[Music] hey what's up guys welcome to how to do computers i'm mike and today we're going to be installing windows server 2019 we're going to be installing this on a separate computer so we'll need a usb drive that's at least 16 gigabytes to get started we'll have to get the installation image from microsoft for that go ahead and go here i'll put that link down in the description below here microsoft provides us with an evaluation copy of windows server 2019 as well as a few other products quick disclaimer you are only legally allowed to use this in a non-production test environment like a home lab as you can see here the evaluation license lasts for 180 days at which time it will expire and the server will begin shutting down about every hour or so unless you purchase a license you are able to legally extend this trial period with the sl manager command which i will demonstrate later in the video another big thing to note here is that any windows server running a domain controller role such as active directory is not able to be licensed after evaluation what you would need to do is license a new copy of windows server and then transfer the roles from the evaluation server to the newly licensed server so if you see here under windows server 2019 and under get started for free there are three options one is to deploy to azure the other is to download an iso file and the other is to download a vhd or virtual hard drive file if we were installing this virtually say to hyper-v we might want to use the vhd file but for now we'll stick with the iso and then click continue you can enter whatever information you want here so i'll go ahead and do that quick click continue here you'll select your language i'll choose english and then download the download should start automatically and i'll wait for that to complete alright the download is finished so let's go ahead and pull up rufus and then we'll select the iso we just downloaded make sure that the correct usb drive is selected and i'll set this to mbr boot everything else should be fine at default and we'll hit start hit ok here and it will begin writing the image to the disk i'll get back once that's complete once the image is finished writing we'll go ahead and remove it and plug it into our other computer with the usb drive inserted we'll go ahead and power on our machine while hitting the appropriate key to enter a boot menu in our case that'll be escape and then f9 we'll go down to our kingston data traveler and it will load into the windows installer here we'll click next and then install now here we'll choose the version we'd like to install i'll select the standard evaluation version with the desktop experience if you choose to install without the desktop experience that'll install without a graphical user interface and you'll be operating entirely from the command line hit next accept the license terms and hit next here we'll go to custom select our hard drive hit next and we will wait for the installation to complete so after the installation the computer should reboot a couple of times and then you'll be prompted to enter a password i'll go ahead and do that now then you'll be dropped at the login screen for the sake of ease i've switched to a virtual environment for this recording but all of these configurations will be the same regardless of whether you're on bare metal or on a vm so let's go ahead and do our control alt delete command and get logged in we'll hit yes to make our computer discoverable on the network so the first thing you'll see when logging in is the server manager personally i find it a bit annoying to have this pop up every time i log in so i like to disable having it automatically start on login to do that we'll go ahead and dismiss this message then we'll go to manage server manager properties and then check do not start server manager automatically at logon okay and then we'll close out of the server manager for now a very important first step to installing windows server is to make sure that all updates are installed in order to maintain the security and the stability of windows to do that go down to your start menu type update hit enter and then here we'll click on the check for updates button this may take a little while now installing all of the updates on a fresh install of windows server depending on your hardware it can take anywhere from several minutes to a few hours so instead of waiting for all of the updates to install i'll go ahead and skip ahead to after all of the updates are installed so now after about an hour and a half and three times of checking for updates installing and restarting our machine we are completely up to date now let's go ahead and open up our server manager and then we'll go over to local server here on the left now there are many ways to do the types of configurations we are going to cover in this video but the server manager actually provides a nice interface for changing a lot of the necessary settings for the server in one convenient dashboard so here under the server properties you can see all sorts of information the name the firewall status the time zone and so forth we will be changing a few of these so the first thing we're going to do is change the computer name so you'll just go up to computer name click on it it'll bring up the advanced system properties go down to change and we're going to call this svr dc01 because this is going to be our domain controller go ahead and hit ok ok again ok again close and we don't want to restart quite yet so we'll select restart later the next thing we're going to do is enable remote desktop here we'll just click next to remote desktop disabled and down here we'll select allow remote connections to this computer we'll hit ok and apply now this should automatically add an exception to the windows firewall but if you want to make sure you can always go up here to the windows defender firewall click on it click on allow app through firewall and it will bring up the allowed apps options in the control panel if you scroll down to remote desktop you can see that an exception has been added so we can exit out of here the next thing we need to do is make sure that our time zone and internet time protocol are set correctly so here next to time zone go ahead and click here and then we'll go to change time zone up here there's a drop down menu i am in central time so i'll select that hit ok and then over on the internet time tab you want to make sure that you are synchronizing with an internet time server if you are running a local time server on your network here's where you will enter that information or if you have a preferred time server you would like to use you can enter that here as well for now i'll stick with the default time.windows.com and for good measure i'll click update now to make sure that the time is fully synchronized with the time server hit ok ok again as with any persistent server we'll want to assign a static ip address so here under ethernet click on ipv4 address right click on the adapter go to properties double click internet protocol version 4 and then choose use the following i p address here we'll assign ourselves an ip address i'll use 192.168.1.250. the subnet mask will automatically fill in you may or may not need to change this based on your network configuration i'm running the default slash 24 cider block so i won't need to change anything my default gateway will be my firewall so that will be 192.168.1.1 under the dns settings you will point it to the appropriate dns server you can enter a preferred dns server and an alternate dns server if this is a domain computer that is being joined to a domain here's where you'll probably put in your domain controller or if it's not on a domain you can use a public dns service like google or cloudflare in our case this is going to be the domain controller so the preferred dns server will actually be our local host which will be 127.0.0.1 and then as the secondary dns server i'll enter google's 8.8.8.8 and then we'll hit ok and for now i'll disable ipv6 as that can cause some conflicts on a domain network depending on the services you're running hit ok and then we can close out of the control panel here earlier in the video i mentioned rearming the evaluation license for windows server 2019 so i'm currently connected to a different test server that's been up for a few days i'll go ahead and demonstrate that here let's go ahead and open up a command prompt make sure to run it as an administrator to check your current licensing status type slmgr.vbs dash dli so you'll come up here it'll tell you that you have 174 days left okay to rearm you'll type slmgr.vbs dash rearm you rearm the system let's go ahead and do a restart here so we've rebooted the system and i can see down in the lower right corner that we've gone from 174 days remaining to 180. the rearm process can be done a total of six times to increase the trial period for your copy of windows up to i believe three years all right and now we'll head back to our other server now i'm not quite sure why but microsoft is still bundling internet explorer as the only internet browser with server 2019 so i would like to change that the simplest method would be to download the installer elsewhere and transfer it via usb flash drive or shared network drive or even via rdp client-side sharing but let's say that for whatever reason none of these options are available to us before we launch ie we'll need to make it able to download an installer so in our server manager go to ie enhanced security configuration go ahead and turn it off for administrators as the current account is an administrator account hit okay now we'll launch internet explorer it'll give us a warning that protected mode is turned off that's fine and from here you'll search for and install your browser of choice for now i'll use microsoft edge and once you're done installing your preferred browser you can close out of ie and hopefully never have to launch it again on this machine be sure to turn back on ie enhanced security and there we are so now we'll do one last restart to apply the computer's name and there you have it we should have a fully configured fresh instance of windows server to play with so that will conclude this video as always thanks for watching if you run into any problems let me know in the comments below and i'll see you in the next video [Music] you
