the casting of stallone is bad i just think the influence that he had on this movie because he wanted to be more of an action comedy resulted in it not being a very good movie and not a comedy either how did that go so bad i'm not a comedy i think there's one good joke in this well i mean that that being said judge dredd is intended to be funny yeah but it's called satirical and over-the-top violence and whatever and it's like government you know right yes the government but much worse maybe maybe not that much bloody worse these days that's what i'm saying these days every 2000 a.d strip is just judge red opens his door and he goes out into the streets and he's like well nothing to change here and then we all just laugh and laugh james i think stallone was looking for his total recall even though he's sort of a weird sense to say well i just think because if you look at like a few years prior he'd already attempted a total recall with demolition man and this has a lot of similarities you know he's targeted for a crime they didn't commit there's also a showdown in a cryo chamber at the end of sorts do you think maybe sylvester stallone in real life has gotten away with a crime he did commit and this is some sort of subtle tell he wants to be arrested okay cryostasis like how john wayne made all those war films even though apparently he was a draft dodger and he was making up for the rest of his life exactly that's right do you think though the helmet taking off that's like the core of what's wrong with this movie no actually in re-watching it i don't think that is the core of the movie's problems because traditionally and the reason this movie upset a lot of uh judge dredd fans threatened 2018 the the the british comic magazine from from whence he was birthed yes is that judge dredd in the comics never takes his helmet off there's like funny little strips where he'll be in the bath defending himself from like home invaders but he still has the helmet on kind of thing gotcha and so people were mad that very early on in this movie stallone takes his helmet off this movie fails in a re-watch because it's a movie about dread being framed for a crime he doesn't commit but we don't care because he's a fundamentally unlikable character like like straight away in this movie he arrests rob schneider's character for hacking into a a service droid in order to escape being murdered yeah like judge dredd doesn't care that this guy committed this minor thing just so he wouldn't die yes he's like the laws of the law and i'm sending you back to jail for this and it's like well i don't care you're off the streets then dread i don't care that you didn't commit this one particular crime because you you think you're infallible there's no extenuating circumstance that is too big to put some mercy on anyone you're just like i'll i'll imprison and shoot anybody i want because the law is the law i don't care you're going to jail dread how do you think that though differs from the comic and the better movie is it because with that guy he's always right like even though like he's got a hard line yeah but he's right and he's fair yeah and again like the the comic book version is a parody yeah and a satire yeah but not bloody these days tomorrow well you can step out the door you're like i'm not changing nothing here but like there's no this would be a good plot maybe for the second movie in the franchise right when you establish that he is uh a harsh but fair lord man and then the law is turned around on him yeah there's no i feel no sympathy for this character because he's a just a a rotten mean man is what he is so throw him in jail he's like i didn't break the law i'm law but you're like well that is the law and according to the law you broke the law so you'd better shut up and go to jail dread like what do you want yeah just shut your mouth and cop your punishment that's a really good point right at least to james yes they put in his famous catchphrase i knew you'd say that you know i can't i can't read an issue of 2018d or the judge dread magazine yeah him saying his famous catchphrase i knew you'd say that i'm just kidding i hate it yeah well because he doesn't actually predict what anybody else says he just says i knew you'd say that so you think he didn't knew they were going to say that he just says i think he's just guessing so do you think james rhema should have said actually there's a fair chance you didn't know i was going to say that yes if they had that interaction did they he was originally hicks and aliens oh my god i'm padding for time what you think of an answer i'm putting some trivia in the middle like you you are good thank you you are the ultimate comp here ah yes i think he should have said that okay fantastic how about this though do you think the public would have reacted better if he hadn't taken the mask off or was that the era of movie stars where people would have gone why did you hire salone if you didn't take his mask off i think it was do you think it would have gone that way anyway because that that would have been very unusual at the time to do you know by the time kyle urban did it you know they'd done it in fifa vendetta the mandalorian the 90s version exactly definitely exist look it up if you didn't if you could you could find it look harder but uh look to this film's credit you see all of the 90 million dollars on screen the models they built that one street it seems that they're kind of running exactly well they just got like one of the streets out of of gotham from one of the timber and batman movies it feels like that doesn't it just put more robot cars yep and then just put a courthouse at the end of it you're covered aren't you but you know like the the mutants that they create one in particular by the way that's that's social from the walking dead we know but you know that's an incredible work of animatronics and practical effects well i was going to say this is also one of those movies i think where they've gone we should make a judge dread movie let's look into the history of judge dredd and find some colorful characters and some maybe some some other 2000 ad characters and just shove them all in this movie yeah where i think it would have served them way better to have put those in different movies assume this was going to be a franchise and puts the character i think you're thinking of who is main machine angel who is sort of the cyborg whose aggression is determined by what number the dial on his head is set at that character isn't in the comic books until uh the judge child storyline in which the the judge is going to the cursed earth to find the judge child names and they're like i find him yeah they find him yeah that's great that's right and uh they and they meet the this mutant angel gang who are like really interesting personalities and uh you know very fearsome characters but in this we know they're very fearsome characters because judge red says the fearsome angel gang well time to shoot you all and then they're done they're one and done so you feel like this is one of those situations where they just go just everything just all of the comic things all the characters just get one of those old war machine robots and chuck it little bit of respect his name is hammerstein he's from the abc warriors james there is nothing judge joe doesn't say oh my god it's hammerstein from the abc world he doesn't because they're from a different universe well he should have said that as well that's right this is unusual because these are from a different universe out of continuity so the comedy you mentioned it uh the one line that i think works is the eat recycled food eat recycled food recycled food it's like it's the future and people are just eating [ __ ] i guess yeah yeah yeah like that's but good see they say i think good for the environment okay for you yeah that's good that's a good joke but the the comedic foil in this is one rob schneider that's right uh early on and turkey as fergie earlier that's right early on in his career uh though he was on snl around this time as well uh stallone called joe pesci first who turned it down who i mean that's much better isn't it obviously i didn't mind schneider's performance in this i did a pretty good job i think you're clouded by present day rob schneider who i know you hate look it's not that i hate him it's just that i don't like anything he's ever done or his personality huh not even the you can do it guy no i don't like it do you speak a little european jiggly i haven't seen it but no juice bigelow male gigolo that's a classic movie because the eiffel tower is penis no that's the second one but that's that sounds like someone has seen european jiggling i've seen the poster look i don't hate him i've just never thought he was funny and he's not funny in this i think he's remarkably restrained what do you want gilbert gottfried in this role yes mason i obviously i i yes i mean it was around the time of aladdin yes now that i've said it what a great idea there's i watched a bunch of behind the scenes stuff he said uh fergie's the every guy he's scared he'd sell his own mother to survive is that the every guy is it is that the every man push your mother down a flight of stairs to avoid something let's uh take a quick straw poll in the room show of hands who here would throw their mother down a flight of stairs ooh interesting i'll leave i'll leave a comment i'll pit it to the top except what people think the costume right it was a big deal at the time because versace created some other great gianni versace yeah but i mean what did he actually do i mean he just took a picture of the costume from the comic books and he was and he went to his minions and he went do this but real and cod piece and cod piece and also big boots so uh stallone looks a bit like a deer this he's too long and last yeah so big boots big boots well he's not he's not a very tall man he fix it in camera yeah fix it in no i have him strolling across the street in full view with his big boots on she's clipped clopping around he's got these big spindly legs yeah no it doesn't work does it but look it's it's okay like it looks accurate doesn't it i mean yeah it's really like but you're going with just a spandex underneath are you i guess you could criticize the next one because that's like a leather jacket helmet like it's pretty like a low-key yeah but this is like it's it's good the costume's pretty accurate yep the gun is obviously inaccurate but they've covered their tracks by saying it's the law giver two not they'll give a one what happened to the lord given one retired did it i guess it retired i mean it had one day till retirement and then you know it filled in the wrong form for bullets and so dread sent it to jail and i can understand so with the character of fergie though yes i don't know if you noticed this but well first of all let me take it back a bit in the book fergie dies he doesn't leave he gets crushed by whatever happens to him in the movie where he gets injured does he get i mean the novelization are you talking about the novelization but if you notice in this he seems to be written back into the ending because as stallone is coming down the stairs fergie's pulled out on a stretcher and he's like i'm okay too and like everybody ignores him like literally nobody talks to him and he's not in a shot with anybody else so i think it's a pick up that they put in the last minute they go well we can't have not fergie not beloved gary you have unravelled the mystery of judge dread the movie james i think i have it a big way yeah uh so diane lane's in this as well yeah she's good she's got a lot of scenes where she's like you you're really nice do some hacking yeah yeah and dread be nice and he's like oh no no i don't kiss women and i'm not nice oh that's see i think that's a pick up also it's at the end of the movie diane lane's like you've saved the day dread and now kisses and he's like i don't know i only kissed the law you know i've only got one wife it's the law and it's like don't try it now yeah there was no chemistry before this yeah it's like the end of demolition man where they're just like let's kiss but i feel like there was more i know he tries to have sex with earlier in demolition bed doesn't he that's right that's not the case here he's just like i'm the lord my brother's allah who was a lawyer but i put him in jail speaking of armando he's amazing i mean i know it's bad yes and i mean he's amazing at chewing scenery there's the you betrayed the law head snap walk away that's a great line but a line that i didn't remember was the one where he goes you want a new beginning i'm in the beginning it's really good i'm like wow this guy is just he's like a dog he's just like barking out dialogue this guy's insane i'm into it are they brothers or twins do they have the exact dna what's going on in the future i think just oh yeah dred gets framed because his brother did it do we that's fine you have to get it i need to know what i liked about their trial is that the initial prosecution's initial evidence was well obviously dread did it because they have similar looking chins it's obviously dread behind when they're like well this footage was doctored then they go to the dna yes crazy you don't open with that why are they even having trials why isn't another judge to shoot him right is that is that not how this society works another judge one who's always had it in for dread should have just shown up and be like well some people think you're guilty so and dread would have been like well fair's fair two in the back of the head absolutely yeah you're right and uh i look i think in this movie they're both clones yes but in the comic book i think that's common knowledge right okay they're all clones so i don't know why this was a big revelation yeah i don't know they don't i mean they kind of established the rules of the universe but then why i mean i guess he's a judge so he gets a trial that's how it works right yep i mean you just bloody look outside and you'll see some bloody injustice like that mate they should have just shot him i'm with you so in the comics right yes you'd be able to shed better light on this because you're more of a dread head than me i can try yeah cool so when uh max von's uh side house character retires he goes well when all judges retire they have to walk into the desert but my understanding is that's optional like you don't have to do that like the like the long walk yeah that's great i think it is optional yeah yeah cool so what what did it's that's like that eskimo like break off the piece of ah [ __ ] yo what i mean it's like that's what we're doing really you just have to walk into the desert can you just go i'm not can i just throw myself off a building can i not walk into an radiated wasteland when i'm 90 years old what you could do is you could just walk into like uh like into the street and be like i'm doing a crime and then a bunch of other judges would swoop in and machine gun you so you don't even have to do a crime yeah just say you're doing a crime they're like well he said he said so if people do want to watch though like a really cool short film about a retired judge it's minty check it out it's it's more dread style than judge dread but it is about a judge who opts to walk into the desert in retirement as opposed to you just have to because you're old and too bad so there's a bunch of stuff going on with the rating in this movie like that was shot as a pg-13 but they couldn't get it down properly from an r rating so they're chopping and changing bits in it so that's why it's it feels tame there's no real edge to it at all at one point you see guys arms get torn off i guess yeah yeah but you don't really see that and at one point uh one of the rookies gets shot and you see like his his innards on like the back of a wall oh yeah a little bit that's a little bit a little bit blood and guts or a little bit of ripe isn't it mason that's right now i've got trivia because this is our segment it's called i've got trivia but do you have anything to say maybe your own trivia before i do i got trivia this is called i've got trivia yeah so it's up to you to provide the trivia as you do every week that's a very good point uh so this is the first movie ever apparently i don't know congratulations danny cannon no wonder you got geostorm after this this is the first movie to release simultaneously with a video game oh i played that video game should we play it now do you have it are you okay all right the dark judges yeah how many of them are there four i think why are they called dark judges is it from a dark dimension that's not in the movie nope cool got it great uh the colon brothers turned down this to make fargo wow i would have loved judge dredd but fargo cohen brothers maybe they can bring maybe they can come back yeah maybe i can direct an episode of mega city one that series that is definitely coming out that'd be sick they get that dude with the ball cut to be judged red in their version whatever his name is javier bardem yes yes it was apparently going to be made in the 80s with harrison ford has got the chin for it mason let's see he's up for chin approval chin peruvial what do you think i can see it in the 80s sure he's definitely got it mason don't even worry about it uh and then i've got my rob schneider dies in the book but i think he died originally because his last scene doesn't seem to be i i mentioned that earlier sure did i should have put that was my that was my like killer ending i'm [ __ ] dead we're gonna have to think of an even bigger closer that's the biggest closer you could get so they were thinking of a sequel obviously they didn't make it because uh it didn't do super well did okay people hated it and it was the era when everybody kind of started to hate stallone quite a bit you know and everything that he did it was before his 2008 rocky revival you know what i mean i went over 2006 whatever that was you know what i mean this is not real downwards trajectory i think it's nearly something i think it's like if you change like the story uh-huh sure the story i'm talking about the world like the world building is is pretty interesting i like it i think it's a pretty uh comprehensive take on mega city one i think i think with more money put into it more well i mean it's 90 million that's quite a lot of money even more money maybe they should do reshoots justice league style just get go back feel more of it make it happen but no it's not it's not very good is it that's that's quite quite bad yeah so look come back next week because we're going to talk about the other dread movie which also didn't do very well but is much better but i still have some criticisms but it's more budget related than anything else well that's the thing i kind of yeah look we'll get into the next one i love it don't get me wrong i love it and i'm looking forward to talking about it because of course we do do caravan of
