Jordan Peele's Us Filming Locations...and Secret Easter Eggs REVEALED 4K

for today's groom adventure we find ourselves in santa cruz visiting the santa cruz beach and boardwalk not because of lost boys we were already here we already did that but for a movie known as us that's right jordan peels us it's a great movie and guess what jessica is in costume this is gonna be fun it's a beautiful movie creepy but beautiful now before we get this adventure started let it be known that we're only visiting the santa cruz filming locations that jordan peels us there's a couple other places near hollywood near los angeles where you film like pasadena and san bernardino but today it's all about this beach town that the lost boys was filmed at too today we're doing us i like this baby goal it's like some sort of twisted horror movie postcard for santa cruz beach and boardwalk i think it's perfect [Music] ah [Music] if for some reason jordan peele ends up watching this i do apologize but you my friend are a major nerd a major horror movie nerd and us is one of those movies that really showcases how much of a nerd jordan peele really is now santa cruz the beach the boardwalk if you're a fan of horror they filmed the lost boys here in fact this building right here this houses the carousel from the beginning of the movie the lost boys they even filmed a scene right here the bike rack because it is the offseason they're doing maintenance to the rides and the boardwalk itself so we can't ride the carousel but we can get up close and personal with the window you see it this is it the same exact carousel from the lost boys because jordan peele is a bit of a horror nerd and trust me it's not a bad thing he has filled us with a whole bunch of easter eggs to some of his favorite horror movies now we're going to talk about a few of them but probably the biggest one santa cruz beach boardwalk i mean come on they filmed the lost boys here now the lost boys came out in 1987 and the flashback scenes and jordan appeals us happened in 1986. now there's a scene in the movie where the mother says look they're filming a movie over here something like that you know you know they're filming something by the carousel you should see if they're looking for extras and the movie that she's referring to is the lost boys i mean come on if that doesn't make you love this movie i don't know what does it's a great movie it's phenomenal and it's so beautifully done we're watching it again last night to make sure that was fresh in our minds and i was like wow this is a damn good movie tonight's storm is causing all kinds of problems around the bay beginning we'll have the forecast and we'll show you what would happen to the day if some scientist predictions come true all on 7 at 11 what has 12 million eyes 192 million teeth and stretches from the golden gate bridge all the way to the twin towers it's hands across america a 4 000 mile long chain of good samaritan standing hand in hand that's right this summer six million people will tether themselves together to fight hunger in the united states the first shots we see of jordan peels us is of a commercial for hands across america 1986 and then it goes right into a commercial for santa cruz beach boardwalk which is where the movie begins summer of 1986 in santa cruz now it's right here at this building obviously it's off season so everything's closed but this is where adelie's father wins her the michael jackson thriller t-shirt and she wears it and her mom says hopefully it doesn't give her [Music] nightmares put some heat on that one yeah i guess i missed my chance to go pro that shirt better not give her nightmares in trouble for winning my daughter a t-shirt it was very easy to find this spot down here by the giant dipper mainly because of these lights right here you can see those in the background put some heat on that one yeah i guess i missed my chance to go pro as they walk away from the game adeline is wearing the thriller t-shirt and she's holding the candy apple and as she walks towards pretty much right where i'm standing you can see this yellow door right behind her that shirt better not give her nightmares after winning the thriller t-shirt in the boardwalk carnival game she follows her parents right down this walkway now on the left hand side you can see hot dog on a stick in the background and on the right hand side you can see the swings now of course it was nighttime everything was all lit up but to give you an idea the kind of movies that were filmed here this little walkway is also where in the lost boys you hear that famous line the one that i love where it's like what's your name and she goes star and then hot dog on a stick that can be seen in killer clowns from outer space in trouble for winning my daughter a t-shirt that's a new one the camera turns around once again and this time you can see that sign that says bazooka in the background she was terrified and it came on to me i don't know about you guys but there's just something extra creepy about boardwalk rides or carnival rides closed down for the season kind of reminds me of carnival of souls if you haven't seen that movie you should here at the santa cruz beach boardwalk the ride is called rock and roll but every fair every amusement park has something very similar i grew up knowing this as the music express now it's not michael jackson's thriller but how cool is it coincidence i don't know that right where little adeline was walking wearing the thriller shirt there's a mural here of michael jackson still walking the boardwalk they head over to this little stand which is where the game whack-a-mole is at now you kind of get this impression that her dad is a little tipsy he's been carrying a drink and he's kind of acting a little funny but it's right in here where he stops because he wants to play whack-a-mole and her mom says hey i need to go to the bathroom can you watch them and she's he's like yeah i got her and she walks over this way to where it says beat shack hey how about the big dipper whack-a-mole yeah whack-a-mole guys that's what i'm talking about again because it's off-season they have the metal doors down on the booths so you really can't see through them but if we walk to the other side see where it says hot dog on a stick look just to the right of the word stick where it says fresh ice cold lemonade that and then the slant of the roof you can see that in the movie behind the carnival barker as her dad is sitting there playing whack-a-mole hey addy come to the bathroom i don't have to go russell russell can you watch your daughter please i'm watching adelie turns and walks into the night leaving her dad right here playing whack-a-mole and you can see all the light bulbs all that up it's kind of kind of beautiful to be honest you see that exit sign about the middle of your screen in the movie there was an exit sign there slightly different but just to the left of that is a trash can where as adelie walks down towards the beach she passes the homeless guy with the cardboard sign saying jeremiah 11 11. now we know that this is the little corridor because if we look over this way you're going to see some lockers but just on the other side of the lockers there's this neon green it's almost like an upside down w or a triangle but it's the only place here on the boardwalk that looks like this and you can see it behind her as she walks down towards the beach now what's really cool about this there's no steps here oh yeah one more thing you can see the yellow post the wooden posts of the exit line from the swings in the background as well i've been to santa cruz beach boardwalk a couple times now and to be honest i thought that the stairs that they used were actual stairs like they were part of it they looked like they would be part of it but right there is where the stairs would have been it looks like they built it for the movie it is pitch black down here on the beach as she walks out until it's like almost like into nothing and the camera it makes it look like she's walking this way and you can tell this because of the lights off in the background just right where the sand meets the sky that's the pier but you can also see one of the blue lifeguard towers out there in the sand now if you look down the beach just beyond jessica you can see a couple of the different blue lifeguard towers they're pushed back against the boardwalk because it is off season but they're still here just because walking around in the sand and her bare feet it's the warmth from the sun yeah we're talking about you she walks down the beach the same direction that jessica is doing we know this because you see the roller coaster that's behind jessica in the movie there's a shot with her walking towards the water and you can see the roller coaster behind her a certain angle and it's a little further down it's about from this angle right here now looking at it everything looks still the same for the most part but you see that blue building it says deep fried on it that blue building was actually yellow at the time that they filmed the movie santa cruz beach boardwalk does have a haunted house a bit of a a dark ride but it does not have a mirror maze well when jordan peele made us they actually built a mirror maze down here on the beach right behind the rock and roll music express ride which is that red building in the center of your screen the mirror maze was called vision quest and there was a sign that said find yourself right above the entrance now above it and behind it you can see the roller coaster and the swings man i wish it was still here pretty much everybody who comes to santa cruz beach boardwalk wishes that this mirror maze was here i mean come on they should do it right how cool would that be arriving at the lake house they decide to go to the beach they are after all on vacation so the family gets in the car and they end up driving right down this road to santa cruz beach and boardwalk now in doing so they notice that right over here there's an ambulance and somebody's being loaded into the ambulance it's the homeless guy that's been holding the sign up that says jeremiah 11 11. she saw it whenever she was a little girl she sees it again now now what's really neat what he can line everything up you can see that sign for the handicap says reserved for persons with disability but you see this side of the house right here with that chimney you can see that in the background as well as down here at the far end of the street it says santa cruz beach this is the exact spot oh my god don't look is he dead don't look [Music] in fact if we look at the houses across the street you see that white picket fence you can see that in the background as they show the family in the car watching what's happening jeremiah 11 11 is another little easter egg that jordan peele put in this movie it's a bible verse you can go ahead and look it up but it's also interesting that it is a a number that mirrors itself 11 11 which can be seen throughout the movie as well as the guy the homeless guy holding up the sign something she saw when she was a little girl and trust me you'll see it throughout the movie little easter eggs little tiny things you got to look for we come back to santa cruz beach boardwalk this time present day and it's during the sunlight now the family is coming to meet friends here down on the beach it's their vacation getaway and as they walk across the beach you can see that that tower on the other side in the background where they're sitting on the beach you can actually see this building behind them in the distance now what's really cool about this that's the haunted castle the the haunted house the dark ride here at santa cruz beach boardwalk and if you look very carefully up there towards the top of that cone you see the giant spider you can't see that unless you're down here on the beach you got the boat yep i got the boat good for you dude boom that's fucking awesome would you get a dinghy oh shut up i'm trying really hard not to butcher names but if you've seen the movie us then you know that every character plays a double of themselves which means they have two different names and it can get a little tongue tied with that being said the adult adelaide her conversation with elizabeth moss that's the actress's name takes place in front of this building and this portion of the roller coaster you can see this in the background now what's really cool about this you see that portion of the building right there there's actually something here on the boardwalk that is a little nod to the movie us here let me show you of course us isn't the first movie or the last movie to be filmed here at santa cruz beach boardwalk but i love that they have it on display here filmed at the boardwalk us 2019 right next to that bumblebee 2018. and here's one that we all absolutely love the lost boys 1987. last time we were here we did the filming locations on that that was a like a three-day adventure and then over here sudden impact 1983 starring clint eastwood dirty harry is at it again just a small sample of the movies filmed here now somewhere around here there's a plaque talking about vincent price being here filming for the documentary america screams about the thrill of roller coasters at theme parks we found that plaque that i was telling you about that talks about boardwalk goes hollywood different films that were filmed here of course keeping with horror right down here is the lost boys but check this out right up here in the corner like a little postage stamp you see it vincent price riding the giant dipper in america screams a 1978 television documentary of course other things let's see here ann blyth starred in peabody and the mermaid in 1948 then right over here clint eastwood portrayed notorious police officer dirty harry in the 1983 film sudden impact and of course the main picture back again because of them filming sudden impact oh yeah oops what was it just a stupid tunnel it's right over here facing this way in fact if you squint you can see a lighthouse off in the distance in our footage as well as the movie where jason is building a sand castle or just playing in the sand and the two twins elizabeth moss's kids are making fun of them and they come over and they say that you know jason's a little lame and then jason says he's going to the bathroom and they both say and it's kind of comical why don't you pee in the ocean at the same time and then they say jinx double jinx and then black out hey where are you going to the bathroom the twins lead us into our next little easter egg that jordan peel has so graciously sprinkled throughout this movie this time it's for his love for the movie the shining now the twins in this movie are a direct little tip of the hat to the grady twins from the shining in fact later on whenever they get killed you see them laying in the hallway almost in the same exact way that they were lying dead in the shining cool right to walk through the next scene you have to bear with me i promise it's all going to make sense but after the scene where jason says he's got to use the bathroom the camera cuts to some porta potties right over here against the boardwalk now we know that these porta potties are right next to the vision quest mirror maze which is right over where jessica is because as the camera shows this you can actually see these support beams right here in this scene one two three and four [Music] jessica i love you being a bat i'm not a bat you're not a bat what are you fun you're a spooky fun house i like it so the camera now shows what jason is looking at and he's looking down the beach this way and he sees the homeless guy standing there like some sort of post-apocalyptic scarecrow now what you don't realize he's actually staring at the street where later on in the movie when the family is trying to leave they encounter jason's altar jason's other his name's pluto who lit a car on fire in the middle of the street i don't think it was intentional but i find it odd that the homeless guy is just looking at that street like a foreshadowing into the future now there's a scene where they're trying to leave town it's daylight and they survive the night and they're driving right down this road and they see all the bodies strewn about all the different neighbors who've been killed and then they turn this corner right down here the whole time they're driving down this street jason is practicing his magic trick and he finally gets it to work now there's a winnebago that's parked here right now but you can still see one of the signs that was here from filming it wasn't that long ago but it's still here and then this is the street that they would have turned down and met pluto who lit the car on fire we're gonna line up the shots and just you're gonna love this whoa is that our car it's about this shot right here where they stop and they realize that it's their car that's on fire they stop right about here and they hear something underneath them which we later on find out spoiler alert it's pluto he climbed underneath and he hit a gas line or something he cut something and as they back up they see pluto standing with the burning car behind him how cool is this i mean picture it right where jessica is standing is right where pluto was standing snapping his fingers trying to keep rhythm like his mother told him right oh this is something else and then you're ready for it if you look at the scene a little closer yes you see this blue house and this brown house but look at that telephone pole those yellow bands they're still here but what i'm the most excited about and i was hoping and praying that it was still here and it is is the burn mark on the pavement from whenever they burned the car in the movie look at that i've seen pictures of this i mean right after it was done and the burn mark was pretty dark but it's faded but it's still here you can tell it's pretty wild right i mean who knows how much longer this is going to be here until it fades away for good but at least we're able to capture it for the grimlife collective now you see that building that looks like a christmas candy cane in this scene you can see it in the background as adelaide comes down those steps and you can actually see this green twisted tater building as well as the blue one behind her off in the distance now a little bit further down from where jessica is standing is where she sees the line of people dressed in red the hands across america stretching across the beach it was low tide but across the beach and out into the water i do want to point out that if you look closely the hand of people the hands across america are actually coming down the stairs that they built for this movie the same stairs that adeline would have come down as a kid right it all began here and it all ends here [Music] most of the filming of us took place on the beach side of the boardwalk but they did film a few different scenes over here for instance whenever they came across the ambulance now the ambulance would have been parked right in front of where it says giant dipper in fact you can actually see part of the word in this scene here i can hide here i probably got bandages and stuff and then we get a shot looking down this way where you see zora looking from behind the ambulance you can see where it says paramedics on it as well as that building that's right down there let me go ahead and zoom in a little bit you can see the archway there you go that's about right look it's the line and it's here that we are finally introduced to hands across america she looks down here she gets a dad's attention and says look it's the line looks like some kind of fucked up performance art all right next up is the santa cruz museum of natural history now online it's this place is listed as a filming location but we confirmed with them that they actually didn't film here instead they allowed production to use the park in the back for craft services but there is something down here that jessica really wants to see and once you see it you're gonna be like yup that's her see she's making a beeline for it right now it's a giant whale you got this just be careful look now you can officially say you've wrote you're writing it backwards she doesn't care she just wanted to hug it don't know if he could see it but there's a sea lion right down here in the water he just went under just crazy with that being said thank you for joining us on another grim adventure this time to santa cruz beach and boardwalk this is our vacation home we love coming up here to just kind of get away but today we visited the santa cruz filming locations to jordan peels us and i ran on record and said that jordan peel is a horror
