No McLaren F1? Unless I misheard it sounded like Gordon said he sold his F1 to start this collection.
A very cool tour - really gives you an idea where Gordon's designs are coming from.
I have to touch on the "how would the T.50S perform at Le Mans" response, though. Yes, the T.50S has less downforce than LMP1 cars, but it's not just a bit less as Gordon is suggesting. It's a lot less. You couldn't make the difference up with just a bit more wind tunnel or CFD work.
To give you an idea of the difference, currently the T.50S is producing roughly 825kg of downforce at 250km/h. If they didn't scale the downforce down and went with the original design, it would be 1030kg. LMP1 cars, on the other hand, produce about 2800kg at 250km/h. Which is actually more than F1 cars. This number is gonna differ somewhat depending on what setup the teams choose to run, but whichever way you cut it, that's massively more than the T.50S.
In reality, the T.50S would be faster than the GTE cars because while the downforce is less (825kg vs 1000kg), it also weighs a lot less (852kg vs 1245kg) so the cornering force would be slightly higher (2.27G vs 2.14G), and it has much higher power to weight ratio (734PS/t vs 436PS/t - with fuel and driver). It would be much slower than the LMP1 cars that have the same power to weight ratio but can corner at 4.67G and still a lot slower than the LMP2 cars that can corner at 4.02G and have 556PS/t.
The fastest racing cars that the T.50S could beat would probably be the F3. Those too have much more downforce but their engine are quite weak. Even then, if it could beat them, it would probably be only just. Hopefully we get to see someone test this at some point!
I wonder what it would cost to own the instrument that drew the original Mclaren F1 !
Gordon is what i want in a car manufacturing CEO.
Great endorsement for the Alpine A110
Nice video with some very interesting cars. Looks well thought out. Never heard of that Honda s800 before but checked a video, what a cool car that is!
That was a real treat.
His design philosophy is so right. The world needs to swift towards more lightweight cars and not just because they perform better and are nicer to drive, but because they consume fewer resources to build and use, take less space on the street and are safer to pedestrians, and are less taxing on the environment and climate.
Basically, he owns most weird models and unknown models.
