[Music] foreign this is one of the coolest pieces of editing Hardware I've ever gotten [Music] and I got it because I'm switching to DaVinci Resolve let me tell you why I think you probably should too this thing is so sick it's like professional color grading tools so you can color grade fast and more professionally I've always wanted one of these but I just didn't color grade enough or work in DaVinci enough to justify it but now we're going full on in and let me give you a little bit of a history of my editing program so the very first program that I ever edited on was Final Cut Pro 7 I think it was back in the day where it was more like Premiere um I'm pretty sure I had a pirated copy of that sorry and then it seemed like Adobe was doing really big things and I was learning After Effects so I switched to Premiere and it was really great I love Premiere it it basically just kicked off my whole film making career but over the years I have dealt with so many different bugs and issues and things inside of Premiere that just feel like they never ever ever get fixed and it just wasn't fast either and then when the M1 Max the M1 Apple chip started to come out I was like oh okay Premiere Adobe doesn't have a very good track record of like making things happen and updating things and so they're probably gonna be the slowest to kind of adapt to these new chips and to get everything out of them and that's when I switched over to Final Cut Pro which is very different from Final Cut 7 back in the day uh I tried Final Cut Pro a little bit at one point but it just didn't feel right to me I didn't like the magnetic timeline thing and it felt like I couldn't do all the pro things I wanted to but then over the years uh it started developing a lot and it got a lot better gotta turn off the air conditioning for your guy's sound might as well turn these on too right [Music] wait for the fan okay this is taking too long I'm just gonna keep going sorry for the noise so Final Cut Pro was actually really great it's super fast really just like no bugs or no ish perfect fans off no issues or bugs that you have to deal with on a constant basis I like never like very rarely would it even crash on me and if it did I just opened it back up and everything was fine but then when we start to get to more complex edits or kind of bigger projects it just it falls a little bit flat for me I just don't like how messy and crazy the magnetic timeline gets once you start getting into bigger projects and then the biggest thing for me is just the color grading tools aren't that great they're okay they're usable they're just not that great so why now am I torturing myself with another switch another having to learn a completely new program for me it's basically new because I haven't used it in so long it's changed so much well it's because I'm thinking of the long term and right now from what I see Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve they are looking into the future and they are making their program better and better every single year and if I'm gonna switch to something I need to see a really nice long-term future with it because it is a huge investment of time and in a way money because it's taking up so much time to learn a new program it really has to pay off in dividends over the years to come so here's kind of my reasons for why I'm switching to DaVinci Resolve now number one I just use whatever tool works best for me and for a while Premiere worked pretty great and then it wasn't that great and I actually stopped my subscription completely I only have like the photo editing apps Lightroom and Photoshop and all that stuff from Adobe and then Final Cut worked pretty well and now we're moving into this new phase of doing kind of like higher quality work and that's where a final cut I feel like doesn't do that well and so we're moving on to DaVinci which didn't used to be that great it was just a color grading editing program and then they kind of started introducing other stuff and now it's a full on editing Powerhouse you can do Motion Graphics sound effects and sound design and have by far the best color grading tools there are out there right now Final Cut Pro I don't really see changing too much it's not Apple's priority it's not their like main thing and so it's gonna just slowly progress and Premiere I I don't know what they're doing and I say that knowing that it probably means I'm not gonna be able to do like brand deals with Adobe because I'm saying these things but it's the truth I don't I don't understand how it feels like it's getting worse with time more features but just worse number two from what I've seen resolve is fairly fast and bug free and that's one of those things that you might have all of the best features ever but if there's bugs and it's slow then it just sucks to edit with any any like little hiccup as you're editing like even when you press the space bar to watch your footage if there's even a slight delay there it just triggers something in my brain and slows me down and just makes it not as fun and therefore my edits aren't going to turn out as good Final Cut Pro was great for that no bugs super fast like really really fast it's just a little bit too basic for mining but for your needs it might actually be the perfect program which leads me to number three which is Pro Tools and that's what I feel like Final Cut Pro is missing is those Pro Tools it has the really fast reliable good editing and stuff like that but missing some of like the pro features when you get into bigger projects it just feels a little clunky to me and probably the biggest thing for me is uh the color grading features now that I bought an area Alexa mini LF um yeah I feel like I need to really pay attention to color grading whereas a lot of the videos on my channel um it's more about telling the story and getting it out there versus making the colors perfect I don't like I color graded but I don't I don't spend hours and hours grading any of these kind of normal videos I'm sorry but I'm also not sorry at all moving into this next phase of making higher quality production things projects uh short films feature films I'm probably not going to be editing the feature films but even just the doc series that I want to produce the being series we're bringing it back we're gonna make that like Netflix quality hold me to that I definitely want to work with other professionals but I also want to know what I'm doing myself I'm constantly trying to learn and innovate myself and not fall behind uh which I feel like I I probably have been falling behind a little bit over the last couple years just because I've been pushing so hard on YouTube and teaching and and giving you guys uh this content that uh yeah of course you know me learning and progressing is gonna be a little bit less than when I was freelancing and that's all I was focusing on was just becoming the best DP and that's kind of what I want to get back to I haven't felt this excited about filmmaking in so long and I'm just like eating up all of the the cool videos out there nowadays with cinematographers and all these podcasts and all of this stuff and just learning a ton I'm slightly scared by all of this learning uh the hardware the programs all that I know it's gonna slow me down I have a really really fast workflow for YouTube which Final Cut would have been great but if I'm Gonna Learn DaVinci I'm gonna go all in on DaVinci Resolve that doesn't mean I'm not dreading it just a little bit just just in the end uh I don't know if this is bad to say but I feel like I have zero loyalty to products or things I'm not gonna just stick with Premiere or Final Cut because I'm a fanboy of that like I'm gonna use the tool that works best for me and right now I feel like resolve is the best tool for me if somebody else makes a better tool I'll switch in a heart well probably not a heartbeat because it takes so much time and effort to learn but I will make the switch so uh yeah if anybody wants to make a better tool that's great but right now I very much like what DaVinci Resolve is doing and I think that's why so many people are switching over right now and I think that's why a lot of you guys should also be switching if a lot of the pros are switching there's probably a good reason and it's not just because they're getting paid or something like that some of them might be but I'm not getting paid for any of this stuff so for now I have to learn how to use this sucker and uh I'll let you guys know how it goes and I'll kind of uh teach what I'm learning about resolve as we figure this thing out all right I'm gonna be heading out to NAB soon so I will see you guys later bye
