presented by airplane Intel connecting quality people with quality airplanes today we meet John our biggest mission profile was when we first purchased this aircraft we were doing a lot of traveling to Texas so for us it's about 16 and a half hour drive one way and we can do it in less than five hours to get a tour of his Cessna 340 he's getting ready to sell it and asked us for some help we're airplane Intel we travel the country to help pilots and airplane owners buy maintain and sell their Cessna and Citation aircraft in just a moment we're going to catch up with John to give a tour of his airplane and find out what it's like to own a twin Cessna then we're putting you in the pilot seat for a test flight but first let's learn more about the acclaimed Cessna 340 the Cessna 340 is a six seat pressurized cabin class piston twin developed by Cessna Aircraft Company in 1969 deliveries began in 1971 with almost 1300 airframes produced before production ceased in 1984 the Cessna 340 is the fastest of the Cessna twins while sharing some of the design features from both the smaller 310 and larger 414 the Cessna 340 is surprisingly simple to fly and incredibly stable in IMC conditions it's also quite fast cruising at 225 knots at 75 percent power at flight level to 3-0 burning only 20 gallons per side the Cessna 340 is a perfect go between airplane for pilots and owners needing more room comfort and useful load without the size and complexity of a larger for 14 or turboprop passengers will love it too thanks to its airstair door large cabin and powerful pressurization system we're excited to introduce this 1972 Cessna 340 serial number 173 this aircraft features the RAM for conversion with the more powerful tsio-520-c and B engines producing 325 horsepower with a t-bo of 1,600 hours the RAM format also gives a 340 a gross weight increased to six thousand two hundred and ninety pounds giving us a useful load of about 2,300 pounds - the 163 gallons of usable fuel your full fuel payload is about 1,300 pounds both engines have fresh tap overhauls and feature McCauley three bladed q-tip props for a quieter cabin the aircraft is also equipped with full like nudie ice boots Viji kit and cell strakes upgraded avionics hideous be in and out and a lot more best of all this 340 is flown regularly professionally maintained and has a fresh annual this is adam from airplane Intel and it's our goal to connect quality people with quality airplanes which is why we're here in Anniston Alabama just outside of Atlanta Georgia to check out this Cessna 340 professionally flown always hangar well maintained no damage history it'll get you where you need to go in both style and comfort now you can learn more about the airplane by checking the links below in the description to see things such as more photos the pre buy report from the pre by inspection that we did the spec sheet and a whole lot more you can also schedule a tour by sending an email to add them at airplane intel.com now let's coach meet up with John again to learn more about this airplane and then we're going to put you in the right seat to do a demo test flight so buckle up and let's go flying John thanks for taking some time to talk to us about it and to show everyone your airplane first of all tell us a little bit more about yourself and how you got started in aviation so Adam thank you for coming down today and taking a look at our plane I got started about five years ago in aviation I had a neighbor they had a little arrow 180 and we he's taking me up on the weekends and get a feel for it and he actually bought a different plane and let me buy his third than what he had and that's how I got started with my license and we've moved up since then so we now have a 340 in the commander 114 TC and 340 is our family plane we use it mostly to go back and forth Texas and we and our employees when we shuttle them around to the different greenhouses around the eastern United States very cool so talk to us a little bit more I mean you go in a couple airplanes it's been involved in aviation for a while what you to a340 as opposed to another another piston twin 340 is a cabin size the pressurization we I mean we were doing a lot of night flights at the time so the safety of having two engines weren't able to go above the weather a lot of times yeah and it just was the right fit for us at the time very good well there's definitely no questioning that that pressurized airplane makes life a lot better especially on those long trips and especially when you have family with you so if it's just you and another person flying you know putting on the oxygen cannulas it's not a big deal but if you got to put it on all your kids your wife and it just makes the trip not as uh comfortable sure absolutely now you do your own flying of course but you have a professional pilot line tell us a little bit more about that so on the 340 we have a date-rape pilot I mean he basically flies from our company and another company here in Alabama and Joe is an experienced pilot he's been with flying for over 40 years cool calm and collective and he does a great job knows when to go when not to go and when things are wrong and we're also fortunate here in Anniston at our home base that we have a local EMP that's able to work if we have any issues very good and you know I'm in Apia myself I did the pre buy on this airplane and it's in very good shape especially for considering the age of the airplane so obviously you've been taking really good care of it which perspective buyers going to appreciate greatly but what are some some things maybe that you've come across in from the Maine that maybe you weren't expecting any maintenance gotchas or surprises with the aircraft if you do your research the maintenance part wasn't for us it wasn't that big of a deal it's basically the biggest problem is the heavy onyx I mean as we update the avionics and and try to figure out some of these legacy systems and we've slowly been doing that so that's been great obviously you guys weren't we're at an airport so there's gonna be some airplane noise around so well adapt and overcome to that but anyway yeah that's three point now the this airplane has most of the stock avionics in it - the navigation equipment you want to just talk to us about some of the equipment it's in the airplane so that's probably a better question for Joe because he knows the but I can give you a little a little brief assure we got the 480 lost GPS in there and then we also have the 200 G the garment 200 PDF basically the older-style so it has the legacy Cessna autopilot and we use it we use it and then and then we kind of did it we did the ASV upgrade with the 3/3 30s which is a squid occurred so it's ABS out and then we have a portable unit that allows us to do our satellite and in our ABS be in very good and that's actually obviously a pretty important thing oh yeah deadlines coming for that a lot of people are really focusing in on their airplane ATS be out compliant not just equip there's a lot of airplanes I've seen this is actually a blinder that's correct so going back to like know you do a lot of flying as a passenger in this airplane as well so talk to us about the comfort especially when you have your family with you I mean there's a big difference between a smaller piston swing like a baron and even a high-performance single compared to a can of class and you want to talk to us a little bit more about yeah so the the cabin space is awesome I mean beam it's a little tight getting into the you know the in the right seat sometimes but once you get past and figure out how to throw you like the right way it's it's no big deal as for the passengers it's great we normally leave out the six seat which makes it a little easier to get in now we do put it in sometimes I mean we took this plane to the marathon down in Florida go fishing a couple months ago and when we had to packed out with six men and it made it there and back and it was a good flight but no as far as family you know we normally take out the six seats my wife and my daughter and she loves to play in the back so she's out of her seat belt on and since that seats missing right there and she's got all her toys on the floor and she likes to do that and now it's just comfortable I mean we flew up to Washington two weeks ago BC and we had you know there's five of us in there Joe and for other people and I mean two and a half hour flight from Anniston Alabama to Washington they seal in Manassas and it's just comfortable yeah and it sounds like you can really feel the airplane up and it's got plenty of useful load and the range to make those types of trips that's correct that's great that's really important a lot you know a lot of times it's a it's trade-off when one area or another but this airplane does most things pretty well yeah and we got an advantage over a lot of other 340s is we do not have a C system in it which a lot of people think is a negative but for us it allows us to have a little more weight yes capacity yeah and when we went flying in earlier and we'll be going flying in it again shortly the just the stock blower keeps the air circulating nicely even though it was pretty warm when we flew it already this morning but so really the AC thing is more of a preference I suppose that's good now obviously this is 73 model dozen 340 but this isn't a 1973 paint job can you just remind us what what year was the airplane painting if I believe correctly I don't have to go back in logs I believe 2011 I think this plan was painted this plant spent a lot of time in Utah out west well and the paint job it looks really nice still and that's because you keep it in a tea hangar we do you do and that's that's that makes a big difference in the overall reliability and longevity of the paint then it's gotten hard to have an aircraft and have that investment in it just to leave it out to the elements so we're stronger believers in that definitely so tell us a little bit more about about the the things you do with the airplane so you use it for business use it for personal travel as well so it's it's kind of a do anything it's like an SUV almost right so tell us a little bit more about the mission profile that you have and other people might share that same mission profile that wouldn't want to perhaps consider at 3:40 so our biggest mission profile was when we first purchased this aircraft we were doing a lot of traveling to Texas so for us it's about 16 and a half hour drive one way and we can do it in less than five hours and that that to us being able to go do our business and be back the same day means a lot especially if you have a family I mean it's being able to go to your kids games and be back and not spin if you do it commercial it's about a three-day trip kind of coordinated the airlines and then try to do some other stuff so it's a it's for us it works well it and a lot of time to defeat the commercial airline oh yes for sure course you're on your own schedule you can't put a price on that okay so John we've talked a lot about the capabilities of the airplane and the condition of it now a lot of people coming from piston singles or some of the smaller twins may be a little intimidated to fly a 340 because they think it's gonna cost them a lot more money which of course is added cost to it as you would expect from a bigger airplane but can you give us an idea roughly what the ownership costs are what the operational costs are for the airplane so for us I cannot have I can only go on what it's cost us so basically insurance for this aircraft a year cost us right at $5,000 our hangar fees here are reasonable it's about 40 hangar it's 200 a month our fuel cost I mean operating costs per hour we figured with fuel burn and a little bit of reserve we're figuring that about 450 500 an hour our annual the aircraft just came out of haneul that cost me about 5,000 so you think for about 15 thousand dollars plus fuel a year is what this airplane is gonna cost you okay and I mean you know that's an investment by pretty reasonable RIA so you think about especially when you consider what the airplane can do for you and perhaps your business or your family goals and so more than what's time worth right right exactly so just give us an idea like so you can have the airplane for a while now how many hours did you fly last year so we last year we flew before we went to an annual about 120 hours 110 20 hours I spend most of the time flying with Joe or pilot so I sit right seat so you get a lot of that time myself so a lot of people get too intimidated by the 340 it's just a big it's not the Baroness it's low but I've gotten to you know fly right seat the thing handles amazingly its you you think such a big aircraft to be heavy the things light on the controls but no it's been it's been a great aircraft for us good yeah and you know when we fluid we definitely know it's the airplane stays coordinated real well it's not it's not necessarily any more difficult to manage from a pilot's perspective and then your high performance single no I mean it's it's very similar to the Baron if you fly Baron you can fly this sure so one thing I want to point out about this airplane is that you've you've taken really good care of it and going through the maintance records though the previous owners have have taken good care of it as well but it is a airplane that's utilized pretty regularly right so we wouldn't expect this to be like the ritz-carlton per se but it's a functional practical safe reliable airplane right yes I would first of all I love my life and and I would have put my family's life in danger or my employees so we take very a lot of pride and a lot of precautions to make sure we're flying it's something that's safe for sure and you got a lot of people that end up having to go with us especially workers that are not normal aviators you want them to be you know their first experience sometimes it's fine with us you don't want it to be a bad experience works that uh but no it's been a great point awesome and it's got a lot of potential to for the next owner to customize it the way they want you with avionics or other modifications and so on yeah and this plan is definitely not a showpiece like you were saying before I mean we're all about utility at the home so it works for what we do yeah and cosmetically the airplane is a very good condition I would say overall but like I said the utility you're not going to spend money on cosmetic things you're more careful with us taking care of it's items that are gonna affect safety or quality of the airplane that's correct and I can tell you firsthand - then that guy that will take care of any issue or question that you have you know we had some questions when we did the pre buy and he was able to clear them up or or take care of whenever we need it so that says a lot about about you and the folks we have taken care of here playing with you yeah we were like I said before - we were very fortunate to have our local mechanic here mom just give you a little rundown we fly in most times late at night 10 11 o'clock at night everything is closed of course we park we park our aircraft outside the maintenance hangar and our mom mechanics come in they look it over check anything we leave them with squawk list if there's something that needs to be taken care of and then they take care of it put it back in the hangar and then we're ready to go for next time it doesn't really get much much easier than that no we're very blessed here yes but like I said the airplane does have a lot of potential which which i think is a great thing oh yeah and then that's I mean and I know that's one thing people will say why you getting rid of it we have two airplanes really you're you're you a little bit of a change in mission basically for us and a lot of times it is just two of us and there would be a lot of times it'll be just me this is a lot of plane for one person sure sure plus the insurance for a lower time pilot would be a lot more expensive as well yeah it might be different but I mean from Joe I mean that's another thing we talked about a cost I hired Joe he's on a daily rate he cost me $400 a day is what a day rate for him eight-hour day and most people purchasing 340 should expect at least have some time flying with the mentor pilot someone like Joe as part of their insurance oh yeah for sure that's a good gives us a good ballpark of what they can expect to be paying you know a mental palate to give him the proper training for the aircraft even when I bought my commander and started flying it with an insurance company required me to get twenty-five hours in it with somebody yeah and that's interesting now another thing I want to point out and emphasize is that you don't have to be an owner pilot per se to enjoy this airplane like you you fly mostly as a passenger and you know fulfills your mission still so just because you may not be a multi-engine instrument-rated pilot with all this time doesn't mean that 340 may not you know still be a good airplane oh yeah for sure for sure and sometimes it's nice after a long day well you don't have to get behind the yoke in all the controls and have to deal with your the stress of flying as well sometimes yeah and you know add that the flight planning and all that on top of your already busy day plus you can get some work done in the back is nice a little pull up to double that back for everything have you had any issues with dispatch reliability you know had a canceled flight to remains problem or anything like that I'm hysterical we have not yet but fortunately we have not I mean not to say that it would have never happened but it's a it's a mechanical piece of equipment so right never know right it's something that I keep an eye out for as a mechanic our maintenance alerts and service typically reports the column as well as special or worthiness information bulletins and they basically give us the fa push those out saying hey look these are some things that have been found in the field for specific make model airplanes they're not IDs or anything like that but so those are those are hot ticket items were for specific airplanes so we we went through the airplane and checked out all those items for instance the the torque tube on the main landing gear or the the trunnion on the nose gear and some of the exhaust stacks and all this but yeah airplanes got no no big issues this this aircraft in 2017 into 2017 eight and a beginning 18 went through a very extensive extensive annual slash squawk repair I mean all the ladies were brought up to speed and complied with this aircraft in the last six months just had new top in overhaul so the cylinders are the you know all 12 cylinders have been replaced yeah and it's got fresh top overhaul and then mid just time to time engines grab the lower end and the health of the engines is we'll find out when we go fly the Vengeance perform as they showed by the book it's a it's a strong airplane all-around definitely and it has the ramp to conversion yeah that's a little nice that's nicer than the the stock 340 engines over on earth it's got the q-tip props as well it does it does that's a nice feature makes the airplane noticeably quieter honestly something I definitely noticed right away when we when we put full power and started taking up and climbing that it's not nearly as loud as a lot of airplanes of airplanes without the cube and there's not any real vibration either they're playing real smooth it is smooth and I've actually had people comment that they've been in the back and have been in a TBM or epic or something you know high-performance turboprop there's like it's a lot quieter in here we can we can talk and have a conversation in this cabin without headphones yes that's not to mention the convenience factor of that but it being in an airplane for four or five hours with with all that noise it's the Tegan yes it is for sure so all of these things make this particular 340 and airplane worth considering oh yeah for sure for sure and and working with you John you're a great owner so I know you know when when a person that might be interested in the airplane you'll be there to definitely help them we leave them down the right right oh yeah we're here to help I mean this is this this aircraft has been great to us I mean like I said our mission has changed it's a lot of aircraft for just two people basically flying yeah but I mean like I've told that before I mean I have no problem keeping it either it's a it's been great and we use it and family loves it perfect well do you have any advice for anyone considering purchasing stepping up into a cabin class between like at 3:40 I'd say do a lot of back just do your research there there's a lot of good articles out on it a lot of different you know just like anything else Oh Adam airplane Intel and he can give you a lot of information as well but no just do your research and and make sure it's the aircraft you feel comfortable with great well John thanks again for spending time with us to tell us about your before to be appreciate a not a problem thank you for coming out looking at it alright let's go flying well not so fast first we do a thorough pre-flight and meet our pilot Joe all right now we're here with the pilot of this airplane Joe Joe thanks for taking some time with us Wendy tell us a little bit about yourself in about this airplane absolutely Joe sqi fly this for John Ben we've been flying almost a year and a half now so we really like the airplane it's a it does everything he needs it to do well that's good but you're it's not just the airplane though it's also you right because you're a very experienced pilot tussel about that okay well I've I've been flying for 45 years and I flew for Delta for 26 years and then I've owned my own playing a baron and then I fly Navajo this 340 and a aero commander 114 for four people also very cool so of all the airplanes that you've been flying this is your favorite right of course all right so can you just tell us what the typical mission of the airplane is and and some of the performance that you see out of it okay what it's pressurized and that's that's why I like it the high it'll go to 25,000 the highest we've been is 23,000 when we took delivery on the airplane we flew from Salt Lake to Aniston with a fuel stop and in Kansas so that it's got some excellent range on it for four to three four people it just it just doesn't get any better aircraft to do the missions as feel burn you can anywhere from 15 and a half to 18 gallons an hour per side so you can easily go four hours in the aircraft and more if you need to probably do four hours with IFR reserves as far as performance on runways wouldn't have any problem going into a 3,000 foot runway unless there's a really hot day and your absolute max gross but so I did it gets on and off of aircraft of runways pretty quickly you can get it slow to 88 75 knots for landing so there's not a lot of ground roll after landing very good and the typical mission of the airplane is to fly from from here in ansan Alabama to to where okay so he does nursery so we go around and check different nurseries so it's North Carolina Tennessee some trips into Florida they also have some land in Texas so we can make it at least back from Texas non-stop and sometimes non-stop out past Fort Worth so so good range on the airplane yeah absolutely is there anything else you should that you'd like to tell our viewers about the airplane oh well let's just go fly it and say sounds good I like it master switch down we got some good audio alright I'll jump on on the right engine control surfaces or brain clear and the at a garment 696 use that just for navigation also a blanking exam weather radar it's a little warm in here during the day so we can flip both the board and rear blowers on high okay that comes in handy down south here huh the death I got a Garmin 480 here so that shoots and have approaches we also have a number two radio with the glide slope sofas like an ILS approach I'll put the ILS on the number two radio here through the GPS on the number one radio and I also program some fixes on the 696 kind of backs everything that it's gone through its checks and that that's good on that one and never use the Garmin 480 before it's a little bit different but if you learn all the bells and whistles that works pretty good it's a more capable unit than in a 4:30 or 5:00 30s rolls up over a hundred degrees that's good our engine instruments are also coming up in the green swing taxi a little closer to run YT three over there do I run up off the way from the FBO and maintenance hangars visibility one zero sky condition clear temperature to one Celsius dew point one one Celsius altimeter three zero one six remarks then to the altitude 1200 okay we can put a fly plan in if we want to go a new one with the Aniston is our origin destination we can play Birmingham and execute that so that's in there now we have some map information to our instrument here and so that HSI is slave to before Eddie then is also the garment 200 that I run up and up to 2,000 rpm check the mic looking for deafening 7550 drop on each one okay ride on the right engine right on the left engine left on the right engine left on the left hand Jim checks good good daddy bow my color props get some heated oil up into the process i warp day so - its suicides probably good back 2,000 rpm ready to go all right do a no flap takeoff got plenty of runway here 7,000 feet we'll just do a straight out departure all right and climb up to 15,000 got the pressurization set to about 800 feet try to get as little of a pressure bump as possible on takeoff and we'll run it on up to 15,000 everybody ready to go ready ready all right saw running up to about 33 inches of manifold pressure okay all the turbos have kicked in by now oh yeah engine instruments check good 100 knots and we can go fly all right happens quick you're up Austin right here's up in locked and back on RPM so about twenty four fifty the like I said it's pretty one we're doing what still over a thousand feet a minute yeah at 130 knots nice limes better at 130 135 knots it's better cooling on the engine and go ahead and set 15,000 on the pressure controller that'll give us a little bit of a pressure bomb oh yeah you can feel it that'll give us a cabin about 4,500 feet okay I've been through seven thousand three hundred feet for those people that may not be familiar with the garment JMX to two hundred what's what's that unit for what what are the benefits of it it's just a bigger display the 4:30 to 5:30 or the 480 at a smaller screen so get a bigger screen and zoom in or out go out farther 75 and start losing there's your airports 100 miles you lose your things like military warning areas okay now as the 480 and the 200 connected to each other also yes okay you get a bigger per side view with the 200 yeah and the 696 and also zoom way out as a lot more capability but you turn this knob to get over to all your airport information or your heart you have charts loaded in there so we can look those uh AOPA information like runways no domes FBOs and you also get the weather so those are some weather for farming very good there's almost like a little mini g1000 to put in there I have flipped one more to get the weather across the country oh very good that's comes in handy I'm sure for those longer trips out to Texas it does them down and range and decrease the intensity of it and you can make your way through any lines of whether it's real good for that so this is a like a cruise climb powers I don't know we've got going right now we're doing what just just shy of a thousand feet of man and we're passing through 10,000 feet bill doing letter 25 yep very good 22 23 24 side for fuel yeah run at full rich and I'm sure engines like that yeah it keeps it nice and cool and the fuel controllers work pretty well on this I keep the manifold pressure very constant so I don't have to move absolutely like Cummings you're constantly having to push the throttles up to maintain your climb power alright captain we're between 4 and 5 thousand feet it may not climb very much more than that a lot of people that might be interested in this airplane probably are flying you know probably a high performance single right now or maybe a smaller twin that might be a little intimidated by an airplane a cabin class pressurized when what do you have any advice for people like that I would definitely get a course on it learn fly go to a simulator insurance is probably going to require that anybody maybe get a safety pilot to fly with you for a while so they're comfortable might be 50 hours on the airplane whatever it takes and when you feel comfortable it's it's designed for a pilot flies family around right very capable airplane and I've been watching you fly it in and yeah it's a simple fee of our climb that we're doing right now I'm sure it can get a little more complicated when you're in IMC or dealing with any kind of emergency but for the most part it's a fly by the fingertips airplane like you said you don't have to manage the power very much on this one especially because the field controllers but perhaps although I totally agree with you the training is absolutely a must it's not maybe as intimidating as people might think oh not at all especially if you've got a lot of time in high performance or complex aircraft yes it's very stable VFR and ifr platform the only thing the way the flaps are hooked up when you get that first 15 degrees flat it'll balloon on you're pretty good okay there's no flow through no Fowler flaps no flow through so it's bright if you're on autopilot you have to kind of milk them down a little bit or it'll pop you up on your feet interesting good to know we're out to 13,000 for 15,000 perfect okay still held a good pressure or differentials up around 7:00 nap or RA yeah three three point four on the differential okay and what is the you know the max differential on this point four four point four we're airliners are on a point eight yes okay all right passing through 15,000 and get some speed air going through the engine blows cow flaps about 3.7 on the differential holding less than a 5,000 foot cabin all right come back to 30 inches for cruise it is that 75% power then my 75 to 80 I'll probably come back to 29 after I get it a little bit of speed and 23 23 25 inches on the RPM and start to feel flow about 18 gallons I'll give me one hundred and fifty five hundred and sixty knots indicated and so what's a optimal altitude for a longer trip on an airplane we're on this airplane well it all depends on the wind the westbound this time of year probably twelve to sixteen thousand feet and coming back nineteen to twenty one thousand feet and he easily see 232 240 not tell where Brown speed with they'll win sure and the sense I'll run it on up two hundred eighty two to better knots and Sam that's his pressurizing easily do a thousand feet a minute anyway fuel works on this full fuel 50 gallons in the fifth so wanted to be below forty gallons for you switch to the Hogs tank so you will not burn is poured it back into the mains and they're the only ones with buspar descending a thousand feet a minute 180 indicated 249 ground speed that'll get you there quick and no discomfort to your ears three four hundred foot minute cabin rate and so what are your procedures vent for for avoiding shot cooling as where as we're coming down just know pull the power back I just go bad simple right I'm crying out to pull below 25 inches man of over if they were sending over two thousand feet a minute so power up 269 ground speed those really not a problem if you don't pull the throttles back yeah so we're squarely in the middle of the dilib and on the airspeed yep yeah no no shuttering no no shaking or anything like that and I've noticed since you've been you know and flying this this whole flight it's been airplane flies very straight there's no rigging issues with flight controls or anything like that the airplane stays coordinated to the turns that's that's excellent you don't see that in a lot of the older airplanes and we did a little redo on the autopilot system and that helped a lot okay the ball would get outside the lines there last much straighter that's like flying in an airliner coping it open it at 240 knots honestly it feels smooth pull it back 25 inches now blow it down so we don't run over that Archer all right all right here we'll show you that flap pitch up okay 180 miles an hour drop up to 15 degrees and quite a bit of nose down all right 1,600 feet midfield drop the gear unlock down three green and go to flaps 30 and we looking for 120 not some damn for 100 knots on bass by one ninety ninety five to ninety on final alright if I can get slower than that you get out about eighty you'd be really coming into a short field Airport I flaps the land back to 20 inches own final rich on the fuel and it can stop pretty sure if we need it to oh yeah laughs up cow pop so thanks for flying along to get the full specs on this 340 as well as access maintenance records the pre buy report and more photos head over to Cessna 340 airplane in Telkom you can also schedule a tour and demo flight by saying an email to add them at airplane intel.com as always thanks for watching and fly safely
