Is It Offensive to Quote Churchill? | Good Morning Britain

we are reassessing our greatest war heroes legacy joining us now broadcaster James Whale who says Churchill should be celebrated as a great leader but Professor Kehinde Andrews says people put Churchill on a pedestal but history shows he's a racist now why why I mean the historical record here is clear even Boris Johnson admits that he was a racist he was someone who believed that the white race was superior the natives didn't have any right to their lands in the Americas the Indians were a ghastly people and just was a generally imperialist racist way that we can say because those were the views of their time and the fact that he actually achieved something which saved defended protected our nation means that we can separate those things out that's the jimmy savile defense it was just a bit different back in the day it's a likening Sir Winston Churchill Jamie Savile well this week a better comparison at the time Leo Amery the Secretary of India not anti-racist actually said that Churchill's views were so extreme on India he couldn't separate them from Hitler's and the truth is Hitler was a great military leader a product of his time and if they won the war we'd be able to discuss your next luckily we can separate Sir Winston Churchill from Hitler because they went up against each other in the war because one lost the fact of the matter is that Churchill's views were so repugnant and they actually led to 3 million people starving to death in Bengal because he was more interested in stockpiling rations for the war than saving starving Indians but he didn't believe they really don't matter to you one scintilla Sir Winston Churchill almost single-handedly rallied this country into winning world war two against the Nazis and a dolphin but that's also not true and equally true in India it's true one man did not win the war people in India people in the Caribbean people in Africa also contribute to the war you don't the idea that your hatred of Winston Churchill it's positive you cannot even give him credit for rallying the mood of this country when everyone thought the war was done question is your view of Britishness oh my Opik that you can't understand the people in India Africa and Caribbean count just as much as people here and for people there if people whose family starve to death because Churchill couldn't be bothered to say Gretchen's of course Churchill's are here I look they're there there is no doubt than in different times we could say all those Americans who go on about how Great America is you get them out of there because they nicked it off the the indigenous population and that is part of history and maybe we should say the same about the Italians coming here in Roman times look if it hadn't been for Winston Churchill and hey we all have flaws I think we probably would not have had the the stomach to take on Hitler so he rallied everybody in this country at a time just remember when world remember where and can I just say something quite like you and I've seen you on TV before when I was at school and this is bad when I was at school I never learned that any Asian or black soldiers fought in the Second World War I think that is terrible but back on to Churchill of course he is a British hero like Margaret Thatcher like various other people I could think of when what's-his-face came back and said there will be peace in our time thank you very much indeed everybody was about to give in to Hitler now have we done that can you aim at what we wouldn't all be why do you not think this is historic do you really think this is how history works that one person turns open to genuinely believe this is why he was recently voted the greatest ever Britain is that notwithstanding his flaws and inflammatory rhetoric and all those things none of which I think in dispute Churchill evolved as a man and he became for his time a wonderful leader for the country you lota vaiting he - morale of civilians and people on the front lines rally when it look like you need leadership and get people fired up to go into battle see who is the perfect politician what do you have any heroes Mac a mix of you can wail a lot Malcolm and that's right Malcolm X I could paint a very different picture of Malcolm X to the say the name is a racist he was in flam said many vanity things right Mandela hero or terrorist Nelson Mandela was a seller in prison and then came out and practice easy and looking at heroes looking for for the bad side and opening the maxi big effect I think the problem in this is a problem that Britain has the reality is that the history of this country is blue on racism and therefore everybody involved in it probably has a really smart guy my problems like you basically say this country was built on racism it's full of race with that position I think it's a load of old baloney when you say that well I think it's a great country right I'm not going to feel ashamed of my because you say it's just a minute otherwise I don't get sad if it's just calm down right why don't you like living in this country why don't you visit my parents my family my family were taking this slavery to the Caribbean and migrate here because they were so poor in the Caribbean successful man you've got enough money to live somewhere else do you live in this big you'd like this is the problem of church overlook this colonialism imperialism was ruined other parts of the world around going I don't hate this country but I we said we're a racist country built on racism I must remain racing if Y was man who has the means to leave the country working well where would I go because Burton's impact on the world you say you never say most of the world so you know what I go exactly Churchill is a big part of that reason why just being in the Caribbean few months ago the Antigua beautiful island right what was yeah it's a beautiful island lovely see it's got a lovely foliage but the fact of the matter we will be killed where you had slavery where you have colonialism economies that can't work for themselves yeah it's a beautiful country but he's not beautiful in any other way what could Britain do if we had to to make amends in your eyes what would you like to see Britain do to make everything right reparations was very clear like there's a difference money like I said where would I go the Brin hasn't devastating GLE part of planet Earth every single part where black people live is right so you Thunder Brazil I mean every is the most despicable country in the history of mangled despicable lay but listen is it or not another most despicable no would you rather live in America what America is more than where they were one of the most it's not about this country or that country is a better system this country country too by the way it's equally my country this is what you wanted to be your country because hey Winston Churchill you didn't rebus a nasty races you've ruined the entire planet why would you say there must be somebody in Britain you like who do you like famous person in Britain in today's petition a politician everyone just one Claudia Jones is great Claudia Jones he was Claudia John she was a Trinidadian boxes and Trinidad at least I'm with this is a slaughter of millions of if you have the means to leave I get it improve them because I know I know why don't you come on my talk radio program tonight we'll carry this disease gonna cut us off where are the reglued we're cold you don't wanna go there somewhere the candy could live where he wouldn't feel such pain it doesn't feel hey hey I do not hate we're in critical of it I think they say one good thing about this country the weather you can say whatever you like yeah what was good thing about well one good thing about Bri know at least at least we can have a debate right food yeah actually one is despite all your what Churchill bonus was the free-range great Indian and Caribbean food no way each other did not with it and B we should be more crude by time thank you very much indeed you
