so hopefully today my goal would be to UM I would like to be a little more practical in this session because I don't think I've been super practical my other sessions um be a little more practical more hands-on and um hopefully talk about some through experience some stuff you know cuz how many are from churches that um you'd say like you've got your the worship leader or a worship leader and you've got like 100 percent just free freedom to do whatever raise your hand there's like oh my good - what yeah just kind of leave whatever songs go as long as you want whatever bridge Han kid night okay wow that's amazing so so what does that look like go ahead yeah I'll repeat your answer on the mic so it's on the mic oh there we go so he's stuck man he doesn't have a choice uh oh yeah I know you work yep yeah Wow you have something yeah yeah right perfect see that's the thing I've noticed with Jen and I like um it takes a while to get there but when you when you're working in team you know um sometimes it's like it could be hard you know two completely different people and sometimes two completely different visions and sometimes come to different directions you know like your Holy Spirit's telling you this direction well my Holy Spirit's Tommy this direction and so you're like your own it's almost like what's Holy Spirit is right you know it's I gotta complicate gets complicated but that's all part of it you know I um I remember a story Dom Potter told us used to come here years ago he's like one of the fathers of uh just really imparting to us you know here in that whole prophetic kind of worship camp and um he told us a story about how when he used to work with Rick Joyner back at morning story and he said the first time he led worship Rick said um some of you prior heard this story but he says Rick says he says you got 30 minutes and so he's like all right so he gets up there and like he's like man just nonny just fell and I went two hours two and a half hours and and um yeah and um Rick pulled him into his office afterwards and said basically like what are you doing you know like what was that we talked about 30 minutes you know and uh and so he had a little that conversation do you know what I mean how many have had that conversation yeah it's good so next time he got up Rick's like 30 minutes at 20 and he says it's like God played a trick on him you know Dawn's telling the story about how 29 minutes um it's like they'd only just fell and he's just like man you know I mean and he stopped it at 30 minutes and the opposite effect happen Rick Joyner was like no but what happened in that moment what happened in that moment is what needs to happen at all of our churches is there's that thing that happens where I get you you get me one on the same page and there's a trust that loyalty thing that like I'm honoring your leadership but in the same regard the pastor is honoring your ability to hear and sense where God is going to and so the goal would be that the outcome is your trusted by leadership and you can flow in and out of songs and into the spontaneous and your and if you fall off a cliff you fall to cliff together because there's nothing worse than falling off that cliff you don't talk about and you're alone and you get the hey what was that you know what is that you don't I mean so I always tell like a helpful thing to do with worship leaders ISM talk to the pastor beforehand just say here's my plan you know my dad used to it early on with this worship pastor back at Weber real days not everyone has the luxury of starting small and believing that is a luxury because you get to try everything out in a smaller setting and the beauty of that is if it doesn't go well not as many people were a part of the not going well in the downside as if it does go well not as many people were a part of seeing you awesome but it is a good tension I remember one time we were did the Nashville call 80,000 people there and I was pumped right I'm like yes you know this I'm excited and I was excited until we got to soundcheck and the keyboard was mono and I had all my songs arranged to be keyboard lead in front of 80,000 people and it didn't work so I'm in front of 80,000 people and I was pumped thinking this is gonna be amazing and I get up there and it was so hard so just remember that it's better to go through all that stuff in that process so with a small group of people in a small setting than to be up in front of 80,000 people basically in your underwear that's what it felt like exposed there's pros and cons of each world and I'm really on thinking man I wish I wish this would happen faster I wish man this album this this undone album and this is gonna change the world y'all I don't talk about you come out your album you're like this is it this is it for me I'm this sounds gonna come out you know what I mean this song and any and you sing it and you're like oh if you're gonna be honest instead of like oh man it's not but in God's timing everything is amazing because I thank God really do I thank the Lord that like back then when we were having babies that it wasn't happening serious I get all choked up seriously because in God he gives us what we can handle and a lot of times like Amanda was saying the tension that we're feeling isn't actually the healthy tension being in the middle we're going from left to right hitting our heads against the wall trying to get out of this box out of this thing that God's got us in this cage when we're out is we just need to be peaceful in the center of it going he's got us in that healthy tension in our time he was gonna have his way and he can turn your life on a dime it's amazing all right let's get back to this what were we talking about before that do you guys remember do you remember the goal of being every Church that you have the freedom and the authority from the pastor so there's a mutual trust there honoring the point so you hear that phrase said a lot from me and Jenn when we teach is honoring the point and it came from my dad and I'm the story goes like this so when I was a kid we had this hunting dog German Shorthair right pointer how many hunts in this room yo well part of my job on this earth is to change that you know in the worship leader world you know like this all this whole thing this is just a facade this is just to get my foot in the door but behind all this you know is a camo and like John Deere hat and tractor and hunting so and if you come to my house to my DAF you will see that I will not be wearing any of this kind of attire right Josh I'll be hanging out with the goats which by the way we just had a baby goat the other day I didn't post it because I'm always posting pictures of chicken eggs and goats and an editor that follows he's like what are you do what I don't you cares about goats and chickens while I do care okay it's part of my mission in life is to expand the hipster worship leader mindset from cement walls in the studio today Portland mindset to to the meat and potatoes in the heart of America the nuts and bolts of how the miracles form and shaped farming and you don't I'm saying okay not for that not for that honoring the point German Shorthair dog so the way this dog worked was you you go onto a field and you'd let the dog go in and go back and forth and what would happen is it would it would go back and forth and then it they call it a pointer because what it does it puts its leg up like this it's tailing it like it's like it's pointing at what it finds you know it'll sense a bird in a clump of a bush or whatever and it'll point and the point of this whole thing is we as hunters we train the dogs because they have a superior sense their smell and their sense is a lot like 2,000 times what ours is so they can sense something in the bush that we can't and so what we do is we honor the point even though we can't see it ourselves so part of the myth the best things about leadership and every great leader does this is they build a team of people that they can trust and respect and that's why your job as followers in a setting unless you're the leader of the church is to get to the place where you get into that position not like I was saying my this is not with ulterior motives with no strings attached but through serving to where your leadership can trust you and when you are on point and you know God is going this direction and you point there they go because the time because of relationship because of them honoring and respecting my leadership over the years I then in turn give them the authority to make that decision and go after that and you'll find that like God will open up so many doors in worship will become so much stronger and better because of that does that make sense honor the point okay um let's jump into this we're splitting and let's get into because of time we have 16 minutes let's let's start talking about the songs and the spontaneous because I think it's really important because everyone is attracted especially young worship leaders are attracted to passion and as sometimes passion can be mistaken for God when it's just passion so I'll say it again young people are naturally attracted to passion and a lot of times older people aren't as attracted to passion if you notice this they're more packed they're more attracted to act to to like what's going on behind that like I want something that's tangible that's real that's lasting I I'm tired I don't care about all the your zeal ba ba ba you know I'm saying I care about are you rooted in God right do you see the thing but you we need both we need to live in the tension of both you know they say they say never trust the trust never trust a young leader that's not passion overzealous and never trust an old leader that's not rooted and grounded so we need that we need them we need to realize that not all passion is God worship leaders we need to posture ourselves like pastors and prophets we have that responsibility whether you wanted it or not you're not just that they're singing songs you're not up you're not just up there up there wearing skinny jeans and sounding cool cool as cool as long as cool is cool but excellence will last a lifetime excellence will last forever God builds quality not quantity and God he respects cool but he doesn't care about the coming and going of fads as much as we do look for a connection in the room when you're leading worship and true joy my dad has a story about um leading in Weaverville and he led worship and it was a flop it was back in the small church days where you led and you did the worship and the speaking you don't I mean and set up and tear down and you have to talk to everyone there's no green room to hide in you know those days so he's leading worship nd just nothing just like dead you know and um that's that's Institute makes you insecure as a leader you know am i doing something wrong so then he gets up to speak and it was just dead and he went home and laid in his bed he's like oh and then that night he went to like a church function he walks in the room like he says just like alive it's like electric the same people the exact same people ever at church that's that morning we're at this function and they were just hugging each other alive and there's music and just like incredible and he thought to himself where in the world were you today this morning where were you this is not the same group of people and God showed them something real quick that there has to be connection with each other if we're going to truly enter into worship to God in a community setting and worship the God there's got to be a connection there has to be a an interaction and a connection so I come up to Josh and I give him a hug and I'm just chatting with and I'm connecting in all of the room there's just thing that happens and you know us my dad that's out when he's introduced as a meeting is it all right introduces and we're about to worship but before that why don't you go shake hands of someone next you give someone a hug baba what he's doing there is when that interaction in that we cannot worship unless there's a true love at its source and of its base and their foundation is love for God and in turn love for another otherwise it's just a noisy gong and a clanging cymbal and how many you know what I'm talking about in a worship set and you're like this is nothing but a noisy gong and a clanging cymbal Dom Potter says if it's not anointed it better sound good because you know exactly what I'm talking about what it doesn't sound good and it's just crap it's the worst write it he says worship comes in waves and that's how it is it comes in waves it's really annoyed and then you're like to get what's going on to say loewen's what's going on what's happening next and in those sailor moments when it's coming down have your act together tell your guys focus just play the chords we got it we got us we got to wait till another wave you know what I mean it's like the ocean make every week over worship a time to celebrate God let's say that again make every week of worship a time to celebrate God one of the temptations of us naturally probably more melancholy more introverted artists or you know feelers right we feel we feel is that we naturally want to be able to figure out a way for our feelings to come out in our songs right okay in a congregational setting or 70% of the room is not necessarily those type of people we have to make sure we remember that our corporate worship times there should always be the heart behind it make every week a worship time to celebrate God that is never a wrong answer ever Jeremy said it in this first session when we talk about how awesome God is and how great God is it is never wrong it is never a bad idea reminding people reminding ourselves of who God is we literally sing ourselves into freedom when we do that or prophesying before the fact if in the power of the Holy Spirit we can help usher people into a fresh fresh if in the parallel Holy Spirit we can help usher people into a fresh a fresh revelation of Jesus during our worship times a response will take care of itself we will not be able to stand in the way of a room of passionate dancing shouting bowing adoring lovers of God and you know what I'm talking about when you're in a worship set and there's such deep revelation but it hits you it might be the same songs but it hits you different and out of that revelation that real worship comes do you know I'm talking about that's what we look for when we're leading we're looking for the songs we're looking for those moments where we're impacting the heart of the person in the back we're impacting the person that could barely get to church because they got three screaming kids in their car and one of them peed their pants and the moms trying to figure out do I just whatever and bring him into church I don't know my kids got freaking lice one of my kids one of my kids got a cold and has got snot someone a wife it's not away so I can get him into daycare I'm talking about those people I'm talking about the guy in the back that comes that that has a you know problems he's been married three times and and he's trying to god out again I'm talking about those people those are the people that make up the body of Christ if those people can come into a worship set and get a fresh revelation of Jesus during our worship times we will not need to cheerlead worship lead anymore we are not just leading songs for a message creating freedom in your church community or meetings the spontaneous prophetic song is the norm so that again we need to learn to create freedom in our church communities and churches in our meetings so that the spontaneous song in between the songs is the norm and an on run out at a time and I haven't touched on a lot of the spontaneous song versus songs in this in this in this setting but we can do a lot of that tune in the QA I will probably won't get to commune a today but we're going to do some panels so if if that if that's burning on you and I don't cover today just please ask those questions because we love talking about that and then I know some of our other guys are going to be talking on that too but I'll try to touch them a little bit before we end we got 10 minutes left so creating freedom in your church community how do you do that practically speaking um baby steps now every everywhere scooter is like that comes here that leads in a more of an evangelical type setting where and we in the fie honest with you Jen and I when we travel now we hardly ever go into like River churches anymore where they're like you have three and a half hours of worship and if you don't do three and half hours of worship something wrong with you but we don't do those churches anymore we're doing the 17-minute sets we're doing the whatever so we're getting our where we're learning real quick that how do you have a powerful 17 minute worship set that is a reality I don't care if you can fight against it all day long as a worship leader but that is a reality and sometimes we'll never change and there's nothing wrong with that it's not better or worse we got us thinking about we got a quick going length of a song or length of a set equals more anointed and more of God in the higher superior calling it is absolutely a made-up thing that we've made up do you realize that it was never about that it's about quality what are you going to do with 17 minutes we've been leading at Lakewood a lot lately we've done two two weekends for him in the last six months and you know because of the way that they broadcast and they stream everything everything has to be really tight and I respect that it's a it's a tight ship it has to be that way because he's a killing two millions of people on on internet and just there's so many details that we don't know about behind the scenes are like you know I just I just told over time I just need somebody to tell me exactly what to do because you do the minute and thirty seconds of this song they come out introduced and right when they're walking off you hit where you left off and you do this amount of time of worship and then you end this and you step off the stage and you stand your X spot and you stand there and then they come out and they do their prayer time and then I walked out with my acoustic this you know and I do my five minute song and I'm watching the pastor and walking when he walks off the stage as soon as he hits this part in the thing we click into that the last song and we end and we in and then I walked upstage and we wait and she comes up and does an eight minute offering thing and then we come out and we do a special song that's this amount of time and then we're done and a lot of you go I hate that well I'm sorry for you you probably never be invited into those settings and I don't mean that with arrogance I really don't what I mean is that what I mean is is we have to honor and respect some of the things that we don't like understand if we want to be able to affect and help and so what I've noticed in that setting you know Jan's doing that song no longer slaves and Joel Osteen is just like and I'm not I'm not just hearing me please I'm not like name I'm not I'm not name dropping for the sake of name dropping I'm using the names in the plot in this this story to really kick to over-communicate when I'm trying to the heart of an apprentice says they would have never been singing no longer slaves which i think is a song that's for this generation if we didn't honor that structure I have no problem with them tell me you got five minutes here you got ten minutes here get fifteen because I know that God is so much bigger than a time frame and you see these it's packed these powerful moments of worship maybe they're ten minutes long and that's what you're looking for and you're looking for these songs if you've got a length of time that you feel is is is small in your were splitter squeeze every ounce out of it you can fill it with songs you know like I love the 10,000 reason songs that verse that third verse gets me every time to me like I could sing the third verse of 10,000 reasons for 45 minutes and be happy and on that day when my strength is failing the end draws near my time has come steal my soul sing your praise unending 10,000 years and forevermore it's so packed with theology is so packed with truth songs if you need a song to Brit for worship to break out sing a song let's pack the theology and truth in Christ alone I love that song cornerstone oh my gosh I love freakin love that song and you know what it works it just works it works when you do it for two minutes and it works when you do it for 20 minutes fill your sets with those songs if you got a short amount of time a good vacation is the right blend of preparation and spontaneity same with the worship set I usually have about 10 songs and I worship set so I'm planning I don't know exactly and I make a set list like if I song Seles and something extras you know I mean he put the sheet down on your floor on your thing here's my set list but it would be bad of me if no matter what happened I would stick to that exact set list every time right let's say I get to the third song and gods like already moved past the fourth one into the fifth one and you could feel it you know I mean and I go nope my setlist but I feel it would be just as bad to not prepare and just expect some magical thing you know what I'm saying so it's like going on a vacation when we went on our honeymoon we had the places that we were staying at night and we had some gift cards it's pretty much it and then during the day we just kind of did whatever we wanted to the right amount of preparation in the right amount of spontaneity is crucial to and I'm going to talk about it later in the school being a bridge and it's my it's my most passionate subject right now about being a bridge and how in the world to get well god it deposited into you to be as far-reaching as he wants it to be around the world we've got to learn how to become a bridge and I'll talk about that later we got to respect both the spontaneous and the rehearse song there's a word in the Psalms that's you is called the Mick 'tom song and it's the definition is it's a song be kept in remembrance so even in the Bible there were songs there was a lyric that was said that was supposed to be rehearsed and recited over all the following generations like the song amazing grace that song is never going to go away and it's not supposed to if something in the actual song that's a mikta Masson so there's nothing wrong with the song itself but there's also nothing wrong with the spontaneous it's the marriage of the both together that makes for a powerful set songs of their want run way into the prophetic they're that they set they set that moment just because the song has already been written doesn't mean it's not prophetic but Morningstar had a story back in the day I've got two minutes I'll get I'm almost there um how worship was going on a Richter hunter just felt like it's we haven't hit it yet there's one more song and they did another song and it wasn't it he's like all right just do another one there's an element of that risk you know because he's looking for that one song I never and the lennard-jones got up and saying this I want to hold your hand by the Beatles and as soon as he in it it's like the cloud of glory just filled that place that song in that moment was the prophetic word of the Lord but it was already written so it was still prophetic right but it was already written so there's those Rhema words of this moment but then there's sometimes you pullin already written songs so learning the difference between the two is really important and sometimes it's just a line you know in between a song like God what she just saying like they say it today a few lines that weren't that weren't written you know let's say you sing I remember I remember the moment when I sang his love never fails it never gives up it never runs out on me it was during a baptism when people were getting free and people kept coming up it was a baptism as chaos and he was a holy chaos and just taking a moment I talked about in song running one of our biggest things in song is just to stop and feel if we can engage in her we could put our feelers out we could start to feel and we right out of that it's really important I was feeling that night and I just member seeing his love never fails it never gives up it never runs out on me that was a Rhema word prophetic song spontaneous song in the moment then later became an actual song so those you songwriters pay attention to those moments a lot of times those spontaneous songs will turn into songs they're supposed to be sung you know around the world and I just I'm passionate about that I think it's really important that we honor both all right why don't we do this just because it's time my time is up um gosh I could talk about this all day why don't let's just do this let's just end this and then when I when we do the panel we can do more of the prophetic song there know a lot of our other people are gonna be talking about prophetic song a lot of you're here right because of that right the spontaneous the prophetic and how to be activated in that and whatnot and I think I'm I think will more than hit that subject throughout the school so all right thank you afternoon people I know it's turn over all right
