Is 22lr The Best Caliber Option For Home Defense?

[Music] could this little bitty projectile and caliber truly be the best caliber choice for home defense we'll stick around we just might find out what's going on go squad trey here with ghost tactical and today we're going to have a discussion that may not be the most popular amongst gun people in the in the community but is 22lr or 22 long rifle a legitimate caliber to use for home defense so let's kind of go into it real quick and and discuss what we're talking about the 22lr is one of the longest running the most popular calibers out there that can run in handguns carbines rifles it can do it all it's a very versatile caliber and a very versatile round but a lot of people will say that it is not good for home defense because it just doesn't have the stopping power what we're going to go through are some advantages and possible disadvantages of having the 22lr as you're going to vince caliber so what we've got here is basically a ruger 10 22 barrel chassis that has a custom stock to make it look like maybe like an fnp 90 or something but it is in essence a ruger 10 22. i love this gun i got this for my daughter and i enjoy shooting the hell out of it but we're going to talk is this a valuable option and a legitimate option for home defense and a lot of people in the gun community are going to tell you no and that's okay everyone has their opinion but why do they say no is it because the 22lr is little wimpy little caliber or it may not have the stopping power and all that possibly and i'm not saying they're wrong i'm saying that they're maybe closed-minded i haven't really thought this through so if you're out there we're going to go through some of the advantages and disadvantages of the 22lr but before we do go ahead leave an answer down in the comments below is have you considered the 22lr as your home defense caliber and if so what are you running with it let's talk in generalities and let's be frank about whether this caliber in my opinion is valuable and a legitimate option for home defense my answer absolutely it is the 22lr people say well it's for older people it's for beginners it's for women or whatever someone who's weak well if it's okay for them why is it not okay for anyone so my question is this is yes it may not have the stopping power as a nine millimeter or a two two three five five six or it's a shotgun but will it get the job done absolutely now one of the great reasons and advantages of having 22lr for anyone is that the recoil is going to be very very minimal so no matter we're talking a younger person a weaker person you know an elderly person whoever is in charge of the firearm or the 22lr they should be able to handle the recoil and get multiple shots if they need to now once again one of the disadvantages is that it may not have the stopping power as some other calibers well guess what you don't have to shoot just once to end that threat and if it means you have to take two or three shots to end that threat and someone's in your house trying to cause you or your family harm you follow them to the ground until they are no longer a threat sometimes it takes two or three or four shots honestly what's easier to take two three or four shots with a 22 or 45 acp or 223 for anyone no matter what their strength level is or age 22lr is that caliber so that's the advantage of number one the second advantage is this to end a threat it's either going to be voluntary or involuntary that threat is either going to voluntarily leave because they don't want any more of what's going on or it's involuntary which means you ended the threat either way a 22lr is going to hurt now it may not be the biggest caliber in the world and it may not be the strongest but i promise you if you've ever been shot by one you know what it is and if you have it you don't want to it's going to hurt any projectile that enters the body at that speed is going to hurt it's either going to make that person make a decision either i'm going to leave or i'm in it for the long haul which means i'm getting ready to take two or three or four or five more shots and end that threat either way either voluntarily or involuntarily a 22 caliber is going to end that threat now the third advantage of the 22lr in my opinion is the audible concussion that it sends off we're talking about home defense we're not talking about maybe being outside in a truck defense or or whatever we're talking home defense inside your walls inside your house now one of the things that you have to understand is the higher and larger the caliber the louder the audible print is going to be it's going to ring your ears if you don't have ear protection honestly how many people are going to think about at two o'clock in the morning if they hear someone entering their house that they don't believe should be there are going to think about the first thing is putting ear protection in and going to search that because here's the thing it's dark you're not going to have your eyesight very much so what are you going to need you're going to need to hear better if you don't have electronic ear protection throwing something in your ears may not be the greatest thing if you're going to go looking for a threat now here's the thing with 22lr i'm not going to say that it's hollywood silent i'm not saying that i'm saying the 22lr is manageable when it comes to protecting your ears and that the audible noise that it projects out of a firearm whether it's a handgun carbine rifle a 22lr is not going to cause the damage to your ears or anyone else that you love inside this house as much as handgun higher handgun calibers or especially rifle or shotgun calibers so the audible imprint that a 22lr is not going to cause as much damage but it is loud enough for that threat to hear it and go that sounds like a gun once again involuntary or voluntary they're going to have to make that decision right then and there sometimes the sound of any gun is going to get them outside the house which is what you want you don't always have to end that threat by you know lethal force if they leave your house the threats ended which is all you're really wanting is to protect your family in your home so the 22lr the audible imprint that it's going to leave out of the firearm is going to let the true intruder know that um some guys mean business over here and two it's not going to hurt you or your loved one's ears enough to where the damage that could be caused from other calibers now we have talked a lot about the advantages but what are some of the disadvantages of the 22lr well we're talking stopping power and that's going to be the major argument from people that are gun people inside the community saying it's just not strong enough and in one shot it very well could be if you've got someone that's 6 4 350 pounds one shot from a 22lr may not end that threat once again hopefully you have more than one round that you can shoot if you you know if you're going to worry about that then you might want to go to you know a handgun caliber you might want to go to a rifle or a shotgun something like that that's going to give you some more stopping power that's okay we're not saying you have to use a 22lr we're discussing is it a viable option now the main disadvantage that people will discuss about the 22lr that i tend to agree with is the reliability of the ammo now 22lr is cheap which is a great advantage because you can buy a lot of it get some good work at the range with it and it's not going to cost an arm or leg but here's the issue with that 22lr ammo is historically dirty and unreliable the cheaper the ammo you get for 22lr the more problems that you probably are going to have with cycling and failures that being said if you're going to use 22lr as a home defense go ahead and get some match grade some higher grade more expensive 22lr ammo because it's probably not going to have as many problems as the very cheap dirty you know brick stuff that you can buy for you know nothing at walmart or whatever go ahead and buy some match grade 22lr or some more expensive maybe home defense 22lr ammo that's probably going to cycle better it'd be more reliable when that [ __ ] hits the fan you gotta have a reliable ammo so we've sit here and talked about the advantages and the disadvantages and some specs of the 22lr and it comes right down to answering the question is 22lr in fact a viable option and possibly the best option for home defense i'm not going to go as far as saying it's the best option but i think it's definitely up there it's a great option for home defense and anyone that tries to tell you not to get a 22lr handgun rifle or carbine for home defense and they try to shame you into getting something bigger shame on them and shame on you if you listen to them you don't have to go buy something that you don't want if a 22lr is what you can afford it is what you want and anyone in the house can shoot it and have fun with it and be able to protect yourself then by god don't let anyone tell you that you're wrong people out there that shame the 22lr for home defense just don't know they probably ever haven't been shot by one to let them know that oh maybe this does have some stopping power that [ __ ] hurts so i will say this i will not say that it
