Is it a coincidence that the two people living there are young architecture majors?

"each room is built around a different function"

So they just took a normal house and turned each room into separate apartments...

I don't know man, I respect both of those tenants' positive outlook but taking a house and splitting it up into different micro-apartments doesn't seem right to me. Those two empty rooms shown at the beginning look like they would be absolutely abysmal to live in.

If I was in college and really wanted to focus then a tiny apt would be fine. Eating out all the time is expensive though so you'd have cash in the bank for it...

That ceiling looks like it has zero insulation though.

Not much mystery to that mystery hole, I think it's there to allow air flow for that weirdly positioned aircon unit (how could you sleep right beside it??) but it would probably be covered by a mattress... Maybe also to allow light down to the door or possibly a murder hole?

That loft is also only suited to someone very short...

When I was in Argentina I was talking to someone and they said their apartment was something like 300 Sq ft. As an American I was, of course, aghast. She explained it's only for sleeping and that she is out of the house pretty much 18 hours a day. I was kind of jealous, everyone there just hangs out with friends and does stuff all day. Their small places made my house feel empty :(

Dude really loves his bath.

That girl’s room was the best one there. Great living room. Just large enough bathtub with a good demarcation. Then again, the tub seems like a half tub so probably not comfortable. The small kitchen was an excellent bonus.

First room was horrid. So dark and dank.

Didn’t like the second room. The ladder was worrying.

The guy’s room was too cramped. Too many things with too large a bathtub.

This building behind me right here is filled with interesting and potentially controversial apartments each with its own catch. and today we’re gonna head inside and check out a few. This place is called Sakura and you can actually see into one of the units up there! it’s located in the northern part of Tokyo and our first unit is right here so let’s head in and take a peek. Alright, so this is it here. this is apparently supposed to be a garden space I Kinda guess that would work as a garden space, But the real shocker, is the room its self There’s the bed That’s it It’s just that right there, and this is your shower With, your toilet right there! That is just… I honestly wonder if you could even sit. I’m going to kind of hover here a little bit I feel like you still have to lean forward a bit, and then you’d be staring at your bed and the shower But on the plus side, you have a lot of legroom, which is more than I can say for the next unit But right out of the gate, this place is far from being soundproof… Like the women next door are having a conversation right now and… Wow OK So this window space does open up, so if you wanted to… You could, not use this space, because it is not useable at all! We’re gonna go ahead and close that And I would assume that the space under the bed opens up for some kind of storage Ok kind of…. Kind of And this door the front of the room opens up so I guess if you wanted to you could just air out the entire place In the next room is a little… I don’t wanna say crazier, but… I think crazier is going to be the right word. You see, no two rooms in this place are the same. Each one is unique. It was built by a designer and has a bit of a design concept for each room. One room the bath is the main point, another room the kitchen is the main point, another room is just like a living space. This entire place was originally designed to just be one big house. A space where your friends could just pop in and out. Kind of like a share house. But ended up just becoming an apartment with separate units… Sorry, I instantly got distracted as soon as I walked into this room. What is this? I have never seen an apartment like this before! How does this even? Ok so you’ve got your toilet there and you’ve got what I guess you would call a half bath right here. That is so Tiny. And then, how would you? Can you even? No way. There’s no space. OK, they told me that the toilet was in a bit of a tight space. Can you move this? This is moveable. ISH… kind of. But even without the latter you still have this pole right here. One of the big benefits to this place are the large windows which can take a small space and really make it feel more open but it’s also a double edge sword when it comes to privacy especially if you live in one of the units that faces the street, because people can just see right into your apartment. I don’t know… Maybe some people like that but let’s check out this space. And this… is the “sleeping space”. The window space opens here as well, there’s definitely enough space for a bed. I’ve got kind of a long torso but there’s enough space for me to sit up and look at the mystery hole… You have your air-conditioning unit right here and then the mystery hole. Mystery hole. Obviously not all homes in Japan are like this. There are bigger places. Which shouldn’t need to be said but… but some people just don’t need a bigger spaces. I do. I need a bigger space but I met two of the residents who live here. They both have the apartments that face the road over there and they have both sought out living in a smaller space
