[Music] I would imagine if you we get a good look at this as ammunition laying all over all over the floor here in the studio that was our little viewer male funny too wasn't they just can't beat blatant gunplay for good solid laughs those away all right we have a fine program I've mentioned that before so why don't we just get on with it shall we my first guest tonight this man a fascinating career in a fascinating individual he became a disc jockey when he was 14 years of age and he has been in show business ever since is one of the most influential and respected writers and performers in American music today and this is his latest album right here please welcome Waylon Jennings [Applause] [Music] all right that's not again nice to see you thanks for being here let me let me ask you about that joke do you hear that joke a lot of people say well Waylon Jennings head did you bring madam the puppet do you ever hear that no I won't start a new act don't amuse Paul from a puppet well he may be available as it turns out so oh yeah they're terrific let me ask you about the album here I was looking back here Waylon and company company vocal sidemen include he got some guys on your of work before Jerry Reed Hank Williams jr. Ernest Tubb I wish my name was Ernest Tubb but that's another story ha ha Emmy Lou Harris Willie Nelson Tony Joe White Waylon Jessi Colter James Garner is that like maverick singing you know that is the James Garner from yeah now how does he happen to appear on your album well James you like with good friends we've been friends for a long time I like the Atmos while he's in his house that night I've had in LA he'll have you know some people over and some musicians and have what we call guitar pulling you know what I can everybody saying you know and he just walks around out here I'm saying harmony you know I couldn't and he loves music and so one time I said won't you let's kind of record on you oh ok you can address them into it I really it was funny like because he had never heard himself you know on tape before singing and he got a little nervous you know but I went in and did the track you know like with a band and like I went out to the bus and stayed out there for the product well here film James you've gotten in there he couldn't wait you know they got his headphones on and started in Arcata trying to record on it that's why Lee came out I said we're friends we've been friends a long time and I'm still your friend and I'm fixing show it to you I think Shirley let you out of this deal he said that sounded terrible out there I said no actually I said you had never done it before us and we're doing he said no really he says now you've got you got to let me out yes because I said I would I'll never couldn't do it and I said well just trust me and he says now that means you and Hollywood you did that that's nice I knew he's gonna put a pin in impressed yeah it saved us a little trouble there you only go back and do it again no no no take two no no in the introduction of mentioned you were working as a disc jockey when you were 14 you're the old ones I've got that right yeah no I didn't know that cause everybody says I was 12 well how does a 14 year old kid get a job doing anything let alone a disc jockey well I knew all this stuff when this guy that owned that station I had a radio program there singing them they're not this man that honestly where was this this is medical technician that's the suburbs of a cotton patch and there's either that or cotton or yeah that he said you know what do we get some program a program of country music and so I said all right and in the other announcers you know they did all the commercials and we had a Wilcox gay and a web core tape recorder and you had to kick both of them to make him stop yeah so my big job was kicking the tape recorder and saying here's the next record now this wasn't your first job in show business was it you actually started performing earlier yeah I have deducted a talent contest and I actually had the program when I was like about 13 you know like me and a guy named bill poem he played lead guitar and I say you know that almost stunted my growth now when you when you finally went to Nashville when you were much older sometime anyone your late teens or early twenties and you had been there for a while you had kind of an interesting way at one point in your career of working with the the Nashville studio musicians I think you're talking about this Merle Haggard is a country singer and he had borrowed my gun I had what is to Buntline he brought it back to me at the studio is that a big gun by the way up on low nose gun yeah but you can't hit nothing with it anyway he brought it back to her there - yeah it's studio and it a host and everything so I thought I'd be clever you know and I went in and I said okay everybody plays the first guy plays a pickup note or if they have a number system where they ride it down instead of the chords which I still don't know what to do if I see a guy looking Jim numbers after we've done it two times I'm gonna blow your fingers off yeah you didn't want them reading the music yeah well I don't think that's music you know let me like if you look at it the third time that means even listening yeah same stuff oh great they mr. Veblen dude well then we gotta go away for a commercial now the guitar is out here are you gonna play in sing for us tonight what is it we'll take him out back in rough email don't worry folks [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] summer Waylon Jennings is here and it turns out he did bring the puppet boy we got a Waylon we got this is a great picture we talked about your early career you said you got started playing and performing about 12 later your DJ at 14 tell us about this early gig as we say well I uh played bass for a while played bass for Buddy Holly yeah you played chase now you were were you in the original cricket so part of the crickets a side guy or what I was like the crickets and uh Norman petty had calls you know kind of a rift between crickets and Buddy Holly I got to say that you know he the truthful anyway they had split for a while they were going back together their to lassen anyway I played bass until they were to be back you know and I he gave me the about two based here in New York gave it to me so don't learn to play it all right yeah this is this is you right backwards no they're right there yeah how old a guy you suppose you are there that was two years old I just woody yeah that's that's a great photo of that was just a few years ago yeah all right nowhere oh and now you and Johnny Cash for a while we're roommates weren't you yeah John sick girl right now and I sure hope he's feeling yeah I hope so too is this look like everything gonna be all right I think so you know he's strong he's a vision no we can't do that here how old were you guys when your roommates and I don't remember how oh I don't remember a lot of things about that [Music] and John wrote a book there's a lot of blank places left I think I was about to mmm 26 27 years old this was in Nashville yeah did you guys do a lot of entertaining dinner parties John was a cook you should see him with that black suit on you know baking powder all over it yeah and I don't know what I did except I kicked the doors down a lot he'll now how what would be why would a person need to kick doors down to get in the other side of the door that's what we did is like you go into John we going in there and like I've been coming in and he'd put the light out of the latch on there yeah and when he gonna sleep sometimes like me and him we don't sleep we went to sleep [Laughter] get in another thing - there ain't nothing feels better than that door given under your foot okay I'll tell you what when I figured out maybe I slowed him down a little bit like I think it's down Alabama one time I went around to all the guys rooms and I thought man that's great I'll scare him to death imagine how are they in Iran back to kick that door there was one of the metal doors I am and I would the thing was is is left play glass windows right beside him but all the big one just hear it it's shattered well that's so you got a little something out of it yeah yeah I also found out too that maybe I was a little bit scared of it anymore well when I got Quran says what happened I said some kids or so you know we had to do some that is well just we'll set up some doors and anybody who would like to come on yourself included certainly and we'll just we'll kick them in if it's [Applause] if isn't that big a thrill and then I'll grab the guy on the back back you know what I think he'll most push me through one while ago is that right yeah no are you gonna we're gonna sing here now and okay we got to go away for it with station identification all right you can hang around long enough to sing one song can't you yeah all right all right good enough we got a pause for station [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] coming up in the next half hour they show Marv Albert will be here also Rita Rudner Monday we got another great show actor Dennis Quaid did you see the right stuff Boylan yeah yeah he's terrific in their plays Gordon Cooper he will be here also comedian Sandra Bernhardt and we have kid inventors Curtis Lawson and Lewis Barton that'll be Monday and also it's key night so anybody in the studio audience who needs duplicates of their keys made this would be the place to be on Monday night yeah what are you gonna sing for us tonight a song about Nashville see if the hillbillies having it says humor about themself all right dad Waylon Jennings [Music] there's the latest news mayor spill some of it a little bit rough like Charlie Daniels new des jahres on TV 7 slow George Jones but drinking in the cma made him number one on their TV [Music] we have a wonderful we have a wonderful program for you folks tonight can I see that the last picture again the one of the gentlemen licking the envelope there you know if I thought this was actually what our viewers looked like when mailing in the letters we would have discontinued the mail segment years ago and also we want to clear up one other thing mr. producer but there was another nomination for Ghost Busters was also nominated for best risotto joke is completely wrong now yeah okay thank you very much but that's that's the way that goes all right my first guest tonight certainly one of the true legends of the music world he is appearing with Waylon Jennings right across the street at Radio City Music Hall tomorrow night through Sunday night and were really delighted to have him here with us please hallo to Johnny Cash [Applause] you look good thank you very much you like being in New York City just great yeah do you come here often yeah I have an apartment here oh really you have my wife and I've had an apartment here about seven or eight years you know this afternoon when I saw you and some friends ears come down the the sixth floor hallway there is such an overwhelming presence that that you give off or that you have it's just I can't imagine you walking down the streets of this city without being just besieged by folks you have trouble with that well not really trouble we you know I don't lock myself away I enjoy my freedom I enjoy I enjoy in New York City you get out and mingle with the folks you know I go to movies yes I do all that I like to do do you find that they come right up to you or are they a little bit because in all honesty when I saw and some of the other folks on the staff you feel like oh my god and you kind of want to stand back well I feel like there may be trouble no no trouble yeah I enjoy meeting people yeah you know that's what my music is all about people yeah I was talking to you in the makeup room about a television show you did in 1969 I guess it was just called the Johnny Cash show done out of Nashville yeah one of the best music shows probably ever right well thank you we had we did 60 and all we did 10 summer replacements of show called operation entertainment in 1969 then we did two seasons 70 and 71 from the old Grand Ole Opry house it was the first Network show out of Nashville it was pretty much just all music wasn't music and some talk that was yeah nobody coming out in duck suits or anything it was just all no it was uh it was we really did it the hard way the temperature in that building would get over a hundred two hundred degrees in the summer and it was you couldn't air-conditioned the building there it was so old and but the facilities were were good it's nice was just we have on the show we had we had just about everybody we had Bob Dylan on the show we had Mahalia Jackson Bob Hope Louie Armstrong we had folk singers like Jack Elliott Pete Seeger with a Glen Campbell Waylon Jennings we had country artists we had Peggy Lee we had you know everybody we also had first Network appearance by people like Kenny Rogers in the first edition also on the show was the who Creedence Clearwater Revival they did their first appearance on my show this was serious stuff wasn't because there in those days there I don't correct me if I'm wrong I guess but I don't recall any other show maybe that was that open to that wide range of musical talents well music is for everybody and although I'm a country known as a country artist then it was a network show and I wanted to see some people up on the show that I knew that the people or you see yeah I brought this magazine out because I heard that every time you got a country artist on the show you send over to the office of country music magazine to find out everything that you can about that person so I just brought you the latest dish okay you don't haven't have a piece of this thing to use Oh talk a little bit about the the story you were telling me before about one night at your house in Nashville when people would come in to do the show they may often stay that was January 1969 and a Bob Dylan was there he was doing his neighing at your house and it was done it's Nashville Skyline album and that's when we did a lot of things in the studio together and bootlegging that lately but anyway Dylan was there and Kristofferson Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash and shel silverstein and I was telling you that that that night in my house the first time these songs were heard Joni Mitchell sing both sides now Graham they sing Marrakesh Express shel silverstein sing a boy named Sue and Bob Dylan sing lay lady lay and Kristofferson sing me and Bobby McGee good happens the first time any of those songs we heard those if it happens did you have snacks [Music] I'll tell you what when we come back now you are gonna sing something for us tonight I'd love to alright new song I wanna do for it Chris wrote it okay well we'll talk a little bit about that and some other stuff we'll be right back with John [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] terrific and we've added tell the folks who we've added here tonight Marty Stewart works with me and plays the mandolin guitar fiddle he's playing mandolin tonight what do you what are you gonna sing Jeff I want to do a new song written by Kris Kristofferson I've been working with Kris and winter Nelson and Waylon Jennings lately and Chris has written the best songs I think he ever wrote and recently you know and I've recorded two or three my like to do one this song paints a picture it's from the inspired by the movie Grapes of Wrath it's called here comes a rainbow again all right [Music] [Applause] Sneed was a small roadside cafe the waitress was sleepin - front driver's drinking their coffee and - okie kids by the tool candies the Aster how much have you got she replied we've only a penny between us those two for a penny she lied and the daylight through heavy with thunder and the smell of the rain all the win hey just like a human here comes a rainbow [Music] one truck driver said to the waitress after the kids went outside them candies ate two for a penny so what's it to you she replied in silence we finish their coffee [Music] she called hey you left too much money so what's it to you they require [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the smell of rain [Music] [Applause] [Music] here comes a train bogie [Music] [Applause] very nice good heavens now this is I like this this is nice we're not Waylon you were here was it just about a year ago about a year ago I think so yeah and at the time we were talking a little bit about there was a period in your lives when you guys were roommates now where did this take place what was a let's get Johnny's that post regular hotel not the the Madison apartments and Americans won't see I had the apartment evildea well you did not nod at the cleaning and you look I'll never forget John men I never saw anything as funny [Music] yeah yeah interesting article in here about Ernest Tubb [Applause] but you know I you know also what I wanted to say I think when you were here johnny was a little under the weather yeah it was really worried about him yeah yeah he came out of luck chance Oh under the weather unit was that when I was an alcohol and drug treatment oh no you I was I was still on drugs use offer but no yeah oh okay I may have been off him but that that was go up here of my life when the only person that would talk to me is the Lord and the only woman that would have it was Betty forward you bring up an interesting point there's an article a little mention here in one of the New York City papers are trying to give you an opening to ask me about all that talk about it tell me all you want to know what all I want to know about it well no what is it you want to ask no no you know you're you're go ahead and I think what you got to say is probably more interesting than what I don't have anything so really I was kidding you know you weren't one out of six people these people don't want to hear about alcohol and drug abuse and how to control it and stop it they don't figure yeah not on the show no I'm not well you know I'm interested in Whelan's remark that when he was on the show you were off drugs but he was still on so in a certain respect this is your first appearance on the show then isn't it I'm not sure we got our money's worth it you probably got more than you bargained for but anyway everything's good in your life again that's great well at what length of time how many years did you go by under this haze and blur no well I remember most everything I had periods of blackout when I was you know I got you can always find excuses for taking drugs sometime it was a pain a broken bone and I would take mood-altering painkillers you know but how often would you get a broken bone I kept I kept a hammer in one pot no you know I read an article about me and one of these papers recently about Johnny Cash was on mood altering pain medication because of his cowboy boots the high heels gave him back pain all the excuses were used for taking drugs like like wife left here are you washed didn't leave yeah are you dog daddy you don't didn't that it's Monday or it's Saturday anyone goes anything is a good reason was a good reason for taking drugs to answer your question I started taking them in 1958 amphetamines and barbiturates 1958 mhm yeah 59 to get up and come down you know and then I controlled it pretty well for a while like he can do but pretty since like the alcoholic drinks out of the bottle and finally the bottle starts drinking out am the pills were starting to take me in 1967 with the help of June and and my faith in their religion and willpower I managed to stop for a long long time but it was a broken bone that got me started back to taking the medication again yeah pain medication and then it would make me nervous so it takes something to go to sleep and then I take something to get up in the morning you know the business like Kris Kristofferson was here not too long ago and he seemed to indicate that he was kind of no longer on autopilot and that he seemed to be things were you know a little clearer to him did you notice a big difference when you've got things to squared away as far as performing and writing in oh yeah yeah I remember everything last 14 months I it's a beautiful life a straight life is now Waylon does does this do you have a similar story here was this pretty much I was on drugs for 21 years almost solid you know and I like John I had a blackout times too but I remember most of it too I've been off for like going on my 11th month now well but now the two of you but don't screw it up alright are you going to 11 mice how would you change I'll tell you I wouldn't change it in saying and I mean and I and I had it bad you know well 21 years yeah that's not just like a casual flirtation it's like a Paul Kennedy a songwriter national he's from England and he asked me how much how much drugs I did a date and and I told him you know was over a thousand dollars a day and he said he said don't you think that was a trifle excessive oh my god good heavens yeah you can't believe what that can do for your taxes to you now this I'm guessing is gonna be one hell of a show this is uh Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash tomorrow night through Sunday night any anybody else who will jump Carter and Jessi Colter oh so you guys are being chaperoned not a bad idea Johnny it was a real pleasure to meet you quite a thrill and Wayland nice to see you again come back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you [Music] we're delighted to have him back on the program tonight ladies and gentlemen please welcome Waylon Jennings Waylon [Applause] [Music] if you knew - ooh I need you Vegas my parachute [Music] the issue [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know we were talking about the song Peggy Sue and about Buddy Holly and the crickets and you said you were actually his protege right yeah that's been 31 years ago and that's hard to believe it's already and you said that you was selected that song to do here tonight because you thought all um the guys will get a kick out a plan yeah we were talking before I came up here yeah yeah you did a great job ha ha nice job and in addition to that we have here a sample of West Texas style barbecue sauce it's your own brand of the barbarians yeah yeah this is only a sample you get it we apply this with an eyedropper I think those big Texas sized steaks we start out with little uh-huh but you actually are selling this oh yeah we got it instant we got all the night salad dressing barbecue sauce can see it yeah bill yeah maybe no way every night well you got to go for it thanks for being here good night everybody [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] alright next guest is a country music legend this is certainly true not many people you can actually accurately say that about this is the case tonight an honest to god a country music legend this man is responsible for over 60 albums in his career his latest is right here it's called too dumb for New York City too ugly for LA ladies and gentlemen please welcome back to the program Waylon Jennings [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I saw New York City I was green down to the cold never see my redneck Louis or am I [Music] between the hustlers and the I must step made their day will be like an apple [Music] you pushed it shoved and almost murdered ain't no place to be [Music] do your game me from sea to shining sea and coast to coast [Music] somewhere is the land I love the most on you pretty okay survived the Great White Way I'm too dumb for New York City and too ugly for Ellie [Music] I made my way to Tinseltown for Hollywood and Vine pretty faces I surely find a place for that the way I talk they'll paint on every word but don't call me I'll call you [Music] hate what they tell her to buy at least in New York City there's never any [Music] from sea to shining sea and coast to coast somewhere in the middle is a land bowl I California pretty I can't survive the Great White Way - dumb New York City and you [Music] to die for New York City and to earth before LA [Music] anybody's woman always a pleasure to have you with us Raylan like [Applause] [Music] okay we are very very happy and excited to have our next guest back with us here tonight he is a truly a legend in the music world and tomorrow night this man will be playing the big Bob Dylan tribute taking place at Madison Square Garden here in New York City ladies and gentlemen as I said before quite a pleasure to welcome him back to the program the man in black Johnny Cash [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how many roads must a man who walked out before you can call him a man [Music] how many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps and was there yes and how many times must the cannonballs fly before they are forever bad the answer my friend is blowin in the wind the answer is blowin in the wind yes and how many years get out Melton exist people is washed in the sea yes at how years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free yes many times can a man turn astiz and pretend that he just doesn't see answer my friend this blow and it we'll be answer is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] many times again see the sky many years must one before he can hear people cry yes will it take till you knows that many people have it's lower than and the win [Music] my friend the answer is blowin [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] well thank you it's a it's a thrill to have you here it was great to hear the song and it was great fun to see the audience go nuts for you like that well I gotta tell you I was a little bit scared it's the first time I've ever performed that so is that right no now why do I think that that's not true I mean it seems like that must have been a song you sung jeez a lot yeah well maybe you think I'm a liar and I don't get me started here okay ah welcome back to New York City do you like your time in New York City do you enjoy coming to New York I always do yeah yeah June and I had an apartment here for about 1215 years in Central Park South and we always enjoy in New York got a lot of friends here and I like to come to the book stores I got greatest bookstores in the world I think in New York have you seen naughty were corresponding before we ever met you know I I wrote him to tell him I loved his work when his first album came out I got a letter right back from him and we wrote a lot back then we're still write back and forth because we don't see each other very often but I met him the first time at the Newport Folk Festival in 64 yeah and what is the tribute for tomorrow and what's it all about and what will be your role in it well to me it's a celebration of the great music of Bob Dylan and my role would be to do a song with my wife Jim Carter we're doing it ain't me babe I'm sorry great which we recorded you know that'll be terrific thank you no and not many people in in show business in music can do it but the true mark of a great star is somebody who survives and dominates the test of time and you certainly have done that and it's a real thrill to have you here thanks nice to see you [Applause] [Music] fire [Music] editor Andrew the rain of fire bus [Applause] that's something that gut gives you chills doesn't he that was incredible great great man great career and terrific I'll be at the Dylan tribute what are you doing at the Dillion I'm gonna be doing all along the watchtower oh that's not your doing that acoustically I'm doing an acoustic lead on the acoustic guitar and of course the harmonica iced tea or as I call it the harp yeah come on come on [Music] you know ladies and gentlemen if you stop and think about it there really is only about a handful of when it comes to music real kind of deal honest true spectacular legendary performers working in music anymore so here now one of the best real deals around Johnny Cash Johnny [Applause] thank you [Music] a young cowboy named Billy Joe grew Restless on the farm a boy filled with wonder lust - really meant no harm he changed his clothes and shine his boots and combed his dark hair down and his mother cried as he walked out don't take your guns the town son leave you guns in Old Mill don't take your guns to town he laughed and kissed his mom and said chose man Judis quick and straight but without a cause I got nobody down but she cried again as he rolled away don't take your guns in the town son leave your guns at home bill don't take you go [Music] he's saying song is on hero his guns hung at his hips he wrote it to a cattle town he stopped and walked into a bar and lay this money down and his mother's words that code again don't take your gun the town gun to home [Music] he's ranked his first strong liquor all this shaking man and they try to tell a mess of it take a bow get his side [Music] words that code here don't take your gun [Music] don't take your guns down [Music] would rage than billy-joe reach for his gun wrong this gun and fire before I even saw as Billy Joe fell to the floor the crowd all gathered round and one and his fine don't take your guns to town son leave your guns at home bill don't take your guns to town [Music] Johnny Cash [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Johnny Cash you know I have such great respect for you I love your music I love your voice there there's an honesty to what you sing and what you perform and also when you listen to your music you get a little scared and I think you have to be a little because you know life's tough you got to do a little scared yeah you did that song right here in this theater how long ago thirty five years ago last month Wow the old Ed Sullivan Show did you like being on The Ed Sullivan Show well I was really uncomfortable actually it was my second appearance on a network TV show in New York and I don't know I was on after a thorough juggling act or a train goat I'm not sure which and well tonight yeah they followed disco music Johnny I'm sorry haha I like Paul's version of last date that's great comes to this town in the Rio Grande where the two kooky kid steals all the cookies and the man in black comes back in to save the town and get all the cookies back and you're the guy who returns law and order to the yeah and get them their cookies back he gives up Johnny Cash is returning your cookies kids daddy it's a great thrill please come back there you go folks we're out of time this year tomorrow [Music] [Applause] we we didn't tell those guys they were gonna be on a helicopter they thought they were taking the cab all the way to the airport so the helicopter was a little surprised and I think you can tell by looking at those two guys as they were getting into that thing their expressions were the personification of terror not only is our next guest an icon in American music he is also the walking definition of cool tonight this man is performing a song from his new CD entitled American Recordings which recently received a five-star review very rare in Rolling Stone magazine ladies and gentlemen here he is Johnny Cash [Applause] yeah Oh Delia Delia all my life if I hadn't a shot for Delia I had a had her for my wife Delia's gone one more round Delia's gone I went up to on the highway there were oh yeah that's I heard the record now but I didn't hear nobody pray yeah it was my mama my mama used to turn that record up or turn the radio up when she hear Roy Acuff hear nobody pray [Applause] on the highway but I didn't hear nobody pray it's gonna go on for a while looks like they're looking for a replacement for Billy Ray Cyrus and then and there and then there's like outlaw music and that's that's what I think of when I think of you and what you've done all your life and it just it's going are you still are you are you out on the road and I are you - I've been on the road since kitty whales was a girl scout I'm still on the road you know what I enjoyed the road I don't like getting you're having to get there but once I get to I enjoy playing
