to install a level starter strip for the siding start by locating the lowest point of the sheathing subtract 1/4 inch and snap a level chalk line continue the process around the building next attach the starter strip align the top of the strip with a chalk line and nail it in place every eight to 10 inches leave a minimum of four inches at each end to leave room for standard inside and outside corner posts as you continue along the wall be sure to leave a quarter inch gap between the starter strips for special application areas where the extra height is needed a 5 inch metal starter strip can be used next we'll install the outside corner posts these come in a variety of widths and textures when cutting the length of the corner post leave a quarter inch at the top of the post for expansion and extend the post three quarters of an inch below the bottom of the starter strip trim one inch off of the nail hem on each side so it does not show once siding is installed on the wall be sure the posts are straight and true then nailed them position a nail at the top of the uppermost full nail slot and loose nail it loose nailing means leaving 1/16 to 1/8 inch gap between the nail head and the nail hem position all remaining nails in the center of nail slots a maximum of every 8 to 12 inches and loosely nail by the way if you want to close the bottoms of outside corner posts before installing cut the corner post as shown fold over a tab and pop riveted closed there are four options for trimming inside corners standard three-quarter inch inside corner post single J channel 2j channels federal inside corner to install an inside corner post hang the post one quarter inch from the top of the eave the bottom should extend three quarters of an inch below the starter strip remove the bottom 3/4 of an inch of the nailing flange so it does not show below the siding set the post straight and true position the top nail in the top of the nailing slot all other nails should be in the center to create a narrow corner you can use a single length of j-channel for this application certainteed recommends installing color matching coil stock first install the siding on one wall hang the j-channel lightly against the siding 1/4 inch below the eave and nail it to the substrate on the adjacent wall follow the same positioning and nailing guidelines as inside corner posts you can also use two pieces of j.chan 'el side-by-side to form an inside corner use the same positioning and nailing guidelines as inside corner post finally to install a federal inside corner position and secure a 5 inch or three and a half inch lineal by butting it up to the inside corner always position the top nail in the top of the nailing slot all other nails should be centered in the slots spaced eight to ten inches apart next position the starter strip finally position and secure the remaining lineal using a 5 inch lineal and butting up a three and a half inch lineal two it will create a symmetric three and a half inch exposure in the corner if two three and a half inch lineal Tsar used one exposure will be approximately two and a quarter inches and one will be three and a half inches J channel installs around doors and windows at the eaves and at gable ends one thing to remember when installing J channel around doors and windows is that you want water to run down the sides inside the channels and not into the house to make this work you have to cut rain tabs for some channels and notch out others begin by cutting each length of J channel 2 inches longer than the window dimensions now cut 1 inch out from each end of the bottom J channel install next cut the side J channels at the bottom mitre the face and cut a rain tab top notch out one inch install the side J channels finally cut a rain tab on each end of the top J channel and install under tsultrim see siding under window cuts and eaves and over doors and windows when used in combination with other accessories nail slots must align for new slots created so as not to thin the underlying accessory to install accessories on multi-story structures or very long expanses you must overlap the accessories to allow for expansion and provide water drainage here's the procedure for J channels on the upper J channel cut away a one-inch section of the nailing flange and the lip of the face insert the face of the upper channel into the lower channel three-quarters of an inch leaving a quarter inch gap and nail in place now let's look at overlapping outside or inside corner posts cut one inch off the nailing flange and the back of the receiver from the upper post all the way out to the corners face then trim the lower post by making a relief cut on each end of the face next install the lower post then lap the upper post three-quarters of an inch over the lower post allowing a quarter inch gap for expansion and nail in place here's how to trim around half round and quarter round windows and accents begin by notching out one inch from each end of the bottom J channel and install the j-channel should extend one inch on each side next measure for the circumference of the arch and add at least two inches to allow for trimming cut and install the flexible J channel align the channel along one side of the arch leaving a one inch overhang nail through the flange every six inches tightly securing the flexible J channel you may find it helps to leave the ends of the channel loose until you have trimmed the ends using a utility knife cut through the back of the channel where it extends beyond the edge of the arch make a second cut perpendicular to the first at the base of the channel face the length of the cut should equal the length of the extension repeat at the opposite end of the arch put a 90 degree bend in the channel then nail the resulting tab onto the window finish nailing the ends of the J channel then use a pop rivet to secure each bottom corner use washers on the inside of the rivets to prevent pull through when installing Jade channels for multi-sided windows such as hexagons cut blind miters on each length of the channel install working from the top down overlapping as shown nailed the first piece in place then notch adjacent pieces to provide a rain gutter that allows water to run outside the window here's what happened when vinyl siding is improperly installed around attached service utilities on the first warm day the vinyl expands but the service hookups anchor the vinyl in place and the result is a serious distortion problem here's the easiest way to avoid that problem for a utility line begin by measuring the position of the line and transfer the measurement onto the vinyl siding panel drill a hole 1/4 inch larger than the cable and install the panel add some silicon caulk to waterproof the hole when siding around a water spigot cut a notch around the spigot that leaves a quarter inch gap around the entire fixture and install the siding or install a faucet mounting block and install your siding around the block leading a quarter inch on all sides for expansion when siding around a light fixture install a light block before installing the siding notch out the panel leaving a quarter inch gap around all sides of the light block you there are several ways to trim the odd angles of bay windows here are two of them one is to use a one-piece bay window corner post or you can use J channels combined with a quarter round insert to create a professional look the key is to match the angle of the accessories with the angle formed by the wall or window pop rivet J channel to each side of a corner insert in at least three places then loosely nail the assembly to the corner for peace corner systems add distinctive beauty and charm to a home each corner post consists of four parts corners daughter two lineal 's and a quarter round snap in insert lineal ZAR available in two board widths five inch and three and a half inch first measure the vertical span leaving a quarter inch for expansion at the top four corners twelve feet or shorter and three-eighths of an inch four corners longer than 12 feet extent the corner post three quarters of an inch below the siding starter strip cut all four pieces with a circular saw begin installing by loosely hang nailing the corner starter strip leaving the proper clearance at the top working from the top down loosely center nail every eight to 12 inches next lock the first lineal into the starter strip then nail in place just like the starter strip repeat the procedure for the second lineal now snap in the quarter round corner insert working from the bottom up snap the longer leg first into the nail flange side of the starter strip then snap in the shorter leg lightly press along the length of the insert as you snap in place super corners wide one-piece corners have rigid foam inserts to make them easier to handle and keep straight after installation to install cut it to length allowing one quarter inch at the top and three-quarters of an inch at the bottom loosely nail one side from the top most full nail slot be sure it is plumb and loose nail the other side at the top when installing outside corner posts greater than 12 feet in length use two nails per side at the top of the corner post each positioned at the top of the nailing slot now work your way down the corner Center nailing one side than the other and 8 to 12 inches it's also a good idea to check for plum several times as you proceed in addition to the beaded style super corner already shown super corners one-piece corners also come in a traditional style as well as in a fluted corner here's how to install wide window and door casings around a window will install three and a half inch lineal x' with a square cut five inch header measure and cut for new construction window and door starter strips leaving a quarter inch for expansion and contraction at each end loosely nail the horizontal strips in place and hang the vertical strips by placing a nail in the top of the uppermost nail slot then Center nail every eight to twelve inches next measure and cut three and a half inch lineal x' to make a bottom and two side lineal x' add seven inches to the bottom lineal so that it matches the width of the two side lineal x' when installed the side lineal should extend three and a half inches below the window and extend one and a half inches above the window next cut the five-inch header long enough to fit above the two side lineal x' prepare the bottom lineal by notching out three quarter-inch tabs from each end of the lineal as shown now snap in the bottom lineal next mitre cut the bottom of each side lineal and cut a three-quarter inch rain tab as shown snap the side lineal Xin to place and slide the mitered corners together finally nailed the lineal zin position using the nailing technique previously shown prepare the header by tracing the dimensions of the side lĂneas onto it then cut away these sections next cut three quarter inch rain tabs into the top of the header at each end next create caps for the header to make a right side end cap start with a seven inch piece of header stock mark then cut off two inches of the lineal face next make a two inch cut inside the channel leaving a 2-inch ring tab then knots 3/4 inch out of the opposite end of the channel cut off two inches of the nailing flange and finally cut off the leg of the panel face repeat this procedure to create the left end cap apply silicone caulk to the end caps and slide into place finally on the header' and loosely sent her nail in place if you will be installing crown molding above the 5 inch header you will need to cut the caps for the header differently start with two nine and a quarter inch pieces of header stock cut two inches off one end of the panel leaving just a two inch rain tab then cut two and a quarter inches off the face of the other end as shown next cut off the leg of the panel face finally cut a three quarter inch notch into the receiver pocket snap in the cap header cut the crown molding two-and-a-half inches longer than the header leave the foam in the back for support cut the end caps in half and slide them into the molding then trace the contour of the end caps onto the inside of the crown molding and cut to length along this line seal it with silicone caulk then slide in the end cap wiping away excess caulk finally position the crown molding above the header and nail every eight to twelve inches on center another great architectural inspired finishing touch is the corner block and rosette the corner blocks can be installed with or without the rosette if you choose to include the rosette assemble it before installing it find the small dimple on the back of the corner block drill or punch a 1/8 inch hole through the face of the corner block at that location place the rosette into position and applied the rosette clip on the back you may want to the hole before applying the rosette to install this accessory you will cut the three-and-a-half inch side lineal x' so they will be even with the top of the window and extend three and a half inches beneath the window to accommodate the miter cuts with snips cut one inch long cuts in the pocket areas on both sides of each side lineal these cuts allow the lineal x' to connect with the corner blocks and provide the proper drainage the top lineal so it is 1/4 inch wider than the top of the window on each side insert the corner blocks onto the header and then place into position onto the side lineal x' snap the header in place to install three and a half inch snap-on lineal 's you must use one inch faced j-channel measure the window and cut the GA channel to fit around the window like a picture frame nail the J channel every eight to twelve inches measure for the top of the casing and add seven inches three and a half inches extra for each side after the pieces cut to length flip it over and cut 3/8 of an inch off the locking leg as shown snap the lineal over the GA channel is shown repeat the process for the bottom of the casing measure for the side casings and include the width of the top and bottom casings use a triangle to create a 45-degree angle or measure three and a half inches in from the edge of the part use snips or a miter saw to remove this portion flip the part over and remove the corner of the locking leg as shown this should be done to both ends finally snap in the side casings over the J channel to install two and a half inch window and door casings around a window just follow these steps measure and cut for window casing lineal x' making sure to include enough material to overlap at the corners for a finished appearance blind miter the corner sections fit side lineal x' into the bottom piece provide a water gutter around the window by cutting and bending the tabs at the top lineal and install to make an attractive transition between two siding styles installed one on top of the other use three and a half inch or 5 inch double channel lineal 's begin by marking the position of the double channel lineal and snap a level chalk line at this point position the double channel lineal along this chalk line and nail be sure to leave one quarter of an inch to 3/8 of an inch gap between the lineal and corner posts install under sill trim into the bottom of the double channel lineal align the nail slots then Center nail then rip cut the top course of bottom style of siding bunch tabs and install finally install the upper course
