hey guys this is turn at john's furniture repair i've got this coffee table in and i forgot to take a video when i had it completely broken and apart but what we had going on here is this leg was broken in four places so there was a chunk broken here here down here and down there and also it had come apart from the center now a couple things about this table are yes it's big and gorgeous and huge but when you look at the design a lot of the pressure goes on these joints right here this is secure this is not and it doesn't get a whole lot of support because the center of this is not actually attached to the table so there's quite a bit of movement for a table this heavy and large this post here should be brought down uh to a board here with a big dowel or just a round peg and put in here so that it stabilizes everything around it but uh aside from that these this customer had bought this table brand new and when it broke on them they realized it had been repaired before and so we have at this point epoxied everything so it's solid but i never end it there because uh just a flat joint with epoxy is probably just not going to hold up again so what we're going to be doing is putting a dowel through and i do this on all my repairs like this first i get it lined up glue it and then i actually dowel joint every break just to give it an extra bit of security so we're going to be drilling through each point and putting a dowel up here up here and up here and making sure that that's good and tight and then we'll get on to the touch ups so i just wanted to share that with you guys if you ever have a repair like that you want to make sure you get your your dowel far enough on each side of the brake and you can just you know choose whatever size dowel works for your job you drill it in pop your dowel in through that joint with some glue let it sit and then get to your touch-ups that'll make sure that your repair is completely solid and it won't happen again [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] okay so now that i've trimmed all those off i'm just going to use some epoxy putty to fill up the voids around the holes which there will always be when you're cutting on an angle and also the epoxy putty is just easier to touch up than the ends end grained of dowels they always look too dark so i can sand this smooth and kind of match it to the rest of the wood around it a lot easier but it'll be a lot stronger now we've got posts going right through every broken point and just press it in there i'm gonna leave a little bit of extra on just so i get the profile of the curve when i sand it okay so i've got everything sanded to 120 now you can see all the brake lines there a little better and where our dowels come through so i'm going to do a secondary putty job with some water-based putty and that's just going to take care of all of the minor stuff brad nail holes little voids in the glue up joint just working to get this surface nice and smooth before we do any color work there's three elements when you're doing touch-up work that need to be on par one is your surface needs to be level with the surrounding two is your color needs to match and three is your sheen of your finish needs to match so a lot of the work goes into leveling a finish or a surface a lot of times you know you've got major repairs that um you've had a lot of putty work done too or there's a lot of breaks and you got to do a lot of work sometimes it takes a few rounds of working and looking and seeing what needs what before you get it all down to a level so i'll make sure that's all puttied properly and then we'll give it a stand with 180 and uh get on to color work okay so this is dried overnight i'm just gonna stand it with one eating [Music] [Music] okay so i've got it all cleaned up here ready for some stain so i'm gonna use um they don't make this anymore actually but it's very things gel stain and i find it really good for these really caramely looks and i don't want the stain to soak in a whole bunch i want it to be on the lighter side if anything and i know right off the bat these are not going to stain up these are not going to stain up so there'll be lots of touch ups but this is going to be our base color so i'm just going to start applying this it'd be pretty easy to miss a spot on this leg which is why at the end of this i'm going to have to turn it over on the floor and take a look at what it looks like which i'll have to get someone to help me with that because this is a ginormous table okay so you can see the base color matches pretty good it's a little light so that's exactly what i wanted make sure i've got it all wiped off clean here so now i'm going to use um to uh just some colors to get this in line so let me go grab that okay so i'm just gonna use markers i'm gonna use this marker which is a golden oak mohawk marker for the background color try to kind of follow the swirly grain this section has i'll do the same up here okay then i'm going to use a grading pen and i'm going to use a honey and i'm just going to try to follow these lines that the chair already has coming through or sorry that the leg already has coming through and then also get some of these other little touch-ups while i'm here with the putty in the cracks and just work towards getting everything in the same zone and there's a lot of damage on this leg to touch up so i'm just gonna keep on looking at what i've got and different angles some areas where the wood was missing here we've got epoxy and that's just going to be that way but i will be darkening this whole area to be a little bit more this tone so i'm gonna add some raw umber spray tint but i'll keep touching those up and then i'll show you how the tint works okay so now i'm gonna use uh the toners so i'm going to use a raw umber toner as well as a medium walnut toner that one's for timber okay so i'm just going to tone over these areas to try to start blending in the the lighter areas and the repairs and this is why when i stain i want my stain to end up being a little light because i want room to tone over all the repairs to blend them in and i'll definitely be having to do this again when i turn the table over because i'll for sure see stuff that i can't see at this angle but if i get it looking good from this upside down first then it will definitely be maybe just a little bit more when i turn it over okay so let that dry and then i'm gonna grab the medium walnut and just give it a little bit of an orange tone if i wanted more orange i would use the burnt umber but i don't want to hold on to this piece because it's a fairly green brown all right so i'm going to put some sealer on this when it's upside down but the next step is definitely turning it over so i'm probably going to have to wait for my husband to come home and do that with me and then we'll see what it looks like there all right so i've got the table flipped over with help from a friend and i've been waxed the top so that's looking a little better here's the leg that we've repaired so can you see any of the repairs maybe a little bit right there you can see any of the dowels you can't see them because we came from the bottom so it's pretty much invisible what we did which is good but you can see it in a couple spaces like a little bit right there then we beeswaxed every other leg as well so that is all back together and looking good and customers called and be picking it up next week so thanks for tuning in on this one guys um and don't forget
