I'm supposed to talk about set preparation which is as all things are with me I will get extremely practical down to the nitty gritty but ultimately I'm going to deal with some hard stuff and and some you know overarching big picture things first because I just think it's really really important that we understand what we're trying to do here you know when we put together a worship set you know there are a lot of different methods for putting together worship set there's some super uber spiritual ways of putting the other a worship set in a like meditating and getting divine downloads from the Lord that sort of thing you know and then there's some absolutely completely unspiritual ways of getting worship sets you know and there's lots of different groups of people and how they put together their sets and some people just choose the songs that are popular and that people will lift their hands to you know that works for them they don't need a whole lot more than that some are actually paying attention to the top CC Li charts and you know cuz that's pretty good indication of whether a songs working or not and or what songs are on the radio so on and so forth and um some sometimes like Paul Bosch is mentioning you know there are suggestions from the pastor you know sometimes you're not actually the one preparing your set there's always that's a fun one for me wooof but um uh other groups like it's all about what I'm feeling you know what songs am I feeling you know and there's honestly really no grid it's it's all about whatever they're feeling and and then there's a group that plans sets with some kind of framework they have a grid they have a way of thinking through they they put things through well let's just say they have a destination and they're taking people from point A to point B and they're they're very methodical about how they get there and ultimately I'd love to be all three the best of all three in a lot of ways I I don't like I'm just this is all well this is all free stuff at the top here I I have to feel the songs that I'm singing I have to if they don't make a connection to my heart I usually just don't leave them but I'll say that at the same time if I watch a song that hasn't connected with me personally but I see it done in a worship set and a whole room respond to it I'm moved by that and I'll leave that song because it's doing something the hearts of people and it's lifting them to connect with them so I'll put my own personal preferences aside and I will lead songs that I don't perhaps love but what I love is what they're doing to the church you know so I'm and I also like a framework I like I'm like hey here's the starting point and here's an ending point and this is where we're taking people you know I like leaders with vision so I kind of want to hit on all three but because I think a great worship set flows from a great understanding of what the role of a worship leader is and what a corporate worship time is meant to be all about so and I really believe that if you have an understanding of this it will make a huge difference in the consistency in the power and the anointing that you will operate it just my my personal take so let me just ask you guys a question what is a worship leaders role what is a corporate worship time supposed to be about we're leading people where are we leading them to Jesus if in doubt just say Jesus okay yeah it's good his presence I heard that um yeah well this is so good you guys are just dialed in I believe you are supposed to lead people into an encounter with the almighty Living God into intimacy it's my personal belief and I'm going to focus on this word intimacy real quick if I'm flying it's because I got a lot of material to get through in 19 minutes and 40 seconds so just go with me on this journey I am going to land this plane promised the pinnacle the destination of all human relationships is intimacy it's where they're all going sometimes we don't even know where we're going we just got we're just run by our appetites but every appetite that you have what you crave most of all is to be known to be seen and honestly God designed it this way you know if you go back with me to to the Garden of Eden you know long before there were churches long before there was mass you know before religion before liturgy before Sunday morning services before all the different means and methods and programs in ways that humanity has come up with to connect with God long before any of those means and devices they were simply God and there was man and there was no obstacle it was no separation and they were in a garden which my wife likes that because she's super organic and she loves the earth and she loves to garden and it's super interesting if you read in Genesis it says the very first thing that God did is we he made a garden you know which is awesome you know just think about that just beautiful she make all you hippies happy and okay this is how he designed us to function we were made to be in his presence zero separation intimacy with God is what was lost in the fall and it was God spilt his sons blood to regain and it's funny to me that human nature and religion and we have created so many obstacles so many to do so many ways to get to God and all of them in many ways are incredibly unnecessary to me and I I can get really really frustrated because every time that we gather guys every time that we get together as the body of Christ we have the ability to step right in to the presence of the King of Kings right in greatest beauty of the Cross is it dealt with the one obstacle that stood in the way and I just I get very frustrated and tired with so much of the church staying on the outside of the very thing that God has given us back you know he's giving us giving this back to us he's given us access back into his presence and to big deal and so let me talk about this word intimacy man I'm chewing through way too much but whatever didn't just hang with me when I talk about intimacy I mean closeness I mean a place where there's no separation there are no more masks there are no more fear there's no insecurities there's only complete vulnerability complete transparency perfect communion and the problem with with us to be honest is that way that were really really scared of intimacy we're scared of intimacy with each other let alone with the almighty Living God and even though it so ironically as most things in life are the very thing that we're so desperate for is the very thing that we're really frightened of you know you ever got together the group of guys I guys are all I know guys gals I've never sat in a gals grouping well I have probably and I it's not really my favorite place to be but um but I have sat down with a group of guys you'd be like you know you ever get guys to try and share their hearts so you know the real stuff of what's going on in their lives you're like hey Samantha what's going on with you I'm good sit down with a guys group and you try and discuss like hey what's going into your life so what are you guys struggling with well you know I'm really struggling with being is nice to my neighbor as I should that's bull crap number one that is not the deepest issue that you're struggling with in life you know it takes it's like you have to work so hard to get a guy to share what's actually going on his life now at the time it's because he's unaware but half the time is because they're all scared crapless you know that's such a bad word but they're all scared scared okay uh to be intimate with each other we don't like being vulnerable we're exposed you know intimacy is incredibly controversial intimate language is incredibly controversial you know who has not had the sloppy wet kiss debate here huh it's like which group are you oh I'm the unforeseen kiss you know oh no I'm the sloppy wet kiss giving me at all you know yeah I go okay all right yes okay you know and everything in between those those groups of people um it's not hard to see but here's the deal scared of it or not this is where this thing is going this is where God designed it this is actually what you're so hungry for this is what you were made for the only place where you're going to be healthy and whole is in complete transparency where you are naked and I'm not even speaking literally but you are naked before God in his presence this is the only place of wholeness this is where we were made - and this is what God is you know he's bringing his people his church back into this is why we're called to lead people because this is where actual change happens change does not happen outside of intimacy it happens when you're actually impacted your whole person is impacted with the presence and the majesty and the glory and the overwhelming love that is God that's what changes people so what does this have to do asset preparation this has everything to do asset preparation if intimacy is the goal on people or who were leading we have to grow an understanding of how both work let me just ask you guys another quick question because we really do need to understand and I'm going to try and drive this point home really really quickly even though I've made it very complicated with my outline here to do that but how do human beings how do we become intimate with each other okay and I'm not looking for the National Geographic version of that of that we all know how that works hopefully but I'm looking for just the basics how do we become intimate with each other if you want to get to know somebody how do you get to know them there you go time is huge communication all that good stuff the point I want to drive home in all of this and this in this talk is that intimacy if you don't remember anything else remember this intimacy is a progression there are thousands of ways to illustrate this progression the funny ways to illustrate it are the bad ways or people err on on they do this wrong have you ever struck up with a conversation maybe you're at a party or something and someone comes up to you like hey how are you doing and you know hey I don't know you and you're just trying to make conversation and and then you ask them something very very light and surfacy which is you know you know like a good politically correct person would and and and all of a sudden they begin to unload their entire life story and the deep deep details of their personal lives how's that make you feel awkward there are many many worship sets that do this yeah anyone worried you're just going to slip and fall into an affair like oh my gosh I don't know how that happened well upside the the tremendous amount of alcohol or drugs you're not going to have that problem okay because Affairs don't happen that way how do Affairs happen they happen over a long period of time where someone allows a progression to happen what is that progression that progression is intimacy and it starts very very normal it starts very very natural it starts very very innocent which is why it's hard to detect then all of a sudden your heart's caught up and you don't even know what's going on how many marriages could be oh so enriched if men could understand the concept that intimacy doesn't go from zero to 100 miles an hour oh yeah there you go someone's preaching it's good we won't go too deep into that one but us the point is intimacy does not happen nine times out of 10 from the get-go it is a progression it involves ever deepening levels miss this progression and you will miss true intimacy every time because we were not designed to jump right into the deep waters of intimacy lickety-split it's also why nine times out of ten a really deep intimate song of worship will not work it will fall flat on its face if you lead it right out the gate I've watched it happen a lot you got a worship leader that's charge just ready to jump right into the thick of it and they try and take people somewhere they're just not ready to go bottom line our worship sets need to chart this progression of intimacy and I'm going to get specific John Wimber is one of the very verse people that I heard talk about this he was the founding one of the founding guys a founding father of the vinyard movement and who birthed really burst this idea of intimacy in worship it was revolutionary at the time and he called it phases of the heart and I'm going to I'm going to rip him off a little bit here what am I making my point here with that intimacy you guys understand what I'm saying I want to get really really specific here with with what I mean and these phases of the heart these um I'm going to basically I'm going to name a core 3 and then I'm going to walk you through 4 okay but if you if you remember nothing else I want you to remember the core the core 3 and I actually categorize songs like this I don't actually have a worship folder anymore I just have kind of a paper um a whole list of songs and I've got them broken down into these four categories essentially the first category well let me give you the categories and then and then I'm so you can write them all down and then I'll talk about them okay is that good first category songs of imitation songs of invitation that's all right my slurred second category songs of declaration praise songs of declaration praise third category songs of response fourth category songs for encounter force category songs of invitation um uh I've got to update my talk here cuz all my examples are super dated I've got like come now is the time to worship yeah and that song was taken over the 90s with the with a vengeance but come now is the time to worship it's actually not saying God is good God's amazing it's not actually declaring or praising it's saying hey the time that we're about to step into right now is a time of worship this is what we're doing this is where we're going folks let's all get on board there are a number of different songs that do this kind of a thing and a lot of times depending they can be very very powerful you know because you got to remember when a group of people enter into a room they are not where you are at as a worship leader or you or your team is at because you know just just a little insight into me if I lead worship Bethel here functions they got an 8 o'clock service and they got a 10:30 service so and practice rehearsal starts 650 is when we get access to the sanctuary and I get up on a Sunday morning when I have to lead I get up about 4 o'clock in the morning and it's not all spiritual some of it is spiritual some of it is because I don't sing in the morning ok my voice does not work in the morning and if I want it to work I have to get up that early in order to be able to sing ok I have had tremendous I've had tons of vocal problems I could talk to you all day about my vocal problems and tons of acid reflux issues and that would be a whole nother you know conversation but to this day one of the things I have to do is I have to spend a long time especially in the morning warming my voice up you know and I've learned that if I try and push my voice into getting somewhere too soon it'll actually destroy it so I start really really slow really soft and sometimes the other thing is I just won't come with a fire I don't want to walk into a rehearsal just kind of this stupor you know actually I'm not a morning person either FYI so you know if I've been awake two hours I start to feel like a human being and and when I walk into rehearsal I don't feel like I'm just trying to survive I feel like you know we can get somewhere you know with the Lord so anyway um when I get a bat early and I've spent that much time by the time I even walk into rehearsal I'm generally feeling pretty a lot you know in the Lord most days you know and by the time I'm finished rehearsal like I personally I've dial I'm ready to go somewhere but hey all I know is from from experience of being just a normal person who's attending churches that is not where your average first in the day in church is coming from okay they are they scrambled they got up much later than you they probably didn't get their coffee it depends which service they they attended and them if they're like me getting your kids into the car okay on time to church and into their classes you lose your salvation by the time you get to church yeah it's like you might have wanted to connect with God and now you're just mad you know and you if a worship leader starts out with you know you're just like yeah not there sweetheart not there no it's not there and you need someone to take you from that place and to lead you into a place where your heart becomes soft and all of a sudden you're like yeah thank you okay this is this is where people are coming from and when in in this kind of environment a song of invitation saying hey this is what we're here to do it summons like I could feel like yeah I'm gonna fix my eyes yeah okay I remember this is what I'm here for okay that's what this phase is all about the second phase is just like it songs of praise and songs of declaration I think it's super important you don't start a worship set off with songs every font songs that where you are immediately the focus whether it's you lifting your hands you doing something this is not the focus I say if worship as a response to who God has set the table initially with who God is declare who he is give people something to respond to okay whether it is you know how great is our God is just a classic example the splendor for the king robed in majesty there's not anything about us and that okay you know the Lion of land the lion and lamb how great is our God the name above all names da-da-da-da-da you get the point okay there are songs that literally do nothing but declare who God is and honestly if I'm going to funk as a worship leader this is where I spend all my time and I do it until my own heart comes alive because there's only so much of singing about Jesus I can do in my heart not not get engaged somewhere along the way you know usually by the second song of just going after it singing about his faithfulness singing about his goodness something comes alive I me a spirit of worship comes on me and the same happens for people I could just go through a list guys but I encourage you to do this I encourage you to categorize your songs where are the songs of declaration what are they obviously there's going to be some hybrids we stand and lift up our hands that's a response for the joy of the Lord is our strength the chorus is all declaration holy is the Lord God Almighty the earth is filled with his glory okay you're gonna find hybrids like that it's not always cleaning cutting you know but you get the point songs response third category songs response have their power if people have been given something to respond to so um you know I came to my rescue I'm falling on my knees in worship this is a song of like beautiful it's a beautiful song of response and it's what people are ready to do if you have set the table with who got it and you've spent some time and there people are just longing they're already doing it they're already there the hearts are already cracked open and when you lead them into a song of response it's just like effortless there's not work where am I came to my rescue to stand always forever my soul sings lord I give you my heart just you know it's not all those are super you know up-to-date examples but maybe you get the point but some the last the last category I would say is songs for encounter and um I generally there are a few songs I just stumble upon every now and then that they just need a holy moment in order to have the power and and they need to be set up in such a way you know that if you leave them apart from that room being in a place that's you know ready for that open cracked open for that like light of your face I just remember this you know um Lord bless me keep me cause your face to shine on me little be gracious like that song has power and one scent in one setting and then it has a whole nother power if it's if it's set up in the right in the right moment and sometimes when I work a real song of encounter I feel like this song just carries and oftentimes guys I'll build my whole set around a song that I feel has the encounter and I you know like especially a baffle amount of time and I'm just going to keep talking a little bit but um this is how I think I'm looking for the song that I just feel like this is the moment somehow this song is the moment and there's something that's going to happen there's something that's going to be broken open here and I and I work to set that song up and I work within the paradigm that I that I just laid out for you like I lay out my songs of praise I lay out my songs of declaration I lay out my song as a response and sometimes even within songs a response or sometimes it's within the song of declaration to be to be totally honest but whatever it is there's a song that just hits me and I know that there's there's something in that song it's going to be released and and I make sure to set that moment up most of the time it's later on in the set you know Bill has a very simple way of summing those hold everything he's like don't start where you want to end up ya ass I coulda just said that and I just been you know good been all done don't start where you want to end up I will lead people into that moment that I feel like lists what the Lord wants to release here you know the biggest trick that I have a hit in all this probably the biggest thing is co-leading which I don't have time to hit into that here at Bethel we co-lead almost excuse it's where I don't co-lead and it's always a little tricky but um because basically we try and give them as much freedom as possible to just submit their songs you know and and I try and work within their hearts into what's in my heart and that kind of a thing most of the time a lot of the times though I will give some input you know into into the direction especially if I feel very specific about where sets going to go I say hey what do you think about this song I feel it fits perfectly and that kind of a thing and most of the time that works out pretty good but anyway guys I know there's probably tons of questions I try to do the best I could with the time given and so there you have it you
