that's older than jesus hi everyone i'm daniel hi everyone i'm yuka so tonight we are going to do a reaction video the video that we're going to react to is called history of japan i know what you're thinking this probably sounds really boring but this video is pretty funny so let's get started japan is an island by the sea filled with volcanoes in the year negative a billion japan might not have been here in the year negative forty thousand it was here and you could walk to it and some people walked to it then it got warmer some icebergs melted it became an island and now there's lots of trees because it's warmer so now there's people on the island they're basically sort of hanging out in between the mountains eating nuts off trees and using the latest technology like stones and bowls ding dong it's the outside world and they have technology from the future like really good metal and crazy rice farms now you can make a lot of rice really really quickly that means if you own the farm you own a lot of food which is something everybody needs to survive so that makes you king rice farming and rice kingdom spread across the land all the way to here hi everyone i'm pandey sensei rice farming in japan began in the german period japan has been growing rice for over 3000 years rice has become a major part of japanese food culture and japan has become world famous for producing high quality rice some popular types include koshihitari from niigata prefecture akita komachi from akita prefecture and hino hikari from kumamoto just to name a few the most important kingdoms were here here here here here here and here but this one was the most most important ruled by a heavenly superperson or emperor for short knock knock get the door it's religion the new prince wants everyone to try this hot new religion from please try this religion he said no said everybody try it no said everybody again quieter this time prince charter could spread buddhism in order to build a centralized nation and govern the nation in peace he spread buddhism to bureaucrats and gentry as a common perception and morality govern the nation and so the religion was put into place and all the rules that came with it then the government was taken over by another clique and they made some reforms like making the government govern more and making the government more like china's government which is a government that governs more hi china they said hi said china can you call us something else other than said japan like what said china how about sunrises and they stole china's alphabet and wrote a book about themselves and then they made lots of poetry and art and another book about themselves then they stopped moving the capitol every time the emperor died and kept it in one place for a while right here today the capital of japan is tokyo but it used to be different until 1784 heisuku in nara was the capital but for the next 10 years nadal and in 1794 hey and kyo in kyoto became the capital of japan hey and kill was the capital of japan for 1075 years from 794 to 1869 after that the capital of japan moved from kyoto to edo so actually tokyo has only been the capital of japan for 151 years kyoto was the capital of japan for the longest period in japanese history for that reason people who want to experience the traditional history of ancient japan are recommended to spend time in kyoto pop at the north finally get that squared away a rich hipster named kukai is bored with modern buddhism visits china and learns a better version which is more cheap comes back reinvents the alphabet and causes art and literature to be created for a long time is one of the sacred sites of japanese buddhism that was opened by kobo dashi kukai more than 1200 years ago kukai introduced shingo essential buddhism in the early heian period then kukai opened the shinguan sect with the teaching of shingo esoteric buddhism on mount koya and built kongobuji koyasan the head temple of the shingon sec was founded by kukan in their okinawan there is a mazarian where cuckoo was settled to meditate and become the reincarnation of buddha it is said the kukai is still alive in mount korea and meals are still brought to of no end twice daily this ritual is called xiojinglu also there is a deep relationship between 88 places in shikoku and kobo there's a heritage trail pilgrimage that follows the loot cobra that she took during her separate pilgrimage to these 88 places called shikoku hatiji hack fashion mercury and the royal palace turned into such a dream world art that they really didn't give a about running the country so if you live outside the palace how are you supposed to protect your from criminals i think what's funny so far from this video is like the color on the text and also like the musical things like highly samurai it's like so quirky that it just kind of works like with with the humor but it's not very complicated right i'll explain a little bit more about samurai the origin of the word samurai means servant of the people therefore a samurai who is involved in the military and does not have a specific master no matter how good he is in martial arts is called a running only samurai are around two rider horses important people hired samurai poor people who could not afford to hire samurai did not hire samurai the samurai became organized and powerful more powerful than the government so they made their own military government here they let the emperor still be emperor but the shogun is actually in control breaking news the mongols have invaded china we've invaded china please respect us or else we might invade you as well okay said japan so the mongols came over ready for war and died but they tried again and had a nice time fighting with the japanese but then died in a tornado the mongol empire at the time was incredibly strong they controlled from turkey in the west to the korean peninsula in the east and to myanma in the south in fact the mongol empire governed about 25 of the land on earth at the time japan was stockpiling the lot of gold from all of their rich natural resources however because japan was far away from the continent very few foreign merchants came kubra khan the fifth emperor of the mongol empire heard the rumor of japan's rich reduces and moved in to take the gold by force luckily japan was not invaded by mongol empire of two massive typhoon which sank the mongol ships and the emperor overthrows the shogunate then the shogunate overthrows him back and moves to kyoto and makes a new shogunate and the emperor can still dress like an effort if he wants that's [Music] colors collaborative fine plays monkey fun tea parties gardening architecture flowers it's time for who's going to be the next shogun usually it's the shogun's kid but the shogun doesn't have a kid so he tries to get his brother to quit being a monk and be the next shogun he says okay but then the shogun has a kid so now who's it gonna be but now on your phones and everyone voted so hard that the palace caught on fire and burned down the shogun actually didn't care he was off somewhere doing poetry and the whole country broke into pieces everyone is fighting with each other for local power and it's anybody's game the tendency to win power by fourth breath and the saint goku warlords were born in many places the trigger was the loss of authority of the muromachi shogunate due to the owning war the lords who had avoided the conflict until then began to fight embarrassed crisis to expand their land aiming to become the lord of the entire country it's europe no they're not here to take over they just want a celestial ship like clocks and guns so that's cool but everyone's still fighting each other for control now with guns and wouldn't it be nice to control the capital which right now is puppets with no one controlling them this clan is ready to make a run for it but first they have to trample this smaller clan which is in the way surprise the smaller clan wins and the leader of that clan steals the idea of invading the capital and invades the capital and it goes very well he's about halfway through conquering japan when someone who works for him kills him and then someone else who works for him kills them and that guy finishes conquering japan and then he confiscated everybody's swords and made some rules and now i'm going to invade korea and then hopefully china he said and failed and also died but before he died he told these five guys to take care of his five-year-old son until he's old enough to be the next ruler of japan and the five guys said yeah right it's not gonna be this kid it's gonna be one of us because we're grown-ups and it's probably gonna be this guy who happens to be way more rich and powerful than the others who is it trump i don't know why trump is just gay man support him but a lot of people support not supporting him they have a fight and he wins and starts a new government right here and he still lets the emperor dress like an emperor and have very nice things but don't get confused this is the new government and they are very strict so strict they close the country no one can leave and no one can come in no one can leave generally the period from the ban on portuguese ships in 1639 to the conclusion of the convention of kanagawa in 1854 is called sakura which means isolation isolation this period of sakaku lasted over 200 years there are two reasons why japan adopted the policy of isolation one was the removal of portuguese and spanish traders from japan next was a ban on christianity the shogunate disliked the ambition of these two countries for expanding their territory while practicing a banned religion and carried out a thorough removal of foreigners during the isolation period netherlands and china were allowed to continue trading the trading ports were limited to matsumura satma and tsushima as well as dejima in nagasaki if they want to buy and sell but they have to do it right here now that the entire country was not a war with itself the population increased a lot business increased schools were built roads were built everyone learned to read books were published there's poetry plays sexy times puppet shows and dutch studies people started to study european science from books they bought from the dutch were talking geography skeletons physics chemistry astronomy and maybe even electricity over time the economic and cultural prosperity began to gradually slow down knock knock it's the united states united states gay america came with guns open the country stop having it be closed said the united states there's really nothing they could do so they signed a contract that lets the united states britain and russia visit japan any time they want satsuma hated this that sucks they said this sucks it was almost yes my my hometown is the meiji restoration refers to the flow of modernization in japan such as the end of the samurai era which lasted 700 years from the kamakura period and the revival of politics by the emperor the modern era of japan began with the meiji restoration and japan rushed to become a world power they made a new government which was a lot more western they made a new constitution that was pretty western and a military that was pretty western do you know what else is western that's right it's conquering stuff so what can we conquer korea they conquer korea taking it from its previous owner china and then go a little bit further and russia rushes in out of nowhere and says stop no you can't take that we were going to build a railroad through here to try to get some more water and russia builds their railroad supervised by a shit-ton of soldiers and then when the railroad was done they downgraded to a ton did i say downgraded an upgrade and japan says can you maybe chill and russia says how about maybe you chill japan is kind of scared of russia you'll never guess who's also kind of scared of russia great britain so japan and great britain make an alliance together so they can be a little less scared of russia feeling confident japan goes to war against russia just for a moment and then they both get tired and stop it's time the world is about to have a war because it's the 1900s and weapons are getting crazy and all these empires are excited to try them out on each other meanwhile japan has been enjoying conquering stuff and wants more and the next thing on the list is this part of china and lots of tiny islands all that stuff belongs to germany which just had war declared by britain because britain was friends with belgium which was being trespassed by germany in order to get the brands to kick france's ass because france is friends with russia who was getting ready to kick austria's ass because austria was getting ready to kick serbia's ass because someone from serbia shot the leader of austria's ass or actually shot him in the head and britain is currently friends with japan so you know what that means the japan should take the islands which they wanted to do anyway so they called britain on the telly to sort of let them know and then they did it and they also helped britain a little here and there with some errands and stuff now the war is over and congratulations japan you technically fought in the war which means you get to sit at the negotiating table with the big dudes where they decided who owns what and yes japan gets to keep all that they stole from germany you also get to join the post-war mega alliance whose mission statement is to try not to take over the world the great depression is bad japan's economy is now crappy but the military is doing just fine and it debates manchuria in the league of nations it's like no don't do that if you're in the league of nations you're not supposed to take our world [Music] i think what i'd like is how it just has all these little kind of jingles so it's like how about i do it anyway right more of china and is planning to invade the entire east you've got mail it's from germany the new leader of germany he has a cool mustache and he's trying to take over the world and needs friends this also got forwarded to italy they all decided to be friends because they had so much in common it's time for world war ii germany is invading the neighbors then they invade the neighbors neighbors then the neighbors neighbors neighbors who happened to be britain said holy and the united states started healthy britain because they are good friends i started not helping japan because their friends and our the united states is also working on a large very huge bomb bigger than any other bomb ever just in case but they still haven't joined the war war looks bad on tv and the united states is really starting to care about their image but then japan spits on them in hawaii and challenges them to war and they say yes and then germany as a symbol of friendship declares war in the united states also so the united states goes to war in europe and they help the gang chase germany back into germany and they also start chasing japan back into japan and they haven't used the bomb yet and are curious to see if it works so they drop it on japan they shoot up too [Music] the atom bomb was dropped in hiroshima first and the next nagasaki three days later we went to the hiroshima genbaku dome in kagoshima which is my hometown there is also agua museum in chilean so chiang was the place for the tokko tai which is kamakaze pilot live from shira so i went to that museum as well it was pretty cool actually because it had the kamikaze plane but we didn't actually go all the way into the mountains we just walked a lot of people coming from obviously to see the place the chiron is very famous there are a lot of letters from the those kamikaze kids they were still very very young because at the time that that was close to the end of the war the government used a lot of teenagers they're still 17 19 but they were believing that they're going to survive so no they're going to win the war so they know that they're going to die but they need to you know sacrifice because they cannot say that i don't want to go right because that's a families pride yeah and everyone is brainwashed by the government that we're gonna win that's what we have to get together as everyone knows japan kind of lost world war ii and many people were sacrificed during the war not only japanese but also many other citizens from every country around the world so when i moved to papua new guinea my image of png was battlefield of world war ii so japanese australian-american english new zealander dutch and png people are also sacrificed by this world war ii it's been about 75 years since world war ii ended and when we visited rebel in papua new guinea last year we both kind of experienced quite a lot of things that we couldn't even imagine what life was like during the war time yeah we went to the hospital like a japanese hospital chinese it wasn't even really a hospital it was like a whole it was like a secret tunnel that the japanese had dug out into into a mountain and it was like very dark and low and they just dug straight into the cliff into the rock and they had an operating theater a small kitchen with just all the smoke and everything and we can still find a lot of little jar for the medicine which they've been used when you think about how much time they had to spend in this cramped dark little tunnel kind of hiding from the british and the australian and new zealand soldiers then it would have been a pretty difficult and stressful time for the japanese soldiers there was no civilization or any roads or anything so there was just a really thick jungle it would have been hot it would have been sweaty it was so hot and just a jungle so we saw like harbor where all the boats and submarines would come in because it was like close to the cliff that we climbed up there was like a very deep harbor that the submarines and u-boats would come into or else we went to the museum as well and there was like a observation who was the japanese general yamamoto is a very famous japanese wartime general during world war ii but the general office called yamamoto so we went down underground into the spurred cabin that had been dug out underground but there's no window there's no windows no air very still very hot yeah well i saw this on documentary about the world war ii from japanese side and they said that the the yamamoto is the japanese side is gonna lose this award because if america isn't here or like the american side is here japan is not they don't have any technology and but he went to egypt america and he also they saw that how technology is way way more advanced but he he couldn't say that because all the atmosphere of japanese japan was totally up for the war after world war one they became patriotic yeah confident arrogant and confident as bart simpson would say war is held man look at it look at this what did you say war is hell man i had a t-shirt with that exact picture when i was a kid or as hell man i seriously did that sort of learning about history of war i think is quite important for the younger generation now because if they don't understand the mistakes that were made in the past then those mistakes will be repeated in the future and as long as we can learn from those mistakes that were made then hopefully the future generation is hope and then we won't have to experience a world war right because i'm japanese then i was kiwi now we're married it's now a different time isn't it we must never forget the soldiers that have fallen like i think the beauty of war is that you're serving your country right so that's sort of a phrase that gets repeated regularly when you're talking about war is that it's a very noble sacrifice that you're putting the country before yourself right so you're prepared to sacrifice yourself so that other people can survive and benefit from the peace that you're fighting for which sounds a little bit ironic that you're fighting for peace but if the ultimate goal is peace then the powerful forces who are wanting global peace kind of need the wind to beat the forces who and the armies who want chaos and destruction united states installed a new government inspired by the united states government with just the right ingredients for a post-more economic miracle and japan starts making tvs vcrs automobiles and camcorders as fast as they can and also better than everybody else they get rich and the economy goes wild another miracle wears off but everything's still pretty cool i guess huh goodbye okay so that's sort of only going up to the 1990s right i kind of like to see a sequel like if that's only up to 1990 then there's quite a lot that's happened in japan's history in the last 30 years so that's sort of 1990 30 years is a really long time history of a country right so a lot of stuff has happened in japan over the last 30 years 1986 to 1991 so 1990 was that most of japan was their good time for the economy japan was kind of on top of the world they were crushing it with like technology and cars and everything they were becoming a superpower but then everything kind of collapsed when the bubble popped in 1992 and then heisei era was sort of tarnished with this negativity from 1992 until the empress stood down in 2019 and it became the railway era so during that time there was a lot of low population growth japan started to get a lot more social issues i feel like that japanese economy became mature like the same as europe now as japanese industry is going down but what is the future how how are they stimulating the technological growth of japan toyota's building that big electric city close to mount fuji but the point of the economic growth is the population right and then a lot of japanese people doesn't have kids anymore or like yes society is changing the industry is also changing companies that was top of the world are now we don't know you know because a other country like korea or like other asian countries is getting more powerful and but you know it's not a competition right it's not a competition but i think my point what i was trying to get at was with every new emperor there's a new era so the heisei era had a lot of negativity so that's why when there was a big secret about what's what's the the new emperor's era going to be called then it was announced as rawa which is sort of hopeful and okay this this is yeah this is the time that we're going to make japan great again in heisei era i think a japanese government japanese company they were struggling a lot and a lot of technology was changing you know i t bubble 2000 wasn't it it was like a japanese economy frozen change but it was it built up and then it crashed and then it sort of got stuck and they weren't trying to like the tech industries so much maybe that was because the rest of the world was becoming very globalized right and opening up their borders and freedom of travel and the ability to work remotely started to take off while japan was very conservative because they used to have a lot of population they don't have to connect with other countries so they didn't see the any benefit to be a walk like a grovel so when the new emperor took the throne in 2019 then his new era was called the raiwa era so my understanding is that the raiwa era is supposed to symbolize growth and fortune and harmony and peace so that was sort of supposed to motivate the japanese population to that to change their mindset and have hope for the future the government and emperor is not really connecting in japan but it's kind of like the uk right the queen is a figurehead the emperor is also a figurehead yeah it's just like all of the government decisions that control the country are done by the prime minister everyone likes the empire and that the history of japan so everyone is hoping that railway era can be your new different era for japanese more light future ahead so what what did you think of the video do you think you learned much about japanese history it's just so simplified but it's funny and it has a lot of kind of internet memes and things like that in it a little bit dark internet humor yeah yeah but it sort of makes a very dry topic a lot more fun and interesting yeah but there was a bass drum kind of reality isn't it wasn't it but i don't remember history at school ever being caught like that it was very dry and very boring and just big thick textbooks and yeah it wasn't very exciting imagine if they taught japanese history like that in at japanese schools it's quite shallow but it's it might be easy to understand for someone who doesn't know anything about the japanese history where i think that this video has done really well is and giving people a broad very simplified snapshot of japan's history which is a good foundation if you want to learn more about any particular topic then well there's the internet you can do that kind of research or there's even a lot of media being released now like film and even video games which like one particular game that's come out very recently this year is called ghosts of sushima so what i've been playing that a little bit and it's a really really beautiful game and its main drawcard is that it actually focuses on this very unique period of time in japan's history when the mongols were invading japan so the whole game is set within this time period everything i know about japan must be from anime kurosawa movies and video games that brings us to the end of another video hope you learned something new please leave a comment down below in the comment section and don't forget to smash the like button click the
